  • 0:13 - 0:17
How do you find the role of
    being a carer?
  • 0:19 - 0:22
Being a carer is very demanding
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    it's not something you
    chose to do
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    yourself as a career.
  • 0:27 - 0:28
You chose to be a parent.
  • 0:28 - 0:31
You chose to be a doctor
    or a lawyer but
  • 0:32 - 0:33
    you don't chose to
    be a carer.
  • 0:33 - 0:36
    You wouldn't want to
    chose that.
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    It can be rewarding.
  • 0:39 - 0:40
    It's very time consuming,
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    you have to make many
    changes in your own life.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
    Financial changes
    and career changes.
  • 0:45 - 0:48
You have to look at life
    in a different way.
  • 0:48 - 0:50
    There are many do's
    and don'ts that
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    you have as a carer.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
    You have to make the
    most of it.
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    It's your child and
    they need you more
  • 0:57 - 1:00
    than other children need
    their parents.
  • 1:00 - 1:03
You have to look at it
    in the best possible way
  • 1:03 - 1:07
    to just get your bearings
    with all the support that
  • 1:07 - 1:10
you can get and you feel
    that you want to have
  • 1:10 - 1:11
    around you.
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    Try to make the best
    out of the job.
  • 1:14 - 1:15
    You can have really
    good moments that
  • 1:15 - 1:18
    feel really rewarding by
    being a carer and
  • 1:18 - 1:22
    feeling that your child
is well and that you find
  • 1:23 - 1:26
    that you are providing
    good care and that they
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    are healthier than you
    expected and you are
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    finding your bearings.
  • 1:32 - 1:35
It is difficult, but it's also
    very rewarding.
  • 1:35 - 1:38
    That's the thing, it's not
    what you chose to do
  • 1:39 - 1:42
    but when you do it
    is incredibly rewarding
  • 1:42 - 1:45
    because you know you
    are actually helping your child.
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    We are helping Amelie.
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    We are making her comfortable
and we do things that make
  • 1:49 - 1:50
her smile and which she enjoys.
  • 1:51 - 1:53
That is the most important thing.
  • 1:53 - 1:55
As long as she is happy it
    makes us happy.
  • 1:57 - 2:00
    I just do it.
  • 2:01 - 2:05
    It feels right.
  • 2:05 - 2:08
    I can't explain.
  • 2:10 - 2:13
    You have no choice.
  • 2:16 - 2:18
For me it's just part of
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    being Isabella's mum.
  • 2:21 - 2:27
    I don't have any bad
    feelings about that at all.
  • 2:27 - 2:33
It is my job in life to give her
the best she could possibly have.
  • 2:33 - 2:37
There's lots of things that have
been put to one side but
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    it doesn't bother me in
    the slightest.
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    She is the most important
    person.
  • 2:43 - 2:47
    I think it's quite rewarding
    when Isabella gives something
  • 2:47 - 2:51
back to us, in terms of
    expressions in her face.
  • 2:51 - 2:54
That let's us know we are doing
    a good job for her.
  • 2:55 - 2:59
It's part and parcel of being
    her parents.
  • 3:02 - 3:04
    It can be quite stressful.
  • 3:04 - 3:07
    It can be quite tiring.
  • 3:07 - 3:10
    Emotionally tiring more
    than physically.
  • 3:13 - 3:16
You get so many mixed emotions
  • 3:17 - 3:19
    with this whole package.
  • 3:19 - 3:24
You feel anger. You feel why?
  • 3:24 - 3:27
    There are so many questions
    and answers that you are
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    rooting for all the time.
  • 3:29 - 3:32
    That's where the exhaustion
    comes from because
  • 3:32 - 3:34
    you wear yourself down.
  • 3:37 - 3:39
I found being a carer very tough.
  • 3:39 - 3:42
I was a first time mum to twins
  • 3:42 - 3:45
and then suddenly I'm a first time
mum to twins and one has
  • 3:45 - 3:48
    a life limiting condition.
  • 3:49 - 3:54
I grew into that role and although
    physically demanding the
  • 3:54 - 3:57
    hardest thing I will ever
    have to do, mentally, physically
  • 3:57 - 4:03
    and emotionally I actually
    loved caring for Ruby.
  • 4:03 - 4:05
That was my life. She was my life.
  • 4:05 - 4:08
I would have willing done that
    for 50 years.
  • 4:08 - 4:11
    I can't say it wasn't tough, because
    it was but it was
  • 4:11 - 4:15
    very fulfilling in many ways.
