How to feel at home in the airport | Thomas Girard | TEDxEmilyCarrU

  • 0:08 - 0:10
For as long as I can remember,
  • 0:10 - 0:13
    I've wanted to travel
    all around the world.
  • 0:13 - 0:15
But it turns out my favorite places to be
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    are the airports.
  • 0:18 - 0:19
    I realized this was true
  • 0:19 - 0:22
    when I found myself
    boarding a plane to Seattle
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    just to visit their airport.
  • 0:24 - 0:25
    (Laughter)
  • 0:26 - 0:30
We often think of the world
as a vast place with many unknowns
  • 0:30 - 0:32
and things to learn about culture,
  • 0:32 - 0:35
but sometimes we forget the things
    that can be the same
  • 0:35 - 0:37
wherever they are in the world.
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    Let me illustrate.
  • 0:40 - 0:42
Recently, I was on a plane to India,
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    and I was dreaming
  • 0:44 - 0:46
    about India things.
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    Greyish orange skies.
  • 0:48 - 0:50
    The subtropical climate.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    Haggling over rupees
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    with an auto rickshaw driver
  • 0:54 - 0:55
    in Mumbai.
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    But something happened
    when I arrived in India.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    I didn't haggle over rupees.
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    I took a taxi.
  • 1:03 - 1:06
    Another time, I was
    on my way to Barcelona,
  • 1:06 - 1:08
and I was dreaming about Barcelona things.
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    Immersed in Gaudi architecture.
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    Eating pan con tomate.
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    Sipping a tempranillo.
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    Something happened there too.
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    I didn't sip a tempranillo.
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    I ordered a Diet Coke.
  • 1:22 - 1:23
    (Laughter)
  • 1:23 - 1:26
And a second Diet Coke to save for later.
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    Something happens when
we're in unfamiliar situations like these.
  • 1:30 - 1:32
We seek things that are familiar.
  • 1:32 - 1:36
    We actually crave things
    that are familiar.
  • 1:37 - 1:40
Next time you're on a plane,
think about some of these things.
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    Think about the Diet Coke.
  • 1:42 - 1:43
    The tomato juice.
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    Christmas.
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    Two-ply toilet paper.
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    Seat belts.
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    Even think about Hollywood movies.
  • 1:51 - 1:54
And think about how these things
    might remind you of home.
  • 1:55 - 1:57
Maybe you'll find yourself on a plane too.
  • 1:57 - 1:59
    Just to visit an airport.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    Thank you.
  • 2:01 - 2:02
    (Applause)
