Look Away From Your Feelings and Trust the Savior - Mack Tomlinson

  • 0:00 - 0:02
Question: What would you say to those
  • 0:02 - 0:04
who are looking for a feeling,
  • 0:04 - 0:10
    or they've got some sin
they're trying to let go of?
  • 0:10 - 0:13
    That that's stopping them
    from coming to Christ?
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    Mack: Well, the New Testament
  • 0:15 - 0:17
never tells us to feel anything.
  • 0:17 - 0:19
It doesn't even use that word
  • 0:19 - 0:22
    in the context of salvation.
  • 0:22 - 0:26
Our minds must know the facts.
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    If I know I'm a true sinner,
  • 0:28 - 0:31
    and I know I can't save myself,
  • 0:31 - 0:35
    I must be persuaded that
    these things are true,
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    that they're facts.
  • 0:37 - 0:40
And my mind as well as my heart
  • 0:40 - 0:44
    must embrace the truth.
  • 0:44 - 0:45
    We shouldn't look for feelings.
  • 0:45 - 0:48
    Feelings can be deceiving.
  • 0:48 - 0:49
    Feelings can mislead us.
  • 0:49 - 0:52
    If we're looking for feelings
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    and we don't have them,
  • 0:55 - 0:59
    then we think that we
    still need something else
  • 0:59 - 1:00
    or we're trusting in that.
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    So, feelings mean nothing.
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    Emotions mean nothing.
  • 1:05 - 1:09
They can mislead us and deceive us.
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    So, they're not important.
  • 1:11 - 1:16
    Now, oftentimes, they will come.
  • 1:16 - 1:19
    Oftentimes, they will accompany salvation
  • 1:19 - 1:22
or they will accompany true conversion,
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    but they're not necessary.
  • 1:24 - 1:26
And no one should look for those
  • 1:26 - 1:29
    or be dependent on feelings
  • 1:29 - 1:32
    to trust Christ.
  • 1:32 - 1:35
All that's needed is that we know
  • 1:35 - 1:39
in our hearts we're a true sinner
  • 1:39 - 1:42
and we truly need a Savior.
  • 1:42 - 1:43
You can be persuaded of that
  • 1:43 - 1:45
and that's a true feeling in your life
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    and in your heart,
  • 1:47 - 1:51
but it necessarily doesn't mean emotions.
  • 1:51 - 1:55
All that's needed is to truly know
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    of our need for Him.
  • 1:57 - 2:00
And that's the basis upon which we come.
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    Don't trust feelings.
  • 2:02 - 2:04
We can look away from any feelings
  • 2:04 - 2:08
    and trust the Savior.
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    Question: What about someone
  • 2:10 - 2:12
who's holding on to a certain sin
  • 2:12 - 2:15
that's stopping them coming to Christ.
  • 2:15 - 2:18
    What would you say?
  • 2:18 - 2:21
Mack: Well, any sin, any particular sin
  • 2:21 - 2:22
    can have us in bondage,
  • 2:22 - 2:26
    whether it's pornography, or lust,
  • 2:26 - 2:29
or greed, or love of money,
  • 2:29 - 2:31
    or an adulterous relationship,
  • 2:31 - 2:34
or religious pride. It doesn't matter.
  • 2:34 - 2:38
One sin can keep you out of Heaven.
  • 2:38 - 2:41
One sin can put you in hell.
  • 2:41 - 2:47
So, Paul said to the Thessalonians,
  • 2:47 - 2:49
he spoke to them about how they had
  • 2:49 - 2:52
    turned from idols
  • 2:52 - 2:54
    to serve the living God.
  • 2:54 - 2:59
We must turn from our sins,
  • 2:59 - 3:02
    which means if a person
  • 3:02 - 3:06
has come to the place where they know
  • 3:06 - 3:07
    the Gospel is true;
  • 3:07 - 3:11
they know Jesus Christ is the only way,
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    they will either hold on
  • 3:13 - 3:20
to the sin that they love the most
  • 3:20 - 3:22
    and lose Christ and perish,
  • 3:22 - 3:26
or they must relinquish and lay down
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    and turn from that sin
  • 3:28 - 3:30
to be able to embrace Christ.
  • 3:30 - 3:33
You can not have Him and your sin.
  • 3:33 - 3:37
    So the important thing for
    such a person to realize
  • 3:37 - 3:41
is do I love my sin so much
  • 3:41 - 3:42
    that has me in bondage?
  • 3:42 - 3:44
    Do I love my chains?
  • 3:44 - 3:47
    The bondage that it brings?
  • 3:47 - 3:49
That I would rather have my sin
  • 3:49 - 3:51
    and hell for eternity
  • 3:51 - 3:54
than freedom and Christ for eternity?
  • 3:54 - 3:57
    Which is wise?
  • 3:57 - 3:58
    Which do you truly want?
  • 3:58 - 4:01
Are you willing to love your sin
  • 4:01 - 4:03
and embrace it and not let it go
  • 4:03 - 4:08
and let it take you to hell for eternity?
  • 4:08 - 4:10
You need to see that your sin
  • 4:10 - 4:12
    cannot save you,
  • 4:12 - 4:14
    it cannot satisfy you,
  • 4:14 - 4:16
    it can only destroy you.
  • 4:16 - 4:19
    And yes, you love it,
  • 4:19 - 4:22
    but you've got to
recognize it for what it is.
  • 4:22 - 4:24
You cannot hold on to it anymore.
  • 4:24 - 4:26
You have to count the cost.
  • 4:26 - 4:29
There was a young man in the New Testament
  • 4:29 - 4:32
who believed that he was upright,
  • 4:32 - 4:33
    that he was good,
  • 4:33 - 4:35
that he kept the commandments of God,
  • 4:35 - 4:37
    but he loved his riches.
  • 4:37 - 4:39
    He loved his money
  • 4:39 - 4:41
    because he was very rich.
  • 4:41 - 4:45
And Jesus told him that he had to
  • 4:45 - 4:48
give it all to the poor
  • 4:48 - 4:51
    and come and follow Him.
  • 4:51 - 4:53
The man went away very sorrowful
  • 4:53 - 4:57
because he could not give up his money
  • 4:57 - 4:59
    and follow Christ.
  • 4:59 - 5:03
So, if you have a sin
  • 5:03 - 5:06
    that you're holding on to,
  • 5:06 - 5:08
    forsake it. Turn from it.
  • 5:08 - 5:09
    It will not satisfy you.
  • 5:09 - 5:11
    It will only destroy you.
  • 5:11 - 5:14
You must see it as an enemy to your soul,
  • 5:14 - 5:16
    whatever that sin is,
  • 5:16 - 5:20
that you might be able to embrace Christ.
  • 5:20 - 5:24
I would say be honest with God about that.
  • 5:24 - 5:27
Tell Him: I have this sin
  • 5:27 - 5:28
    that is in my life.
  • 5:28 - 5:30
I have this thing that I love
  • 5:30 - 5:32
that I don't want to give up,
  • 5:32 - 5:36
but I know Jesus is real.
  • 5:36 - 5:38
Cry out to God for mercy.
  • 5:38 - 5:40
Ask Him to work in you.
  • 5:40 - 5:41
    Begin to pray about that
  • 5:41 - 5:43
    and be honest with God.
  • 5:43 - 5:45
That would be the beginning place.
