0:00 - 0:04Hello. Today we're going to be discussing
the different views available in -
0:04 - 0:08"Computer," and how to change among the views, and how to sort in the different
-
0:08 - 0:13views. Now the view that we're in right
now is the small icon view. This view is -
0:13 - 0:17good if you have a lot of things in a
given folder that you'd like to be able -
0:17 - 0:22to see all at once and if you have very good eyesight and good hand-eye coordination.
-
0:22 - 0:28You might decide however you'd like to
see things a little bit larger. If you -
0:28 - 0:33right-click on a blank part of the
pane, you can choose "View" -
0:33 - 0:37and instead of choosing "Small icons," I
might choose medium or large or even -
0:37 - 0:44extra large icons. In all of these views
you see an icon representing the object -
0:44 - 0:49as well as the object's name. Once I get
into the large icon view, I can actually -
0:49 - 0:56see a thumbnail of one of the pictures
in here. There's another way you can -
0:56 - 1:00change among views, but you need to be
able to see your menu bar to do that. You -
1:00 - 1:04might not see your menu bar, and if it's
hidden you can display it by going to -
1:04 - 1:13Organize-->Layout, and click on "Menu Bar." From here, you have a menu option and you
-
1:13 - 1:19have the same views available here that
you had by right-clicking. You can go -
1:19 - 1:22through each of the views yourself and
see what's available. The one other view -
1:22 - 1:26that I'd really like to point out,
however, is the "Details" view. I really -
1:26 - 1:29like this view because it gives you not
just the information you had before in -
1:29 - 1:33those small and the large icons views,
but it gives you some additional -
1:33 - 1:39information as well: When was the file
last modified, what type of file it is, -
1:39 - 1:46what's its size, and if you right-click
on the field headings row, you could -
1:46 - 1:54choose to add even additional fields to
display. By default your files are -
1:54 - 1:59probably going to be organized
alphabetically a-z: first A through to Z -
1:59 - 2:06in the folders, and A to Z in the file
names. If you wish to change the order -
2:06 - 2:11when you're in the "Details" view, it's
really easy. Maybe I'd like to group all -
2:11 - 2:14of my bitmap images together. I'd like to
create a folder -
2:14 - 2:20and put all my bitmap images in. Well, I
can just click on the field heading for -
2:20 - 2:25"Type" and if I click on it once,
everything will be sorted in ascending -
2:25 - 2:31order by type -- folders first then files. If
I click on a type field heading again it -
2:31 - 2:37reverses the sort order so it's sorting
in descending order. I'm going to go back -
2:37 - 2:43to having things sorted alphabetically
by name. This method of sorting is only -
2:43 - 2:50available in the "Details" view. If I
switch to one of the other views -- maybe -
2:50 - 2:58the medium icons view -- I can still sort,
but to do so, I would right-click on a -
2:58 - 3:03blank part of the pan' and then choose
"Sort by," and select the field I'd like to -
3:03 - 3:09sort by -- again maybe "Date modified" -- maybe I'd like to have all the things that
-
3:09 - 3:14were modified fairly recently close
together so I can see that I remember that I -
3:14 - 3:19wanted to work with a Word document that I worked with just last week but I don't
-
3:19 - 3:24remember what the name of the document was. By sorting according to
-
3:24 - 3:29"Last modified," I'd be able to see fairly
quickly which document was modified in -
3:29 - 3:37the past week. The sort order and the
view that you use do not change the -
3:37 - 3:41contents of the folder; neither one
changes the contents of the folder. You -
3:41 - 3:48may use any sort order and any view that you find useful. Sometimes you might want to
-
3:48 - 3:52change back and forth between the views; that is entirely your choice. One of the
-
3:52 - 3:56advantage of modern operating
systems is that you do have the -
3:56 - 4:02customization. So go and choose whatever you'd like to do
