Art of The Brain

  • 0:17 - 0:21
Jim Owens is a husband, a father, and an athlete,
  • 0:21 - 0:24
he was out training for a marathon, when he felt some weakness
  • 0:24 - 0:26
in one side of his body,
  • 0:26 - 0:29
the next day he was told he had a brain tumor
  • 0:29 - 0:32
but through all the treatments, and all the surgeries,
  • 0:32 - 0:35
Jim has kept up the fight, he recently competed
  • 0:35 - 0:38
in a cross-country ski event. He actually said,
  • 0:38 - 0:41
"I'm not going to let this run my life."
  • 0:41 - 0:50
    (music)
  • 0:50 - 0:53
Another is Kim Gray a successful dentist,
  • 0:53 - 0:55
who's life changed forever when doctors found a
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    a golf ball sized tumor.
  • 0:57 - 0:58
    Doctors removed the tumor,
  • 0:58 - 1:01
but her days as a dentist were over,
  • 1:01 - 1:04
but she refused to stop living her life,
  • 1:04 - 1:07
Kim went to an art class with a friend and suddenly discovered
  • 1:07 - 1:11
she was a painter, she just sold her first piece of artwork.
  • 1:11 - 1:15
    (music)
  • 2:01 - 2:04
Tonight is called Art of The Brain,
  • 2:04 - 2:07
we honor all brain cancer patients who are under the care
  • 2:07 - 2:10
    of Dr. Tim Cloughesy.
  • 2:10 - 2:11
    We want to...
  • 2:11 - 2:14
I asked him early on, what was one thing
  • 2:14 - 2:16
all the patients had in common,
  • 2:16 - 2:19
    those who got better,
  • 2:19 - 2:22
He said, The one thing they have in common is Art.
  • 2:22 - 2:26
Art meaning everything from poetry to music making,
  • 2:26 - 2:30
    to writing, filmmaking.
  • 2:30 - 2:34
So I drew on that to help other patients,
  • 2:34 - 2:38
so we put this on every year in the fall
  • 2:38 - 2:42
so we can display Art, or like tonight is more about
  • 2:42 - 2:49
Singing for Survival is the tittle of this event tonight.
  • 2:49 - 3:03
    (music)
  • 3:03 - 3:05
When we started this in the year 2000,
  • 3:05 - 3:08
I would've never imagined that we'd be going as strong as
  • 3:08 - 3:11
we are now raising over 5 million dollars
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    for advanced brain cancer.
  • 3:13 - 3:14
    Thank you.
  • 3:14 - 3:18
    (applause)
  • 3:18 - 3:20
    This would've never happened
  • 3:20 - 3:23
without the efforts of Judi Kaufman.
  • 3:23 - 3:29
    (applauses and cheers)
  • 3:29 - 3:33
And all of our patients who inspire us each and every day
  • 3:33 - 3:35
    to search for a cure.
  • 3:35 - 3:38
In particular, there has been a confluence of therapeutic
  • 3:38 - 3:41
and technological advances there are changing the face
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    of brain cancer care.
  • 3:43 - 3:46
Thirteen years ago the first Human Genome
  • 3:46 - 3:51
was sequenced, it took ten years and three billion dollars.
  • 3:51 - 3:57
Today, we can sequence an individuals tumor over
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    three to four days
  • 3:59 - 4:01
at a cost of around a thousand dollars,
  • 4:01 - 4:05
it's cheaper than an MRI scan.
  • 4:05 - 4:09
The data that exist in this cancer genome gives us clues
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    to the cause of cancer,
  • 4:11 - 4:14
    how cancer evades treatment
  • 4:14 - 4:18
and how it provides insight into better, more rational,
  • 4:18 - 4:20
    personalized therapies.
  • 4:20 - 4:29
    (music)
  • 4:29 - 4:31
    Everything here is volunteer,
  • 4:31 - 4:34
    we pay for nothing,
  • 4:34 - 4:36
everybody comes from the goodness of their heart,
  • 4:36 - 4:39
everything is donated, we don't pay for a thing,
  • 4:39 - 4:42
    we just love everybody,
  • 4:42 - 4:46
this Art of The Brain is based on love and big hearts.
