Names Of Open Strings (Guitar Lesson BC-133) Guitar for beginners Stage 3

  • 0:06 - 0:09
Hi, how're you doing ? Justin here.
In this little video today, we're
  • 0:09 - 0:12
going to be checking out the names of the open strings,
  • 0:12 - 0:17
i.e. what their note name is, for each one of these open
  • 0:17 - 0:19
friends. because eventually, we need to learn what the
  • 0:19 - 0:21
notes are all over the guitar and we're going to start with
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    these open strings.
  • 0:23 - 0:26
So first of all, we need to create a little bit of space over
  • 0:26 - 0:29
here, for me to stick a little neck diagram up, so if I just
  • 0:29 - 0:34
kind of lean over . Okay, about now, ping, up comes
  • 0:34 - 0:40
this little neck diagram and you'll see there,
    E A D G B E.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
And these are the names of the open strings.
  • 0:43 - 0:46
And what I've just done is name them
    from the thickest string.
  • 0:46 - 0:50
See, if I play it at the same time now,
    we've got E
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    A
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    D
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    G
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    B
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    and E again.
  • 1:00 - 1:04
Of course noticing now that the two outside
    strings are both E's
  • 1:04 - 1:07
Which is why somethimes I call it the fat string or the
  • 1:07 - 1:10
thick string and the skinny string or the thin string because
  • 1:10 - 1:13
I can't both call it the E string 'cause they're both E strings.
  • 1:13 - 1:16
Now, the thing that's going to really help you remember the
  • 1:16 - 1:20
names of the open strings is to make up a funny little rhyme
  • 1:20 - 1:22
Now, the one that I used when I was groing up, was
  • 1:22 - 1:26
Easter Bunny Gets Drunk After Easter, which starts with the
  • 1:26 - 1:33
thin string: Easter Bunny Gets Drunk After Easter.
  • 1:33 - 1:35
Now, this one for me if kind of funny, the idea of the easter
  • 1:35 - 1:38
bunny going around, delivering eggs to all of the bad kids,
  • 1:38 - 1:40
being a bit upset about it, going back to his little burrow and
  • 1:40 - 1:43
knocking off a bottle of Jack Daniels. I think it's kind of fun.
  • 1:43 - 1:46
So therefore, it was easier for me to remember. But you can
  • 1:46 - 1:50
make up any other rhyme that you like. There's quite a few
  • 1:50 - 1:55
ones that I heard that I though have been quite funny.
  • 1:55 - 2:01
Every Boy Gets Dizzy Around Elle which is Elle Macpherson,
  • 2:01 - 2:04
my favourite super model. So, Every Boy Gets Dizzy Around
  • 2:04 - 2:07
Elle: my little tribute to the the wonderful Elle Macpherson.
  • 2:07 - 2:11
We could have also, one of my students told me one,
  • 2:11 - 2:13
    starting from the thick string:
  • 2:13 - 2:19
Eddy Ate Dynamite, Good Bye Eddy. So that one is going
  • 2:19 - 2:22
from the thick strings. It really doesn't matter. You can make
  • 2:22 - 2:26
up your own rhyme, so long as you have a rhyme that will
  • 2:26 - 2:30
help you remember the open string note names. And this
  • 2:30 - 2:33
is really important because very, very soon, i.e. in the next
  • 2:33 - 2:35
stage, we're going to be starting to look at all of the note
  • 2:35 - 2:38
names and the notes in the open position. If you don't know
  • 2:38 - 2:41
the open strings yet, it's going to be kind of, well
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    next to impossible.
