January 18 - Adventists in the First Christian Nation

  • 0:07 - 0:11
    Many people believe Noah’s ark
settled on Mount Ararat after the flood,
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    in what is modern-day Turkey.
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    It’s a beautiful sight
    from almost any angle,
  • 0:16 - 0:18
but one of the best views of the mountain
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    can be seen from across
    the border in Armenia.
  • 0:21 - 0:26
Armenia was the first country to adopt
    Christianity as its official religion
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    in the year 301 A.D.
  • 0:28 - 0:31
    Although Christianity
spread here a long time ago,
  • 0:31 - 0:34
Adventists in the capital city of Yerevan
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    have been praying
    for opportunities to share
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    a unique message
with the people of this large city.
  • 0:40 - 0:45
Our main goal is to spread
    the three angels’ messages
  • 0:45 - 0:48
here in this area of Yerevan.
  • 0:49 - 0:53
To serve people through health ministry.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
    After working in this neighborhood
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    as a Global Mission pioneer
for two and a half years,
  • 0:58 - 1:01
    Vigen started
    this small group of believers.
  • 1:01 - 1:04
    This group is excited
    to share the Adventist message,
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    and found that health ministry
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    is the best way
    to connect with the community.
  • 1:09 - 1:10
    Over the last year,
  • 1:10 - 1:13
they put on small health expos,
    featuring lifestyle seminars,
  • 1:13 - 1:17
    like the “breathing free”
    program for people who smoke.
  • 1:17 - 1:21
Healthy cooking classes are a favorite
    among community members.
  • 1:21 - 1:25
    They love learning new recipes
and tasting the food in a social setting.
  • 1:26 - 1:28
    Some of the members started
    a colporteur ministry,
  • 1:28 - 1:30
    knocking on people’s doors.
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    As their group became
    more known in the neighborhood,
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    they decided to hold
    a series of Bible meetings
  • 1:35 - 1:37
    in their small rented space.
  • 1:37 - 1:40
    They mailed and passed out
    dozens of invitations
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    to these upcoming meetings;
  • 1:42 - 1:46
but just before the day of the event,
they were kicked out of the building.
  • 1:47 - 1:51
    It’s very difficult and expensive
to rent a space in this part of the city,
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    so the members did
the only thing they could at that point:
  • 1:54 - 1:56
    they prayed.
  • 1:56 - 1:59
And after a few days of prayers,
  • 1:59 - 2:04
we found a building on the same street,
    two homes after.
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    It was very near.
  • 2:06 - 2:11
For us it was a really
    unbelievable miracle that God did.
  • 2:12 - 2:16
Taking this as a sign from God,
the meetings went on as planned.
  • 2:16 - 2:19
    Karine received
    an invitation from a friend.
  • 2:19 - 2:22
She was willing to try anything
to fill a feeling of emptiness
  • 2:22 - 2:24
    she couldn’t explain.
  • 2:25 - 2:28
About 2 years ago I met Vigen.
  • 2:28 - 2:31
    When I heard him speaking
    it touched my heart.
  • 2:32 - 2:36
I began to understand the Bible
and that empty space was filled.
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    Karine was baptized
  • 2:39 - 2:42
and is now a very active member
    of the Adventist church.
  • 2:44 - 2:46
I became like a new person.
  • 2:47 - 2:49
I’m more faithful to God now.
  • 2:49 - 2:54
    Wherever I go I feel a peace
and comfort that wasn’t there before.
  • 2:56 - 2:59
    Mission work in cities
like Yerevan can be extremely difficult.
  • 3:00 - 3:03
    Church planting can seem
like an impossible task at times,
  • 3:03 - 3:07
but through prayer and God’s power,
new groups of believers can start.
  • 3:09 - 3:10
    Global Mission pioneers like Vigen
  • 3:10 - 3:14
    have found that by using
    Christ’s method of ministry,
  • 3:14 - 3:17
    they can break barriers
    that they couldn’t otherwise.
  • 3:17 - 3:24
To show people that we love them,
    we are interested in them,
  • 3:25 - 3:29
that we are prepared to help them,
  • 3:29 - 3:32
    to solve their everyday problems.
  • 3:34 - 3:39
I think the gospel is the answer
to the many problems of the people.
  • 3:40 - 3:42
Thank you for supporting Global Mission
  • 3:42 - 3:44
    through financial contribution and prayer.
  • 3:44 - 3:47
    Your support is helping
    pioneers plant new churches
  • 3:47 - 3:50
in unentered areas around the world.
  • 3:50 - 3:54
I would like to ask to pray that...
  • 3:54 - 4:00
people could know the living God
and that they could find rest
  • 4:00 - 4:04
    and peace in Christ alone.
