-
Not Synced
I would like to start
-
Not Synced
with the story of Mary,
-
Not Synced
a woman from an African village.
-
Not Synced
Her first memories
-
Not Synced
are of her family fleeing violent riots
-
Not Synced
orchestrated
-
Not Synced
by the ruling political party.
-
Not Synced
Her brother was murdered
-
Not Synced
by the state-sponsored militia,
-
Not Synced
and she was raped more than once
-
Not Synced
just because she belonged
to the wrong party.
-
Not Synced
One morning, a month before the election,
-
Not Synced
Mary's village was called to
another intimidation meeting.
-
Not Synced
In this meeting, these men
standing in front of them
-
Not Synced
telling them, "We know who you are,
-
Not Synced
we know who you will vote for,
-
Not Synced
and if you're not going
to drop the right paper,
-
Not Synced
we're going to take revenge."
-
Not Synced
But for Mary, this meeting is different.
-
Not Synced
She feels different.
-
Not Synced
This time, she's waiting for this meeting,
-
Not Synced
because this time, she's carrying
-
Not Synced
a small hidden camera in her dress,
-
Not Synced
a camera that nobody else can see.
-
Not Synced
Nobody is allowed to film
in these meetings.
-
Not Synced
You risk your life if you do.
-
Not Synced
Mary knows that, but she also knows
-
Not Synced
that the only way to stop them
-
Not Synced
and to protect herself
-
Not Synced
and her community
-
Not Synced
is to expose their intimidation,
-
Not Synced
to make sure they understand
-
Not Synced
somebody is following them,
-
Not Synced
to break the impunity they feel.
-
Not Synced
Mary and her friends were filming
-
Not Synced
for months undercover
-
Not Synced
the intimidation of
the ruling political party.
-
Not Synced
(Video) [Filmed With Hidden Cameras]
-
Not Synced
Man: We are going to speak
about the upcoming elections.
-
Not Synced
Nothing can stup us from doing what we want.
-
Not Synced
If we hear you are with [the opposition]
-
Not Synced
we will not forgive you.
-
Not Synced
[Militia Intimidation Rally]
-
Not Synced
[The Party] can torture you at any time.
-
Not Synced
The youth can beat you.
-
Not Synced
[Disruption of Political Meeting]
-
Not Synced
For those who lie, saying they are back with [the Party],
-
Not Synced
your time is running out.
-
Not Synced
[Party Youth Militia]
-
Not Synced
Some have died because they rebelled.
-
Not Synced
Some have lost their homes.
-
Not Synced
If you don't work together with [the Party],
-
Not Synced
you will lead a very bad life.
-
Not Synced
Oren Yakobovich: These images
were broadcast all over the world,
-
Not Synced
but more importantly,
-
Not Synced
they have been broadcast
-
Not Synced
back to the community.
-
Not Synced
The perpetrators saw them too.
-
Not Synced
They understood somebody
is following them.
-
Not Synced
They got scared. Impunity was broken.
-
Not Synced
Mary and her friends forced
-
Not Synced
the ruling political party
-
Not Synced
not to use violence during the election,
-
Not Synced
and saved hundreds of lives.
-
Not Synced
Mary is just one of hundreds of people
-
Not Synced
that my organization had helped
-
Not Synced
to document human rights violations
-
Not Synced
using cameras.
-
Not Synced
My background should have
led me to a different direction.
-
Not Synced
I was born in Israel
-
Not Synced
to a right-wing family,
-
Not Synced
and as long as I remember myself,
-
Not Synced
I wanted to join the Israeli army
-
Not Synced
to serve my country and prove that I was
-
Not Synced
what I believed was our right
-
Not Synced
for the whole land.
-
Not Synced
I joined the Israeli army just after
-
Not Synced
the first intifada,
the first Palestinian uprising,
-
Not Synced
and I served in one of the hard-minded,
-
Not Synced
toughest, aggressive infantry units,
-
Not Synced
and I got the biggest gun in my platoon.
-
Not Synced
Quite fast, I became an officer
-
Not Synced
and got soldiers under my command,
-
Not Synced
and as time passed, I started
serving in the West Bank,
-
Not Synced
and I saw these images.
-
Not Synced
I didn't like what I saw.
-
Not Synced
It took me a while,
-
Not Synced
but eventually I refused
to serve in the West Bank
-
Not Synced
and had to spend time in jail.
-
Not Synced
It was a bit
-
Not Synced
— (Applause) —
-
Not Synced
It was not that bad, I have to say.
-
Not Synced
It was a bit like being in a hotel,
-
Not Synced
but with very shitty food.
-
Not Synced
In jail, I kept thinking that
-
Not Synced
I need people to know,
-
Not Synced
I need people to understand
-
Not Synced
what's the reality
in the West Bank looks like.
-
Not Synced
I need them to hear what I heard,
-
Not Synced
I need them to see what I saw,
-
Not Synced
but I also understood, we needed
-
Not Synced
Palestinians themselves,
-
Not Synced
the people that are suffering,
-
Not Synced
to be able to tell their own stories,
-
Not Synced
not journalists or filmmakers
-
Not Synced
that are coming outside of the situation.
-
Not Synced
I joined a human rights organization,
-
Not Synced
Israeli human rights
organization called B'Tselem.
-
Not Synced
Together, we analyzed the West Bank
-
Not Synced
and picked a hundred families that
are living in the most risky places:
-
Not Synced
close to checkpoints, near army bases,
-
Not Synced
side by side with settlers.
-
Not Synced
We gave them cameras and training.
-
Not Synced
Quite fast, we started getting
-
Not Synced
very disturbing images
-
Not Synced
about how the settlers
-
Not Synced
and the soldiers are abusing them.
-
Not Synced
I would like to share with you
-
Not Synced
two clips from this project.
-
Not Synced
Both of them were broadcast in Israel,
-
Not Synced
and it created a massive debate,
-
Not Synced
and I have to warn you,
-
Not Synced
some of you might find them
-
Not Synced
quite explicit.
-
Not Synced
The masked men you will see in the first clips
-
Not Synced
are Jewish settlers.
-
Not Synced
Minutes before the camera was turned on,
-
Not Synced
they approached a Palestinian family
-
Not Synced
that was working their land
-
Not Synced
and told them that they
have to leave the land,
-
Not Synced
because this land belongs
to the Jewish settlers.
-
Not Synced
The Palestinians refused.
-
Not Synced
Let's see what happened.
-
Not Synced
The masked men that are approaching
-
Not Synced
are Jewish settlers.
-
Not Synced
They are approaching
the Palestinian family.
-
Not Synced
This is a demonstration in the West Bank.
-
Not Synced
The guy in green is Palestinian.
-
Not Synced
He will be arrested in a second.
-
Not Synced
Here you see him
blindfolded and handcuffed.
-
Not Synced
In a few seconds, he regrets he came
-
Not Synced
to this demonstration.
-
Not Synced
He'd been shot in the foot
-
Not Synced
with a rubber bullet.
-
Not Synced
He is okay.
-
Not Synced
Not all the settlers and the soldiers
-
Not Synced
are acting this way.
-
Not Synced
We're talking about a tiny minority,
-
Not Synced
but they have to be brought to justice.
-
Not Synced
This clips, and others like them,
-
Not Synced
forced the army and the police
to start investigations.
-
Not Synced
They've been shown in Israel, of course,
-
Not Synced
and the Israeli public
was exposed to them also.
-
Not Synced
This project redefined
the struggle for human rights
-
Not Synced
in the Occupied Territories,
-
Not Synced
and we managed to reduce
-
Not Synced
the number of violent attacks
-
Not Synced
in the West Bank.
-
Not Synced
The success of this project
got me thinking
-
Not Synced
how I can take the same methodology
-
Not Synced
to other places in the world.
-
Not Synced
Now, we tend to believe that today,
-
Not Synced
with all of the technology,
-
Not Synced
the smartphone and the Internet,
-
Not Synced
we are able to see and understand
-
Not Synced
most of what's happening in the world,
-
Not Synced
and people are able to tell their story,
-
Not Synced
but it's only partly true.
-
Not Synced
Until today, with all
the technology we have,
-
Not Synced
less than half of the world's population
-
Not Synced
has access to the Internet,
-
Not Synced
and more than three billion people
-
Not Synced
— I'm repeating the number,
-
Not Synced
three billion people — are consuming news
-
Not Synced
that is censored by those in power.
-
Not Synced
More or less around the same,
-
Not Synced
I'm approached by a great guy
named Uri Fruchtmann.
-
Not Synced
He's a filmmaker and an activist.
-
Not Synced
We understood we are
thinking along the same line,
-
Not Synced
and we decided to establish Videre,
-
Not Synced
our organization, together.
-
Not Synced
While building the organization in London,
-
Not Synced
we've been traveling undercover to places
-
Not Synced
where community was suffering from abuses,
-
Not Synced
where mass atrocities were happening,
-
Not Synced
and there was a lack of reporting.
-
Not Synced
We tried to understand how we can help.
-
Not Synced
There were four things that I learned.
-
Not Synced
The first thing is that we have to engage
-
Not Synced
with communities that are
living in the rural areas,
-
Not Synced
where violations are happening
far from the public eyes.
-
Not Synced
We need to partner with them,
-
Not Synced
and we need to understand which images
-
Not Synced
are not making it out there
-
Not Synced
and help them to document them.
-
Not Synced
The second thing I learned
-
Not Synced
is that we have to enable them to film
-
Not Synced
in a safe way.
-
Not Synced
Security has to be the priority.
-
Not Synced
Where I used to work before,
in the West Bank,
-
Not Synced
one can take a camera out,
-
Not Synced
most likely not going to get shot,
-
Not Synced
but in places we wanted to work,
-
Not Synced
just try to pull a phone out,
and you're dead, literally dead.
-
Not Synced
This is why we decided
-
Not Synced
to take the operation undercover
-
Not Synced
when necessary,
-
Not Synced
and use mostly hidden cameras.
-
Not Synced
Unfortunately, I can't show you
the hidden cameras we're using today
-
Not Synced
for obvious reasons,
-
Not Synced
but this is cameras we used before.
-
Not Synced
You can buy them off the shelf.
-
Not Synced
Today, we're building a custom-made
-
Not Synced
hidden camera,
-
Not Synced
like the one that Mary was wearing
-
Not Synced
in her dress to film
the intimidation meeting
-
Not Synced
of the ruling political party.
-
Not Synced
It's a camera that nobody can see
-
Not Synced
that blends into the environment,
-
Not Synced
into the surroundings.
-
Not Synced
Now, filming securities go beyond
-
Not Synced
using hidden cameras.
-
Not Synced
Being secure starts way before
-
Not Synced
the activist is turning the camera on.
-
Not Synced
To keep our partners safe,
-
Not Synced
we work to understand
the risk of every location
-
Not Synced
and of every shot before it's happened,
-
Not Synced
building a backup plan
if something goes wrong,
-
Not Synced
and make sure we have everything in place
-
Not Synced
before our operations start.
-
Not Synced
The third thing I learned
-
Not Synced
is the importance of verification.
-
Not Synced
You can have an amazing shot of atrocity,
-
Not Synced
but if you can't verify it,
-
Not Synced
it's worth nothing.
-
Not Synced
Recently, like in the ongoing war in Syria
-
Not Synced
or the war in Gaza, we've seen images
-
Not Synced
that are staged or brought
from a different conflict.
-
Not Synced
This misinformation destroys
-
Not Synced
the credibility of the source,
-
Not Synced
and it's harmed the credibility of other
-
Not Synced
reliable and trustworthy sources.
-
Not Synced
We use a variety of ways to make sure
-
Not Synced
we can verify the information
-
Not Synced
and we can trust the materials.
-
Not Synced
It's starting with vetting the partners,
-
Not Synced
understanding who they are,
-
Not Synced
and working with them very intensively.
-
Not Synced
How do you film a location?
-
Not Synced
You film road signs, you film ???,
-
Not Synced
you film newspapers.
-
Not Synced
We are checking maps, looking maps,
-
Not Synced
double-checking the information,
-
Not Synced
and looking also at the metadata
-
Not Synced
of the material.
-
Not Synced
Now, the fourth and the most
important thing I learned
-
Not Synced
is how you use images to create
-
Not Synced
a positive change.
-
Not Synced
To have an effect,
-
Not Synced
the key thing is how you use the material.
-
Not Synced
Today, we're working
with hundreds of activists
-
Not Synced
filming undercover.
-
Not Synced
We work with them both
-
Not Synced
to understand the situation on the ground
-
Not Synced
and which images are missing
-
Not Synced
to describe it,
-
Not Synced
who are the ones
-
Not Synced
that are influencing the situation,
-
Not Synced
and when to release the material
-
Not Synced
to advance the struggle.
-
Not Synced
Sometimes, it's about
putting it in the media,
-
Not Synced
mostly local ones, to create awareness.
-
Not Synced
Sometimes it's working
with decision makers,
-
Not Synced
to change laws.
-
Not Synced
Sometimes, it's working with lawyers
-
Not Synced
to use as evidence in a court.
-
Not Synced
But more than often,
-
Not Synced
the most effective way
-
Not Synced
to create a social change
-
Not Synced
is to work within the community.
-
Not Synced
I want to give you one example.
-
Not Synced
Fatuma is part of a network of women
-
Not Synced
that are fighting abuses in Kenya.
-
Not Synced
Women in her community
have been harassed constantly
-
Not Synced
on their way to school
-
Not Synced
and on their way to work.
-
Not Synced
They are trying to change the behavior
-
Not Synced
of the community from inside.
-
Not Synced
In the next clip,
-
Not Synced
Fatuma is taking us with her
-
Not Synced
on her journey to work.
-
Not Synced
Her voice is super-imposed
-
Not Synced
on images that she filmed herself
-
Not Synced
using hidden cameras.
-
Not Synced
(Video) Fatuma Chiusku: My name
is Fatuma Chiusku.
-
Not Synced
I'm 32 years old, a mother,
-
Not Synced
And Ziwa La Ng'Ombe is my home.
-
Not Synced
Each morning, I ride the mini-bus
-
Not Synced
Number 11.
-
Not Synced
But instead of a peaceful journey to work
-
Not Synced
each day begins with fear.
-
Not Synced
Come with me now
-
Not Synced
and use my eyes
-
Not Synced
to feel what I feel.
-
Not Synced
As I walk, I think to myself:
-
Not Synced
Will I be touched?
-
Not Synced
Grabbed?
-
Not Synced
Violated by this conductor again?
-
Not Synced
Even the men inside
-
Not Synced
the way they look at me
-
Not Synced
touch my body, rub against me,
-
Not Synced
grab me,
-
Not Synced
and now, as I sit in my seat
-
Not Synced
I only wish my mind was full
of thoughts for my day,
-
Not Synced
my dreams, my children at school,
-
Not Synced
but instead I worry about
the moment when we will arrive
-
Not Synced
and I will be violated again.
-
Not Synced
OY: Today, there is a new front
-
Not Synced
in the fight for human rights.
-
Not Synced
I used to carry a big gun.
-
Not Synced
Now, I am carrying this.
-
Not Synced
This is much more powerful
-
Not Synced
and a much, much more effective weapon.
-
Not Synced
But we have to use its power wisely
-
Not Synced
By putting the right images
-
Not Synced
in the right hands at the right time,
-
Not Synced
we can truly create an impact.
-
Not Synced
Thank you.
-
Not Synced
(Applause)
-
Not Synced
Thank you.
-
Not Synced
