How To Lengthen a Dress! | The Style Pile #8

  • 0:00 - 0:03
There is a box, in the corner of my sewing room.
  • 0:03 - 0:07
It is a box whose content have not seen the light of day for many a month.
  • 0:07 - 0:09
Many crafters will be familiar with this box.
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    In all of its forms.
  • 0:11 - 0:14
There's the ever growing amorphous lump that lies underneath your desk
  • 0:15 - 0:16
    the monster underneath your bed
  • 0:17 - 0:20
The stuff you vacuumed packed in a fit of organization and stuffed into your garage
  • 0:20 - 0:22
in the hopes that'd you never have to deal with it again
  • 0:22 - 0:23
    This my friends
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    is the unfinished sewing pile
  • 0:35 - 0:39
The item that I'm grabbing out of the box today is actually a dress of my mums
  • 0:39 - 0:41
that I recently took from my parents house
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    without my mum realizing
  • 0:43 - 0:45
Now I know that this dress is too short for my mum
  • 0:45 - 0:47
and because of that she is unable to wear it
  • 0:48 - 0:50
so the plan is to fix it for her
  • 0:50 - 0:52
and to make it longer as a Mother's Day present
  • 0:52 - 0:54
So the first thing that I did was to grab the fabric
  • 0:54 - 0:56
that I wanted to use to extend the dress.
  • 0:56 - 0:59
I wanted to something to match the colour and the arm hole cuffs
  • 0:59 - 1:02
So I found this really similar fabric
  • 1:02 - 1:04
A black non stretchy linen of medium weight
  • 1:04 - 1:06
To get the right amount of fabric for the bottom of the dress
  • 1:06 - 1:08
I placed this linen below the dress like this
  • 1:08 - 1:12
and then aligned up the top edge of the linen with the bottom of the dress
  • 1:12 - 1:14
I folded over the linen like this
  • 1:14 - 1:17
Now, I wanted to extend the dress by this amount
  • 1:17 - 1:21
So, I drew a rectangle onto the folded linen like this
  • 1:21 - 1:23
Now the length of the rectangle
  • 1:23 - 1:26
is doubled the desired amount that I wanted to extend it by
  • 1:26 - 1:29
plus one inch for the seam allowance
  • 1:29 - 1:32
and the width is just the same as the dress plus an inch
  • 1:32 - 1:36
for both seam allowance and a little extra just for insurance
  • 1:36 - 1:38
So I cut out this rectange
  • 1:38 - 1:40
cutting through both layers of fabric
  • 1:40 - 1:43
and now I have a rectangle of linen that's this big
  • 1:43 - 1:44
    What I did next
  • 1:44 - 1:47
was to fold this linen piece in half length wise like this
  • 1:47 - 1:49
Then I gave it an iron
  • 1:49 - 1:52
and then I sewed down both ends of the strip of fabric, like this
  • 1:52 - 1:56
The stitching down this folded edge will make a kind of fake hem.
  • 1:56 - 2:00
Now, if you're thinking "Annika, why did you bother with that extra long rectangle
  • 2:00 - 2:02
if you were just going to fold it and make a fake hem?"
  • 2:02 - 2:04
Well, there's two reason's for this
  • 2:04 - 2:07
1 is that I wanted to make it just as thick, as the cuffs and the collar
  • 2:07 - 2:09
    which are also two layers
  • 2:09 - 2:11
and 2 is that, I just hate hemming things
  • 2:11 - 2:13
and if i can avoid it, I will
  • 2:13 - 2:15
and I also think that this method looks a little bit more neat.
  • 2:15 - 2:19
To sew I used a straight stitch and a thread in a matching colour
  • 2:19 - 2:20
    Then, once I'd done that
  • 2:20 - 2:23
I folded the piece of material in half, this way
  • 2:23 - 2:26
I matched up the folded edge with the side of the dress on the left side
  • 2:26 - 2:30
and then I made an imaginary line extending down from the right side of the dress
  • 2:30 - 2:33
and then I drew this line onto the black linen material
  • 2:33 - 2:35
and then, I sewed down this line
  • 2:35 - 2:38
through all four layers of material, again using a straight stitch
  • 2:38 - 2:42
Now, I don't want the raw edges of this piece to fray once it's attached to the dress
  • 2:42 - 2:44
so what I do next is going to stop them fraying
  • 2:44 - 2:47
Now one method to stop fraying is to use a pair of scissors like this
  • 2:47 - 2:48
    called pinking shears
  • 2:48 - 2:51
and cut off the excess fabric from the raw edges
  • 2:51 - 2:54
You can also use a product like Fray Check on the edges
  • 2:54 - 2:58
or if you have an overlocker like I do, you can go over the raw edges
  • 2:58 - 3:02
whatever method you've used to prevent fraying, this bit can now be attached to the dress
  • 3:02 - 3:07
so to attach it to the dress, I lay it down underneath the dress, inside out
  • 3:07 - 3:10
so with that ugly seam visible, with the fake hem part at the top
  • 3:10 - 3:13
and the fixed up raw edges at the bottom
  • 3:13 - 3:16
and then I slip this on over the top of the dress, like this
  • 3:17 - 3:21
and I match up the bottom of the dress with the bottom of the linen material
  • 3:24 - 3:26
Next, I pin everything in place
  • 3:26 - 3:28
and then I simply sew the linen material onto the dress
  • 3:28 - 3:31
all the way around the hem, like this
  • 3:31 - 3:33
I've also set my needle, slightly to the left of centre
  • 3:34 - 3:37
so that I will sew past the old hem that was on the dress
  • 3:37 - 3:39
Then, and this is always my favourite part
  • 3:39 - 3:41
    I unfold it and
  • 3:41 - 3:42
    TA-DA!
  • 3:42 - 3:43
This is what it looks like
  • 3:43 - 3:45
Now, at first I thought that my sewing was really wonky
  • 3:45 - 3:49
because the houndstooth pattern didn't exactly align up nicely with the edge
  • 3:49 - 3:50
    but then
  • 3:50 - 3:53
I realized that the houndstooth was already really wonky along hem
  • 3:53 - 3:56
oh well, there's nothing I can really do about that
  • 3:56 - 3:59
Anyway, this isn't a huge issue and you can't really tell that it's a bit wonky
  • 3:59 - 4:02
unless your face is like right next to the hem of the dress
  • 4:02 - 4:04
It looks like fine from back here
  • 4:04 - 4:05
so I'm going to go wrap this up
  • 4:05 - 4:07
and I'm going to give it to my mum for Mother's Day
  • 4:08 - 4:10
So I've wrapped up the present...
  • 4:11 - 4:12
    in Christmas paper
  • 4:12 - 4:14
and now I'm giving it to my mum
  • 4:14 - 4:16
    Wooh!! *giggles*
  • 4:16 - 4:18
    Happy Mother's Day mum!
  • 4:19 - 4:22
Mum: Oh why thank you my darling daughter
  • 4:22 - 4:26
Oh Ella, why are you so excited all of a sudden?
  • 4:26 - 4:27
    whoa
  • 4:27 - 4:29
Ella! Why are you going crazy?
  • 4:31 - 4:32
    A: so excited mum
  • 4:32 - 4:33
    Mum: Oh!
  • 4:34 - 4:36
Did you take this out of my wardrobe?
  • 4:36 - 4:37
    A: *giggles* yes
  • 4:39 - 4:41
    Mum: Ohh wow!
  • 4:41 - 4:41
    That's excellent
  • 4:41 - 4:43
'cus it was a little bit short
  • 4:43 - 4:45
so can I try it on?
  • 4:45 - 4:45
    A: yeah
  • 4:45 - 4:46
    Mum: Okay
  • 4:46 - 4:47
    A: Yes
    Mum: I'll try it on
  • 4:47 - 4:48
    In fact, you have to
  • 4:48 - 4:50
    Mum: Okay
A: You have to try it on for the video
  • 4:50 - 4:53
Anyway, mum really liked the dress
  • 4:53 - 4:55
she just wasn't able to wear it as a dress before
  • 4:55 - 4:59
and as you can see, that extra length has really made a difference
  • 4:59 - 5:00
    Happy Mother's Day mum!
  • 5:00 - 5:03
I also hope that this video has been helpful
  • 5:03 - 5:06
