-
1:11 - 1:12"I can't go to jail...
-
1:12 - 1:13I'll die in there!"
-
1:13 - 1:15Well… for several years now,
-
1:15 - 1:17anarchists and other trouble-makers
-
1:17 - 1:19have been combining their love for one,
-
1:19 - 1:21with their hatred of the other,
-
1:21 - 1:23ringing in the new year
-
1:23 - 1:25by showing solidarity with those forced
-
1:25 - 1:27to spend the holiday locked up behind bars.
-
1:27 - 1:30And New Years Eve 2015, was no exception,
-
1:30 - 1:31with noise demos
-
1:31 - 1:33and impromptu firework displays
-
1:33 - 1:34taking place outside jails
-
1:34 - 1:36and penitentiaries
-
1:36 - 1:37in dozens of cities around the world.
-
1:37 - 1:39This year, many of those
-
1:39 - 1:40New Year celebrations were carried out
-
1:40 - 1:43under the insurrectionary banner of
-
1:43 - 1:44BLACK DECEMBER
-
1:44 - 1:47as peeps answered a call made in November
-
1:47 - 1:49by imprisoned Greek anarchists Nikos Romanos
-
1:49 - 1:51and Panagiotis Argirou,
-
1:51 - 1:52urging comrades around the world
-
1:52 - 1:54to step up their game by increasing
-
1:54 - 1:56the anarchist offensive against
-
1:56 - 1:57the world of Power.
-
1:57 - 1:59By the time the smoke had cleared on 2015
-
1:59 - 2:02over 100 separate solidarity actions,
-
2:02 - 2:03demonstrations, events,
-
2:03 - 2:05and clandestine attacks
-
2:05 - 2:06had been carried out
-
2:06 - 2:07in 20 different countries,
-
2:07 - 2:10all under the banner of Black December.
-
2:10 - 2:13Several got in just under the wire
-
2:13 - 2:14on December 31st,
-
2:14 - 2:16including a sledgehammer attack
-
2:16 - 2:18on a weapon manufacturer,
-
2:18 - 2:21BAE Systems, in Melbourne, Australia;
-
2:21 - 2:23a Molotov attack on a Porsche dealership
-
2:23 - 2:25in Montevideo, Uruguay;
-
2:25 - 2:28and two separate attacks in Germany:
-
2:28 - 2:29the torching of several Federal
-
2:29 - 2:32Customs Administration vehicles in Leipzig
-
2:32 - 2:33and a series of coordinated arson
-
2:33 - 2:35and sabotage attacks
-
2:35 - 2:37carried out against the sprawling,
-
2:37 - 2:38CO2-belching,
-
2:38 - 2:40open-pit brown coal mine
-
2:40 - 2:41in the Hambach Forest.
-
2:43 - 2:45Meanwhile, the past month has seen
-
2:45 - 2:47an intense escalation of repression in
-
2:47 - 2:50Kurdish regions of southeastern Turkey.
-
2:50 - 2:51including the imposition of
-
2:51 - 2:52round-the-clock curfews
-
2:52 - 2:54in Kurdish districts in the cities of
-
2:54 - 2:58Cizre, Silopi, Nusaybin and Diyarbakir
-
2:58 - 3:00and a full-fledged onslaught
-
3:00 - 3:02by the Turkish fucking military.
-
3:02 - 3:04"We have left our neighbourhood
-
3:04 - 3:05and we are leaving town.
-
3:05 - 3:06They are shelling us with mortars
-
3:06 - 3:08and attacking with tanks,
-
3:08 - 3:09so we are going to another region."
-
3:09 - 3:11As those who watched my previous report
-
3:11 - 3:13on the Kurdish insurrection in Turkey
-
3:13 - 3:15will know, back in August
-
3:15 - 3:18Turkey's aspiring Führer, Tayipp Erdogan,
-
3:18 - 3:21took a shit on the country's peace process
-
3:21 - 3:23and restarted a nearly 40 year-old
-
3:23 - 3:26civil war with the PKK,
-
3:26 - 3:28or Kurdistan Worker's Party.
-
3:28 - 3:30In response,
-
3:30 - 3:31community assemblies in the country's
-
3:31 - 3:33Kurdish southeast moved to declare
-
3:33 - 3:35autonomy from the Turkish state
-
3:35 - 3:37and began preparing to defend themselves,
-
3:37 - 3:38by digging trenches
-
3:38 - 3:40and building barricades.
-
3:40 - 3:41Since then, there have been
-
3:41 - 3:4351 curfews imposed in this region
-
3:43 - 3:45including the latest wave,
-
3:45 - 3:48which began on December 14th.
-
3:48 - 3:49After sealing off neighbourhoods
-
3:49 - 3:51with tanks and special forces,
-
3:51 - 3:53and imposing a media blackout,
-
3:53 - 3:54Turkish snipers have been shooting
-
3:54 - 3:57anyone who leaves their house on sight,
-
3:57 - 3:59while the army pummels the region
-
3:59 - 4:01with artillery, and patrols the streets
-
4:01 - 4:03in tanks flanked by helicopter gunships.
-
4:04 - 4:05"We can't raise our heads.
-
4:05 - 4:06There are tanks... artillery.
-
4:06 - 4:08Our children's mental health is damaged.
-
4:08 - 4:10There's nothing to wear. Nothing to eat.
-
4:10 - 4:12We want this to end. Enough!
-
4:12 - 4:14We have been at war since the 1990s."
-
4:14 - 4:16This latest upsurge in violence
-
4:16 - 4:18has already claimed the lives of hundreds,
-
4:18 - 4:20if not thousands of peeps,
-
4:20 - 4:22mostly Kurdish civilians.
-
4:26 - 4:28But despite this fucked up level
-
4:28 - 4:31of state repression, Kurds in Turkey
-
4:31 - 4:32have continued to resist,
-
4:32 - 4:34with the YDG-H,
-
4:34 - 4:36or Kurdish Patriotic Youth Movement
-
4:36 - 4:38attacking Turkish personnel carriers
-
4:38 - 4:40with Molotov cocktails
-
4:40 - 4:42and even engaging Turkish troops
-
4:42 - 4:43and police in firefights.
-
4:43 - 4:45Solidarity actions
-
4:45 - 4:46have also taken place across the region,
-
4:46 - 4:48with tens of thousands of Kurds
-
4:48 - 4:50from around the country
-
4:50 - 4:52traveling to the besieged city of Cizre
-
4:52 - 4:54to demand an end to the military crackdown
-
4:54 - 4:56and massive rallies taking place in
-
4:56 - 4:57parts of Kurdish cities
-
4:57 - 5:00not currently under strict curfew conditions.
-
5:00 - 5:01Most importantly,
-
5:01 - 5:03the Kurds have not backed down
-
5:03 - 5:05from their declaration of autonomy,
-
5:05 - 5:06which has since been adopted
-
5:06 - 5:08by the leaders of the reformist
-
5:08 - 5:10pro-Kurdish HDP party,
-
5:10 - 5:12and new community self-defense forces
-
5:12 - 5:13have been formed, modeled after the
-
5:13 - 5:16Syrian Kurdish defense forces of the YPG
-
5:16 - 5:18and YPJ.

6:38 - 6:40chunk of time showcasing stories from the

-
6:42 - 6:44From the Mapuche nation
-
6:44 - 6:45fighting against the ongoing theft

6:45 - 6:47of their lands by the Chilean state,

6:47 - 6:50to Palestinians resisting illegal settlements

-
6:52 - 6:54anti-colonial resistance is alive and well
-
6:54 - 6:56in today's so-called post-colonial world.
-
6:56 - 6:58In resisting the ongoing colonization
-
6:58 - 7:00of their traditional territories,
-
7:00 - 7:03Indigenous land defenders form a primary

7:03 - 7:05global line of defense against

7:05 - 7:06many of the destructive mega-projects
-
7:06 - 7:08proposed by the gangsta capitalists
-
7:08 - 7:11of the energy and extractive industries.
-
7:11 - 7:12Here in Klanada,
-
7:12 - 7:14Indigenous elders and warriors have been
-
7:14 - 7:16at the forefront of struggles against

7:16 - 7:17fracking, clear-cut logging,
-
7:17 - 7:19and the construction of

7:20 - 7:22and the motherfuckin Tar Sands.
-
7:22 - 7:23For much of the past decade
-
7:23 - 7:25this resistance has taken place under the

-
8:26 - 8:29loads of so-called “progressives”
-
8:29 - 8:29are swooning.
-
8:30 - 8:33In part, this is typical lesser-evilism
-
8:33 - 8:34similar to when

8:34 - 8:35the man your mama calls Obama
-
8:35 - 8:36took over from the

-
8:41 - 8:43of an electoral system
-
8:43 - 8:44managed by PR companies
-
8:44 - 8:47and mediated by corporate and state media.
-
8:47 - 8:50But another one of the insidious reasons
-
8:50 - 8:53why peeps have shown JT so much love
-
8:53 - 8:56lies in his professed plans to reboot
-
8:56 - 8:58the federal government’s relations
-
8:58 - 9:00with the country’s First Nations.
-
9:00 - 9:01This shift in tone was signaled, in part,
-
9:01 - 9:04by his nomination of the country's
-
9:04 - 9:06first Indigenous Attorney General,
-
9:06 - 9:07Jody Wilson-Raybould,
-
9:07 - 9:09a former regional chief
-
9:09 - 9:12of the BC Assembly of First Nations who
-
9:12 - 9:13before joining the federal government,
-
9:13 - 9:15oversaw several rounds of
-
9:15 - 9:17treaty negotiations
-
9:17 - 9:18that attempted to assimilate
-
9:18 - 9:20the unceded Indigenous territories
-
9:20 - 9:22of so-called British Columbia
-
9:22 - 9:23by bringing them under the legal
-
9:23 - 9:26jurisdiction of their colonial occupier.
-
9:26 - 9:28As the head honcho of the
-
9:28 - 9:29country's justice department,
-
9:29 - 9:31she is now in charge of dealing with
-
9:31 - 9:33troublesome Native groups who continue
-
9:33 - 9:35to maintain their territorial sovereignty,
-
9:35 - 9:37such as the Unist'ot'en clan
-
9:37 - 9:39blocking pipelines in unceded
-
9:39 - 9:40Wet'suwet'en lands.
-
9:40 - 9:42As western corporations
-
9:42 - 9:43and their political pets
-
9:43 - 9:45get increasingly wise to the threat posed
-
9:45 - 9:47by the current upsurge
-
9:47 - 9:48in Native-led resistance,
-
9:48 - 9:50attempts to co-opt their struggles
-
9:50 - 9:51will no doubt increase.
-
9:51 - 9:53But grassroots Indigenous activists
-
9:53 - 9:55and land defenders live lifestyles
-
9:55 - 9:57very different from the sellout leaders
-
9:57 - 9:59that the state handpicks
-
9:59 - 10:00as negotiating partners.
-
10:00 - 10:01These differences have incredibly
-
10:01 - 10:02high stakes.
-
10:03 - 10:05Particularly when it comes to negotiating

10:05 - 10:07treaties and signing infrastructural

10:07 - 10:08development projects.
-
10:08 - 10:10To learn more about some of the real life

-
10:12 - 10:14in Turtle Island, I recently caught up
-
10:14 - 10:16with Ant-Loc, MC for one of my favourite
-
10:16 - 10:18hip hop groups, Savage Fam.
-
10:18 - 10:20My name don't matter in this situation.
-
10:20 - 10:22We represent Savage Fam:

-
10:39 - 10:41To most peeps out there, Savage Fam
-
10:41 - 10:42is a hip hop group.
-
10:42 - 10:44But to others, it's much more than that.
-
10:44 - 10:45Can you explain?
-
10:45 - 10:47Some people consider us, you know,
-
10:47 - 10:49music or hip hop artists, or rap artists
-
10:49 - 10:51or whatever the fuck that is, but I feel
-
10:51 - 10:55like Savage Fam was a coming together
-
10:55 - 10:57of a lot of people that were tired of
-
10:57 - 11:00having to face the sicknesses, the death,
-
11:00 - 11:01the destruction that was going on on our
-
11:01 - 11:02communities. And I think that some of us
-
11:02 - 11:06grabbed on the portion of music, hip hop
-
11:06 - 11:07because it was something that was listened
-
11:07 - 11:09to in our communities. But realistically
-
11:09 - 11:12the way we always address it - I know when
-
11:12 - 11:13we are sitting behind closed doors, and
-
11:13 - 11:14we're conversing with ourselves,
-
11:14 - 11:16the fact is that Savage Fam is a voice..
-
11:16 - 11:18it's an idea, it's a concept.
-
11:18 - 11:19It's a way of being that existed
-
11:19 - 11:21even before we gave it a name.
-
11:21 - 11:23Like the way it's broken down:
-
11:23 - 11:24Standing Against Violent Adversaries
-
11:24 - 11:26and Genocidal Environments - what that
-
11:26 - 11:29suggests is that, not only do we function
-
11:29 - 11:31with addressing the issues in terms
-
11:31 - 11:35through music, we also confront the system
-
11:35 - 11:36- we have confronted the system,
-
11:36 - 11:38we have been arrested... got down doing
-
11:38 - 11:40what was necessary to hold it down for
-
11:40 - 11:41our people.
-
11:41 - 11:43We've crossed the country helping out
-
11:43 - 11:45our people in every way possible....
-
11:45 - 11:47not just through music. But music was the
-
11:47 - 11:48way that people got to know us, Savage Fam
-
11:48 - 11:50When I first saw y'all perform,
-
11:50 - 11:52y'all had more rappers on stage
-
11:52 - 11:53than the Wu Tang Clan.
-
11:53 - 11:55How many peeps are in Savage Fam?
-
11:55 - 11:56Many people, like, grabbed onto this shit
-
11:56 - 11:59and we never wanted to turn anyone away
-
11:59 - 12:01in terms of being a part of this shit.
-
12:01 - 12:04In terms of being like "Well I got nobody
-
12:04 - 12:06else. I have fuckin nothing remaining
-
12:06 - 12:08of my identity. I have nothing remaining
-
12:08 - 12:09of any of this shit, because this shit
-
12:09 - 12:12has been stripped from me by every
-
12:12 - 12:14possible means there is. And you're
-
12:14 - 12:15the only fucking thing we have...
-
12:15 - 12:18is this shit. I seen in this video
-
12:18 - 12:19where y'all were getting arrested
-
12:19 - 12:21at fuckin Columbus Day in Denver.
-
12:21 - 12:24I seen this shit when y'all came over
-
12:24 - 12:25to the spot and droppred some clothes off.
-
12:25 - 12:28Y'all came up to the spot when the girl
-
12:28 - 12:29killed herself just to come show support."
-
12:29 - 12:31People were like "Fuck that, we wanna
-
12:31 - 12:32be a part of this shit, you know what I'm
-
12:32 - 12:34sayin? Yeah man... fuckin this is all we
-
12:34 - 12:36have. You make us feel strong.
-
12:36 - 12:38You make us feel this, or you make us
-
12:38 - 12:40actually only fuckin feel like somebody
-
12:40 - 12:41gives a fuck about us."
-
12:41 - 12:43Like, that simple. Like "you actually
-
12:43 - 12:45fuckin care about some shit that
-
12:45 - 12:46we're going through, and we can tell you
-
12:46 - 12:47really been through it."
-
12:47 - 12:48So Savage Fam spans all the fuck over.
-
12:48 - 12:50You might find a motherfucker in
-
12:50 - 12:51Nova Scotia... you might find some
-
12:51 - 12:53motherfucker in South America.
-
12:53 - 12:55A lot of the lyrics y'all drop are about
-
12:55 - 12:56the motherfuckin police.
-
12:56 - 12:58Why do y'all hate them so much?
-
12:58 - 12:59And what is their role
-
12:59 - 13:01in the colonial process?
-
13:01 - 13:03Pigs and military, they hold in place
-
13:03 - 13:04an illegal occupying force.
-
13:04 - 13:07So like, the system of the United Snakes,
-
13:07 - 13:10the systems of anything else that exists
-
13:10 - 13:13here, is held in place by the policing
-
13:13 - 13:15system and by the military system,
-
13:15 - 13:17which in a sense, if you look at it, are
-
13:17 - 13:18very much one and the same.
-
13:18 - 13:21Because under the US view of the world
-
13:21 - 13:22might makes right, so the more power
-
13:22 - 13:23that you exert, the more power that
-
13:23 - 13:25you show in terms of policing the streets
-
13:25 - 13:27with guns.. the Feds, the pigs,
-
13:27 - 13:30what they do, is they continuously
-
13:30 - 13:35hold down - they make sure that this
-
13:35 - 13:37occupancy is continuing, and ongoing.
-
13:37 - 13:39And I think - that's like, from an
-
13:39 - 13:40Indigenous perspective.
-
13:40 - 13:41When you look at it from
-
13:41 - 13:42a human perspective, or any other
-
13:42 - 13:44perspective, you can see every single day
-
13:44 - 13:45people being killed by the police.
-
13:45 - 13:46You can see people being raped
-
13:46 - 13:48by the police. You can see how corrupt
-
13:48 - 13:52the system is. How misplaced the idea
-
13:52 - 13:54of justice is.
-
13:54 - 13:56Because what they have created is
-
13:56 - 13:59bullies with badges, bullies with guns.
-
13:59 - 14:01People that kind of, can get away
-
14:01 - 14:02pretty much with anything.
-
14:02 - 14:04Are there any groups or movements
-
14:04 - 14:05out there that you have affinity with?
-
14:05 - 14:08Any other movement outside of an anarchist
-
14:08 - 14:10movement has always been about "how do we
-
14:10 - 14:12find our place for justice
-
14:12 - 14:13within the system?
-
14:13 - 14:16How do we find our place to exist within
-
14:16 - 14:17the system, but equal?
-
14:17 - 14:20How do we find our place within the system
-
14:20 - 14:22but have our piece of the pie as well?"
-
14:22 - 14:24And under that, there's no addressing of
-
14:24 - 14:26the fact that people are - everyone is
-
14:26 - 14:28illegally occupying Indigenous homelands.
-
14:28 - 14:31And I think that is a fundamental flaw
-
14:31 - 14:33in every single movement that needs
-
14:33 - 14:34to be addressed, first and foremost
-
14:34 - 14:36before I even listen to anybody about
-
14:36 - 14:38anything. That's me personally...
-
14:38 - 14:40because I think that it's very dangerous
-
14:40 - 14:42to assume as anybody - and I don't care
-
14:42 - 14:45what P.O.C. organization you come from,
-
14:45 - 14:47whatever it is, if you're not addressing
-
14:47 - 14:48first and foremost, that you occupy
-
14:48 - 14:51Indigenous homelands illegally
-
14:51 - 14:53- regardless of the circumstances that
-
14:53 - 14:54got you there - if you do not address that
-
14:54 - 14:57fact, first and foremost,
-
14:57 - 15:00then you disrespect and you disregard
-
15:00 - 15:04the ongoing occupation, and the injustice
-
15:04 - 15:06that continues because of that ongoing
-
15:06 - 15:07occupation - that colonization process.
-
15:07 - 15:10Colonization is simply the process of
-
15:10 - 15:13coming through forcefully, and pushing
-
15:13 - 15:15a new worldview, and a new way
-
15:15 - 15:17of functioning on a group of people or
-
15:17 - 15:20group of peoples. And so if you're willing
-
15:20 - 15:22to accept that, just as long as you
-
15:22 - 15:23can have your piece of equality within
-
15:23 - 15:25that, then it's problematic for
-
15:25 - 15:26the Indigenous population.
-
15:26 - 15:29Do you think people on this continent are
-
15:29 - 15:30paying more attention to
-
15:30 - 15:31Indigenous issues?
-
15:31 - 15:34Yes... but that's only in the context of
-
15:34 - 15:36like it fits now with environmental issues
-
15:36 - 15:38where we're seeing drastic environmental
-
15:38 - 15:40changes. And because of that, we're
-
15:40 - 15:42afraid of what might happen.
-
15:42 - 15:44So... the Indigenous population has always
-
15:44 - 15:46been the people to go to to be like
-
15:46 - 15:47"Oh, what the fuck should we do,
-
15:47 - 15:48because our fuckin world is changing, and
-
15:48 - 15:50it's turning all bad?" because they know
-
15:50 - 15:51how to take care of the land and shit.
-
15:51 - 15:52And so everyone's like
-
15:52 - 15:53"Oh, let's figure out a way
-
15:53 - 15:55to see what these Natives are doing."
-
15:55 - 15:58But even then, it's underground.
-
15:58 - 16:00And it's very very much underground.
-
16:00 - 16:01So like, right now, we're talking about
-
16:01 - 16:03a fuckin coal train that's going through
-
16:03 - 16:05Lummy, and nobody fuckin knows that
-
16:05 - 16:07even exists because people are so busy
-
16:07 - 16:08dealin with like, one or two
-
16:08 - 16:11major projects that are fuckin set up
-
16:11 - 16:12by the media to be important. But there's
-
16:12 - 16:15a thousand different projects going on.
-
16:15 - 16:16There's thousands of different things
-
16:16 - 16:17that are going on. There's fucking farms
-
16:17 - 16:19on rivers... there's fuckin ongoing
-
16:19 - 16:21deforestation and logging.
-
16:21 - 16:23Until it affects them in their back yard..
-
16:23 - 16:24then it's like "Let's bring in the
-
16:24 - 16:26Natives, and let's have a picture of the
-
16:26 - 16:27Natives and what they're doing,
-
16:27 - 16:28and let's support them."
-
16:28 - 16:30Again, this is allyship at its finest,
-
16:30 - 16:31because this is when people like,
-
16:31 - 16:33bring Natives to the forefront, and have
-
16:33 - 16:34them be the voice. And they actually
-
16:34 - 16:37become the ones who are chased after
-
16:37 - 16:38and incarcerated, murdered, all those
-
16:38 - 16:41different things behind closed doors.
-
16:41 - 16:43And everybody else gets their accolades
-
16:43 - 16:44and shit. People wanna do the shit
-
16:44 - 16:45that gets them in front of cameras,
-
16:45 - 16:47gets them on pictures and shit like that.
-
16:47 - 16:48And I know we're sittin in front of
-
16:48 - 16:49cameras right now, but what I'm sayin is
-
16:49 - 16:51that people wanna do the pretty shit.
-
16:51 - 16:53People wanna do the fuckin - all the
-
16:53 - 16:56little shit that's the "major world" shit,
-
16:56 - 16:58so they can get a little fame and fortune
-
16:58 - 17:00behind what they're trying to do.
-
17:00 - 17:02But nobody really knows - people don't
-
17:02 - 17:05know about the fact that every fucking day
-
17:05 - 17:06there's kids killing themselves.
-
17:06 - 17:07People don't know the fact that, fuckin,
-
17:07 - 17:09there's kids overdosing themselves every
-
17:09 - 17:11fucking day - which doesn't mean shit to
-
17:11 - 17:12society at large. But when you have
-
17:12 - 17:14a population of 500 fuckin people,
-
17:14 - 17:17some places 30 people, some places 100
-
17:17 - 17:18people. When you have a population
-
17:18 - 17:20like that, and you see 10 people die
-
17:20 - 17:23a fuckin year? That's fucking significant.
-
17:23 - 17:25But nobody fuckin pays attention
-
17:25 - 17:26to that shit. Ain't nobody coming
-
17:26 - 17:28to fuckin any kind of camp to, say,
-
17:28 - 17:30stop the child molestors from coming
-
17:30 - 17:31in our community. But if we have some
-
17:31 - 17:33big shit that affects them, they'll come
-
17:33 - 17:34fuck with us. But they won't fuck with us
-
17:34 - 17:36if we're talkin about let's try and
-
17:36 - 17:38protect our children. Let's try to protect
-
17:38 - 17:41our women. Let's try - it's not - it won't
-
17:41 - 17:43go down like that. Because personally,
-
17:43 - 17:44I don't believe anyone really gives a fuck
-
17:44 - 17:46unless they got some kind of stake in it.
-
17:46 - 17:48But we always got a stake in it.
