Outliers don’t fit the pattern we’re used to seeing. An outlier can be the teenager who’s towering over his peers at 6’10”. Or the little guy that can wolf down 60 hot dogs in an eating contest. In regression analysis, a statistical outlier can have a major impact on the variable relationship we’re trying to understand.
