Heather Henderson Homeopathy Speech

  • 0:00 - 0:05
I'm Heather Henderson and I'm about to
    take a homeopathic sleep aid
  • 0:05 - 0:07
    called Calms-Forte.
  • 0:07 - 0:11
I'm doing a persuasive speech in my
class and I told the teacher
  • 0:11 - 0:15
that I wanted to start off my talk
by swallowing a whole bottle of these.
  • 0:15 - 0:19
He said, if I did it first in front
    of someone who I trusted,
  • 0:20 - 0:25
and showed him that everything was okay,
I'd be allowed to do it also in class.
  • 0:25 - 0:26
So I have a box here,
  • 0:28 - 0:32
and it's got a lot of bull ingredients,
    there's really nothing in them,
  • 0:32 - 0:34
I looked it all up, I did my research
  • 0:34 - 0:36
So I'm going to open it up here.
  • 0:36 - 0:37
    It's a little tiny bottle.
  • 0:38 - 0:39
    Let's take a look.
  • 0:40 - 0:42
Oh my gosh, that's a lot of pills.
    >> [Cameraperson]: Mhm.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
    >> Okay, it's a -- 50 tablets. [laughs]
  • 0:45 - 0:48
    Alright, fine.
[noise of tablets coming out of the bottle]
  • 0:48 - 0:49
    I'm going to take them.
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    >> Date?
    >> What is the date and time?
  • 0:53 - 0:57
    >> Okay - Hey Siri, what is today?
  • 1:02 - 1:06
    Alright, so it's Wednesday, May 31st, 2017.
  • 1:06 - 1:09
    >> Okay, I'm going to take it.
  • 1:11 - 1:13
I don't even have all of the pills
    in my hand right now,
  • 1:13 - 1:15
this is not even really half the bottle,
  • 1:15 - 1:17
but I'm gonna take as many as I can
    - these I can.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    Ready?
    > Okay.
  • 1:36 - 1:37
    Ah!
  • 1:41 - 1:42
    >> Show.
  • 1:48 - 1:49
    >> Ah!
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    Okay! [burps] Excuse me!
  • 1:55 - 1:57
That was 50 tablets of Calms-Forte..
  • 1:58 - 2:02
I'm about to head to class right now,
and I'm going to show him the video,
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    show him the empty bottle,
  • 2:04 - 2:06
show him the paper I wrote out,
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    explaining all the ingredients
    that aren't in this
  • 2:09 - 2:13
and -my class is four hours long,
so hopefully by the end of class,
  • 2:13 - 2:16
    he'll see that there's
nothing in this - at all.
  • 2:16 - 2:21
    >> [C] And right now the time is...
    Apple watch, come on!
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    >>[Apple watch:] It's 5:24
    >> [C:] It's 5:24
  • 2:25 - 2:26
    >> [AW] good evening
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    Wednesday May 31st 2017
  • 2:30 - 2:31
    >> Okay, here I go.
  • 2:32 - 2:36
Before I begin my speech, I need to take
  • 2:36 - 2:39
    a little bit of medication,
just to give me some pep.
  • 2:40 - 2:44
It's going to get me prepared,
so that I can do a great job.
  • 3:09 - 3:10
    Thanks for that.
  • 3:29 - 3:32
Imagine you have a friend, who is a parent
  • 3:32 - 3:37
of an adorable 18 month old baby
who gets a simple ear infection.
  • 3:38 - 3:40
    Let's call her Hope.
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    What would most parents do
    in this situation?
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    Many would take their baby
    to a pediatrician
  • 3:46 - 3:50
    who would prescribe antibiotics
that would clear up her ear infection.
  • 3:51 - 3:55
But what if you knew that
rather than taking Hope to a doctor,
  • 3:55 - 3:59
    Your friend was treating her
    with something called homeopathy?
  • 4:00 - 4:04
An ear infection can be dangerous,
especially for someone as young as Hope.
  • 4:05 - 4:08
Side effects can be very painful,
    and even lead to death.
  • 4:11 - 4:13
In 2015, Hope's parents were charged
  • 4:13 - 4:16
    with one count each
    of involuntary manslaughter
  • 4:16 - 4:19
and endangering the welfare of a child.
  • 4:20 - 4:22
    These parents were against antibiotics
  • 4:22 - 4:24
    and other chemicals
    related to Western medicine.
  • 4:25 - 4:28
So they treated Hope's ear infection
    with homeopathic remedies.
  • 4:30 - 4:33
Little Hope died of a condition
    that could have been prevented
  • 4:33 - 4:37
    with scientifically proven medicine
    in the form of amoxicillin.
  • 4:38 - 4:41
Hope was sick for three weeks
    before her death
  • 4:41 - 4:45
    and she suffered horribly
    and unnecessarily
  • 4:45 - 4:48
    from a simple ear infection
    that lead to meningitis,
  • 4:48 - 4:51
    which caused an abscess
followed by swelling of the brain.
  • 4:52 - 4:54
    What's even more horrific
  • 4:55 - 4:59
is because Hope was being treated
    with only homeopathic remedies,
  • 4:59 - 5:05
her illness and death went on
without any treatment to ease her pain.
  • 5:06 - 5:11
At one point, Hope was vomiting
and had a fever that reached 103°.
  • 5:12 - 5:16
And five days before her death,
Hope started draining fluid from her ear
  • 5:16 - 5:20
caused by an abscess that ruptured
    through her ear drum.
  • 5:22 - 5:26
This is only one anecdotal story
but there are many more like it,
  • 5:26 - 5:31
which is why I'm here to demonstrate
    that homeopathy is a lie.
  • 5:33 - 5:36
    I've done extensive research
    on homeopathic remedies
  • 5:36 - 5:39
because when I was diagnosed with cancer
    in 2001,
  • 5:39 - 5:42
I was desperate to find alternative ways
    to cure my illness.
  • 6:00 - 6:03
Fortunately, I also chose to listen
    to my doctor's advice
  • 6:04 - 6:05
    and go through with chemo.
  • 6:05 - 6:08
But I was so emotionally vulnerable.
  • 6:09 - 6:11
    I tried many expensive products
  • 6:11 - 6:14
that in the end did nothing
but cure my wallet of cash.
  • 6:16 - 6:18
    What exactly is homeopathy?
  • 6:18 - 6:23
Most people, when they hear the term,
think it is just natural herbal remedies.
  • 6:24 - 6:25
    Not even close.
  • 6:27 - 6:30
    To truly appreciate
    how awful this idea is,
  • 6:30 - 6:34
we need to go all the way back
    to the 18th century.
  • 6:34 - 6:37
    A German physician named
    Samuel Hahnemann
  • 6:38 - 6:43
    began forming the basic principles
of homeopathy in the late 1700's.
  • 6:43 - 6:47
    He developed what he called
    "the law of similars."
  • 6:47 - 6:50
That's the idea that diseases can be cured
  • 6:50 - 6:53
    by extremely small amounts of
    the substance that produces
  • 6:53 - 6:58
    similar symptoms in healthy people
    when they take large amounts.
  • 6:59 - 7:03
    Hahnemann and his earlier followers
    conducted "provings"
  • 7:03 - 7:07
    in which they administered herbs,
    mineral and other substances
  • 7:07 - 7:09
    to healthy people, including themselves,
  • 7:09 - 7:12
    and kept detailed records
    of what they observed.
  • 7:13 - 7:18
    Later, these records were compiled
    into a lengthy reference book
  • 7:18 - 7:20
    called Materia Medica,
  • 7:20 - 7:24
which are used to match a patient's
    symptoms with a corresponding drug
  • 7:24 - 7:27
    And for the record:
just because that book is in Latin
  • 7:27 - 7:29
    does not make it true.
  • 7:30 - 7:34
For example, if you had symptoms
of swelling from a spider bite,
  • 7:35 - 7:38
then a homeopath would give you
    a diluted amount of remedy
  • 7:38 - 7:40
with the venom of a spider in it
  • 7:40 - 7:41
    to cure the swelling,
  • 7:41 - 7:45
    because according to Hahnemann,
    like cures like.
  • 7:46 - 7:47
    Sounds crazy?
  • 7:47 - 7:50
That's because it is; here's why.
  • 7:51 - 7:53
    Consider just how diluted
    each one of these are.
  • 7:54 - 7:56
    Here's how it works.
  • 7:57 - 7:59
10 to the power of 1 is 10.
  • 8:00 - 8:02
    10 square is 100.
  • 8:02 - 8:05
    10 to the third power
    has 3 zeros behind it
  • 8:05 - 8:07
and it goes on and on and on.
  • 8:08 - 8:10
    To make a homeopathic remedy,
  • 8:10 - 8:15
you take 1 part of the active ingredient
and put it in 10 parts of water.
  • 8:21 - 8:23
    Then you succuss it.
  • 8:24 - 8:28
    Succuss means shaking, and homeopaths
    do the succussing like this.
  • 8:28 - 8:31
    They tap on something
as they are shaking the mixture.
  • 8:34 - 8:37
Now this is called a 1 solution.
  • 8:37 - 8:39
    That's far too strong.
  • 8:39 - 8:44
Then they take 1 part of that solution
and put it into 10 parts of water,
  • 8:44 - 8:47
    shake it again
    and make a 2 solution:
  • 8:47 - 8:49
    1 part in 100.
  • 8:50 - 8:55
The rule is, the more dilute the remedy is
    the stronger it is.
  • 8:56 - 8:58
    A popular dosage is 30 c.
  • 8:58 - 9:03
In homeopath speak, that's 1 part for
    million, million, million, million,
  • 9:03 - 9:07
    million,million, million, million,
    million, million.
  • 9:07 - 9:09
Let me put that into perspective.
  • 9:09 - 9:12
    Homeopathic remedies contain
    far less medicine
  • 9:12 - 9:16
than if you were to put
    one drop of active ingredient
  • 9:16 - 9:18
in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
  • 9:19 - 9:22
If you dilute a solution that much,
  • 9:22 - 9:24
    how does it even work?
  • 9:25 - 9:28
    Here's what homeopathic doctors believe.
  • 9:29 - 9:31
They believe that water retains memory.
  • 9:32 - 9:35
That is to say, they believe water
    remembers the effects
  • 9:35 - 9:37
    of the active ingredient.
  • 9:37 - 9:41
What they don't realize is that
    if water retains memory,
  • 9:41 - 9:45
    then it also must remember
all the times that feces and pee
  • 9:45 - 9:47
    has gotten into it.
  • 10:04 - 10:05
Here is what science has to say:
  • 10:06 - 10:08
    When tested in a lab,
    scientists have found
  • 10:08 - 10:13
    that the homeopathic pills
    are primarily sucrose and lactose.
  • 10:13 - 10:18
This is what real medical professionals
    refer to as sugar pills.
  • 10:19 - 10:23
After assessing more than 1800 studies
    on homeopathy,
  • 10:24 - 10:28
    Australia's National Health
    and Medical Research Council
  • 10:28 - 10:33
was only able to find 225 studies
    that were scientifically valid enough
  • 10:34 - 10:35
    to analyze.
  • 10:35 - 10:38
And a systematic review of these studies
    revealed
  • 10:38 - 10:43
    no reasonable evidence to support
any claim that homeopathy is effective
  • 10:43 - 10:46
    in treating any health condition.
  • 10:47 - 10:51
There is no diploma or certificate
    from any school or program
  • 10:51 - 10:55
recognized as a license to practice
    homeopathy in the US.
  • 10:56 - 11:00
Individual State laws and licensing boards
    regulate the practice of homeopathy
  • 11:01 - 11:05
and each States' laws and requirements
    for practices are different.
  • 11:06 - 11:10
    Some States might not have
    any definitive laws
  • 11:10 - 11:11
    on the practice of homeopathy
  • 11:11 - 11:15
but might have laws on the practice of
    alternative therapies
  • 11:15 - 11:17
    by non-licensed practitioners.
  • 11:18 - 11:22
    Sadly, the market for homeopathic
    medicines in the United States
  • 11:22 - 11:26
    is a multi-million dollar industry.
  • 11:43 - 11:46
    Homeopathic remedies are recognized
    and regulated
  • 11:46 - 11:48
by the Food and Drug Administration
  • 11:48 - 11:51
    and are manufactured by
    pharmaceutical companies.
  • 11:52 - 11:55
    Today, all the conventional
    prescription drugs
  • 11:55 - 11:57
    and new over-the-counter drugs
  • 11:57 - 12:03
must undergo thorough testing and review
by the FDA for safety and effectiveness
  • 12:03 - 12:04
    before they can be sold.
  • 12:05 - 12:07
    This requirement is not applied
    to homeopathy
  • 12:08 - 12:09
    at all.
  • 12:10 - 12:11
If you are anything like me,
  • 12:12 - 12:16
you must be shocked by how this medication
can be regulated by the FDA,
  • 12:16 - 12:21
sold in drugstores and that anyone
would stand by this type of remedy.
  • 12:22 - 12:25
    Some of you might say:
"Well, what about the placebo effect?
  • 12:26 - 12:30
"What's the harm if people think and feel
    like they are getting better,
  • 12:30 - 12:32
even if there's nothing in it?"
  • 12:33 - 12:37
The greatest danger occurs when homeopathy
    replaces a conventional treatment,
  • 12:37 - 12:41
as it did in another case recorded
    in a British medical journal.
  • 12:42 - 12:47
A woman had relied on homeopathy
during a trip to Togo, West Africa,
  • 12:47 - 12:51
which resulted in a nearly deadly case
    of malaria.
  • 12:52 - 12:56
This meant she had to endure
    two months of intensive care
  • 12:56 - 12:58
    for multiple organ system failure.
  • 12:59 - 13:04
In her case, the placebo effect
    offered no protection at all.
  • 13:05 - 13:10
In other words, any delay in proving
    effective treatment of some diseases
  • 13:10 - 13:13
can have dangerous and deadly results.
  • 13:14 - 13:18
    Some people even choose
    not to vaccinate their children
  • 13:18 - 13:20
    in favor of homeopathic vaccines.
  • 13:20 - 13:25
As a result, measles and whooping cough
    are making a comeback.
  • 13:26 - 13:29
    Remember baby Hope,
from the beginning of my talk,
  • 13:29 - 13:31
    who died from complications
    from an ear infection?
  • 13:32 - 13:37
She wasn't old enough to have the option
    to deny those homeopathic remedies
  • 13:37 - 13:38
    that caused her death.
  • 13:39 - 13:41
    That's the harm.
  • 13:42 - 13:46
While some people like eating sugar pills
as their immune system does all the work
  • 13:46 - 13:48
to cure their 'flues and colds,
  • 13:48 - 13:51
    others are suffering and dying
    unnecessarily.
  • 14:26 - 14:29
I'm giving you all this information
    to remind you
  • 14:29 - 14:32
to think critically, when it comes to
    some natural remedies,
  • 14:32 - 14:37
if it says it's "homeopathy", remember
there's nothing of value in it,
  • 14:37 - 14:39
    other than the placebo effect.
  • 14:40 - 14:41
    Here's what you can do.
  • 14:41 - 14:46
First and foremost: don't waste your money
    on these scams.
  • 14:46 - 14:50
Second: if you see a homeopathic remedy
    in a drugstore,
  • 14:50 - 14:54
ask the manager why they are selling
    medicine with nothing in it.
  • 14:55 - 15:01
By the way, CVS, Walgreens and GNC
    sell this lie - everyday.
  • 15:02 - 15:05
And third: don't just listen to me.
  • 15:06 - 15:10
    Research the products, their ingredients
and how they are made for yourself.
  • 15:13 - 15:17
You watched me eat an entire bottle of
    pills during this presentation.
  • 15:18 - 15:23
    What I swallowed was 50 Calms-Forte
    homeopathic sleeping pills.
  • 15:23 - 15:26
And by the way, on the bottle, it says:
    "There are no side effects."
  • 15:27 - 15:28
    Really.
  • 15:29 - 15:33
See me after class and you will find
    that I am still standing.
  • 15:33 - 15:40
    >> Good, great!
    (Applause)
