What to do when everything feels broken

  • Not Synced
    "I've got people in me."
  • Not Synced
So sang the late Abbey Lincoln.
  • Not Synced
I take that lyric as mantra.
  • Not Synced
    I've got people in me.
  • Not Synced
Jomama Jones is the person in me
I turn to as a guide.
  • Not Synced
    She's my alter ego.
  • Not Synced
    I've been embodying her
    in performance since 1995,
  • Not Synced
    and she comes around when
she has some insight to offer folks.
  • Not Synced
At this time of radical change
  • Not Synced
I'm glad to be the vessel
    for her message to you.
  • Not Synced
Jomama Jones: What if I told you
  • Not Synced
it's going to be alright ...
  • Not Synced
but what if I told you not yet?
  • Not Synced
What I told you there are trials ahead
  • Not Synced
    beyond your deepest fears?
  • Not Synced
What if I told you will you fall ...
  • Not Synced
    down, down down.
  • Not Synced
But what if I told you
    you will surprise yourself?
  • Not Synced
What I told you will be brave enough?
  • Not Synced
    What if I told you
  • Not Synced
we won't all make it through?
  • Not Synced
But what if I told you
  • Not Synced
that is as it must be?
  • Not Synced
What if I told you I've seen the future?
  • Not Synced
    Do you like my hands?
  • Not Synced
    They're expressive, yeah?
  • Not Synced
Now look at your hands --
  • Not Synced
    now go on.
  • Not Synced
There's so much history their touches,
  • Not Synced
    and marks of the future
    sketched on their palms.
  • Not Synced
    Sometimes hands grip tight,
  • Not Synced
    sometimes hands let go.
  • Not Synced
    What if I told you
  • Not Synced
it's all going to come undone?
  • Not Synced
    Hm.
  • Not Synced
    Ladies and gentlemen
  • Not Synced
    and otherwise described,
  • Not Synced
    I am Jomama Jones.
  • Not Synced
Some call me a soul-sonic superstar
  • Not Synced
    and I agree.
  • Not Synced
Even in my past I was from the future.
  • Not Synced
Let me take you back to girlhood.
  • Not Synced
    Picture this:
  • Not Synced
    it was Planting Day,
  • Not Synced
which was a holiday I invented
  • Not Synced
    for the Black youth
    community group I founded.
  • Not Synced
I dashed home to put on
    my gardening ensemble
  • Not Synced
when I caught my Uncle Freeman red-handed.
  • Not Synced
He was standing over my piggy bank
    with his hammer raised high.
  • Not Synced
He was fixing to steal my coins.
  • Not Synced
    And you see,
  • Not Synced
my Uncle Freeman was a handyman.
  • Not Synced
    He could fix anything --
  • Not Synced
    a broken chair,
  • Not Synced
    a shattered pot --
  • Not Synced
    even bring grandmother's
    plants back to life.
  • Not Synced
    He had that magic touch
    with broken things ...
  • Not Synced
    and broken people.
  • Not Synced
He would take me with him on his jobs
  • Not Synced
    and say, "C'mon Jo,
  • Not Synced
let's go do something to make
    this world a better place."
  • Not Synced
His hands were wide and calloused
  • Not Synced
    and they always reminded me
    of displaced tree roots.
  • Not Synced
As we worked he would talk with folks
  • Not Synced
about the change he was sure
    was just around the corner.
  • Not Synced
I saw him mend flagging hopes.
  • Not Synced
    He'd leave folks
    with their heads held high.
  • Not Synced
    His hands stirred the sunshine.
  • Not Synced
    And now he was about
    to break my piggy bank.
  • Not Synced
    I said "step back, man
  • Not Synced
    and show me your hands."
  • Not Synced
    You know the irony was
  • Not Synced
he used to give me all the old coins
    he'd find under the floorboards
  • Not Synced
    while working.
  • Not Synced
And I put them in the piggy bank
  • Not Synced
along with the money I earned
    through my childhood side hustles.
  • Not Synced
But by the spring of 1970,
  • Not Synced
Uncle Freeman had lost his touch,
  • Not Synced
along with most of his jobs.
  • Not Synced
He saw a heavy future of civil wrongs
and Black power outages in his palms.
  • Not Synced
    The last straw had come
    the previous winter
  • Not Synced
when they had gunned down Fred Hampton.
  • Not Synced
Overwhelmed with fear and rage and grief,
  • Not Synced
Uncle Freeman tried to gain his future.
  • Not Synced
    He gripped too tight,
  • Not Synced
and he started playing the numbers.
  • Not Synced
    "Well, one of these numbers
    is gonna hit, little girl.
  • Not Synced
You got a quarter for your Uncle Freeman?"
  • Not Synced
Now some of y'all have that relative.
  • Not Synced
And I knew right then and there
    I had to do something.
  • Not Synced
I jumped up and I grabbed that hammer
  • Not Synced
and I brought it crashing down
    on that piggy.
  • Not Synced
And Uncle Freeman started to weep
as I gathered up all the coins.
  • Not Synced
    "We're not buying another
    lottery ticket, Uncle Freeman."
  • Not Synced
    "C'mon."
  • Not Synced
    We spent every last cent
    at the seed store.
  • Not Synced
You know, the kids in my gardening group?
  • Not Synced
They didn't bat an eye when I had
    Uncle Freeman get down
  • Not Synced
and put his hands in the earth again
  • Not Synced
    and start breaking up
    that soil for our seeds.
  • Not Synced
And my little friend Tyisha even came over
and started slapping him on the back
  • Not Synced
saying, "Cry it out, Uncle Freeman.
  • Not Synced
    Cry it out."
  • Not Synced
"I can't fix this," he sobbed.
  • Not Synced
    It's an ancient-future truism, that.
  • Not Synced
He wasn't the first to feel that way
and we wouldn't be the last.
  • Not Synced
Right now it feels as though everything
    is breaking beyond repair.
  • Not Synced
    It is.
  • Not Synced
    But that breaking apart
    can be a breaking open,
  • Not Synced
    no matter how violent
  • Not Synced
    and uncertain
  • Not Synced
    and fearsome it seems.
  • Not Synced
    The thing is ...
  • Not Synced
    we can't do it alone.
  • Not Synced
Uncle Freeman cried so much that day
as we planted our seeds --
  • Not Synced
he was our very own irrigation system.
  • Not Synced
    "I don't know who I am
    anymore, little girl,"
  • Not Synced
he said to me at sundown.
  • Not Synced
    "Good, Uncle Freeman.
  • Not Synced
    Good.
  • Not Synced
    You're new again,
  • Not Synced
and that's just how we need you."
