Life is easy. Why do we make it so hard? – Jon Jandai at TEDxDoiSuthep
-
0:06 - 0:10There is one phrase that
I have always wanted -
0:10 - 0:13to say to everyone in my life.
-
0:13 - 0:16That phrase is "Life is easy."
-
0:16 - 0:18It's so easy and fun.
-
0:19 - 0:24I never thought like that before.
-
0:24 - 0:31When I was in Bangkok, I felt like
life is very hard, very complicated. -
0:31 - 0:37I was born in a poor village
on the Northeastern of Thailand -
0:37 - 0:40And when I was a kid,
everything was fun and easy, -
0:40 - 0:44but when the TV came,
many people came to the village, -
0:44 - 0:45they said,
-
0:45 - 0:52"You are poor, you need to chase
success in your life. -
0:52 - 0:56You need to go to Bangkok
to pursue success in your life." -
1:00 - 1:02So I felt bad, I felt poor.
-
1:02 - 1:04So I needed to go to Bangkok.
-
1:04 - 1:08When I went to Bangkok,
it was not very fun. -
1:09 - 1:15You need to learn, study
a lot and work very hard, -
1:15 - 1:18and then you can get success.
-
1:18 - 1:23I worked very hard,
eight hours per day at least, -
1:23 - 1:28but all I could eat was just
a bowl of noodles per meal, -
1:29 - 1:33or some Tama dish
of fried rice or something like that. -
1:33 - 1:37And where I stayed was very bad,
a small room where a lot of people slept. -
1:37 - 1:39It was very hot.
-
1:39 - 1:42I started to question a lot.
-
1:42 - 1:48When I work hard, why is my life so hard?
-
1:49 - 1:50It must be something wrong,
-
1:50 - 1:56because I produce a lot of things,
but I cannot get enough. -
1:56 - 1:59And I tried to learn, I tried to study.
-
1:59 - 2:02I tried to study in the university.
-
2:04 - 2:08It's very hard to learn in university,
because it's very boring. -
2:08 - 2:10(Laughter)
-
2:10 - 2:13And when I looked at subjects
in the university, -
2:13 - 2:19in every faculty, most of them
had destructive knowledge. -
2:20 - 2:24There's no productive knowledge
in university for me. -
2:24 - 2:28If you learn to be
an architect or engineer, -
2:28 - 2:31that means you ruin more.
-
2:31 - 2:35The more these people work,
the mountain will be destroyed more. -
2:35 - 2:38And a good land in Chao Praya Basin
-
2:38 - 2:41will be covered
with concrete more and more. -
2:41 - 2:43We destroy more.
-
2:43 - 2:46If we go to agriculture faculty
or something like that, -
2:46 - 2:50that means we learn how to poison,
-
2:50 - 2:52to poison the land, the water,
-
2:52 - 2:54and learn to destroy everything.
-
2:54 - 2:58I feel like everything we do
is so complicated, so hard. -
2:58 - 3:02We just make everything hard.
-
3:02 - 3:07Life was so hard
and I felt disappointed. -
3:07 - 3:12I started to think about,
why did I have to be in Bangkok? -
3:12 - 3:14I thought about when I was a kid,
-
3:14 - 3:16nobody worked eight hours per day,
-
3:16 - 3:20everybody worked two hours,
two months a year, -
3:20 - 3:25planting rice one month
and harvesting the rice another month. -
3:25 - 3:28The rest is free time,
ten months of free time. -
3:28 - 3:30That's why people have
so many festivals in Thailand, -
3:30 - 3:32every month they have festival.
-
3:32 - 3:33(Laughter)
-
3:33 - 3:36Because they have so much free time.
-
3:36 - 3:40And then in the daytime,
everyone even takes a nap. -
3:40 - 3:44Even now in Laos, go to Laos if you can,
-
3:44 - 3:46people take a nap after lunch.
-
3:46 - 3:48And after they wake up, they just gossip,
-
3:48 - 3:53how's your son-in-law,
how's your wife, daughter-in-law. -
3:53 - 3:56People have a lot of time,
-
3:56 - 3:59but because they have a lot of time,
-
3:59 - 4:02they have time to be with themselves.
-
4:02 - 4:04And when they have time
to be with themselves, -
4:04 - 4:07they have time to understand themselves.
-
4:07 - 4:09When they understand themselves,
-
4:09 - 4:12they can see what they want in their life.
-
4:12 - 4:15So, many people see
that they want happiness, -
4:15 - 4:19they want love,
they want to enjoy their life. -
4:19 - 4:22So, people see
a lot of beauty in their life, -
4:22 - 4:25so they express that beauty in many ways.
-
4:25 - 4:29Some people by carving
the handle of their knife, -
4:29 - 4:30very beautiful,
-
4:30 - 4:33they weave the baskets very nicely.
-
4:33 - 4:35But, now, nobody does that.
-
4:35 - 4:38Nobody can do something like that.
-
4:38 - 4:40People use plastic everywhere.
-
4:40 - 4:43So, I feel like
it's something wrong in there, -
4:43 - 4:45I cannot live this way I'm living.
-
4:45 - 4:48So, I decided to quit University,
-
4:48 - 4:51and went back home.
-
4:51 - 4:57When I went back home,
I started to live like I remember, -
4:57 - 4:58like when I was a kid.
-
4:58 - 5:01I started to work two months a year.
-
5:01 - 5:04I got four tons of rice.
-
5:04 - 5:06And the whole family, six people,
-
5:06 - 5:09we eat less than half a ton per year.
-
5:09 - 5:11So we can sell some rice.
-
5:11 - 5:15I took two ponds, two fish ponds.
-
5:15 - 5:17We have fish to eat all year round.
-
5:17 - 5:20And I started a small garden.
-
5:20 - 5:25Less than half an acre.
-
5:25 - 5:31And I spend 15 minutes per day
to take care of the garden. -
5:31 - 5:36I have more than 30 varieties
of vegetables in the garden. -
5:36 - 5:39So, six people cannot eat all of it.
-
5:39 - 5:42We have a surplus to sell in the market.
-
5:42 - 5:46We can make some income, too.
-
5:46 - 5:50So, I feel like, it's easy,
why did I have to be in Bangkok -
5:50 - 5:54for seven years, working hard
and then not have enough to eat, -
5:54 - 5:58but here, only two months a year
and 15 minutes per day -
5:58 - 6:01I can feed six people.
-
6:01 - 6:03That's easy.
-
6:03 - 6:09And before I thought
that stupid people like me -
6:09 - 6:13who never got a good grade at school,
-
6:13 - 6:14cannot have a house.
-
6:14 - 6:17Because people who are cleverer than me,
-
6:17 - 6:19who are number one
in the class every year, -
6:19 - 6:22they get a good job,
-
6:22 - 6:26but they need to work more
than 30 years to have a house. -
6:26 - 6:30But me, who cannot finish university,
how could I have a house? -
6:30 - 6:34Hopeless for people
who have low education, like me. -
6:34 - 6:37But, then I started to do
earthly building, it's so easy. -
6:37 - 6:40I spend two hours per day,
from 5 o'clock in the morning, -
6:40 - 6:45until 7 o'clock in the morning,
two hours per day. -
6:45 - 6:47And in three months, I got a house.
-
6:47 - 6:50And another friend
who's the most clever in the class, -
6:50 - 6:55he spent three months
to build his house, too. -
6:55 - 7:00But, he had to be in debt.
He had to pay for his debt for 30 years. -
7:00 - 7:06So, compared to him, I have
29 years and 10 months of free time. -
7:06 - 7:09(Laughter)
-
7:09 - 7:12So, I feel that life is so easy.
-
7:13 - 7:16I never thought I could
build a house as easy as that. -
7:16 - 7:20And I keep building a house every year,
at least one house every year. -
7:20 - 7:24Now, I have no money,
but I have many houses. -
7:24 - 7:26(Laughter)
-
7:26 - 7:29My problem is in which house
I will sleep tonight. -
7:29 - 7:31(Laughter)
-
7:32 - 7:35So, a house is not a problem,
anybody can build a house. -
7:35 - 7:37The kids, 13 years old, at the school,
-
7:37 - 7:40they make bricks together,
they make a house. -
7:40 - 7:42After one month, they have a library.
-
7:42 - 7:44The kids can make a house,
-
7:44 - 7:47a very old nun can build
a hut for herself. -
7:47 - 7:49Many people can build a house.
-
7:49 - 7:51So, it's easy.
-
7:51 - 7:54If you don't believe me, try it.
-
7:54 - 7:56If somebody wants to have a house.
-
7:56 - 7:59And then, the next thing is clothing.
-
8:01 - 8:05I felt like I'm poor,
like I'm not handsome. -
8:05 - 8:09I tried to dress like somebody else,
like a movie star. -
8:09 - 8:12To make myself look good, look better.
-
8:12 - 8:16I spent one month to save money
to buy a pair of jeans. -
8:16 - 8:18When I wore them,
I turned left, I turned right, -
8:18 - 8:20looked in the mirror.
-
8:20 - 8:23Every time I look, I am the same person.
-
8:23 - 8:27The most expensive pants
cannot change my life. -
8:27 - 8:31I felt like I'm so crazy,
why did I have to buy them? -
8:31 - 8:34Spend one month to have a pair of pants.
-
8:34 - 8:35It doesn't change me.
-
8:35 - 8:38I started to think more about that.
-
8:38 - 8:40Why do we need to follow fashion?
-
8:40 - 8:42Because, when we follow fashion,
we never catch up with it, -
8:42 - 8:44because we follow it.
-
8:44 - 8:46So, don't follow it, just stay here.
-
8:46 - 8:47(Laughter)
-
8:47 - 8:49Use what you have.
-
8:49 - 8:53So, after that, until now, 20 years,
I have never bought any clothes. -
8:53 - 8:56All the clothes I have
are leftovers from people. -
8:56 - 8:59When people come to visit me,
and when they leave, -
8:59 - 9:01they leave a lot of clothes there.
-
9:01 - 9:03So, I have tons of clothes now.
-
9:03 - 9:04(Laughter)
-
9:04 - 9:07And when people see me
wear very old clothes, -
9:07 - 9:09they give me more clothes.
-
9:09 - 9:11(Laughter)
-
9:11 - 9:14So, my problem is, I need
to give clothes to people very often. -
9:14 - 9:16(Laughter)
-
9:16 - 9:18So, it's so easy.
-
9:18 - 9:23And when I stopped buying clothes,
I felt like, it's not only clothes, -
9:23 - 9:25it's about something else in my life,
-
9:25 - 9:29What I learned is that
when I buy something, -
9:29 - 9:32and I think about,
I buy it because I like it, -
9:32 - 9:35or I buy it because I need it.
-
9:35 - 9:40So, if I buy it because I like it,
that means I'm wrong. -
9:40 - 9:44So, I feel more free
when I think like this. -
9:44 - 9:48And the last thing is,
when I get sick, what will I do? -
9:48 - 9:51I really worried in the beginning,
because then I had no money. -
9:51 - 9:56But, I started to contemplate more.
-
9:56 - 10:00Normally, sickness is a normal thing,
it's not a bad thing. -
10:00 - 10:04Sickness is something to remind us
that we did something wrong in our lives, -
10:04 - 10:06that's why we got sick.
-
10:06 - 10:09So, when I get sick, I need
to stop and come back to myself. -
10:09 - 10:12And think about it, what I did was wrong.
-
10:12 - 10:15So, I learned how to use
water to heal myself, -
10:15 - 10:17how to use earth to heal myself,
-
10:17 - 10:23I learned how to use
basic knowledge to heal myself. -
10:23 - 10:25So, now that I rely on myself
in these four things, -
10:25 - 10:27I feel like life is very easy,
-
10:28 - 10:33I feel something
like freedom, I feel free. -
10:33 - 10:35I feel like I don't worry
about anything much, -
10:35 - 10:40I have less fear, I can do
whatever I want in my life. -
10:40 - 10:43Before, I had a lot of fear,
I could not do anything. -
10:43 - 10:47But, now I feel very free,
like I'm a unique person on this Earth, -
10:47 - 10:51nobody like me, I don't need
to make myself like anybody else. -
10:51 - 10:53I'm the number one.
-
10:53 - 10:56So, things like this
make it easy, very light. -
10:56 - 11:02And, after that,
I started to think about -
11:02 - 11:07that when I was in Bangkok,
I felt very dark in my life. -
11:07 - 11:11I started to think that many people
maybe thought like me at the time. -
11:11 - 11:15So, we started a place called
"Pun Pun" in Chiang Mai. -
11:15 - 11:19The main aim is just saving seed.
-
11:19 - 11:23To collect seed,
because seed is food, food is life. -
11:23 - 11:25If there is no seed, no life.
-
11:25 - 11:27No seed, no freedom.
-
11:27 - 11:29No seed, no happiness.
-
11:29 - 11:31Because your life
depends on somebody else. -
11:31 - 11:33Because you have no food.
-
11:33 - 11:36So, it's very important to save seed.
-
11:36 - 11:38That's why we focus on saving seed.
-
11:38 - 11:40That's the main thing in Pun Pun.
-
11:40 - 11:44And the second thing
is it is the learning center. -
11:44 - 11:48We want to have a center
for ourselves to learn, -
11:48 - 11:50learn how to make life easy.
-
11:50 - 11:54Because we were taught to make
life complicated and hard all the time. -
11:54 - 11:59How can we make it easy? It's easy,
-
11:59 - 12:03but we don't know
how to make it easy anymore. -
12:03 - 12:05Because we always make it complicated
-
12:05 - 12:09and now, we start to learn,
and learn to be together. -
12:09 - 12:13Because, we were taught
to disconnect ourselves -
12:13 - 12:15from everything else, to be independent,
-
12:15 - 12:17so we can rely on the money only.
-
12:17 - 12:19We don't need to rely on each other.
-
12:19 - 12:21But now, to be happy,
we need to come back, -
12:21 - 12:25to connect to ourselves again,
to connect to other people, -
12:25 - 12:28to connect our mind and body
together again. -
12:28 - 12:32So, we can be happy. Life is easy.
-
12:32 - 12:35And from beginning until now,
what I learned -
12:35 - 12:40is the four basic needs:
food, house, clothes and medicine -
12:40 - 12:42must be cheap and easy for everybody,
-
12:42 - 12:44that's the civilization.
-
12:44 - 12:49But, if you make these four things hard
and very hard for many people to get, -
12:49 - 12:52that's uncivilized.
-
12:52 - 12:56So, now when we look
at everywhere around us, -
12:56 - 12:59everything is so hard to get.
-
12:59 - 13:05I feel like now is the most
uncivilized era of humans on this Earth. -
13:05 - 13:09We have so many people
who finish university, -
13:09 - 13:12have so many universities on the Earth,
-
13:12 - 13:15have so many clever people on this Earth.
-
13:15 - 13:18But, life is harder and harder.
-
13:20 - 13:21We make it hard for whom?
-
13:22 - 13:24We work hard for whom right now?
-
13:26 - 13:29I feel like it's wrong, it's not normal.
-
13:29 - 13:32So, I just want to come back to normal.
-
13:32 - 13:36To be a normal person,
to be equal to animals. -
13:36 - 13:40The birds make a nest in one or two days.
-
13:40 - 13:43The rats dig a hole in one night.
-
13:44 - 13:46But, the clever humans like us
-
13:46 - 13:48spend 30 years to have a house,
-
13:48 - 13:54and many people can't believe
that they can have a house in this life. -
13:55 - 13:56So, that's wrong.
-
13:56 - 14:02Why do we destroy our spirit,
why do we destroy our ability that much? -
14:04 - 14:10So, I feel that it's enough for me,
to live in the normal way, -
14:10 - 14:12in the abnormal way.
-
14:12 - 14:14So, now I try to be normal.
-
14:14 - 14:16But, people look at me
as the abnormal one. -
14:16 - 14:18(Laughter)
-
14:18 - 14:19A crazy person.
-
14:19 - 14:24But, I don't care,
because it's not my fault. -
14:24 - 14:27It's their fault, they think like that.
-
14:28 - 14:32So, my life is easy and light now.
-
14:32 - 14:34That's enough for me.
-
14:34 - 14:36People can think whatever they want.
-
14:36 - 14:39I cannot manage anything outside myself.
-
14:39 - 14:43What I can do is change my mind,
manage my mind. -
14:43 - 14:47Now, my mind is light
and easy, that's enough. -
14:47 - 14:52If anybody wants to have a choice,
you can have a choice. -
14:52 - 14:55The choice to be easy or to be hard,
it depends on you. -
14:55 - 14:56Thank you.
-
14:56 - 14:59(Applause)

Great job on the subtitles! There were almost no technical mistakes (reading speed, subtitle length), plus you did a lot of work compensating for the speaker's difficulties with English.
Detailed comments on my edits follow below:
You don't need to break lines in subtitles shorter than 42 characters.
You don't need to use brackets for obvious grammatical corrections. Only use brackets when after your change the subtitle could potentially mean something different from what is being said. Because the speaker was struggling so much with English here, I just removed all the brackets. If you feel there is a specific area where your change really must be indicated with brackets, please let me know and we can add it in a post-edit.
I changed the punctuation to follow the American model, since you used double quotes. See http://translations.ted.org/wiki/English_Style_Guide#Punctuation
I rebroke some lines. Don't leave prepositions (like in, of, at) at the end of the line. Learn more at http://translations.ted.org/wiki/How_to_break_lines
I merged subtitles where they could work as a single two-line subtitle that forms a bigger part of a sentence and so, is easier to translate into other languages than subtitles containing disjointed sections of the whole sentence. (English subtitles and transcripts are often used as the source language in translation). To learn more, see http://translations.ted.org/wiki/English_Style_Guide#How_to_make_your_subtitles_a_good_source_for_translations
I recommend installing a spellchecker in your browser.
If the speaker makes a long pause, try not to have the subtitle continue through that pause (don't have the subtitle continue over a second after the equivalent sentence is spoken).
It's good to make (Laughter) a separate subtitle, if possible.
