    to come and speak judgment
  • 12:48 - 12:51
    against this kind of behavior.
  • 12:51 - 12:54
And so, throughout the book of Isaiah,
  • 12:54 - 12:56
    we find various oracles
  • 12:56 - 13:00
    of judgment and salvation,
  • 13:00 - 13:04
messages of judgment given to us from God.
  • 13:04 - 13:08
    And some judgments are directed
  • 13:08 - 13:10
    toward God's people, okay?
  • 13:10 - 13:12
    Other judgments are directed
  • 13:12 - 13:16
    toward other nations as well.
  • 13:16 - 13:20
And one in particular is Babylon.
  • 13:20 - 13:24
Babylon received a judgment from God.
  • 13:24 - 13:25
And I want to take us
  • 13:25 - 13:27
to our first passage here today
  • 13:27 - 13:28
by going to the book of Isaiah,
  • 13:28 - 13:33
    chapter 13, Isaiah, chapter 13.
  • 13:33 - 13:35
And I'm going to ask Jason
  • 13:35 - 13:37
to read to us chapter 13, verse 1,
  • 13:37 - 13:39
    and then let's jump over
  • 13:39 - 13:44
to verses 17 to 22, Isaiah, chapter 13,
  • 13:44 - 13:48
    verses 1 and 17 to 22.
  • 13:48 - 13:49
    (Jason) Alright, and I have
  • 13:49 - 13:51
the New King James Version here.
  • 13:51 - 13:55
It says, Isaiah, chapter 13, verse 1:
  • 14:01 - 14:06
    Now, verses 17 through 22, verse 17:
  • 15:16 - 15:18
    (Christian) Thank you, Jason.
  • 15:18 - 15:19
    Wow, what a strong judgment
  • 15:19 - 15:21
    against the nation of Babylon.
  • 15:21 - 15:23
But, what I find very interesting
  • 15:23 - 15:29
is that, during Isaiah's day, Babylon
  • 15:29 - 15:31
was really no threat to Judah.
  • 15:31 - 15:33
    In fact, during Isaiah's time,
  • 15:33 - 15:38
there is little mention of Babylon, okay?
  • 15:38 - 15:41
But, we come to this passage early on
  • 15:41 - 15:43
    in the book of Isaiah,
  • 15:43 - 15:48
and Isaiah's prophecy here against Babylon
  • 15:48 - 15:50
    is actually a judgment
  • 15:50 - 15:55
that would be fulfilled 200 years,
  • 15:55 - 15:59
    approximately, 200 years later.
  • 15:59 - 16:03
    When I think about that,
  • 16:03 - 16:06
    I can't help but wonder
  • 16:06 - 16:09
how is it possible, I mean, really,
  • 16:09 - 16:14
for Isaiah to make this prophecy
  • 16:14 - 16:18
    long before Babylon became
    a super power
  • 16:18 - 16:21
    and before they took
  • 16:21 - 16:23
the people of Judah into captivity?
  • 16:23 - 16:27
    How is it that Isaiah
  • 16:27 - 16:33
    could declare these things? Stephanie?
  • 16:33 - 16:34
    (Stephanie) He was anointed.
  • 16:34 - 16:37
The Holy Spirit was leading him,
  • 16:37 - 16:40
    and God was guiding him
  • 16:40 - 16:42
as he was writing these things down.
  • 16:42 - 16:44
And it makes me think of a verse
  • 16:44 - 16:48
in Isaiah 46, actually two verses,
  • 16:48 - 16:51
verses 9 and 10; can I read that?
  • 16:51 - 16:52
    (Christian) Please read...
  • 16:52 - 16:54
    (Stephanie) Would that be okay?
  • 16:54 - 16:55
    (Christian) Isaiah, chapter 46?
  • 16:55 - 17:00
(Stephanie) And verses 9 and 10, yes.
    I'll be reading
  • 17:00 - 17:02
    from the King James Version:
  • 17:23 - 17:27
And I think a friend of mine often says,
  • 17:27 - 17:30
    "Just let God be God."
  • 17:30 - 17:33
And that's truly...That's who He is.
  • 17:33 - 17:34
    He's God; He knows
  • 17:34 - 17:36
    the end from the beginning,
  • 17:36 - 17:37
    and He was leading.
  • 17:37 - 17:38
    (Christian) He knows the end
  • 17:38 - 17:39
    from the beginning, yes.
  • 17:39 - 17:42
(Derek) I think we have two choices,
    like Stephanie said.
  • 17:42 - 17:44
    The liberal scholars will say,
  • 17:44 - 17:47
"Well, this this must have been written
    after it happened
  • 17:47 - 17:50
    and supposedly predicting it."
  • 17:50 - 17:52
For example, the prophecy of Jesus
  • 17:52 - 17:54
    about the fall of Jerusalem,
  • 17:54 - 17:55
they say, "Well, Matthew must actually
  • 17:55 - 17:58
have been written after 70 A.D.
  • 17:58 - 18:00
    because how would they know
  • 18:00 - 18:03
what was going to happen 40 years,
  • 18:03 - 18:04
    almost 40 years later?"
  • 18:04 - 18:06
So, we have a choice to make.
  • 18:06 - 18:07
Either they're all lying to us,
  • 18:07 - 18:09
    and it's all fabricated,
  • 18:09 - 18:13
or there is a God in Heaven
    who can reveal
  • 18:13 - 18:16
things that have not yet happened,
    with prophets.
  • 18:16 - 18:17
    I think that's a key issue
  • 18:17 - 18:18
    in the book of Isaiah.
  • 18:18 - 18:21
    (Christian) Absolutely,
    and not just Isaiah,
  • 18:21 - 18:25
but other prophets of God spoke of God
  • 18:25 - 18:27
    being the one true God.
  • 18:27 - 18:29
And what made Him so distinct?
  • 18:29 - 18:31
That He knew the end from the beginning.
  • 18:31 - 18:33
Is there another verse that comes to mind
  • 18:33 - 18:36
    where another prophet affirms
  • 18:36 - 18:39
    what Isaiah has done?
  • 18:39 - 18:41
Does another verse come to mind?
  • 18:41 - 18:44
(Travis) Amos, chapter 3, verse 7?
  • 18:44 - 18:45
    (Christian) Okay, would you
  • 18:45 - 18:46
    read that for us, Travis?
  • 18:46 - 18:49
    Amos, chapter 3, verse 7,
  • 18:49 - 18:52
what does that say about God's ability
  • 18:52 - 18:54
    to foresee the future?
  • 18:54 - 18:56
    (Travis) And I'll be reading
  • 18:56 - 18:58
from the New King James Version:
  • 19:05 - 19:07
(Christian) Is that a God you can trust?
  • 19:07 - 19:08
    (Jason) Yes.
  • 19:08 - 19:10
    (Christian) I mean, isn't that a God
  • 19:10 - 19:12
    that we can approach
  • 19:12 - 19:15
    and believe that, you know,
  • 19:15 - 19:18
I can give my life to a God
  • 19:18 - 19:21
who is not going to be a God
  • 19:21 - 19:23
    who catches me off guard?
  • 19:23 - 19:24
    He is not a God
  • 19:24 - 19:26
who is going to lead me into the unknown
  • 19:26 - 19:28
    and then leave me there
  • 19:28 - 19:30
    to figure things out.
  • 19:30 - 19:32
He is a God who says, "I will
  • 19:32 - 19:34
reveal to you things to come,
  • 19:34 - 19:37
so you don't have to be afraid."
  • 19:37 - 19:39
And so, Isaiah, indeed, is inspired
  • 19:39 - 19:41
    by the Holy Spirit
  • 19:41 - 19:44
    and given the ability
  • 19:44 - 19:46
    to write these prophecies
  • 19:46 - 19:49
because God is a God who knows
  • 19:49 - 19:50
the end from the beginning. Yes.
  • 19:50 - 19:52
(Derek) I met an Orthodox Muslim
  • 19:52 - 19:53
who became a follower of Jesus
  • 19:53 - 19:56
who was startled by this prophecy,
  • 19:56 - 19:57
    "How could it be?"
  • 19:57 - 19:59
That would be like saying a great city
  • 19:59 - 20:02
    like Rome would be desolate
    and never inhabited.
  • 20:02 - 20:05
    They always rebuilt the cities
    that God devastated.
  • 20:05 - 20:07
But Babylon, no, it was fulfilled
  • 20:07 - 20:10
exactly as you said, [predicted] 200 years
  • 20:10 - 20:12
    before it even happened,
  • 20:12 - 20:14
    and that's caused many people,
  • 20:14 - 20:18
when they look with an open mind
    at the Scriptures,
  • 20:18 - 20:19
to say, "There is a God
  • 20:19 - 20:21
    who knows the future."
  • 20:21 - 20:26
(Christian) Amen. So, in 587 B.C.,
  • 20:26 - 20:29
    Babylon comes and utterly destroys
    Jerusalem,
  • 20:29 - 20:31
    and Judah is taken captive
  • 20:31 - 20:35
    until about 539 B.C.
  • 20:35 - 20:39
    And this was when Babylon
    was conquered itself.
  • 20:39 - 20:44
Now, what prophet comes to mind
  • 20:44 - 20:47
    who wrote in detail
  • 20:47 - 20:50
    about the conquest of Babylon?
  • 20:50 - 20:52
Does a prophet come to mind
  • 20:52 - 20:54
who received a vision from God
  • 20:54 - 20:58
that Babylon would not last forever.
  • 20:58 - 21:00
    Now, King Nebuchadnezzar would have
  • 21:00 - 21:04
    never admitted that his kingdom
  • 21:04 - 21:08
would ever come to an end,
    but God did.
  • 21:08 - 21:09
    What prophet comes to mind?
  • 21:09 - 21:10
    (Team) Daniel.
  • 21:10 - 21:12
    (Christian) Daniel, that's right.
  • 21:12 - 21:16
What chapter in Daniel speaks specifically
  • 21:16 - 21:21
about the overthrow of the kingdom
    of Babylon?
  • 21:21 - 21:23
(Travis) Well, there are actually two,
  • 21:23 - 21:25
Daniel, chapter 2 and Daniel, chapter 5.
  • 21:25 - 21:28
(Christian) Daniel, chapter 2 and 5,
    that's true, twice.
  • 21:28 - 21:31
In fact, one could say that Daniel 2
  • 21:31 - 21:34
is the prophecy itself that foresaw
  • 21:34 - 21:36
    the fall of Babylon,
  • 21:36 - 21:38
    and in Daniel, chapter 5,
  • 21:38 - 21:40
    we see its fulfillment.
  • 21:40 - 21:42
    Daniel, chapter 5, that's right.
  • 21:42 - 21:44
    (Derek) But even the handwriting
  • 21:44 - 21:45
on the wall is still a prophecy.
  • 21:45 - 21:48
It will be fulfilled a few hours later,
  • 21:48 - 21:50
but I don't think the people in Babylon
  • 21:50 - 21:53
believed it would be fulfilled, you know?
  • 21:53 - 21:55
But just before that day's over
  • 21:55 - 21:58
and that night is over, Belshazzar's dead.
  • 21:58 - 21:59
    (Christian) Unbelievable.
  • 21:59 - 22:00
    (Derek) So, you know,
  • 22:00 - 22:03
    whether it's 200 years before
    or 4 hours before,
  • 22:03 - 22:05
it's still a God who knows the future.
  • 22:05 - 22:07
    (Christian) And that's interesting
  • 22:07 - 22:08
    you should say that,
  • 22:08 - 22:10
because in Daniel 5, verse 1,
  • 22:10 - 22:12
    it mentions specifically that Darius
  • 22:12 - 22:15
was planning a great party that night.
  • 22:15 - 22:17
Boy, it was going to be a long night...
  • 22:17 - 22:18
    (Derek) Belshazzar, you mean.
  • 22:18 - 22:21
    (Christian) Belshazzar, that's right.
  • 22:21 - 22:23
    Thank you, you're keeping me
    in line here,
  • 22:23 - 22:25
    keeping me in line.
  • 22:25 - 22:27
    Belshazzar was planning
  • 22:27 - 22:29
    a party that night,
  • 22:29 - 22:37
but then, as you said, within hours
    Babylon is overtaken.
  • 22:37 - 22:39
Jason, I saw your hand go up.
  • 22:39 - 22:40
    (Jason) Yes, because I think
  • 22:40 - 22:41
    this is kind of fascinating,
  • 22:41 - 22:44
    as Derek was referencing,
  • 22:44 - 22:46
that God's prophecies can come true
  • 22:46 - 22:49
    whether it's hundreds of years
    or it's hours,
  • 22:49 - 22:51
and it's neat here because Daniel
  • 22:51 - 22:53
    is another prophet of God,
  • 22:53 - 22:54
    kind of like Isaiah,
  • 22:54 - 22:56
    that God is working through.
  • 22:56 - 22:57
    God has these prophets.
  • 22:57 - 22:59
You know, as Travis read there in Amos,
  • 22:59 - 23:00
God is not going to do anything
  • 23:00 - 23:03
    unless He reveals these secrets
    to His servants.
  • 23:03 - 23:04
    In this case, it's interesting
  • 23:04 - 23:06
because at first He actually reveals...
  • 23:06 - 23:07
    Well, He shows the king
  • 23:07 - 23:09
    the handwriting on the wall.
  • 23:09 - 23:11
The king doesn't know it, though,
  • 23:11 - 23:13
so he actually has to go to God's prophet,
  • 23:13 - 23:15
the one who God has revealed
  • 23:15 - 23:16
    what's going to happen.
  • 23:16 - 23:18
So, sometimes God will give us messages
  • 23:18 - 23:20
    we may not fully understand,
  • 23:20 - 23:21
    which is why we need
  • 23:21 - 23:23
    to be connected with God,
  • 23:23 - 23:25
    because the people who are
    connected with God,
  • 23:25 - 23:27
    His prophets, the ones working
    through Him,
  • 23:27 - 23:28
they will be able to know
  • 23:28 - 23:30
    what's going to happen.
  • 23:30 - 23:33
    (Christian) Amen. Yes, Travis.
  • 23:33 - 23:34
(Travis) So, I agree with that,
  • 23:34 - 23:36
    and I agree with Derek,
  • 23:36 - 23:39
that I see the love of God here
  • 23:39 - 23:41
    because He's giving a prophecy
  • 23:41 - 23:42
    through Isaiah, then through Daniel
  • 23:42 - 23:44
    in Daniel, chapter 2,
  • 23:44 - 23:46
and then again in Daniel 5
  • 23:46 - 23:47
with the handwriting on the wall.
  • 23:47 - 23:49
    What a merciful God
  • 23:49 - 23:53
that keeps relentlessly letting them know
  • 23:53 - 23:55
    what is going to happen.
  • 23:55 - 23:58
And then, as you had mentioned, Derek,
  • 23:58 - 23:59
he thought it must have been a joke,
  • 23:59 - 24:02
and we read about this earlier,
  • 24:02 - 24:06
there was a prophecy in the story of Lot,
  • 24:06 - 24:09
    that his sons-in-law, future sons-in-law,
  • 24:09 - 24:10
thought it was going to be a joke,
  • 24:10 - 24:12
    but it's not a joke.
  • 24:12 - 24:14
God's Word is...I mean, when He says
  • 24:14 - 24:15
    something's going to happen,
  • 24:15 - 24:17
    it's going to happen.
  • 24:17 - 24:19
And it just makes me think, you know,
  • 24:19 - 24:21
    when God says something
  • 24:21 - 24:23
that's going to happen, in the Bible,
  • 24:23 - 24:25
we can really take this seriously.
  • 24:25 - 24:26
    (Derek) Amen.
  • 24:26 - 24:28
    (Christian) And, Travis, you
  • 24:28 - 24:29
brought up a really good point,
  • 24:29 - 24:32
    how there were multiple revelations
  • 24:32 - 24:34
    of this event, okay?
  • 24:34 - 24:36
    And it's interesting to me
  • 24:36 - 24:39
that in Daniel, chapter 5, verse 22,
  • 24:39 - 24:40
    it mentions just that.
  • 24:40 - 24:43
It says, "But you his son, Belshazzar,
  • 24:43 - 24:46
    have not humbled your heart,
  • 24:46 - 24:50
    although you knew all this."
  • 24:50 - 24:52
    "You knew all this."
  • 24:52 - 24:56
If Belshazzar had truly humbled himself
  • 24:56 - 24:58
    and just tuned his mind
  • 24:58 - 25:02
    to meditate on and ponder
  • 25:02 - 25:04
the prophecies that had been told,
  • 25:04 - 25:06
    not once, not just twice,
  • 25:06 - 25:08
    but now three times,
  • 25:08 - 25:12
maybe the outcome would have been
    a little different.
  • 25:12 - 25:15
But instead, judgment comes upon Babylon,
  • 25:15 - 25:17
    and, of course, Medo-Persia comes
  • 25:17 - 25:22
and overtakes Babylon in a single night.
  • 25:22 - 25:25
    What an amazing, amazing revelation
  • 25:25 - 25:28
    of God's ability to foresee
  • 25:28 - 25:30
the end from the beginning -
  • 25:30 - 25:35
    relying on God's Word.
  • 25:35 - 25:37
    When I think about prophecy,
  • 25:37 - 25:41
I can't help but to realize that prophecy
  • 25:41 - 25:42
    is one of those things
  • 25:42 - 25:46
that can really give me confidence
  • 25:46 - 25:48
in a God that I can trust.
  • 25:48 - 25:50
You know, there's such an attack
  • 25:50 - 25:51
    on the character of God
  • 25:51 - 25:54
    leading people to conclude,
  • 25:54 - 25:56
    "Can I trust God?"
  • 25:56 - 26:00
or, "Can I trust Him with my life?"
  • 26:00 - 26:02
But doesn't prophecy have a way
  • 26:02 - 26:06
to be able to present to us a God
  • 26:06 - 26:10
that we can trust and not be afraid?
  • 26:10 - 26:13
And when you think about prophecy,
  • 26:13 - 26:16
you know, we're all here Bible students,
  • 26:16 - 26:20
can you think of the time when you came
  • 26:20 - 26:23
to be convicted that Bible prophecy is,
  • 26:23 - 26:28
indeed, a reliable revelation from God?
  • 26:28 - 26:30
    And how did that impact
  • 26:30 - 26:32
    your spiritual journey with God,
  • 26:32 - 26:34
or your spiritual growth with God?
  • 26:34 - 26:37
Did that make a significant difference?
    Billy.
  • 26:37 - 26:41
(Billy) So, going back to Daniel,
  • 26:41 - 26:44
I was comparing the prophecy of Daniel
  • 26:44 - 26:46
in the days that were given about Babylon
  • 26:46 - 26:47
    and then Medes and Persians,
  • 26:47 - 26:49
so I said, "Okay, that's nice.
  • 26:49 - 26:52
Let me check out the internet."
  • 26:52 - 26:54
So, I went on the internet, Wikipedia,
  • 26:54 - 26:56
and I'm looking at the dates,
  • 26:56 - 26:59
and I said, "Wait, that is so accurate,"
  • 26:59 - 27:02
because it's telling of the kingdoms
    that will happen,
  • 27:02 - 27:04
    and what got me was
  • 27:04 - 27:06
there was a prophecy, I think,
  • 27:06 - 27:08
    about the ten kingdoms
  • 27:08 - 27:10
    that would succeed Rome,
  • 27:10 - 27:12
and I said, "Wow, that's very interesting.
  • 27:12 - 27:13
    Let me go online,"
  • 27:13 - 27:15
    And, indeed, I'm finding out
  • 27:15 - 27:18
these ten kingdoms and the relationship
    between them,
  • 27:18 - 27:20
and I think that further convicted me
  • 27:20 - 27:23
that this is real; this is real.
  • 27:23 - 27:24
    (Christian) Amen.
  • 27:24 - 27:26
    (Derek) What convicted me, Christian,
  • 27:26 - 27:29
was the story in Luke 24 of Jesus
  • 27:29 - 27:33
giving a Bible study to two disciples,
  • 27:33 - 27:34
    and it says their hearts
  • 27:34 - 27:36
    burned within them, you know.
  • 27:36 - 27:38
    And I thought, "If Jesus
  • 27:38 - 27:41
has such confidence in the Scriptures,
  • 27:41 - 27:43
    and the prophecies particularly
  • 27:43 - 27:45
that pointed to Him as Messiah,
  • 27:45 - 27:47
I need to have confidence, too,"
  • 27:47 - 27:49
    because Jesus healed the sick,
  • 27:49 - 27:50
    He cast out the demons,
  • 27:50 - 27:51
He was the Son of God,
  • 27:51 - 27:54
and He trusted that Word of God.
  • 27:54 - 27:56
    In fact, He said, "Man
  • 27:56 - 27:59
shall not live by bread alone
    but every word..."
  • 27:59 - 28:04
So, to me, His unshakable confidence
    in the Scriptures,
  • 28:04 - 28:06
    including the prophecies,
  • 28:06 - 28:09
was the thing that really impacted me
    the most.
  • 28:09 - 28:13
(Christian) Amen. And, let's take a moment
  • 28:13 - 28:16
to maybe share a specific prophecy
  • 28:16 - 28:18
    that has impacted your life
  • 28:18 - 28:19
    in a significant way.
  • 28:19 - 28:21
Can you think of a particular prophecy
  • 28:21 - 28:24
that just opened up your eyes
  • 28:24 - 28:26
in such a way that you truly felt
  • 28:26 - 28:29
fire in your bones, you know,
  • 28:29 - 28:32
    because your faith was rekindled
  • 28:32 - 28:35
    when you studied that prophecy?
  • 28:35 - 28:37
Does any prophecy come to mind? Yes, Liza.
  • 28:37 - 28:39
(Liza) I think about Matthew 24,
  • 28:39 - 28:41
    and this is Jesus' prophecy
    of the end time,
  • 28:41 - 28:43
    and He gets very specific
  • 28:43 - 28:44
    on the kind of world
  • 28:44 - 28:46
    that we'll be living in.
  • 28:46 - 28:48
We're living in that world right now.
  • 28:48 - 28:50
And so, when we see these things
    that are unstable,
  • 28:50 - 28:52
and when we see things falling apart,
  • 28:52 - 28:55
Jesus prophesied that, and so we need
  • 28:55 - 28:59
to not be disturbed or anxious
    about these things.
  • 28:59 - 29:02
Christ forewarned us, and as believers
  • 29:02 - 29:04
we need to be firm in the faith
  • 29:04 - 29:07
    and the prophecies that God
    speaks about us.
  • 29:07 - 29:09
(Christian) Amen. And what a prophecy
  • 29:09 - 29:11
to be studying in these days.
  • 29:11 - 29:13
    As we see the world
  • 29:13 - 29:16
    just completely in chaos,
  • 29:16 - 29:20
we come to Matthew 24, and the mere fact
  • 29:20 - 29:22
    that Jesus saw this coming,
  • 29:22 - 29:25
and He said, "Watch and pray,"
  • 29:25 - 29:29
we are able to draw near to the future
  • 29:29 - 29:31
    with a sense of confidence,
  • 29:31 - 29:34
    knowing what to expect,
  • 29:34 - 29:36
    and that just ignites
  • 29:36 - 29:38
a renewed faith in God. Yes.
  • 29:38 - 29:42
    (Travis) So, for me, it's
    a personal prophecy.
  • 29:42 - 29:44
    You know, there are prophecies
    about kingdoms,
  • 29:44 - 29:47
but Paul wrote in the Philippians,
  • 29:47 - 29:50
in Philippians 1:6, that He promised,
  • 29:50 - 29:51
    that God promises to finish
  • 29:51 - 29:53
the work He started in us.
  • 29:53 - 29:54
    And as a Christian
  • 29:54 - 29:57
who falls occasionally and makes mistakes,
  • 29:57 - 30:01
I think, "He said Babylon would fall,
  • 30:01 - 30:03
and it did, but He also said He
  • 30:03 - 30:04
    would finish the work
  • 30:04 - 30:05
    that He started in me."
  • 30:05 - 30:06
    (Christian) Amen.
  • 30:06 - 30:08
(Travis) And it's not a joke.
  • 30:08 - 30:09
    (Derek) Praise God.
  • 30:09 - 30:11
(Travis) I can rest in the fact
  • 30:11 - 30:13
that, if I lean on Jesus,
  • 30:13 - 30:15
    stay close to Him,
  • 30:15 - 30:17
I may not be perfect now,
  • 30:17 - 30:18
    but I won't look back...
  • 30:18 - 30:20
The Apostle Paul said, "I don't look back,
  • 30:20 - 30:22
    I keep looking ahead."
  • 30:22 - 30:25
And I just rest in Jesus,
  • 30:25 - 30:27
and He will finish that work.
  • 30:27 - 30:29
So, that's been a lifesaver for me.
  • 30:29 - 30:32
    (Christian) Powerful. Yes, Stephanie.
  • 30:32 - 30:35
    (Stephanie) Somewhat along those
    same lines,
  • 30:35 - 30:37
    I think it builds...
  • 30:37 - 30:39
    Seeing the fulfillment of prophecy
  • 30:39 - 30:42
    has built faith in me
  • 30:42 - 30:45
    to trust God regardless,
  • 30:45 - 30:48
    and especially when I see
    something different.
  • 30:48 - 30:50
And that is something that is...
  • 30:50 - 30:52
That's what we have to do now
  • 30:52 - 30:54
    and in the time ahead.
  • 30:54 - 30:56
We have to be able to say,
  • 30:56 - 30:58
"You know what, I don't see
  • 30:58 - 31:01
    the fulfillment of God's promise
  • 31:01 - 31:04
that He has guaranteed in His Word,
  • 31:04 - 31:06
but I know He guaranteed it,
  • 31:06 - 31:08
    and I can trust Him."
  • 31:08 - 31:10
    (Christian) Amen. And when we
  • 31:10 - 31:13
take matters into our own hands, okay,
  • 31:13 - 31:15
    then that's when life
  • 31:15 - 31:17
    gets even more complicated
  • 31:17 - 31:20
because we're departing from a God
  • 31:20 - 31:23
who already has the future in His hands.
  • 31:23 - 31:26
And, like you said, we can trust Him.
  • 31:26 - 31:27
    We can trust Him.
  • 31:27 - 31:29
You know, one prophecy that made
  • 31:29 - 31:32
    an impact in my life
  • 31:32 - 31:35
is actually found in Isaiah, chapter 14.
  • 31:35 - 31:37
I'd like us to go to Isaiah, chapter 14.
  • 31:37 - 31:40
Isaiah, chapter 14, it made an impact
  • 31:40 - 31:46
in my life if only because it exposes
  • 31:46 - 31:48
    the enemy of God.
  • 31:48 - 31:49
    You know, when you think
  • 31:49 - 31:53
about your journey of faith, okay,
  • 31:53 - 31:54
    wouldn't you agree
  • 31:54 - 31:56
that your journey of faith can
  • 31:56 - 32:03
actually gain strength when you are aware
  • 32:03 - 32:05
of the tactics of the enemy?
  • 32:05 - 32:08
When you know how the enemy will attack,
  • 32:08 - 32:10
when you know the character of the enemy,
  • 32:10 - 32:14
    it places you on ground
  • 32:14 - 32:16
    which can actually prove
  • 32:16 - 32:19
    to be a wonderful thing.
  • 32:19 - 32:23
Now, Isaiah, chapter 14, verses 12 to 15,
  • 32:23 - 32:25
    has a few verses there
  • 32:25 - 32:28
that actually give us an insight
  • 32:28 - 32:32
    on the character of Lucifer.
  • 32:32 - 32:34
Now, we know something about Lucifer.
  • 32:34 - 32:36
Before we go to the passage,
  • 32:36 - 32:40
what do we know about Lucifer -
    who was Lucifer?
  • 32:40 - 32:42
Who would like to be able to just give us
  • 32:42 - 32:45
    a snapshot of this Lucifer?
  • 32:45 - 32:46
    Who was Lucifer, Jason?
  • 32:46 - 32:48
    (Jason) So, Lucifer was one
  • 32:48 - 32:50
of the head angels, if you will,
  • 32:50 - 32:52
that was in the throne room of God,
  • 32:52 - 32:55
and he was there literally right next
  • 32:55 - 32:57
to Jesus, the Son of God.
  • 32:57 - 32:59
    He was a created being;
  • 32:59 - 33:00
    he was still an angel,
  • 33:00 - 33:01
but he was very close to God,
  • 33:01 - 33:04
and he was in charge of leading
    all the angels.
  • 33:04 - 33:06
    And he had a lot of special talents;
  • 33:06 - 33:09
    he was very good at music;
  • 33:09 - 33:11
he was very good with his words,
  • 33:11 - 33:14
and God had really blessed him,
  • 33:14 - 33:17
    which, that's great; there were
    also some problems, though.
  • 33:17 - 33:19
I don't know how far you want me to go,
  • 33:19 - 33:20
but he had some pride issues
  • 33:20 - 33:22
    that became problematic later on.
  • 33:22 - 33:25
    (Christian) Okay, so you're right.
  • 33:25 - 33:28
He was a created being, an angel.
  • 33:28 - 33:29
    Of course, we could
  • 33:29 - 33:31
even then call him a fallen angel
  • 33:31 - 33:34
because he would go from an exalted place,
  • 33:34 - 33:38
a covering cherub, to a fallen state.
  • 33:38 - 33:40
And here in Isaiah, Isaiah, chapter 14,
  • 33:40 - 33:46
verses 12 to 15, we find a description
  • 33:46 - 33:49
of what was going on in his mind.
  • 33:49 - 33:51
So, let's take a look at this passage,
  • 33:51 - 33:54
and, Billy, could you read that for us?
  • 33:54 - 33:57
    Isaiah, chapter 14, verses 12 to 15.
  • 33:57 - 34:01
What was going on inside Lucifer's mind?
  • 34:01 - 34:02
    (Billy) I'll be reading
  • 34:02 - 34:04
from the New King James Version:
  • 34:40 - 34:43
(Christian) So, here's a fallen angel
    who is coveting.
  • 34:43 - 34:45
    What is he coveting?
  • 34:45 - 34:47
    What is he hungry for?
  • 34:47 - 34:49
    What is he thirsty for?
  • 34:49 - 34:52
    (Stephanie) Power, position.
  • 34:52 - 34:53
    (Christian) Power, position,
  • 34:53 - 34:55
    but not just any power
  • 34:55 - 34:57
    or just any position,
  • 34:57 - 35:00
but whose power and whose position?
  • 35:00 - 35:03
(Jason) God. He literally wants to be God.
  • 35:03 - 35:07
(Christian) He is coveting God's authority
  • 35:07 - 35:09
    or God's position, okay,
  • 35:09 - 35:11
and so here we see in Isaiah
  • 35:11 - 35:13
    a contrast of sorts
  • 35:13 - 35:17
    because Isaiah refers to Lucifer
  • 35:17 - 35:21
as the son of the morning.
  • 35:21 - 35:24
But we also know that Christ Himself
  • 35:24 - 35:27
is known as the bright morning star.
  • 35:27 - 35:30
And so, we begin to see a contrast
  • 35:30 - 35:32
    between this fallen angel
  • 35:32 - 35:36
    and the Messiah King. Yes.
  • 35:36 - 35:37
    (Derek) The difference is,
  • 35:37 - 35:40
that created angel, while he was faithful,
  • 35:40 - 35:43
the light which shone from his presence
  • 35:43 - 35:46
was a reflection of the Son of God,
  • 35:46 - 35:49
    because after he rebels,
  • 35:49 - 35:51
    Jesus never calls him Lucifer.
  • 35:51 - 35:52
    (Christian) Prince of Darkness.
  • 35:52 - 35:54
    (Derek) He's called the Prince
    of Darkness;
  • 35:54 - 35:57
    he's called Satan, which means
    "the Opposer,"
  • 35:57 - 35:59
and diabolos or devil, Jesus calls him,
  • 35:59 - 36:02
    which is the Accuser,
  • 36:02 - 36:04
    and that Old Serpent, right?
  • 36:04 - 36:06
    So, all of the light
  • 36:06 - 36:09
    that he thought was his
  • 36:09 - 36:11
was gone when he separated himself
  • 36:11 - 36:13
    from the glory of God.
  • 36:13 - 36:14
    (Christian) Wow, wow, wow,
  • 36:14 - 36:16
    what a powerful insight.
  • 36:16 - 36:19
And, you know, this leads me
  • 36:19 - 36:20
    to a question, though,
  • 36:20 - 36:24
a question that is quite intriguing to me:
  • 36:24 - 36:30
why would Isaiah embed this prophecy,
  • 36:30 - 36:36
    this prophetic revelation, about Lucifer
  • 36:36 - 36:38
    right in the smack middle
  • 36:38 - 36:41
    of a prophecy against judgment
  • 36:41 - 36:43
on the enemies of God's people?
  • 36:43 - 36:45
    I mean, it seems like...
  • 36:45 - 36:47
    What's his intention here?
  • 36:47 - 36:49
    What's going on, Travis?
  • 36:49 - 36:50
(Travis) I think God is giving us
  • 36:50 - 36:52
    a glimpse of the heart
  • 36:52 - 36:53
    of the kings of Babylon.
  • 36:53 - 36:54
    (Christian) Wow, okay.
  • 36:54 - 36:57
    (Travis) He's giving us...I remember,
  • 36:57 - 37:00
I'm studying Daniel, and when Daniel
  • 37:00 - 37:02
(chapter 2) tells the king that, "You've
  • 37:02 - 37:03
    been given this prophecy
  • 37:03 - 37:07
so your heart would be revealed."
  • 37:07 - 37:09
    And so here we're given
  • 37:09 - 37:11
a glimpse of Lucifer so we can see
  • 37:11 - 37:13
that the hearts kind of align
  • 37:13 - 37:16
    with Lucifer's - it's all selfish.
  • 37:16 - 37:18
    First Corinthians, chapter 13,
  • 37:18 - 37:21
I think in verse 5 it says
  • 37:21 - 37:23
that love does not seek its own.
  • 37:23 - 37:26
    So, it's this self-seeking thing,
  • 37:26 - 37:28
    and love is others-centered,
  • 37:28 - 37:30
and that's God, the character of God.
  • 37:30 - 37:32
Others, He's always worried about others.
  • 37:32 - 37:35
And now, here are these kings and Lucifer
  • 37:35 - 37:36
    all worried about trying
  • 37:36 - 37:38
to exalt themselves, kind of like
  • 37:38 - 37:39
the Tower of Babel, "Let us
  • 37:39 - 37:41
    make a name for ourselves."
  • 37:41 - 37:43
And so, we're getting a glimpse here
  • 37:43 - 37:46
    into what these kingdoms
    were looking like
  • 37:46 - 37:48
and how their leaders were leading.
  • 37:48 - 37:50
    (Christian) Wow, because these leaders
    that are leading,
  • 37:50 - 37:53
there is a long list of leaders
  • 37:53 - 37:56
    that were prideful, arrogant, right?
  • 37:56 - 37:58
And what I hear you say, Travis,
  • 37:58 - 38:02
is that, as we look at this lineage
  • 38:02 - 38:04
    of kings that were
  • 38:04 - 38:06
    rebellious and prideful,
  • 38:06 - 38:10
that this prophecy actually, while it
  • 38:10 - 38:13
    exposes the mind of Satan,
  • 38:13 - 38:17
it actually reveals the very nature
    of sin,
  • 38:17 - 38:20
which is found in each one of us
  • 38:20 - 38:23
when we depart from a relationship,
  • 38:23 - 38:26
    an abiding relationship with Christ.
  • 38:26 - 38:29
What we see here described as Lucifer
  • 38:29 - 38:32
is in fact the very nature of sin,
  • 38:32 - 38:36
    which seeks to exalt itself
  • 38:36 - 38:39
and wants to be like God or wants
  • 38:39 - 38:42
to be in control of my own life.
    Yes, Stephanie?
  • 38:42 - 38:44
    (Stephanie) Christian, I think
  • 38:44 - 38:47
    it's a warning; it's a warning call, too.
  • 38:47 - 38:50
And it's so the heart of God,
  • 38:50 - 38:52
that we see that thread throughout.
  • 38:52 - 38:57
It's a warning: Don't go down that path.
  • 38:57 - 39:00
Do not follow what has happened before,
  • 39:00 - 39:01
    and so many others
  • 39:01 - 39:03
    have fallen as a result.
  • 39:03 - 39:05
    (Christian) Wow. Yes.
  • 39:05 - 39:06
    (Derek) I think it's a message
  • 39:06 - 39:08
    of warning for our day
  • 39:08 - 39:10
    when people don't even believe
  • 39:10 - 39:13
    that the adversary exists.
  • 39:13 - 39:15
But Paul says, "We don't wrestle
  • 39:15 - 39:16
    against flesh and blood,
  • 39:16 - 39:19
    but against principalities and powers
  • 39:19 - 39:21
    in the heavenly realms."
  • 39:21 - 39:23
    So, these are supernatural forces
  • 39:23 - 39:25
    that have rebelled against God.
  • 39:25 - 39:27
And what I see in this prophecy,
  • 39:27 - 39:28
    and again with Jesus
  • 39:28 - 39:30
in the wilderness and so on,
  • 39:30 - 39:33
this is a real being that rebelled.
  • 39:33 - 39:35
    And if we read Revelation,
  • 39:35 - 39:38
    other angels rebelled with him,
  • 39:38 - 39:41
so this is confederation of evil.
  • 39:41 - 39:43
I'm so thankful for the Bible
  • 39:43 - 39:44
    because it tells me
  • 39:44 - 39:46
    that God's Kingdom is victorious.
  • 39:46 - 39:48
But it is a real battle.
  • 39:48 - 39:49
    (Christian) Amen. Absolutely.
  • 39:49 - 39:51
He's actually pulling back the curtains
  • 39:51 - 39:56
    and exposing the unseen realm,
  • 39:56 - 40:00
which is very much, very much alive
    and well today.
  • 40:00 - 40:02
Yes, Liza, you had your hand up?
  • 40:02 - 40:03
    (Liza) Absolutely, what Pastor said.
  • 40:03 - 40:05
Everything that we see here in the natural
  • 40:05 - 40:07
is a reflection of the supernatural.
  • 40:07 - 40:09
And that's why he's showing us
  • 40:09 - 40:11
    a picture of worldly events,
  • 40:11 - 40:13
    but he's saying, "They're spiritual,"
  • 40:13 - 40:14
    as Pastor Derek said,
  • 40:14 - 40:16
    these spiritual forces are trying
  • 40:16 - 40:18
to establish themselves upon the earth,
  • 40:18 - 40:20
and so we have to be careful.
  • 40:20 - 40:22
As was said, we're not wrestling
  • 40:22 - 40:23
    against flesh and blood,
  • 40:23 - 40:25
    or one kingdom against another;
  • 40:25 - 40:27
    it's God's holiness and all
  • 40:27 - 40:29
these evil beings that are trying
  • 40:29 - 40:31
to bring themselves upon the earth.
  • 40:31 - 40:32
And so, we need to be guarded,
  • 40:32 - 40:34
and I think that's where we're going here,
  • 40:34 - 40:36
about being careful and not putting
  • 40:36 - 40:37
    our trust in what we
  • 40:37 - 40:39
    may not understand fully.
  • 40:39 - 40:42
(Christian) Yes. So, Isaiah, chapter 14,
  • 40:42 - 40:44
    gives us an inside look
  • 40:44 - 40:47
    into the mind of Lucifer.
  • 40:47 - 40:49
    Is there another prophet
  • 40:49 - 40:52
    and another passage that adds
  • 40:52 - 40:55
    additional information about what was
  • 40:55 - 40:57
    going on with Lucifer.
  • 40:57 - 40:58
    What were his motives?
  • 40:58 - 41:02
What was he trying to get to?
  • 41:02 - 41:04
Does another passage in the Old Testament
  • 41:04 - 41:07
    come to mind? Yes, Jason?
  • 41:07 - 41:12
(Jason) So, I think of Ezekiel,
    another prophet.
  • 41:12 - 41:16
Would I be able to go ahead and read?
    Ezekiel, chapter 28?
  • 41:16 - 41:18
    (Christian) Take us to Ezekiel,
    chapter 28.
  • 41:18 - 41:21
Why don't you read verses 13 to 15?
  • 41:21 - 41:22
    (Jason) Alright, I've got
  • 41:22 - 41:24
the New King James Version here,
  • 41:24 - 41:27
and it says, Ezekiel 28, verses 13 to 15:
  • 42:10 - 42:12
    (Christian) You know what grabs
    my attention?
  • 42:12 - 42:15
Just three words: You were created.
  • 42:15 - 42:18
We're dealing with a created being,
  • 42:18 - 42:20
    a created being that wanted
  • 42:20 - 42:23
to be like the Most High,
  • 42:23 - 42:25
when you take the passage there
    from Isaiah.
  • 42:25 - 42:27
    So, think about this.
  • 42:27 - 42:29
    Here's a created being
  • 42:29 - 42:32
who wants to be like the Most High,
  • 42:32 - 42:35
    created being, or creature,
  • 42:35 - 42:38
wanting to be like the Most High.
  • 42:38 - 42:40
Is that beginning to ring a bell?
  • 42:40 - 42:44
    Does it sound awfully familiar
  • 42:44 - 42:50
    to a conversation that happened
    in the beginning?
  • 42:50 - 42:53
We have a woman; what's her name?
  • 42:53 - 42:54
    (Team) Eve.
  • 42:54 - 42:56
    (Christian) Eve, created by God,
  • 42:56 - 43:00
    and Satan, Lucifer, now Satan
  • 43:00 - 43:01
in the form of a serpent,
  • 43:01 - 43:05
    comes to this created being
  • 43:05 - 43:08
    and whispers into her ear,
  • 43:08 - 43:11
    "You can be like God."
  • 43:11 - 43:14
Do you see how Lucifer's character,
  • 43:14 - 43:17
his motives, have not changed one iota?
  • 43:17 - 43:19
They have not changed at all.
  • 43:19 - 43:23
He continues to reveal his true character,
  • 43:23 - 43:27
which is to cause us to distrust God,
  • 43:27 - 43:32
to look towards ourselves and convince us
  • 43:32 - 43:33
    that we can manage
  • 43:33 - 43:37
our life just fine without God,
  • 43:37 - 43:38
that, "You can do just fine.
  • 43:38 - 43:40
    You be your own judge.
  • 43:40 - 43:41
    You determine what's right
  • 43:41 - 43:44
and what's wrong on your own.
  • 43:44 - 43:45
    You don't need God
  • 43:45 - 43:47
    to tell you those things."
  • 43:47 - 43:53
And Satan is referred to as a murderer,
    a liar.
  • 43:53 - 43:55
Do you know what passage in the Gospels
  • 43:55 - 43:58
    we find where Jesus referred
  • 43:58 - 44:00
    to Satan as a liar?
  • 44:00 - 44:01
Can you think of a passage
  • 44:01 - 44:02
    that comes to mind?
  • 44:02 - 44:03
    (Stephanie) John 8:44.
  • 44:03 - 44:06
    (Christian) John 8:44, Stephanie,
would you read that for us?
  • 44:06 - 44:08
Why don't we go to it, John 8:44,
  • 44:08 - 44:15
    and here Jesus describes Satan.
  • 44:15 - 44:18
    And listen as Stephanie reads
  • 44:18 - 44:24
at how Jesus seems to just really focus in
  • 44:24 - 44:28
    on one predominant characteristic
    of Satan,
  • 44:28 - 44:29
    and what is that?
  • 44:29 - 44:32
(Stephanie) The King James Version says:
  • 44:52 - 44:54
    (Christian) Do you notice
    that common theme?
  • 44:54 - 44:56
    He's called a liar;
  • 44:56 - 44:59
    there is no truth in him;
  • 44:59 - 45:02
Satan is a deceiver. Yes, Billy.
  • 45:02 - 45:04
    (Billy) So, it's interesting
  • 45:04 - 45:05
    because sometimes I think,
  • 45:05 - 45:07
    especially in our world today,
  • 45:07 - 45:09
    we try to justify lying,
  • 45:09 - 45:11
and I guess it begs the question,
  • 45:11 - 45:12
    should we draw a line
  • 45:12 - 45:14
    between truth and lie?
  • 45:14 - 45:16
The reason why is because I know
  • 45:16 - 45:18
    some people who would say,
  • 45:18 - 45:20
    well, there is nothing wrong
  • 45:20 - 45:21
    with a white lie,
  • 45:21 - 45:22
    and it's coming from people
  • 45:22 - 45:23
    who should know better.
  • 45:23 - 45:25
    But there is that justification
  • 45:25 - 45:28
that, yes, little lies should be okay,
  • 45:28 - 45:29
    and that's the culture
  • 45:29 - 45:31
    that we live in today,
  • 45:31 - 45:34
so am I correct in understanding
  • 45:34 - 45:37
that, based on that, anybody who lies
  • 45:37 - 45:39
    is a follower of Satan?
  • 45:39 - 45:40
    Or, is there a distinction
  • 45:40 - 45:42
    between, should we be quick
  • 45:42 - 45:44
to judge people who lie and say
  • 45:44 - 45:47
that you are of your father, the devil,
  • 45:47 - 45:50
or should we give them a free pass?
  • 45:50 - 45:52
    So, it's a question, I guess
    for the class.
  • 45:52 - 45:54
    (Christian) That's an excellent question.
  • 45:54 - 45:56
    Yes, some insight, yes, Travis.
  • 45:56 - 45:58
    (Travis) I'm sitting here listening,
  • 45:58 - 45:59
    and I'm really thankful
  • 45:59 - 46:00
    for the Holy Spirit.
  • 46:00 - 46:03
I'm thankful because I remember, even now
  • 46:03 - 46:04
    sometimes I'll say something
  • 46:04 - 46:09
that, you know, that might not be true,
  • 46:09 - 46:10
    without even intention,
  • 46:10 - 46:12
    and that little voice
  • 46:12 - 46:14
in the back of my head, "Travis,
    that wasn't right."
  • 46:14 - 46:16
And I'm able either to correct it
  • 46:16 - 46:18
    or ask for forgiveness.
  • 46:18 - 46:19
And so, I'm sitting here thinking,
  • 46:19 - 46:21
    I'm so thankful for God
  • 46:21 - 46:23
who sends His Spirit to remind us,
  • 46:23 - 46:26
"Hey," to keep getting us back
  • 46:26 - 46:28
    onto that narrow path
  • 46:28 - 46:29
    because the path is wide
  • 46:29 - 46:31
    that leads to destruction.
  • 46:31 - 46:32
    And Satan is doing anything
  • 46:32 - 46:33
to get us on that path.
  • 46:33 - 46:36
So, God's got to exit off that path many,
  • 46:36 - 46:37
    "Just get back on path,"
  • 46:37 - 46:38
    and that's the Holy Spirit
  • 46:38 - 46:40
to keep whispering in our ear,
  • 46:40 - 46:42
"Stay on track, stay on track."
  • 46:42 - 46:44
(Christian) Yes, because it was Jesus
  • 46:44 - 46:49
who said, "I am the way, the truth..."
  • 46:49 - 46:51
    (Christian, Team) "...and the life."
  • 46:51 - 46:53
(Christian) And now He calls Satan,
  • 46:53 - 46:57
he is a liar, the father of lies.
  • 46:57 - 47:01
And so, going back to Billy's question,
  • 47:01 - 47:05
when I think about our journey,
  • 47:05 - 47:07
    and our trust in God,
  • 47:07 - 47:10
there are going to be times when we feel
  • 47:10 - 47:16
    that we must find ourselves
  • 47:16 - 47:18
    out of this difficult situation,
  • 47:18 - 47:21
    and we're sometimes tempted,
    the greater good,
  • 47:21 - 47:23
because we don't want to find ourselves
  • 47:23 - 47:26
    in this dangerous, life-threatening
    situation.
  • 47:26 - 47:29
I must get myself out of this situation,
  • 47:29 - 47:33
    and we're tempted to justify
  • 47:33 - 47:34
    a mistruth or something
  • 47:34 - 47:37
that would bring us out of that.
  • 47:37 - 47:39
But you know what I've discovered, Billy,
  • 47:39 - 47:41
in my own personal life, and I'm sure
  • 47:41 - 47:42
in many of your lives as well,
  • 47:42 - 47:46
    that when we trust God,
  • 47:46 - 47:49
we come to a place in our life
  • 47:49 - 47:52
when we can say, "You know, God,
  • 47:52 - 47:54
I don't know what is happening,
  • 47:54 - 47:57
and I don't know where this is going,
  • 47:57 - 48:02
but I will trust in You and put
  • 48:02 - 48:07
    my full confidence in You
    and not compromise.
  • 48:07 - 48:11
And I will leave the consequences to You."
  • 48:11 - 48:13
    Because sometimes we're wanting
  • 48:13 - 48:16
    to manipulate the circumstances,
  • 48:16 - 48:19
and that's when compromise takes place.
  • 48:19 - 48:21
But if we're true to the Word of God,
  • 48:21 - 48:24
He is the way, the truth and the life,
  • 48:24 - 48:26
I think we can trust God with consequences
  • 48:26 - 48:27
no matter what comes our way.
  • 48:27 - 48:29
You know, and when I think
  • 48:29 - 48:30
    about the Great Controversy,
  • 48:30 - 48:32
I think about this intense battle
  • 48:32 - 48:34
    between good and evil, yes,
  • 48:34 - 48:36
    God and Satan, of course,
  • 48:36 - 48:38
but when you really think about it,
  • 48:38 - 48:41
the essence of the Great Controversy
  • 48:41 - 48:45
    is between truth and deception,
  • 48:45 - 48:51
truth and lies, and the battlefield
    is the mind.
  • 48:51 - 48:56
And I wonder, does anyone want to share
  • 48:56 - 49:00
    maybe an experience where Satan
  • 49:00 - 49:04
    attacked you with the intention
  • 49:04 - 49:08
to cause you to believe one of his lies?
  • 49:08 - 49:11
    You know, lies about yourself,
  • 49:11 - 49:14
lies about God, lies about others.
  • 49:14 - 49:15
Can anyone think of a story
  • 49:15 - 49:17
that comes to mind, a testimony
  • 49:17 - 49:21
of an intense attack from the enemy,
  • 49:21 - 49:22
    the father of lies?
  • 49:22 - 49:24
Anyone have a story they'd like to share?
  • 49:24 - 49:27
(Derek) I have a short one, Christian.
  • 49:27 - 49:30
Someone, a teacher I greatly respected,
  • 49:30 - 49:33
    walked away from the church,
  • 49:33 - 49:35
and at first I was in a great crisis,
  • 49:35 - 49:38
I think a temptation of the enemy:
  • 49:38 - 49:40
    Do I still belong here,
  • 49:40 - 49:41
    with this person leaving?
  • 49:41 - 49:43
I'm so thankful that the Spirit of God
  • 49:43 - 49:45
    said, "I didn't call you
  • 49:45 - 49:47
    to follow that person;
  • 49:47 - 49:49
    you're called to follow Jesus."
  • 49:49 - 49:52
And we need that, what Travis is saying,
  • 49:52 - 49:54
    we need the Holy Spirit.
  • 49:54 - 49:56
Didn't Jesus say the Holy Spirit
  • 49:56 - 49:59
will lead you into all truth?
  • 49:59 - 50:01
    And Jesus is full of grace and truth;
  • 50:01 - 50:03
He is the truth, as you said.
  • 50:03 - 50:05
    But I think you're right.
  • 50:05 - 50:09
I think sometimes it catches us unawares,
    this temptation,
  • 50:09 - 50:12
and we have to cry out to God
  • 50:12 - 50:15
to ask the Holy Spirit to lead us
  • 50:15 - 50:18
    away from that alluring deception
  • 50:18 - 50:21
and lead us in the way of truth.
  • 50:21 - 50:23
    (Christian) And I can testify
  • 50:23 - 50:26
that, as I look back in my life,
  • 50:26 - 50:28
and I think, I recall the times
  • 50:28 - 50:31
that the enemy has shown himself
  • 50:31 - 50:35
to be powerful in my life,
  • 50:35 - 50:36
    you know what I've discovered?
  • 50:36 - 50:40
That in those moments, there was a lie
  • 50:40 - 50:43
that I had come to believe,
  • 50:43 - 50:46
    concluding that the only power
  • 50:46 - 50:48
that the enemy can have in our lives
  • 50:48 - 50:51
is the power of the lie!
  • 50:51 - 50:54
If he can convince me of his lie,
  • 50:54 - 50:59
then he brings me under his control,
  • 50:59 - 51:00
and ground is given to the enemy
  • 51:00 - 51:03
    when we believe his lies.
  • 51:03 - 51:05
And so that is why the study of God's Word
  • 51:05 - 51:07
    and Dr. Morris here
  • 51:07 - 51:08
    with Hope Sabbath School,
  • 51:08 - 51:09
that's what this is all about,
  • 51:09 - 51:11
you know, being able to dig deep
  • 51:11 - 51:12
    into the Word of God
  • 51:12 - 51:16
so that we can be grounded in truth,
    so we can be...
  • 51:16 - 51:18
    (Derek) Grounded in Jesus.
  • 51:18 - 51:19
    (Christian) ...grounded in Jesus
  • 51:19 - 51:23
who is the way, the truth and the life.
  • 51:23 - 51:27
So, you know, Ephesians, chapter 6,
  • 51:27 - 51:30
comes to mind when I think
    about application.
  • 51:30 - 51:32
    Let's apply the Scriptures here
  • 51:32 - 51:33
    for a moment in Ephesians,
  • 51:33 - 51:36
    chapter 6, verses 10 to 18.
  • 51:36 - 51:38
In fact, we're not going to take
  • 51:38 - 51:39
    the time to read it,
  • 51:39 - 51:40
    but in that passage there
  • 51:40 - 51:42
    in Ephesians, chapter 6,
  • 51:42 - 51:45
    we find a special gift
  • 51:45 - 51:48
given to the Christian as a protection
  • 51:48 - 51:52
against this enemy, this father of lies.
  • 51:52 - 51:55
And what is that protection given to us
  • 51:55 - 51:57
    there in Ephesians, chapter 6,
    what is it called?
  • 51:57 - 52:01
(Christian, Team) The armor of God.
  • 52:01 - 52:02
(Christian) And I want to encourage
  • 52:02 - 52:04
    our viewers to take time
  • 52:04 - 52:06
to go to Ephesians, chapter 6,
  • 52:06 - 52:07
    and study this out,
  • 52:07 - 52:10
because truly there is a lot to learn.
  • 52:10 - 52:12
But with the moment that we have left,
  • 52:12 - 52:15
I'd like us to do a full circle.
  • 52:15 - 52:17
You know, we started with Babylon
  • 52:17 - 52:20
as a nation that was being judged by God.
  • 52:20 - 52:23
And now, as we come back to Revelation,
  • 52:23 - 52:27
the prophetic book of the New Testament,
  • 52:27 - 52:29
    we discover that Babylon
  • 52:29 - 52:32
    is mentioned once again.
  • 52:32 - 52:33
    Now, it's interesting to me
  • 52:33 - 52:36
that, in Revelation, there are 100,
  • 52:36 - 52:39
    or, rather, 404 verses.
  • 52:39 - 52:41
    If you're viewing at home,
  • 52:41 - 52:42
you want to take time to count,
  • 52:42 - 52:45
you let us know if I'm off by one or two,
  • 52:45 - 52:47
    but I read 404 verses.
  • 52:47 - 52:51
Out of those 404 verses, 278 verses
  • 52:51 - 52:55
are a reference or an illusion,
    direct or indirect,
  • 52:55 - 52:57
    to the Old Testament,
  • 52:57 - 53:01
and that includes the mention of Babylon.
  • 53:01 - 53:05
It's mentioned in Revelation, chapter 17.
  • 53:05 - 53:07
So, I'd like for us to take a moment
  • 53:07 - 53:09
to go to Revelation, chapter 17,
  • 53:09 - 53:12
and here we find a description
  • 53:12 - 53:15
    of a persecuting power
  • 53:15 - 53:20
that is also given the name "Babylon."
  • 53:20 - 53:23
    Revelation, chapter 17, verses 1 to 6,
  • 53:23 - 53:25
Travis, could you read that for us?
  • 53:25 - 53:27
(Travis) Sure, and I'll be reading
  • 53:27 - 53:29
from the New King James Version:
  • 54:19 - 54:21
(Christian) Wow, so in the Old Testament,
  • 54:21 - 54:23
no doubt we have literal Babylon.
  • 54:23 - 54:25
    We see this nation
  • 54:25 - 54:28
    that overtakes Jerusalem, a nation
  • 54:28 - 54:31
that is overtaken by Medes and Persians.
  • 54:31 - 54:33
    It's a literal nation, right?
  • 54:33 - 54:37
But here in this passage in Revelation,
  • 54:37 - 54:39
and you can correct me if I'm wrong,
  • 54:39 - 54:42
but this doesn't sound like a description
  • 54:42 - 54:45
of a literal nation named Babylon,
  • 54:45 - 54:50
    but rather a spiritual perspective
    or context.
  • 54:50 - 54:51
    How would you explain that?
  • 54:51 - 54:55
Why is Babylon mentioned once again,
  • 54:55 - 54:58
    apparently in an end-time scenario?
  • 54:58 - 55:02
Why the use of Babylon once again?
  • 55:02 - 55:03
    Is there something significant
  • 55:03 - 55:05
    about the name "Babylon"
  • 55:05 - 55:08
that we might be able to make sense
  • 55:08 - 55:13
    out of this particular context
    in Revelation?
  • 55:13 - 55:14
    What do you think? Billy?
  • 55:14 - 55:16
(Billy) I guess just a simple comparison
  • 55:16 - 55:18
    is the spirit behind Babylon
  • 55:18 - 55:21
    in Isaiah versus this one.
  • 55:21 - 55:24
    It ties into Lucifer,
  • 55:24 - 55:28
that there is a common denominator
  • 55:28 - 55:29
for all of them, that there is
  • 55:29 - 55:31
    an evil spirit behind them.
  • 55:31 - 55:33
And you can easily see a comparison
  • 55:33 - 55:36
    between how bad they were
  • 55:36 - 55:39
in the book of Isaiah and this one, too,
  • 55:39 - 55:41
    because they carried the same...
  • 55:41 - 55:43
    Even though it's like
    different time frames
  • 55:43 - 55:44
    and they may not be
  • 55:44 - 55:46
    the exact same kingdoms,
  • 55:46 - 55:48
but the spirits are very similar,
  • 55:48 - 55:49
    the hatred for God's people,
  • 55:49 - 55:51
    the hatred for truth
  • 55:51 - 55:55
and exalting pride and also lies.
  • 55:55 - 55:56
    It's the same thing
  • 55:56 - 55:57
that we're seeing in the end times.
  • 55:57 - 56:00
    (Christian) Okay, with all
    those characteristics,
  • 56:00 - 56:02
it obviously leads to spiritual confusion.
  • 56:02 - 56:05
And so, here we have a scenario
  • 56:05 - 56:08
    where there is spiritual confusion
    on Earth.
  • 56:08 - 56:09
    And you know what?
  • 56:09 - 56:12
When I look at the prophecies of Isaiah,
  • 56:12 - 56:15
when I look at the context of Babylon
  • 56:15 - 56:18
and compare it to spiritual Babylon
    there in Revelation,
  • 56:18 - 56:20
I see a call there in Revelation,
  • 56:20 - 56:22
    chapter 18, that calls us
  • 56:22 - 56:24
    to come out of her,
  • 56:24 - 56:26
    a reference to spiritual Babylon.
  • 56:26 - 56:29
    But a reference, an invitation
  • 56:29 - 56:31
to come to the One who says,
  • 56:31 - 56:33
"I am the way, the truth, and the life."
  • 56:33 - 56:35
And I think of Jesus' call when He said,
  • 56:35 - 56:38
"Come unto Me, come unto Me,
  • 56:38 - 56:40
and I will give you rest."
  • 56:40 - 56:44
So, our prayer is that God's call
  • 56:44 - 56:45
will be a call that invites you
  • 56:45 - 56:48
to come to Him, to trust Him,
