Where does all the carbon we release go?

  • 0:02 - 0:04
    Where does all the carbon
    we release go?
  • 0:04 - 0:08
Carbon works in a natural cycle,
    present in all living things:
  • 0:08 - 0:11
in the soil, in the oceans,
    in the atmosphere
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    and in rocks deep underground.
  • 0:13 - 0:16
When plants and other living things die,
  • 0:16 - 0:19
    much of their stored carbon
makes its way back to the atmosphere
  • 0:19 - 0:22
    until new plants grow
    and reabsorb the carbon.
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    But over millions of years,
  • 0:25 - 0:29
some of the carbon stored in ancient trees
    and sea life becomes rock
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    and some becomes fossil fuels:
  • 0:31 - 0:34
    coal, oil and natural gas.
  • 0:34 - 0:37
    Natural events like volcanic eruptions
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    release some of the carbon
    trapped in rock.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
    And human activities,
    like burning fossil fuels,
  • 0:42 - 0:46
    also release some
    of that prehistoric carbon.
  • 0:46 - 0:50
    Today, humans release
    around 60 times more carbon
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    than all the volcanoes
    on the planet each year.
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    That overloads Earth's carbon cycle
  • 0:55 - 0:56
and builds up in the atmosphere
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    and oceans.
  • 0:58 - 1:02
    Planting more trees will help,
but trees alone can't get us to net zero.
  • 1:02 - 1:05
    There's only one sure way
    to stop global warming.
  • 1:06 - 1:10
    We must stop releasing
this excess carbon into our air.
