Christian, God is a Father to You - Tim Conway

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    When we're talking about
one God and Father of all
  • 0:03 - 0:05
    who is in all,
  • 0:05 - 0:08
this is not a universal statement
  • 0:08 - 0:10
    about all of creation,
  • 0:10 - 0:13
nor is it some sort of universal
fatherhood of God among all men.
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    This is a statement - remember -
  • 0:15 - 0:19
that unifies the people of God.
  • 0:19 - 0:23
    This is like remember
    back to those words -
  • 0:23 - 0:26
    Jesus said to Mary,
  • 0:26 - 0:31
    "Go tell My brothers
  • 0:31 - 0:35
I'm going to My God, My Father -
  • 0:35 - 0:38
    your God, your Father."
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    "Go tell My brothers."
  • 0:40 - 0:44
    "Your Father."
  • 0:44 - 0:45
    That's the idea here.
  • 0:45 - 0:50
That's the idea behind "all" -
  • 0:50 - 0:54
    a uniquely Christian expression.
  • 0:54 - 0:58
The thing is, I can find
    in the Old Testament
  • 0:58 - 0:59
where God is called "Father" -
  • 0:59 - 1:00
    the book of Malachi,
  • 1:00 - 1:05
but the Jews did not call God "Father."
  • 1:05 - 1:08
Catholics - yeah, they may once in awhile
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    throw that term around,
  • 1:10 - 1:14
but they focus on the mother.
  • 1:14 - 1:20
Muslims do not call Allah "Father"
  • 1:20 - 1:21
    because he's not a father.
  • 1:21 - 1:25
    He's not a father figure.
  • 1:25 - 1:30
We have one God and Father of all.
  • 1:30 - 1:32
This is Christian expression to say:
  • 1:32 - 1:37
you have received the Spirit of adoption
  • 1:37 - 1:42
by whom you cry, "Abba, Father."
  • 1:42 - 1:47
Notice: it says "Father of all."
  • 1:47 - 1:48
    Don't you like that?
  • 1:48 - 1:51
    "Father of all."
  • 1:51 - 1:55
God is not like a father.
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    He is a Father.
  • 1:57 - 2:02
He is a Father to every
    one of His children.
  • 2:02 - 2:04
To all - that's so unifying.
  • 2:04 - 2:11
    Christian, Christian, are you single?
  • 2:11 - 2:17
    He's your Father.
  • 2:17 - 2:21
    Are your children lost?
  • 2:21 - 2:24
    He's your Father.
  • 2:24 - 2:27
Christian, do you feel empty? Forgotten?
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    Lonely? Despised? Suffering?
  • 2:30 - 2:33
    Cold? Distant?
  • 2:33 - 2:34
    You have to hear it:
  • 2:34 - 2:38
    He's Father of all.
  • 2:38 - 2:41
Sometimes we look at it and we say:
  • 2:41 - 2:42
Oh, but my brother or sister -
  • 2:42 - 2:44
    they had this certain experience.
  • 2:44 - 2:47
    He's a Father to all.
  • 2:47 - 2:50
He's a Father to all that come to Him
  • 2:50 - 2:52
    by Christ Jesus.
  • 2:52 - 2:56
    Through Christ we have access
  • 2:56 - 2:59
in one Spirit to the Father.
  • 2:59 - 3:01
If your trust is in Christ,
    you have access.
  • 3:01 - 3:03
    It doesn't matter if somebody
  • 3:03 - 3:04
    has experienced something else
  • 3:04 - 3:07
    or if they're on the
    mountaintop right now,
  • 3:07 - 3:10
or if God has seemingly given them
    blessings that you don't have,
  • 3:10 - 3:12
    He's a Father to all.
  • 3:12 - 3:13
    And I'll tell you this,
  • 3:13 - 3:15
you're in the palm of His hand
  • 3:15 - 3:16
    and nobody plucks you out.
  • 3:16 - 3:18
He guards you. He protects you.
  • 3:18 - 3:19
    He knows you.
  • 3:19 - 3:22
    What did Jesus say?
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    There in Matthew 6?
  • 3:24 - 3:26
He said when it comes to clothes,
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    when it comes to food,
  • 3:28 - 3:32
    He said your Father knows
    what you have need of.
  • 3:32 - 3:35
    He's mindful.
  • 3:35 - 3:37
    He knows what you need.
  • 3:37 - 3:39
    So often we feel like
  • 3:39 - 3:41
    He's not giving us what
we think He should give us
  • 3:41 - 3:44
so we feel like we're somehow a stepchild.
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    No.
  • 3:46 - 3:56
There is one God and Father of all.
  • 3:56 - 3:58
And I've heard certain Christians -
  • 3:58 - 4:01
I've heard some Christians just recently
  • 4:01 - 4:04
tell me that at certain points
  • 4:04 - 4:06
    in their Christian life,
  • 4:06 - 4:08
they were confronted by certain trials
  • 4:08 - 4:13
or certain situations where they felt like
  • 4:13 - 4:18
    they might even fall away.
  • 4:18 - 4:20
    You know what?
  • 4:20 - 4:23
    Jesus is talking to His
    disciples one day -
  • 4:23 - 4:27
you know the day - His last day.
  • 4:27 - 4:30
His last day before the cross.
  • 4:30 - 4:36
His last day before the grave.
  • 4:36 - 4:39
And you know what He said to them?
  • 4:39 - 4:43
    He said guys, I'm telling
    you what I'm telling you
  • 4:43 - 4:47
so that you won't fall away.
  • 4:47 - 4:48
And do you know one of the things
  • 4:48 - 4:52
    that He told them so
    that they not fall away?
  • 4:52 - 4:56
    He says in that day,
  • 4:56 - 5:00
you're going to ask in My name.
  • 5:00 - 5:02
    And He said this:
  • 5:02 - 5:07
"I do not say to you that I will
ask the Father on your behalf."
  • 5:07 - 5:08
    Have you ever read that?
  • 5:08 - 5:10
    If you just stopped right
    there, it's like, "what?"
  • 5:10 - 5:12
    (incomplete thought)
  • 5:12 - 5:17
    "That's going to cause
me to not fall away, Lord?"
  • 5:17 - 5:21
    "That You're not going
    to intercede for me?"
  • 5:21 - 5:23
    Which isn't what He's saying.
  • 5:23 - 5:25
    That's not the emphasis there.
  • 5:25 - 5:29
    But He says to them:
  • 5:29 - 5:31
"I am not saying to you that I'm going to
  • 5:31 - 5:35
ask the Father on your behalf."
  • 5:35 - 5:37
    What? Why?
  • 5:37 - 5:40
And He comes back with this:
  • 5:40 - 5:46
"Because the Father Himself loves you."
  • 5:46 - 5:50
    Now, of course, that came
just as fast as the rest,
  • 5:50 - 5:52
so they didn't have really time to stop
  • 5:52 - 5:55
    like I did there.
  • 5:55 - 5:57
But you just think about that.
  • 5:57 - 6:00
What Jesus is saying is this:
  • 6:00 - 6:01
    Just look, guys.
  • 6:01 - 6:04
You know that I've loved you.
  • 6:04 - 6:06
    He showed that to them.
  • 6:06 - 6:08
He expressed His love to them.
  • 6:08 - 6:11
He convinced them of His love.
  • 6:11 - 6:13
    But what He was saying
    as He's getting ready
  • 6:13 - 6:18
to go away so that they not fall away:
  • 6:18 - 6:22
My Father's love for you is sufficient
  • 6:22 - 6:24
for God to act on your behalf
  • 6:24 - 6:27
    whether I'm there or not.
  • 6:27 - 6:30
    Oh, He'd be there.
He wasn't going to leave us.
  • 6:30 - 6:33
    He'd still intercede for us.
  • 6:33 - 6:36
But the Father Himself loves you.
  • 6:36 - 6:37
    Now here's the thing:
  • 6:37 - 6:40
    We're talking about unity.
  • 6:40 - 6:44
What unifies us more than that?
  • 6:44 - 6:48
    The Father loves you.
  • 6:48 - 6:51
This clip was from the full sermon:
  • 6:51 - 6:53
