Lick #7: Return Of The Bend (Guitar Lesson LK-007) How to play

  • 0:05 - 0:09
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    Hey, how you doing?
    Justin here.
  • 0:11 - 0:13
In this little country special today,
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    we're checking out
    the Return Of The Bend,
  • 0:15 - 0:16
which is a very cool little lick
  • 0:16 - 0:19
which uses a bent note that
returns back to its normal note,
  • 0:19 - 0:21
and then bends back up again,
  • 0:21 - 0:24
and then we've got a little
cascade at the end of the lick.
  • 0:24 - 0:26
So let's get to a close up
and check out how to play it.
  • 0:26 - 0:30
So, we're starting here with the 3rd
finger in the 8th fret of the 2nd string,
  • 0:30 - 0:33
    and we're gonna bend that
    note up one tone.
  • 0:33 - 0:37
  • 0:37 - 0:40
    And that little finger is
    gonna sneak underneath,
  • 0:40 - 0:42
it's in the 8th fret, while
    the note is still bent.
  • 0:43 - 0:46
And it's gonna play that note,
    which is the note C.
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    Then you're gonna pick
    the bent note again
  • 0:48 - 0:50
release it, and push it back up again.
  • 0:50 - 0:51
    Just one pick,
  • 0:51 - 0:55
so pick at the top, release,
    push it back up
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    and then first finger's gonna
    get off the string and...
  • 0:58 - 1:01
play this note B flat, which is
the 6th fret of the thinner string.
  • 1:01 - 1:03
    Then you're gonna play the
    bent note again...
  • 1:04 - 1:05
    and bend it down.
  • 1:05 - 1:06
    So bend up.
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    So, pick at first actually
    while it's down.
  • 1:10 - 1:11
    Bend.
  • 1:11 - 1:14
    Pick the thinner string
    with the little finger.
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    Pick the bent note again.
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    Release, push it back up.
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    First finger sneaks up
    on the 8th fret.
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    Pick the bent note again,
  • 1:24 - 1:25
    and release it.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
  • 1:35 - 1:37
Hard part really is getting it
    in tune all the time,
  • 1:37 - 1:40
getting that bend to stay in tune.
That's the bit I struggle with.
  • 1:40 - 1:41
    Um, so after that,
  • 1:41 - 1:44
    after we've played that
release the bend to the note G,
  • 1:44 - 1:47
which is 8th fret of the second string,
  • 1:47 - 1:51
we're gonna play the note F,
which is the 6th fret of the 2nd string.
  • 1:51 - 1:54
    Then the open E string,
    the thinner string.
  • 1:55 - 1:59
    So we've got F-E, and
    now we move to D,
  • 2:00 - 2:00
    and C.
  • 2:01 - 2:02
    And if we can,
  • 2:02 - 2:05
we try and let as many of those
notes ring together as we can.
  • 2:05 - 2:07
  • 2:10 - 2:13
And you get that kind of
    nice cascading effect.
  • 2:13 - 2:16
  • 2:16 - 2:17
    It kind of sounds funky...
  • 2:17 - 2:18
  • 2:18 - 2:19
    over our C chord.
  • 2:19 - 2:23
So this will generally be played
over a C or a C7 chord, this kind of lick.
  • 2:23 - 2:26
  • 2:27 - 2:32
And here's little example of me trying
to fit it in over a C chord or a C7 chord
  • 2:32 - 2:34
with a kind of a country feel.
  • 2:35 - 2:39
  • 3:01 - 3:04
I hope you enjoyed playing about
with the Return Of The Bend lick.
  • 3:04 - 3:07
It's kind of an interesting little one,
    kind of difficult to use.
  • 3:07 - 3:11
    I still struggle with it,
getting all the bends really in time,
  • 3:11 - 3:13
and trying to find good ways of using it.
  • 3:13 - 3:16
It is kind of fun and I figured that
you guys would enjoy the struggle too.
  • 3:16 - 3:20
So, uh, I hope you do and I'll see for
    another lick sometime very soon.
  • 3:20 - 3:22
    Take care of yourselves,
    bye-bye.
