The Art of Changing Minds | Pascal Depuhl | TEDxBocaRaton

  • 0:09 - 0:13
I can change your mind in 15 minutes.
  • 0:13 - 0:16
However, I only have 5 with this TEDTalk,
  • 0:16 - 0:18
so it's going to be a little difficult
    to do that here.
  • 0:19 - 0:22
I want to tell you about a time
    when I took a 100 minds
  • 0:22 - 0:25
in a quarter of an hour
    and changed them.
  • 0:26 - 0:29
Take a look at this wordle.
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    What country comes to mind?
  • 0:35 - 0:38
    These are the answers
    that we got from students
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    when we pulled them
    right before showing them
  • 0:40 - 0:44
    the short documentary we filmed.
  • 0:44 - 0:47
    If you thought Afghanistan,
I know you didn't see the words
  • 0:47 - 0:48
    but you're right.
  • 0:50 - 0:54
The two main words in that wordle
    are "Dangerous" and "Hostile."
  • 0:54 - 0:59
    Who said to you,
that those words describe that country?
  • 1:00 - 1:03
If you haven't been there and you
    haven't experienced it for yourself,
  • 1:03 - 1:08
    somebody else has already
made up your mind for you.
  • 1:09 - 1:14
My buddies have come to Miami to visit
and told me about the work they did.
  • 1:14 - 1:17
At one point, I had this little story
pop in my head that said,
  • 1:17 - 1:20
"Hey, you should go to Afghanistan,
and you should tell a story
  • 1:20 - 1:23
    about the humanitarian work
    that they do over there
  • 1:23 - 1:26
and how it effects the lives
    of the Afghan people."
  • 1:29 - 1:32
However, when they came to my house,
they just told me about it,
  • 1:32 - 1:35
and it never really impacted me
    and never really changed
  • 1:35 - 1:39
the way I felt about Afghanistan.
  • 1:39 - 1:41
My take away from that is that
  • 1:41 - 1:43
if you want to change someone else's mind
  • 1:43 - 1:47
    you have to have
    your own mind changed first.
  • 1:47 - 1:51
    And that requires vision.
  • 1:51 - 1:52
    Jonathan Swift said that
  • 1:52 - 1:58
"Vision is the art of seeing
    what is invisible to others."
  • 1:59 - 2:02
    And that was exactly what
that little voice was doing in my head.
  • 2:02 - 2:06
    It was starting to create
this little vision in my head.
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    Unfortunately, I spent the next
    month and a half trying
  • 2:09 - 2:12
to come up with every excuse in the book
  • 2:12 - 2:15
why I should not go to Afghanistan.
  • 2:15 - 2:19
Six months later, I find myself
    preparing to go to Kabul.
  • 2:21 - 2:25
In spite of all that preparation,
in spite of all that planning,
  • 2:25 - 2:28
I overlooked the most important thing.
  • 2:29 - 2:31
All I wanted to do was to tell a story.
    That's it!
  • 2:31 - 2:34
Just hand the film over and say,
  • 2:34 - 2:35
    "Here you go!"
  • 2:35 - 2:37
What I never thought about was
  • 2:37 - 2:41
    how that film was going
    to impact the lives
  • 2:41 - 2:44
and minds of the people that
    were going to watch it.
  • 2:46 - 2:51
    Now, vision is important,
but it's a far cry from crafting
  • 2:51 - 2:55
a story that will change anybody's mind.
  • 2:56 - 3:00
    Steve Jobs said that:
  • 3:00 - 3:06
"If you don't have passion, any rational
person is just going to give up."
  • 3:06 - 3:11
    That passion will do more
for you than fuel your vision.
  • 3:11 - 3:14
It will get you through the obstacles
that you are inevitably going to face.
  • 3:16 - 3:20
It's also going to silence the naysayers
that you're bound to run into.
  • 3:20 - 3:28
But most importantly, passion is going to
let you craft a story that's worth sharing
  • 3:29 - 3:35
My story starts half way around the world
    at 8,000ft elevation,
  • 3:36 - 3:42
kneeling in the middle of a snow-covered
    airstrip at 25 below 0,
  • 3:42 - 3:48
with a plane racing at me, going to
pass about 4 ft over my head.
  • 3:49 - 3:52
Now for some of you, that may sound
    like a nightmare,
  • 3:52 - 3:57
    but for me, hands down,
it's the best day at work ever.
  • 3:57 - 4:06
My favorite definition of an artist is:
    "Someone who refreshes your vision."
  • 4:06 - 4:10
Vision is great, and passion is essential.
  • 4:10 - 4:13
    But it takes more
    than just having an idea.
  • 4:13 - 4:18
You need some kind of force that
    translates that idea into action.
  • 4:19 - 4:25
Passion can do that to or for you
but you need to work on it .
  • 4:25 - 4:29
You need to get your idea out.
You need to get your idea to life.
  • 4:29 - 4:31
Gary Vaynerchuck tweeted the other day,
  • 4:31 - 4:34
    that said:
"All ideas are great and even good,
  • 4:34 - 4:39
    but you have actually execute
on them, for them to matter."
  • 4:41 - 4:45
The Afghans have a saying that says,
  • 4:45 - 4:47
    "Your aspirations are in heaven,
  • 4:48 - 4:52
but your brains are in your feet,"
  • 4:52 - 4:53
    In other words,
  • 4:53 - 4:58
"Take your head out of the clouds,
get off your butt and get going."
  • 5:01 - 5:04
    In order to change minds,
    you need a story that
  • 5:04 - 5:08
you breathe life into or aspire into,
  • 5:08 - 5:16
before it can change the minds of,
    or inspire your listeners.
  • 5:16 - 5:22
About a year later, we were back into
    an auditorium full of students
  • 5:22 - 5:26
    that have just finished
    watching "On Wings of Hope."
  • 5:26 - 5:27
And here's where I get surprised.
  • 5:28 - 5:31
    You've all heard stories
    that give you goosebumps,
  • 5:31 - 5:34
    or you've seen a movie
    that's made your cry.
  • 5:34 - 5:38
    But I have never had
    any kind of measurement
  • 5:38 - 5:42
    on how my art has
    changed anyone's mind.
  • 5:42 - 5:46
Remember the wordle that you're going
to see now for the first time?
  • 5:48 - 5:51
These are the answers that the kids had
    before they watched the movie,
  • 5:51 - 5:53
    before they saw the film.
  • 5:53 - 5:56
Now imagine, 50 minutes are over.
  • 5:56 - 5:59
They're done, and the movies is finished.
    We asked the same question.
  • 5:59 - 6:02
    What do you think about
    when you hear Afghanistan?
  • 6:03 - 6:06
And here's where I get surprised.
  • 6:08 - 6:13
    "Dangerous" and "Hostile" transform
    into "Poor" and "Difficult."
  • 6:14 - 6:18
    If you want to master
    the art of changing minds,
  • 6:18 - 6:21
    follow your vision.
  • 6:21 - 6:27
    It will transform
    the way you tell stories.
  • 6:27 - 6:30
    Fuel your passion.
  • 6:30 - 6:36
    It will refresh the way
    that you share reality.
  • 6:37 - 6:40
    And act on your ideas.
  • 6:40 - 6:45
    Aspire your stories to inspire.
  • 6:49 - 6:54
    A passionate story
    that's told from your heart
  • 6:54 - 6:58
can change a thousand minds forever.
  • 6:58 - 7:03
And that's the art of changing minds.
  • 7:05 - 7:08
    (Applause)

  • Hello June and Reiko,

Nice subtitles. I have fixed the title with the latest guideline and also worked on sync and some lines to comply with the 42:21 rule.

    Best Regards!

  • Hi Tulio,

Thank you for fixing the sync and speed.
I think when I change this much I should clear timing and start synchronizing from the beginning.

This was done before you taught me how to check the timing and number of character. I now can do at least 42/21 right. I actually was counting letters before!

    Thank you, again.
    Reiko

  • I can't imagine how much effort it is to count letters hahahaha, you're a brave soul!

    Best Regards
