How To Tell People Why You're Vegan

  • 0:03 - 0:05
Different peole go Vegan for different reasons
  • 0:06 - 0:09
And there are hundreds of reasons for choosing to avoid animal products
  • 0:10 - 0:13
But the simplest, most universal reason's because it's the right thing to do
  • 0:14 - 0:17
It helps the animals, it helps the environment and it helps us
  • 0:18 - 0:20
Some people ask this question aggressively
  • 0:21 - 0:25
Because deep down they're scared of having to take responsibility for their actions
  • 0:25 - 0:29
So they try to indimidate and disempower you with bitterness and sarcasm
  • 0:29 - 0:32
It's common for Vegans to become defensive
  • 0:32 - 0:36
And mutter an incoherent response in the attemp to change the subject and avoid awkwardness
  • 0:36 - 0:39
But don't let others stop you from speaking the truth
  • 0:39 - 0:43
All you're saying is that you don't want to have animal abuse as part of your lifestyle
  • 0:43 - 0:45
in a society where that's still considered normal
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    It's their burden, not yours
  • 0:48 - 0:51
Be fearless and proud of the fact that you're doing the right thing
  • 0:54 - 0:56
Don't underestimate the person you're talking to
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    because anyone can change
  • 0:58 - 1:01
And just understand that most Vegans were in this positions too
  • 1:01 - 1:04
before someone explained to them that compassion is a better option
  • 1:04 - 1:07
”I mean I ate meat and dairy heavily over-
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    For over 20 years
  • 1:09 - 1:11
I used to make fun of vegetarians”
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    ”I started watching just videos-
  • 1:13 - 1:16
I started like peeking at stuff that I didn't really wanna watch
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    I would bring um-
  • 1:18 - 1:22
chicken sandwiches, how I might be eating 'em and my chickens would be at my feet
  • 1:22 - 1:24
And I would start getting this-
  • 1:24 - 1:25
    breakdown in my-
  • 1:26 - 1:28
in my awareness that I was eating
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    their cousing or their mother
  • 1:31 - 1:33
That was right before I went Vegan”
  • 1:36 - 1:38
Every Vegan should have a confident response to the question:
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    ”Why are you Vegan?”
  • 1:40 - 1:44
Because in many cases when someone asks, it'll be the first time they've heard about Veganism
  • 1:45 - 1:48
There's an immense pressure to find the right words that'll help them understand
  • 1:48 - 1:52
And there's no perfect answer that works for every person in every situation
  • 1:52 - 1:55
But here are some quotes and ideas that are worth learning:
  • 1:57 - 2:01
”We all say that we love animals and we're all against animal cruelty
  • 2:01 - 2:05
But we pay people to mutilate, torture and slaughter animals
  • 2:05 - 2:07
And it's not for any neccessity
  • 2:07 - 2:09
It's not because we need to for our health
  • 2:10 - 2:12
It's just because we like the way they taste”
  • 2:15 - 2:20
”I'm Vegan for the female cows who are artificially inseminated then have their babies taken away to their death
  • 2:20 - 2:24
I'm Vegan for the chickens who are debeaked then forced into small cages
  • 2:24 - 2:29
I'm Vegan for the cows who are beaten because they're too sick to walk themselves to their own slaughter
  • 2:29 - 2:32
I'm Vegan for the pigs who are slammed to pieces on the ground
  • 2:32 - 2:36
I'm Vegan for the male chicks who are tossed into a grinder alive
  • 2:36 - 2:39
I'm Vegan for the foxes who are skinned alive for fur
  • 2:39 - 2:43
I'm Vegan for the orcas who are stolen from their families and forced to entertain
  • 2:44 - 2:46
I'm Vegan for the bunnies who are tested on for makeup
  • 2:47 - 2:51
I'm Vegan for the elephants in chains at the circus who are beaten to perform
  • 2:51 - 2:53
    But most importantly
  • 2:53 - 2:56
I'm Vegan because I reject slavery, cruelty and murder”
  • 2:57 - 3:00
”We have the power to save over 1 100 gallons of water,
  • 3:01 - 3:02
    45 pounds of grain,
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    30 squarefeet of forested land,
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    20 pounds of Co2
  • 3:08 - 3:09
    and one animals life
  • 3:10 - 3:11
    Every single day”
  • 3:13 - 3:18
”A whole foods, plantbased diet can help prevent, treat and reverse 14 of our 15 leading causes of death
  • 3:18 - 3:20
    Including our top three killers”
  • 3:20 - 3:24
”If there was a way to be healthy while saving animals and helping protect the planet
  • 3:25 - 3:26
    why wouldn't you do it?
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    It's easy to be Vegan
  • 3:29 - 3:31
We don't need to eat animals
  • 3:31 - 3:34
We benefit in every conceivable way from not eating them
  • 3:35 - 3:39
And the good news is that being Vegan doesn't mean you have to give up taste or your favourite foods
  • 3:40 - 3:45
These days there exist amazing Vegan alternatives to every meat, every cheese and even eggs
  • 3:45 - 3:48
And there are hundreds of recipes dor all kinds of great Vegan meals”
  • 3:52 - 3:58
The more you talk to people, the more you can start to remember different kinds of responses that resonate with different kinds of people
  • 3:58 - 4:02
James Aspey's response was one of the most sincere, inspiring ways of expressing why we're Vegan
  • 4:03 - 4:07
If you're talking to someone with a strong sense of justice or someone who deeply loves animals,
  • 4:08 - 4:11
explaining how the industries work can be very effective and spark conversation
  • 4:14 - 4:15
For people who want to protect the planet,
  • 4:15 - 4:20
give them facts from Cowspiracy about how animals agriculture is the leading cause of environmental destructuon
  • 4:21 - 4:26
And for those who are health conscious, it's okay to tell the health benefits of eliminating unhealthy animal products
  • 4:27 - 4:31
It's easier for people to understand the ethics once they've changed their dietary habits
  • 4:31 - 4:34
Even if it is for somewhat selfish reasons
  • 4:34 - 4:38
And sometimes leading by example is the best way to get people interested in the lifestyle
  • 4:38 - 4:41
So showing them how easy it is and how tasty Vegan meals are,
  • 4:42 - 4:44
they're more likely to understand your points
  • 4:44 - 4:47
Never underestimate the power of stories
  • 4:47 - 4:51
Using anecdotes from your life to show why you chose to change can stay with people
  • 4:51 - 4:53
and help them relate their personal journies with yours
  • 4:54 - 4:56
Many Vegans were once militant meat eaters
  • 4:56 - 4:59
who mocked and ridiculed Vegans because they didn't understand
  • 5:00 - 5:05
Powerful stories give us hope that anyone can turn their life around and choose compassion
  • 5:05 - 5:07
”The reason I took a vow of silence
  • 5:08 - 5:12
was to raise awareness for the voiceless victims of this planet
  • 5:12 - 5:13
    The animals
  • 5:13 - 5:14
    The animals”
  • 5:14 - 5:18
It doesn't always matter what you say when people ask you why you're Vegan
  • 5:18 - 5:20
What matters is how you say it
  • 5:20 - 5:23
Don't let fear stop you from speaking up
  • 5:23 - 5:28
Use evey question as an opportunity to inspire compassion in those who are too scared to change
  • 5:28 - 5:31
And don't be indimitated by sarcasm and ignorance
  • 5:31 - 5:35
Speak with such passion and conviction that they can't help but listen to your voice
  • 5:35 - 5:36
    Don't back down
  • 5:37 - 5:41
Speak the truth like you'd want it to be told if you were queuing up to be slaughtered
  • 5:43 - 5:46
You might not always have the perfect words
  • 5:46 - 5:50
But if you choose to say nothing, you'll have missed the opportunity to change someone's life
  • 5:51 - 5:54
And you'll have missed the opportunity to speak up against injustice
  • 6:14 - 6:16
”We all say we love animals
  • 6:16 - 6:17
    and-
  • 6:18 - 6:20
we all are against animal cruelty
  • 6:21 - 6:26
But we pay people to mutilate, torture and slaughter animals”
  • 6:26 - 6:27
    ”Killing is never humane,
  • 6:27 - 6:29
it's never gentle, it's never kind”
  • 6:30 - 6:31
”And it's not for any neccessity
  • 6:32 - 6:34
It's not because we need to for our health
  • 6:34 - 6:37
It's just because we like the way they taste”
  • 6:37 - 6:40
”Now I wanna let y'all know that I was not raised Vegan
  • 6:41 - 6:44
I ate meat, cheese, milk and eggs for around 25 years”
  • 6:44 - 6:46
    ”I remember saying to vegetarians
  • 6:47 - 6:47
    Um-
  • 6:47 - 6:50
For any animal you don't eat, I eat three, will you eat one?”
  • 6:50 - 6:52
    ”Needless to say
  • 6:52 - 6:54
    I understand your lifestyle
  • 6:54 - 6:55
    It used to be mine
  • 6:56 - 6:58
We all have different likes and dislikes
  • 6:59 - 7:01
    Different nationalities and religions too
  • 7:01 - 7:04
But there's one thing that we need to have in common with each other
  • 7:04 - 7:06
    and that's peace
  • 7:06 - 7:11
Genuine compassion and genuine peace for our planetary companions”
  • 7:11 - 7:13
”There's no valid argument for a westerner
  • 7:13 - 7:17
in the world we live with an abundance of fruit and vegetables in every street corner
  • 7:17 - 7:21
to ever pay someone to kill an animal in our behalf that we wouldn't wanna kill in the first place
  • 7:21 - 7:22
    when we don't need to”
Title:
How To Tell People Why You're Vegan
Description:

We all have slightly different reasons for choosing to avoid animal products, but the most universal one is because it's the right thing to do. When talking to open minded people, don't be afraid to give them the shocking facts. But with others, leading by example can be more effective. Regardless of this, be confident and speak on behalf of the voiceless animals.
