Pilot - Welcome to RoPeCast, reloaded

  • 0:02 - 0:03
    From the campus studios
  • 0:03 - 0:05
    of Saarland university,
  • 0:05 - 0:06
    this is RoPeCast,
  • 0:06 - 0:08
    the light-hearted podcast
  • 0:08 - 0:09
    for learners of English,
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    with Roger Charlton
  • 0:11 - 0:12
    and Peter Tischer.
  • 0:13 - 0:14
    Hello everyone!
  • 0:14 - 0:15
    My name is Peter,
  • 0:15 - 0:18
and you are listening to RoPeCast,
  • 0:18 - 0:21
the podcast on interesting, funny, strange
  • 0:21 - 0:25
    and surprising aspects
    of the English language.
  • 0:26 - 0:28
Well, and this means we have quite
  • 0:28 - 0:30
a lot of topics in store for you.
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    And when I say we
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    that is not myself alone
  • 0:35 - 0:38
That is a friend of mine
    and a colleague of mine
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    Roger Charlton. Hi Roger!
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    Hi Peter!
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    Well, and, Roger, actually,
  • 0:44 - 0:46
you're the one who's got the topic list
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    sitting on his lap,
  • 0:48 - 0:51
so you might as well tell our listeners,
  • 0:51 - 0:53
what we have in store for them,
  • 0:53 - 0:55
    in the next few weeks.
  • 0:55 - 0:58
Right! Yeah, for example, does it matter
  • 0:58 - 1:00
if I make a grammatical mistake
  • 1:00 - 1:02
when I'm using English or is it ...
  • 1:02 - 1:03
    ... ehem, I ...
    I sure hope it doesn't!
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    No. Maybe it's more important
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    to get the words right,
  • 1:07 - 1:08
    the vocabulary right.
  • 1:08 - 1:09
Which is a problem for me, too,
  • 1:09 - 1:10
    from time to time,
  • 1:10 - 1:13
since I'm not a native speaker of English.
  • 1:13 - 1:15
So, guys out there, and girls,
  • 1:15 - 1:16
    bear with me,
  • 1:16 - 1:19
I'm in the same boat with you!
  • 1:19 - 1:21
And then, perhaps, we'll take a look at
  • 1:21 - 1:24
    sport and sports, for example,
  • 1:24 - 1:27
how do you understand the word football?
  • 1:27 - 1:30
OK, well, I understand it as being a game
  • 1:30 - 1:33
that is really rough, for tough guys
  • 1:33 - 1:34
    - like me -
  • 1:34 - 1:35
    I mean, unfortunately
  • 1:35 - 1:37
you cannot see me in the studio,
  • 1:37 - 1:40
but I have really broad shoulders.
  • 1:40 - 1:42
And for me it would be soccer.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
Aha, ok, ok. You are more the elegant
  • 1:45 - 1:46
    ... person.
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    - Thank you!
  • 1:48 - 1:50
And then, some practical hints about ...
  • 1:50 - 1:51
Well, is it a good idea
  • 1:51 - 1:53
to go to an English speaking country
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    to get more practice?
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    If so - which country?
  • 1:57 - 1:59
    How do I organise myself?
  • 1:59 - 2:00
How do I pay for it?
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    Are there scholarships?
  • 2:02 - 2:04
Yeah, where do I get the money? - Exactly!
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    Scholarships, training abroad ...
  • 2:06 - 2:08
One thing that is interesting for me,
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    once I am there,
  • 2:10 - 2:11
how do you make the most of it?
  • 2:11 - 2:12
    I mean, you're there
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    in the English speaking world,
  • 2:14 - 2:15
    and you're saying:
  • 2:15 - 2:18
How do I improve my English here?
  • 2:18 - 2:19
Yeah! - I mean, they know it,
  • 2:19 - 2:21
but how do I get better?
  • 2:21 - 2:21
    That's right,
  • 2:21 - 2:23
so there'll ne plenty of tips!
  • 2:23 - 2:24
    Ahah.
  • 2:24 - 2:27
Plenty of topics and plenty of things
  • 2:27 - 2:30
that we will try to explain to you
  • 2:30 - 2:33
    that may be confusing to
  • 2:33 - 2:36
    non-native speakers of English,
  • 2:36 - 2:38
    especially to Germans.
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    And, since we're talking
    about confusing things,
  • 2:42 - 2:46
a few ... one thing that may be
    confusing to everybody
  • 2:46 - 2:48
who's listening to us right now,
  • 2:48 - 2:51
is actually the title of our podcast- Yes.
  • 2:51 - 2:53
    - which is "RoPeCast".
  • 2:53 - 2:57
    And, well, there's more
than one reason for this title.
  • 2:57 - 3:00
The first and most straight forward reason
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    is actually our names.
  • 3:02 - 3:05
    Yeah, my name is Roger,
    which gives us "Ro".
  • 3:05 - 3:09
And my name is Peter, which gives you "Pe".
  • 3:09 - 3:12
And, of course we are doing a podCAST,
  • 3:12 - 3:17
    and together this gives us
    "Ro-Pe-Cast" - RoPeCast.
  • 3:17 - 3:20
    - Yes! - But that's not
    the only reason, actually:
  • 3:20 - 3:22
No, we're also thinking, a rope is kind of
  • 3:22 - 3:25
a ... something you could grab hold of,
  • 3:25 - 3:28
    something to give you security
    if you're sinking,
  • 3:28 - 3:32
drowning - Drowning in that sea of words
  • 3:32 - 3:34
    - Yes! - that is the English language.
  • 3:34 - 3:35
    Right! - Right!
  • 3:35 - 3:38
    So, folks, we're actually trying
    to throw you guys,
  • 3:38 - 3:40
    and you girls of course,
  • 3:40 - 3:42
    a lifeline to survive
  • 3:42 - 3:45
    when you're speaking English.
  • 3:45 - 3:47
I hope you can understand us,
  • 3:47 - 3:50
    'cause this is a podcast
    for advanced learners.
  • 3:50 - 3:53
But we're trying to speak slowly here,
  • 3:53 - 3:56
    and we're trying
to get you a little bit further
  • 3:56 - 4:00
    in your English learning process.
  • 4:00 - 4:01
    And next time,
  • 4:01 - 4:03
    we will have something
    really interesting for you,
  • 4:03 - 4:06
    which are words
    that are called 'false friends',
  • 4:06 - 4:09
and we're gonna tell you, for example,
  • 4:09 - 4:11
why it may come in handy
  • 4:11 - 4:13
to have a Beemer with you
  • 4:13 - 4:16
if you're travelling across the USA.
  • 4:16 - 4:18
    - That's right!- Not surprising to you, Roger,
  • 4:18 - 4:21
but maybe to a few of you. - I think so!
  • 4:21 - 4:24
So, stay tuned or tune in again,
  • 4:24 - 4:26
    download that podcast,
  • 4:26 - 4:27
    keep it on your iTunes
  • 4:27 - 4:32
    when we're gonna talk about
    Beemers and stuff, next time.
  • 4:32 - 4:35
So, here's us, Roger and Peter,
  • 4:35 - 4:37
    signing off for this week.
  • 4:37 - 4:39
    Bye-bye for now. - Bye!
