Dutch Sign Language, also known as Nederlandse Gebarentaal (NGT) and Sign Language of the Netherlands (SLN), is spoken by as many as 16,000 people in the Netherlands, where it is the primary signed language. A member of the French Sign family of languages, SLN shares genealogy with dozens sign languages across Europe and the Americas, including those of Russia, Mexico, and the United States. While it is taught in some deaf schools, SLN remains politically unrecognized.
