GRB Kokocaster Guitar REVIEW (GG-501) How to play

  • 0:09 - 0:11
    How you been doing people?
  • 0:11 - 0:12
I hope you're all well and happy
  • 0:12 - 0:13
    Justin here
  • 0:14 - 0:15
    In this little clip today
  • 0:15 - 0:16
I'm going to be giving you
  • 0:16 - 0:18
    a bit of a demo
  • 0:18 - 0:19
a review kind of thing on
  • 0:20 - 0:21
    this very nice guitar
  • 0:21 - 0:23
which is a GRB Coco casta
  • 0:25 - 0:27
Gordon from GRB gave me a donation
  • 0:27 - 0:28
    of this guitar
  • 0:29 - 0:31
because he liked the website and stuff
  • 0:31 - 0:33
and I thought I'd give him a little review
  • 0:33 - 0:35
let him know what I think of it
  • 0:35 - 0:37
you guys know what I think.
  • 0:37 - 0:39
This is kind of a mid-price guitar
  • 0:39 - 0:41
I think it retails at about $899 U.S
  • 0:41 - 0:42
    dollars.
  • 0:43 - 0:44
So it's not a cheap guitar
  • 0:44 - 0:46
and it's not made like a cheap guitar
  • 0:46 - 0:47
but it's not is the same league
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    as my old vintage
  • 0:49 - 0:50
    strats and stuff, you know.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
But it's got a lot of good things
  • 0:52 - 0:54
going for it, a lot of good sounds in it
  • 0:54 - 0:55
a couple of really funky things
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    about the pick up.
  • 0:57 - 0:58
So I'm just going to go through and
  • 0:58 - 1:00
explain some of those things to you now
  • 1:00 - 1:02
so you get a sort of a vibe on this guitar
  • 1:02 - 1:03
    Really well made
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    it's mahogany body
  • 1:05 - 1:08
with a cut away hole, I cant' remember
  • 1:08 - 1:10
I think they call it a sound chamber
  • 1:10 - 1:14
and it's a quilted maple top
  • 1:15 - 1:17
so it kind of looks nice as you can see
  • 1:17 - 1:20
it's a bit of a sun burst color.
  • 1:20 - 1:22
It's got two pick ups, one's called
  • 1:22 - 1:25
a lipstick pick up, which I'll give you
  • 1:25 - 1:26
a vibe on the sound in a second.
  • 1:26 - 1:28
It's got a really high output humbucker
  • 1:28 - 1:29
    pickup in it which is
  • 1:29 - 1:31
like when it says high output on the
  • 1:31 - 1:33
website but it's really high output.
  • 1:33 - 1:36
Volume and tone, one tone control
  • 1:36 - 1:38
    really full on tone control
  • 1:38 - 1:39
I'll demonstrate that in a sec.
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    and it's also what's called a push-pull
  • 1:41 - 1:44
so you can pull the tone knob in and out
  • 1:44 - 1:46
I'm pretty sure it's splitting the
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    Humbucker because it sounds like
  • 1:48 - 1:48
    a single coil
  • 1:48 - 1:50
it comes with two different types of
  • 1:50 - 1:52
bridges, you can either get a tremolo
  • 1:52 - 1:53
    version like this one
  • 1:53 - 1:55
or you can get what's called a hardtail
  • 1:55 - 1:57
which doesn't have the tremolo effect
  • 1:57 - 1:59
if any of you guys are complete beginners
  • 1:59 - 2:01
you might want to go with the Hardtail one
  • 2:01 - 2:02
as apposed to the Tremolo one
  • 2:02 - 2:04
cause the tremolo one is notoriously
  • 2:04 - 2:06
they are not that difficult to get in tune
  • 2:06 - 2:08
but they can be difficult to get in tune
  • 2:08 - 2:10
and if you break a string while using one
  • 2:10 - 2:12
with a tremolo the rest of the strings
  • 2:12 - 2:13
    often pop out of tune
  • 2:13 - 2:15
you have to restring before you can keep
  • 2:15 - 2:15
    using it.
  • 2:15 - 2:17
Hence why a lot people have a spare guitar
  • 2:17 - 2:19
when their playing with a tremolo.
  • 2:19 - 2:21
Let me just go through some of the sounds
  • 2:21 - 2:22
    that this thing's got
  • 2:23 - 2:25
gonna start of with a lipstick pickup
  • 2:25 - 2:27
I'm gonna put the volume control up all
  • 2:27 - 2:28
    the way
  • 2:28 - 2:30
this is just going through my
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    Sir Badger 30 amplifier
  • 2:32 - 2:34
it's got a little bit of reverb courtesy
  • 2:34 - 2:37
    of this G-lab reverb pedal
  • 2:38 - 2:41
which is the only effect i'll be using
  • 2:41 - 2:43
on this little bit of reverb
  • 2:43 - 2:45
which most amp's have built in
  • 2:46 - 2:47
    here's just the lipstick pickup
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    with the tone right up
  • 2:49 - 2:50
so this front pick up, the silver one
  • 2:50 - 2:52
I'll give you a couple close ups of the
  • 2:52 - 2:54
guitar later so you can have
  • 2:54 - 2:55
    a bit of a gander
  • 3:01 - 3:03
Really really nice sound, nice clean sound
  • 3:03 - 3:04
    for this lipstick
  • 3:05 - 3:07
It's also really good for your bright
  • 3:07 - 3:08
    50's and 60's
  • 3:16 - 3:19
That kind of sound effect is a nice crispy
  • 3:20 - 3:21
    really bright
  • 3:25 - 3:27
    really crispy bright sound there
  • 3:27 - 3:28
    with the old lipstick
  • 3:28 - 3:30
Now the tone control on this is really
  • 3:30 - 3:31
    really strong
  • 3:31 - 3:33
I'm not sure exactly what they do to them
  • 3:33 - 3:34
    to make them like this
  • 3:34 - 3:36
a lot of guitars don't have as good a
  • 3:36 - 3:37
    tone control as this.
  • 3:37 - 3:39
If I start with the tone control now
  • 3:39 - 3:41
currently right up, which is the position
  • 3:41 - 3:43
you'll have your tone in most of the time
  • 3:44 - 3:46
but if i back it right off to nothing
  • 3:47 - 3:49
It's really like it's got a sock over it
  • 3:49 - 3:51
it's taking away all the tops completely
  • 3:57 - 3:58
that's a little bit not tune
  • 3:58 - 4:00
it's not quite as smooth as it is on
  • 4:00 - 4:02
    the really high end guitars
  • 4:02 - 4:04
as I gradually bring it up it goes from
  • 4:04 - 4:06
the muffled sound to the bright real quick
  • 4:07 - 4:10
there we go now you move to about one
  • 4:11 - 4:13
which can be quite a nice effect
  • 4:13 - 4:15
I think the sounds that I quite
  • 4:15 - 4:16
    like with this one
  • 4:17 - 4:19
is just bringing so you can hear
  • 4:19 - 4:20
    the tops back in
  • 4:20 - 4:21
    and you get a pretty
  • 4:21 - 4:23
decent kind of a jazzy sound then
  • 4:31 - 4:33
It's got that kind of mellow tone there
  • 4:33 - 4:36
with the tone backed off a bit
  • 4:37 - 4:39
I'm gonna put the tone right back up to
  • 4:39 - 4:41
full again, so the tone and volume
  • 4:41 - 4:42
    now are full
  • 4:42 - 4:44
If I flick the pickup selector back to
  • 4:44 - 4:46
the back pickup the humbucker pickup
  • 4:46 - 4:47
    it gets really grungy
  • 4:51 - 4:52
if I flick to the front
  • 4:54 - 4:55
    down
  • 4:57 - 4:58
    it's really, it's a super high
  • 4:58 - 4:59
    output pick
  • 5:00 - 5:02
none of my guitars have got that much
  • 5:02 - 5:03
    difference between the two pickups
  • 5:03 - 5:05
which I at first I thought it was
  • 5:05 - 5:06
    a bit not really right
  • 5:06 - 5:08
thinking about it actually if you wanna
  • 5:08 - 5:10
go from a clean sound to a dirty sound
  • 5:10 - 5:12
you can do that just by flicking your
  • 5:12 - 5:14
pickup that's actually a pretty cool thing
  • 5:14 - 5:16
if you got loads of effects for doing
  • 5:16 - 5:17
that then you'll probably use that
  • 5:18 - 5:20
it's quite a nifty little trick to have
  • 5:20 - 5:21
    that much
  • 5:22 - 5:23
    front pickup
  • 5:24 - 5:25
    back pickup
  • 5:26 - 5:28
and to compensate for this a little bit
  • 5:28 - 5:30
    I mentioned before we've got a push-pull
  • 5:30 - 5:31
    tone part
  • 5:31 - 5:33
so if I pull the tone part out a bit
  • 5:33 - 5:35
it splits this humbucker into a single
  • 5:35 - 5:37
    coil and actually I'm certain
  • 5:37 - 5:38
    that's what I was doing
  • 5:38 - 5:40
cause when I pull it up and it's single
  • 5:40 - 5:41
coil I can hear a bit more noise
  • 5:41 - 5:43
through the amplifier from the lights
  • 5:43 - 5:45
cause the lights always have bit of fun
  • 5:45 - 5:47
with single coil pickups, that's all my
  • 5:47 - 5:48
    guitars not just this one
  • 5:48 - 5:50
so you can hear the difference
  • 5:50 - 5:51
    in sound for this
  • 5:53 - 5:54
    really bright
  • 5:55 - 5:57
    there's your humbucker
  • 5:57 - 5:58
    single again
  • 6:00 - 6:01
    humbucker
  • 6:03 - 6:05
a lot more meaty with the humbucker
  • 6:05 - 6:05
    pickup on
  • 6:05 - 6:08
you got a bit of a choice there of what
  • 6:08 - 6:09
    kind of sound you're after
  • 6:17 - 6:18
    that's the humbucker sound
  • 6:18 - 6:20
if we put in on to the single
  • 6:27 - 6:29
it's a lot brighter and crisper sound
  • 6:31 - 6:33
both those tones are really usable sounds
  • 6:33 - 6:35
you got quite a lot of stuff that you
  • 6:35 - 6:36
    can experiment with
  • 6:37 - 6:39
like I said it's got the old tremolo
  • 6:39 - 6:40
    Tremolo on it
  • 6:40 - 6:42
which I don't generally use a tremolo one
  • 6:42 - 6:44
and it was one of the things when he wrote
  • 6:44 - 6:46
to me and asked if I'd like one of these
  • 6:46 - 6:48
guitars, I mentioned that having a tremolo
  • 6:48 - 6:50
would actually be kind of cool
  • 6:50 - 6:52
It has a stop piece, it's kind of a Bigsby
  • 6:52 - 6:53
    style thing
  • 6:54 - 6:56
where the tremolo only goes up yay far
  • 6:56 - 6:58
which I found a little bit weird because
  • 6:58 - 6:59
when I have used a tremolo
  • 6:59 - 7:01
I normally sit in the palm of my hand
  • 7:01 - 7:02
    and move it around
  • 7:02 - 7:04
so that was a little bit odd
  • 7:04 - 7:06
but it's nice and seems to stay pretty
  • 7:06 - 7:08
good in tune cause most of this style of
  • 7:08 - 7:10
tremolo's don't stay in tune so good
  • 7:24 - 7:25
    It's quiet, it's nice
  • 7:25 - 7:27
it can go, you can go silly
  • 7:30 - 7:31
    if you want
  • 7:31 - 7:31
    but it's not
  • 7:33 - 7:35
their not really designed for that
  • 7:35 - 7:37
and when you thrash this type of tremolo
  • 7:37 - 7:39
and really push it in or pull it up
  • 7:39 - 7:40
    too much
  • 7:40 - 7:41
it's almost certainly going to knock
  • 7:41 - 7:42
    your strings out of tune
  • 7:42 - 7:44
on this guitar or any other guitar
  • 7:44 - 7:46
    with this style of tremolo
  • 7:46 - 7:47
    even some really beautiful
  • 7:47 - 7:49
expensive old gretschs that I've played on
  • 7:49 - 7:51
that have got this type of tremolo
  • 7:51 - 7:52
    they don't stay in tune
  • 7:54 - 7:54
    so yeah
  • 7:55 - 7:57
this is the GRB Coco caster
  • 7:58 - 8:00
thanks very much Gordon for donating this
  • 8:00 - 8:01
    it's excellent
  • 8:01 - 8:02
I don't play it all the time
  • 8:02 - 8:04
because I've got some really really
  • 8:04 - 8:06
    beautiful old guitars
  • 8:06 - 8:07
which I kind of prefer playing
  • 8:07 - 8:09
but this had become a keen favorite
  • 8:09 - 8:10
of my students if they don't bring
  • 8:10 - 8:12
their guitar along one time and they need
  • 8:12 - 8:13
    to play a guitar
  • 8:13 - 8:15
this is often the one they choose
  • 8:15 - 8:16
    yeah
  • 8:16 - 8:17
it's a really really cool instrument
  • 8:17 - 8:19
so thank you very much Gordon
  • 8:19 - 8:21
Go and check out their website which is
  • 8:21 - 8:24
    GRBguitars.com
  • 8:24 - 8:25
and go and check it out
  • 8:25 - 8:27
    find a dealer near you
  • 8:27 - 8:29
if you're interested in this kind of thing
  • 8:29 - 8:31
it is a really really well made guitar
  • 8:31 - 8:32
    I'll grab the camera
  • 8:32 - 8:33
off the stand in a second
  • 8:33 - 8:34
show you a few shots of it
  • 8:34 - 8:36
so you can have a look at the close ups
  • 8:37 - 8:38
    and hope you enjoyed that
  • 8:39 - 8:40
    check it out
  • 8:40 - 8:41
I'll see you all again soon
  • 8:41 - 8:42
    for another lesson
  • 8:42 - 8:43
    see you later, bye bye
  • 8:44 - 8:45
    Bridge of the guitar
  • 8:45 - 8:46
    with a tremolo on there
  • 8:47 - 8:49
you can see the humbucking pickup
  • 8:49 - 8:50
    if I bring it down
  • 8:51 - 8:52
    and the lipstick pickup
  • 8:55 - 8:56
    bring it forward again
  • 8:56 - 8:57
    here we go
  • 8:57 - 8:59
you see the nice little inlays
  • 8:59 - 9:01
I think their called shark tooth inlays
  • 9:01 - 9:02
    if we come down here
  • 9:02 - 9:04
    there's some really good detailing
  • 9:04 - 9:06
    on the head stop there
  • 9:06 - 9:09
with this mother of pearly kind of effect
  • 9:09 - 9:10
    on the head stop there
  • 9:10 - 9:12
    there we go GRBguitars
  • 9:12 - 9:13
I wasn't a big fan of the plastic nut
  • 9:13 - 9:15
but I think it's available in bone
  • 9:15 - 9:16
    and other things as well
  • 9:18 - 9:20
    just some regular tuners there
  • 9:20 - 9:23
on the back you can see nice
  • 9:23 - 9:24
    nice quality neck finish
  • 9:24 - 9:26
    kind of washed off there
  • 9:26 - 9:28
well it looks like I got number 26
  • 9:28 - 9:30
cut away to make it a little bit
  • 9:30 - 9:32
easier to play at the back there
  • 9:32 - 9:33
back of the guitar's pretty straight
  • 9:35 - 9:36
    that's it
  • 9:36 - 9:37
    this is your a
  • 9:37 - 9:39
actually it does look really nice
  • 9:39 - 9:39
    doesn't it
  • 9:40 - 9:40
    that's cool
  • 9:40 - 9:41
    oh and
  • 9:41 - 9:43
    here's your push-pull tone
  • 9:43 - 9:44
although I should turn the volume down
  • 9:44 - 9:46
so you can see here that your
  • 9:46 - 9:47
you pull that up to get that
  • 9:47 - 9:48
    single coil sound
  • 9:48 - 9:50
    push it back down
  • 9:50 - 9:51
    you got that humbucker thing
  • 9:51 - 9:52
    it doesn't change when
  • 9:52 - 9:53
    you're on the front pickup
