where I reviewed a plugin,

and people seem to think that was pretty cool

so Matt asked me to do it again.

So we're gonna do Contact Form 7.

Just to kind of get a gauge,

how many people here

have a developed plugins themselves?

I'm gonna try to go very fast

through the feedback

that I gave the developer

of Contact Form 7,

and kind of what he decided

about each of the bits of feedback

that I gave him,

and then try to leave

more time for questions

because I think that's

usually more interesting

otherwise you might as well

just watch video online, right?

So!

Takayuki is the developer

of Contact Form 7,

and he graciously agreed to this experiment

just no one thinks

I'm slagging on a developer

with his knowledge.

The first thing I noticed

when I installed Contact Form 7

(which I hadn't used for several years)

was that the menu placement

drove me crazy.

Because I don't know how many of you

realize this, but the nav is

sort is broken into content at the top

and sort of utilities on the bottom.

and he could have chosen

to put the contact form stuff

like right under comments.

So that was my first piece of feedback.

But as it turned out,

it wasn't his fault,

it was a plugin conflict,

which was great

because one of the reasons

that we asked plugin developers

to have a consistent UI

with WordPress core

is that people

who use WordPress with plugins,

if something goes wrong

they don't know what went wrong.

They just know it's broken.

And so, if someone does

a plugin that's broken

people think WordPress is broken.

So it was kind of funny

that the shoe

was on the other foot this time

and I found the conflict and it went away

so he didn't actually

anything wrong there.

if I hadn't had this other plugin installed

it would have been right under comments.

So, good job!

That said,

He is using this default gear icon,

which is an icon

we make available

for any plugin that's

gonna create a menu item,

just they have one

But you should really choose

the icon make sense

if you gonna have

a top level menu item.

so I said,

"Why don't you change that

to something, you know,

from the dashicon set

which are the icons that we use

for the other navigation items?"

He did not realize

that we had some

that kind of look like forms

and are even labeled

as being for forms.

So he said, "Yes! I will do that.

Find me one."

So, that's good.

Next I said,

I don't like it

that you have all these custom links

like, "Docs", and, "FAQ" and "Support",

and no help tab,

because everywhere else in WordPress

there's a help tab in the upper right

where if you don't really know

what's going on on the screen

you click it, it comes down

and it tells you what to do.

So I said "Please add one of those,"

and he said "Yes!"

So that was good!

These are pretty easy changes so far

but a good confidence booster for me.

The title field.

This was weird; I didn't actually know

what was going on

when I saw this.

Where it says, " Untitled,"

that is the "title" of the form.

If you hover over it, it turns yellow,

and then if you click in it,

then it shows you the actual editable fields.

but that's all it is, it's a title field.

So I said why don't you

just do it like core,

where it's just a field

and you know it's a field

and you can click in it.

He said [audio track jumps ahead]

So, compare core to this 3 step process.

And he said, "Yes!"

That was good.

"Generate tag."

This is in quotes

because it is specific label

that he is using on the form builder.

which is a little small on the screen

but basically this is how you add

form fields to the form.

I said, "Tag means something different

to users than developers.

To users, It means this kind of tag.

To developers, It means this kind of tag.

You are developer, so I get why you call it a tag,

but most people who are using forms

aren't going to think of that

so why don't you call it create new field,

and use simpler language.

But he said, [sotto voice] "No."

[audience laughs]

He didn't want to do that.

He said 'No' because he thought

it would confuse the people

who have already been using it.

We may have another conversation

about that, we'll see.

There is a section on the plugin

called messages.

These are the confirmations

and error reports that

happen when you submit the form.

There's a whole screen of them,

and they all start

with the little hash mark

And I said, "That means 'hashtag,'

why is that there?

I'm sure it's because you're a developer

and you start comment lines with that,

but it doesn't make sense

for regular people."

He said, "Yes!"

Yay!

This is a broader view of the message thing

as you can see,

It's kind of cut off.

That's because that is a scrolling box

but in browsers today,

you don't actually see the scroll bar

until you actually go to use it,

so it just looks like it's broken.

And again, if it looks broken,

people think WordPress is broken.

so I said ---

Actually, I'm sorry, I did these backwards.

This is: I thought people might not know what is going on,

so I said, introduce It

with telling them what

these messages are for.

He said, "Yes."

Also, you'd have to scroll

all the way back up to save it,

and I thought people would probably forget

so I said, put a save button at the bottom

and he said, "Yes."

And then I said,

"Also, this scrolling

is a pain in the butt,

why don't you just have the boxes

not that long.

He said, "Maybe."

He actually felt that it was too long,

he used to have it that way

where all of them were displayed

and he put the scroll in 'cause he thought

it made the page feel better.

But since the entire screen is

like three screens-worth long,

It's just not... it doesn't save anything.

so, but he said maybe, we'll talk about it.

Then there's this box

called Additional Settings.

I don't know what that is

if I'm a new user.

Maybe I use it to make all my forms blue

and make the box outlines in a different color.

It doesn't have any instructions,

or any reference to what that means,

and Settings is a word

that is used elsewhere in the UI

so I said, "Why don't you

just put a little intro line?"

He said, "Yes."

Yaay!

the section on mail --

so this would be the notifications,

so anyone who has contact forms,

you know, you get the little email

that says, "You got a message!"

Name, e-mail, message,

all your fields.

so it has a lot of stuff

that's pretty typical

but I did not understand

why there was Mail

and Mail (2) in parentheses.

It didn't make sense to me,

especially since it only had one check box.

so I said, "Well, can't you just combine

that into Mail and don't have a Mail (2)?"

He said, "I agree that it is confusing,

but I do not how to make that better.

I thought the way was put it all in one box,

But he said, if someone can help me

figure out a way to make that better,

we can talk about it."

So we'll see.

But speaking of mail,

there is a thing in the form builder

that says, "And any put this caught into mail fields below.

or which one? there is so many.

I could you know.

again, here agree this probably,

confusiong, but he didn't really know the best way to address it.

so talk about more.

a Japanese being a language that is different from English,

sometimes have different UI issues.
