Live your dream: a juggler's story | Gustavo Ollitta | TEDxCannes
-
0:22 - 0:26I didn't know that my life was going to
take such a different road -
0:26 - 0:28because of one pair of these.
-
0:29 - 0:31For those of you who don't know
what these are, -
0:32 - 0:35they are juggling props
created by Michael Moschen, -
0:35 - 0:40who even performed here
on TEDxTalk six years ago. -
0:40 - 0:44They were further developed by Dai Zaobab.
-
0:45 - 0:48He created a new shape and
he named it "Buugeng", -
0:49 - 0:52then it travelled the whole world
-
0:52 - 0:55and it arrived at my house in Brazil.
-
0:56 - 0:58This prop has completely changed my life.
-
0:58 - 1:03After one year with them,
when I was in front of the computer, -
1:03 - 1:07on the Internet, trying to find
something interesting to learn. -
1:08 - 1:12I'm a single son,
reared by a traditional family. -
1:12 - 1:16This kind of family where everyone
has wished for their only son -
1:16 - 1:18a profession, goals...
-
1:19 - 1:21I tried to show them something different.
-
1:21 - 1:26I have chosen from that moment
to follow my dream, -
1:26 - 1:29to make this become a career.
-
1:30 - 1:32After finishing high school,
-
1:32 - 1:35I stopped studying classical subjects
-
1:35 - 1:37like mathematics, physics,
-
1:37 - 1:42to get fully into the world
of manipulation and arts. -
1:42 - 1:46My days were from morning until night
-
1:46 - 1:49doing research and more research.
-
1:49 - 1:52with this and other props.
-
1:53 - 1:58After four years of being
completely out of the real world, -
1:58 - 2:01and being against the desire of my family,
-
2:01 - 2:05school, society, I became someone.
-
2:05 - 2:10I am now graduated from
a professional circus school in Italy. -
2:10 - 2:14I have a video that has reached
2 million views on Youtube. -
2:14 - 2:17created by Malabarize-se
-
2:17 - 2:21I have performed in more than 40 countries
-
2:21 - 2:23around Europe, the USA, Japan,
-
2:24 - 2:29including the TEDGlobal talk,
in South America. -
2:30 - 2:35All of that didn't happen
because of my technique. -
2:36 - 2:41But what was more important
was the desire to follow my dream. -
2:41 - 2:46Most people have fears about
following their passion as a career -
2:46 - 2:49and they get stuck
into something that they don't want, -
2:49 - 2:53wasting all the weeks of their life
doing what they don't like, -
2:53 - 2:58waiting for the break from their job
to be finally who they should be. -
2:58 - 3:02I think that if everyone
thought without fear -
3:02 - 3:04about following their passion,
-
3:04 - 3:07life would be more enjoyable.
-
3:07 - 3:11Even the hard times you have
to go through in any kind of career -
3:11 - 3:14would be easy because
you're doing what you love. -
3:15 - 3:20Like me, moving to Europe and
living in this camper for about one year -
3:20 - 3:22to save some money.
Look how happy I was! -
3:23 - 3:28Even if the oil was frozen and
I couldn't even make a salad, -
3:29 - 3:30it was OK.
-
3:31 - 3:35I've been sharing my passion
through many events -
3:35 - 3:41and even some locations where people
don't have the opportunity to dream, -
3:41 - 3:46like in my city, São Paolo,
in the favellas. -
3:47 - 3:52These children are constantly
in contact with problems of drugs, -
3:53 - 3:55violence in their home,
-
3:56 - 3:57and during this workshop,
-
3:57 - 4:00they could have the opportunity
to try something new, -
4:00 - 4:05and most important, to remember
and influence their own future, -
4:05 - 4:11to become who they want to be
and not what society wants from them. -
4:11 - 4:17Even in schools, as I love to mention
the TEDtalk by Ken Robinson, -
4:18 - 4:21who said how schools kill creativity.
-
4:21 - 4:28You start as a baby, learning to walk,
dance, use your body. -
4:28 - 4:31And little by little, because
of the society and your context, -
4:31 - 4:34you stop using all these movements
-
4:33 - 4:38to become someone who just needs
the right side of your brain to work. -
4:40 - 4:44I love to work with these in schools
and even some companies -
4:43 - 4:48because juggling is not just about
throwing three balls in the air -
4:48 - 4:53or manipulating two black and white
psychedelic scythes. -
4:54 - 5:01Here, you can see how many gains
and developments you can learn -
5:01 - 5:03while you're juggling.
-
5:03 - 5:08Intellectual, mental, physical
and psychological benefits -
5:08 - 5:11that you can gain while you're juggling.
-
5:12 - 5:17I'm not here to obligate anyone
to be a juggler. -
5:18 - 5:24I'm here to remind people
to dream and live your dream -
5:25 - 5:29because if you cannot dream,
you cannot wake up. -
5:30 - 5:31Thank you.
-
5:31 - 5:35(Applause)
-
5:40 - 5:43Now, I'm going to share with you
-
5:43 - 5:44my dream.
-
6:04 - 6:07(music)
-
10:28 - 10:32(Applause)

- Live your dream: a juggler's story | Gustavo Ollitta | TEDxCannes
- Description:
-
Gustavo Ollitta discovered juggling, by seeing a TED talk of Michael Moschen : since then, his passion did not leave him any more! He tells us about his experience and the numerous benefits of juggling. More than anything, he invites us to find a job which allows all of us to follow our passions in life.
In 2007, Gustavo Ollitta gives direction to his life by starting juggling, working on different types of “manipulations”. By 2010, he’s a professional. He performs at a number of festivals in his native Brazil. He is graduated from the School for Temporary Circus in Turin (Scuola Di Cirko le Vertige), which has really kickstarted his international career.
