The Dream Of Life - Alan Watts - English Captions

  • 0:00 - 0:10
    [music plays]
  • 0:12 - 0:16
[Alan Watts:] If you awaken from this illusion
  • 0:17 - 0:20
and you understand that black implies white
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    self implies other
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    life implies death
  • 0:27 - 0:30
or shall I say death implies life
  • 0:34 - 0:38
    you can feel yourself.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
Not as a stranger in the world.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
Not as something here on probation.
  • 0:45 - 0:50
Not as something that has arrived here by fluke.
  • 0:50 - 0:53
But you can begin to feel your own existence
  • 0:53 - 0:56
    as absolutely fundamental.
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    [music plays]
  • 0:58 - 1:00
I'm not trying to sell you on this idea
  • 1:00 - 1:03
in the sense of converting you to it.
  • 1:03 - 1:05
I want you to play with it.
  • 1:05 - 1:06
I want you to think of its possiblities.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
I'm not trying to prove it
  • 1:08 - 1:13
I'm just putting it forward as a possibility of life to think about
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    So then...
  • 1:15 - 1:17
Let's suppose that you were able every night,
  • 1:17 - 1:20
to dream any dream you wanted to dream.
  • 1:22 - 1:26
And that you could for example have the power
  • 1:26 - 1:30
within one night to dream seventy five years of time.
  • 1:30 - 1:34
Or any length of time you wanted to have.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
And you would naturally, as you began on this adventure of dreams,
  • 1:37 - 1:41
you would fulfill all your wishes.
  • 1:43 - 1:47
You would have every kind of pleasure.
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    And after several nights
  • 1:51 - 1:54
of seventy five years of total pleasure each,
  • 1:54 - 1:56
you would say "Well that was pretty great!"
  • 1:56 - 1:59
    "But now let's - let's have a surprise".
  • 1:59 - 2:04
"Let's have a dream which isn't under control".
  • 2:04 - 2:06
"Where something is going to happen to me
  • 2:06 - 2:08
but I don't what it's going to be."
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    [music plays]
  • 2:11 - 2:13
    And you would dig that
  • 2:13 - 2:14
And come out of that you'd say
  • 2:14 - 2:18
"Wow that was a close shave wasn't it?"
  • 2:18 - 2:21
Then you would get more and more adventurous
  • 2:21 - 2:24
and you would make further and further gambles
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    to what you would dream.
  • 2:26 - 2:30
Finally you would dream where you are now.
  • 2:32 - 2:33
You would dream the dream of living the life
  • 2:33 - 2:36
that you are actually living today.
  • 2:37 - 2:40
That would be within the infinite multiplicity
  • 2:40 - 2:42
of choices that you would have.
  • 2:42 - 2:47
Of playing that you weren't God.
  • 2:47 - 2:51
Because the whole nature of the God in you
  • 2:51 - 2:54
according to this idea, is to play that he's not.
  • 2:54 - 2:58
So in this idea then, everybody is fundamentally
  • 2:58 - 3:04
the ultimate reality, not God in a politically kingly sense,
  • 3:04 - 3:08
but God in the sense of being the self.
  • 3:08 - 3:12
The deep down basics, whatever there is.
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    And you're all that.
  • 3:14 - 3:17
    Only your pretending your not.
  • 3:17 - 3:23
    [music plays]
