DIY Wrist Pin Cushion from Scraps | Style Pile #21

  • 0:00 - 0:01
    Hello!
  • 0:01 - 0:06
Welcome back - if you've missed the first
three, this is a 4-part mini series within-a-series
  • 0:06 - 0:11
where I try and reuse a bunch of scrap fabrics
that I have in my "Style Pile".
  • 0:11 - 0:16
In the last 3 episodes, we made a fox plushie,
an eyemask, some embroidery hoop art, all
  • 0:16 - 0:21
out of scrap fabrics, and in this episode
we'll be making a pincushion that sits on
  • 0:21 - 0:22
    your wrist.
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    So, let's get started!
  • 0:24 - 0:27
The fourth and final project is going to be
    a wrist pin-cushion!
  • 0:27 - 0:32
So to make this, I grabbed some of this brown,
floral fabric, again – apparently I have
  • 0:32 - 0:36
a LOT of scraps of this fabric – and I traced
out a circle on it, using the embroidery hoop
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    from the previous tutorial.
  • 0:38 - 0:42
For reference, the diameter of the circle
    is about 5 inches.
  • 0:42 - 0:44
And then I cut this circle out.
  • 0:44 - 0:48
Now what I’m gunna do next is to do a long
basting stitch around the edges of the circle,
  • 0:48 - 0:50
and for that I’m going to use a needle and
    thread.
  • 0:50 - 0:54
Now a basting stitch is a LONG running stitch,
    that looks like this.
  • 0:54 - 0:59
And after I stitched around the edges, I left
my needle threaded, and I pulled on the thread
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    carefully… so that this happened.
  • 1:01 - 1:05
I’ve ended up with a little round pouch,
with an opening at the top.
  • 1:05 - 1:09
And into that opening, I’m going to be putting
in small shredded fabric scraps as filling,
  • 1:09 - 1:13
just like I did for the plushie, until the
    pin "coshion"... coshion?
  • 1:13 - 1:15
Until the pin CUSHION feels nice and firm.
  • 1:21 - 1:24
And once it was, I pulled the thread tight
to close up the hole, and I sewed it closed
  • 1:24 - 1:28
by doing some more stitches around the hole,
    like this.
  • 1:38 - 1:42
Annnnd when it was all closed, I tied off
the thread with a few knots.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
And this is the main part of the pincushion!
  • 1:44 - 1:48
Now, I wanted to turn it into a wrist pin
cushion, so, one that’ll sit on my wrist
  • 1:48 - 1:52
like a bracelet while I'm sewing – and because
I don’t wanna stab myself with pins while
  • 1:52 - 1:57
I’m wearing it on my wrist, I need something
in the way… this old jar lid should work
  • 1:57 - 1:58
    well!
  • 1:58 - 2:01
I’ve also seen a tutorial where people can
glue it to the top of a jar lid, and put sewing
  • 2:01 - 2:05
stuff inside, which is also a really cute
thing you can do – but that’s not what
  • 2:05 - 2:06
    I’m doing today.
  • 2:06 - 2:10
So next I spray-painted the lid black, so
that it looked less like an old pesto lid,
  • 2:14 - 2:18
and then I measured a piece of elastic around
my wrist, added an extra inch to this, so
  • 2:18 - 2:22
it would be comfortable, and then I sewed
this elastic piece into a loop.
  • 2:22 - 2:26
Then I put the elastic around the lid like
so, and I got a hot glue gun, and I put a
  • 2:26 - 2:29
big glob of glue into the centre...
  • 2:30 - 2:35
…and I used way too much hot glue gun because I don’t know what I'm doing.
  • 2:35 - 2:36
I have a confession to make.
  • 2:36 - 2:38
I have never used a hot glue gun before.
  • 2:38 - 2:40
This is my first time ever using a hot glue
    gun.
  • 2:40 - 2:41
    I know, right?!
  • 2:41 - 2:44
What kind of DIY channel even is this?
  • 2:44 - 2:45
    YEAH, okay.
  • 2:45 - 2:47
    Slap it on in there.
  • 2:47 - 2:48
    This will work.
  • 2:48 - 2:52
I made sure the elastic got glued down in
the middle, with the pin cushion on top.
  • 2:52 - 2:57
Then I pressed it down hard and I prayed to
the hot glue gun gods, and.. it worked - all
  • 2:57 - 2:58
    good!
  • 2:58 - 3:01
Everything is glued into place, and this is
    what it looks like finished!
  • 3:01 - 3:05
So yeah - I find wrist pin cushions really
useful because they move with me when I move
  • 3:05 - 3:08
around my sewing room, because they're literally...
    stuck on my wrist.
  • 3:08 - 3:11
And it means I don’t forget where I left
    my pins!
  • 3:11 - 3:14
I also glued a smaller version to the top
of my sewing machine, because I’m always
  • 3:14 - 3:18
wishing that I had somewhere to put pins while
at my machine… well, now I do!
  • 3:18 - 3:23
Anyway, I hope this mini series gave you all
a little bit of inspiration for making something
  • 3:23 - 3:28
out of scrap fabric pieces, or super old worn
out clothes, instead of just throwing those
  • 3:28 - 3:31
things all away and adding more unnecessary
    waste to our landfills.
  • 3:31 - 3:35
Also, these 4 projects make great gifts, they
are simple and easy to do, and they'll make
  • 3:35 - 3:37
you feel like you've done something good for
    the world.
  • 3:37 - 3:42
Also, I found through making this mini-series
that working with a limited amount of fabric
  • 3:42 - 3:46
really pushes you to be more creative with
what you've got, and I really enjoyed making
  • 3:46 - 3:48
all these projects for that reason.
  • 3:48 - 3:50
It really kicked my sewing brain back into
    gear!
  • 3:50 - 3:54
And I really think I'd like to try and do
more scrap fabric tutorials in the future
  • 3:54 - 3:58
    - especially as my scrap fabric pile... well...
  • 3:58 - 4:02
I mean, even after 4 episodes, it still - it
    still looks like this!
  • 4:02 - 4:05
I hardly even made a dent in it.
  • 4:05 - 4:06
    *sigh laugh* So...
  • 4:06 - 4:09
I guess that means plenty more tutorials to
    come.
