THE SESSIONS: Interviews with WH Macy and Dr. Cheryl Cohen Greene

  • 0:15 - 0:16
It's about this guy Mark O'Brien
  • 0:16 - 0:18
who wanted to, he grew up in an Iron Lung
  • 0:18 - 0:20
he was paralyzed from the neck down,
  • 0:20 - 0:21
he wanted to know what a woman was.
  • 0:21 - 0:22
He wanted to know what intimacy...
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    what sex was all about.
  • 0:24 - 0:25
    So, he hired a surrogate.
  • 0:25 - 0:26
So, I think we could say
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    ...has some intimacy.
  • 0:28 - 0:29
    Yeah, his therapist called me
  • 0:29 - 0:31
...and similar to what happened in the movie,
  • 0:31 - 0:33
and told me what his desire was.
  • 0:33 - 0:35
And that was to not to be a virgin.
  • 0:36 - 0:37
    These guys...
  • 0:37 - 0:38
I don't know how they did it.
  • 0:38 - 0:41
I've never seen someone so un-self-conscious
  • 0:41 - 0:44
about being buck naked in front of the camera.
  • 0:44 - 0:45
    I've been there.
  • 0:45 - 0:45
    I've done it.
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    It's not easy to do.
  • 0:47 - 0:48
We always work as a team.
  • 0:48 - 0:51
I call the therapist after every session.
  • 0:51 - 0:53
The client knows that I'm sharing
  • 0:53 - 0:55
what he says and what we do
  • 0:55 - 0:57
so we can make the whole process for him
  • 0:57 - 1:00
    as beneficial as possible.
  • 1:00 - 1:02
Because things do come up when you're working with
  • 1:02 - 1:03
    a client.
  • 1:03 - 1:07
Not just his erection, hopefully that happens, but
  • 1:07 - 1:11
you know, over time, but it involves a lot of emotional
  • 1:11 - 1:12
    feeling.
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    It's not mechanical.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
I have to feel something for a client.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
I have to like the person.
  • 1:19 - 1:22
I feel that most of my clients come to me
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    and they're very brave.
  • 1:24 - 1:25
When I spoke to him on the phone,
  • 1:25 - 1:28
he told me he felt like he was on the outside
  • 1:28 - 1:31
of a restaurant looking in through a big window
  • 1:31 - 1:33
and everybody on the other side sitting and enjoying
  • 1:33 - 1:36
a fabulous feast that he would never be able to
  • 1:36 - 1:37
    partake in.
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    And I thought to myself,
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    ...and I said to him...
  • 1:41 - 1:43
You deserve a seat at that table.
  • 1:43 - 1:44
    The surrogate Helen Hunt
  • 1:44 - 1:47
    was asking her... Mark O'Brien,
  • 1:47 - 1:49
while she was playing Cheryl Cohen Greene
  • 1:49 - 1:49
    at the time
  • 1:49 - 1:52
    how he felt
  • 1:52 - 1:55
cause he had said to me in real life
  • 1:55 - 1:56
he felt guilty for a lot of things
  • 1:56 - 1:59
and one of them was that he
  • 1:59 - 2:00
    had sexual thoughts.
  • 2:00 - 2:01
I mean he was only 6 years old.
  • 2:01 - 2:03
He felt that somehow God had
  • 2:03 - 2:04
    punished him.
  • 2:04 - 2:05
And one of the reasons that he was punished
  • 2:05 - 2:06
    is because he masturbated
  • 2:06 - 2:10
or he tried to masturbate when he was a child.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    Or a young adult.
  • 2:12 - 2:15
He explored himself in the Iron Lung.
  • 2:15 - 2:18
He thought he could reach his penis, and he couldn't.
  • 2:18 - 2:19
    But he had sexual thoughts.
  • 2:19 - 2:22
He was not able to masturbate.
  • 2:22 - 2:23
    But he had sexual thoughts.
  • 2:23 - 2:26
He also had a sister who died when she was
  • 2:26 - 2:29
    I think 10, 8, or 9, or 10... I'm not...
  • 2:29 - 2:31
I don't remember clearly, but she died
  • 2:31 - 2:34
because his parents were paying so much attention
  • 2:34 - 2:35
    to him and his needs.
  • 2:35 - 2:37
And he felt very guilty about that.
  • 2:37 - 2:40
So, there was the question of whether, you know...
  • 2:40 - 2:42
he thought that God was punishing him
  • 2:42 - 2:45
    for... something.
  • 2:46 - 2:47
And that was what she was addressing.
  • 2:47 - 2:52
People knew from his writings how he had felt.
  • 2:52 - 2:57
So, Ben incorporated it into the screenplay...the script.
  • 2:57 - 2:59
When I'm with clients, I ask them questions.
  • 2:59 - 3:01
    I listen a lot.
  • 3:01 - 3:02
    Most of it is listening.
  • 3:02 - 3:05
and when they mention things that I think
  • 3:05 - 3:08
well, I mention... I tell the therapist everything
  • 3:08 - 3:09
    after each session.
  • 3:09 - 3:12
So, we can see what, where we need to,... they
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    the therapist and the client
  • 3:14 - 3:16
need to go to work on some issues.
  • 3:16 - 3:19
Most of the time, the therapist has
  • 3:19 - 3:21
worked on a lot of things with the client
  • 3:21 - 3:22
    before they're referred to me
  • 3:22 - 3:25
but it's always, you know, you make that kind of connection
  • 3:25 - 3:27
with a person, being intimate with them.
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    More things will come up.
