ABILITY Magazine: Joe Mantegna

  • 0:14 - 0:20
The next prize is from Earnest Sports, a digital golf assistant.
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    If only it would help.
  • 0:24 - 0:26
Today we had a golf tournament
  • 0:26 - 0:28
...at North Ranch Country Club for ACT Today...
  • 0:28 - 0:31
...which is an organization that helps military families
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    ...with children with autism.
  • 0:33 - 0:36
I have a child with autism. It's devastating.
  • 0:36 - 0:38
It's like somebody shot a canon ball into your chest.
  • 0:38 - 0:40
Those are words you don't want to hear,
  • 0:40 - 0:41
whether it's autism, ...whether it's any sort of ailment.
  • 0:41 - 0:44
You have all these hopes and dreams for your kid and
  • 0:44 - 0:44
    all of a sudden
  • 0:44 - 0:46
all these hopes and dreams are somewhat dashed.
  • 0:46 - 0:48
If one choice is to surrender and say,
  • 0:48 - 0:52
"Wo is me. Now the glass is half empty."
  • 0:52 - 0:54
Or you gotta say, "Well, the glass is half full.
  • 0:54 - 0:58
How do we try to maybe fill it up a little more?"
  • 0:58 - 1:00
You try to accept things for what they are
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    and push on.
  • 1:02 - 1:03
One woman whom we met was a teacher -
  • 1:03 - 1:07
...who really helped change our older daughter's life.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
And the reason this teacher was able to do this is
  • 1:09 - 1:11
...because she had a sister with autism.
  • 1:11 - 1:13
We happened to be visiting this one school
  • 1:13 - 1:15
hoping to enroll her in a school
  • 1:15 - 1:16
...because I was going to be in this movie
  • 1:16 - 1:17
    for about 6 months.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
We're looking for a school to put my daughter in.
  • 1:19 - 1:21
Looking for a Special Education School.
  • 1:21 - 1:23
This is a regular public school.
  • 1:23 - 1:25
Basically it was the first time a teacher just said...
  • 1:25 - 1:28
when we first tried to include her in her regular classes...
  • 1:28 - 1:29
"Don't worry about it, I'm going to take this kid..."
  • 1:29 - 1:31
She took her right up in front of the class.
  • 1:31 - 1:33
Up until that time my daughter was in special education.
  • 1:33 - 1:36
And this teacher said, "Don't worry about it. I can handle this."
  • 1:36 - 1:38
And she takes my daughter in front of the class
  • 1:38 - 1:39
    and says,
  • 1:39 - 1:42
"Here's Mia. She has autism. She's going to be a little different than the rest of you kids.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
She's going to talk to herself.
  • 1:44 - 1:46
She may walk up to the blackboard and start drawing.
  • 1:46 - 1:47
    She may sing.
  • 1:47 - 1:47
We're all going to help her right?"
  • 1:47 - 1:49
And the kids, all these 6 year olds, are like,
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    "Yeah, Okay!"
  • 1:51 - 1:52
    And we're like...My wife and I are like..."Aa-ah-ah!"
  • 1:52 - 1:55
And she had a huge impact on our lives by doing that.
  • 1:56 - 1:58
Everybody has a story. That's ours.
