Bb Collaborate - Introduction to New Format - recording_1

  • 0:02 - 0:05
    Hi, INRW 0340.
  • 0:05 - 0:07
    Welcome back to ACC.
  • 0:07 - 0:13
I hope that you had, was able to relax
    on your extended Spring Break.
  • 0:13 - 0:17
    But now we're back to
    finish out the semester.
  • 0:17 - 0:21
I'm using this medium as a way to
    introduce, the way, um,
  • 0:21 - 0:25
    the structure of the course,
    um, through May.
  • 0:25 - 0:29
Due to the virus that's, you know,
    crippling our country,
  • 0:29 - 0:33
ACC has decided that all courses,
    face-to-face courses, will move online,
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    and so that includes us.
  • 0:35 - 0:40
So I want to kind of cover a
few things that, um, have changed.
  • 0:40 - 0:45
Um, and so you can be mindful
    of that and respond accordingly.
  • 0:45 - 0:48
A couple of days ago, I uploaded
    a revised, uh, syllabi,
  • 0:48 - 0:51
    or syllabus, excuse me, syllabus,
  • 0:51 - 0:55
that outlines some changes that will be
made to your grading, as well as your,
  • 0:55 - 0:59
    um, assignment submissions
    and as far as exams.
  • 0:59 - 1:03
The first thing I want to address
    is, uh, attendance.
  • 1:03 - 1:08
Uh, for this course, prior to Spring Break,
    there was a attendance requirement
  • 1:08 - 1:11
and it was part of your grade.
  • 1:11 - 1:16
Um, but it still stays, up until
Spring Break, but after Spring Break,
  • 1:16 - 1:21
    starting Monday, March the 30th,
the attendance will not be, um,
  • 1:23 - 1:26
calculated the way that it was previously.
  • 1:26 - 1:29
Basically your attendance is just you,
  • 1:29 - 1:32
    is your participation, your
    getting your assignments done
  • 1:32 - 1:36
your checking in, your doing your work,
    that is your participation grade.
  • 1:36 - 1:40
There will be no more attendance
    taking going forward.
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    Another thing is your assignments.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
All of your assignments will be
    submitted through Blackboard.
  • 1:45 - 1:51
I-I do believe, um, 0340, paired with
    Sociology, has had extensive experience
  • 1:51 - 1:55
    with me uploading assignments
    into Blackboard.
  • 1:55 - 2:00
I'm not sure about 0430 with English 1301.
  • 2:00 - 2:04
So you guys will have to reach out
to me if you're having difficulty,
  • 2:04 - 2:07
    not sure how to upload
    assignments in Blackboard,
  • 2:07 - 2:10
and I can do a little,
    mini, um, introduction
  • 2:10 - 2:12
to how to do that as well for you.
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    So just let me know.
  • 2:14 - 2:18
    Another thing that has changed
    is, uh, your exams.
  • 2:18 - 2:19
    Your exams will—
  • 2:19 - 2:23
We have two left in the semester and
they will all be on Blackboard.
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    Uh, they will be timed.
  • 2:25 - 2:28
Most likely they will be open-book.
  • 2:28 - 2:33
Uh, so, you, you, it's good that
    you study, but you will
  • 2:33 - 2:34
have the opportunity to use your notes.
  • 2:34 - 2:39
The longer you're in your notes, the less
time you will have to finish your exam.
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    So take that in consideration.
  • 2:40 - 2:42
So don't just go "I'm not gonna study,
  • 2:42 - 2:43
    I'm not gonna be prepared;
  • 2:43 - 2:46
I'll just use my notes or
books when I get the test."
  • 2:46 - 2:52
Remember, the test is timed, so if
you are constantly looking up things,
  • 2:52 - 2:55
    you're more likely gonna run
out of time to finish your exam.
  • 2:55 - 2:56
And that will count against you.
  • 2:56 - 2:58
So just be mindful of that.
  • 2:58 - 3:04
    Another thing with your assignment
    submission, uh, previously, you had
  • 3:04 - 3:08
an extra day past the due date
    to turn in your assignments,
  • 3:08 - 3:12
because of this changes, because of the
    changes that are happening,
  • 3:12 - 3:15
I've decided to go ahead and
    allow an extra week.
  • 3:15 - 3:18
    And that assignment will be,
there will be a due date,
  • 3:18 - 3:22
and it will be at midnight that you
    have to submit your work.
  • 3:22 - 3:25
It will not be taken after
    that time period.
  • 3:25 - 3:31
So, for instance, if I say the due date
is March the 30th, you have until,
  • 3:31 - 3:36
    I believe it's, uh, April, I think, 7th.
  • 3:37 - 3:40
It's on time March the 30th, but it's late
  • 3:40 - 3:43
between March the 30th and April the 7th.
  • 3:43 - 3:46
    And after April the 7th,
    it will not be accepted.
  • 3:46 - 3:48
So you will have a week to get it done.
  • 3:48 - 3:53
So, and you'll lose 10% or 10 points,
whichever is greater, on the assignment.
  • 3:53 - 3:55
I've outlined that in your syllabus.
  • 3:55 - 3:58
So please take this time to
go ahead and look at it.
  • 3:58 - 4:03
Like I said, it's been updated in the
    Syllabus Textbook section of Blackboard.
  • 4:03 - 4:05
    Um, another thing that has
    changed is, of course,
  • 4:05 - 4:07
how we are going to be communicating
  • 4:07 - 4:11
    with one another.
Since we are not on campus,
  • 4:11 - 4:14
    then, um, email, uh, phone,
    and live streaming
  • 4:14 - 4:17
are going to be our options.
  • 4:17 - 4:20
Uh, please email me, feel free
    to email me, of course.
  • 4:20 - 4:26
Uh, if my response or my reply
    is going to be extensive,
  • 4:26 - 4:28
I'll probably tell you to call me.
  • 4:28 - 4:32
Um, or I could tell you, you know
    these are some dates
  • 4:32 - 4:33
I'm available so we can livestream,
  • 4:33 - 4:36
and we can have this back
    and forth conversation
  • 4:36 - 4:39
    or discussion about your question.
  • 4:39 - 4:43
    Um, I don't, I'm trying to
    avoid sending long emails.
  • 4:43 - 4:46
    Uh, that's very cumbersome
    and time consuming,
  • 4:46 - 4:48
and then you're having to reply
  • 4:48 - 4:51
and then there's a loss in translation
    in terms of understanding
  • 4:51 - 4:52
    what's being said.
  • 4:52 - 4:54
Did we accurately write what we meant?
  • 4:54 - 4:57
So it's a lot, it's going to lead to
a lot of back and forth,
  • 4:57 - 5:00
so I just want to minimize that
    as much as possible.
  • 5:00 - 5:04
So even if you ask me a question and
my reply is going to be extensive,
  • 5:04 - 5:09
I'm going to reach back and say
call me or, you know, log in to, uh,
  • 5:09 - 5:13
    Blackboard collaborate for
    further information.
  • 5:13 - 5:18
    Um, call my office: 512-223-0067.
  • 5:18 - 5:20
Of course I'm not in my office,
    but that number
  • 5:20 - 5:22
has been forwarded to my private number.
  • 5:22 - 5:26
Uh, so I will be more than happy to,
    I'll be answering those.
  • 5:26 - 5:30
If by chance you are reaching out to me
about the phone and I'm not responding,
  • 5:30 - 5:33
then that must be a disconnect with
the phone, so send me an email
  • 5:33 - 5:35
saying hey I've been trying to call you,
  • 5:35 - 5:39
and then we'll, and then we'll
    kind of go from there.
  • 5:39 - 5:43
Um, what I want to emphasize with
    this new format going online,
  • 5:43 - 5:46
is that it's going to require a
    significant amount of self-discipline and
  • 5:46 - 5:49
    a significant amount of self-motivation
  • 5:49 - 5:50
for you to complete the course.
  • 5:50 - 5:54
    Because now, you're no longer
going to a class, coming on campus,
  • 5:54 - 5:57
    walking up the steps,
    going into the classroom.
  • 5:57 - 6:02
You're now going to have to be very
intentional about trying to sit down,
  • 6:02 - 6:07
    read what's available to
    you, since you process that,
  • 6:07 - 6:11
and do the work or reach out for
    questions, and, uh,
  • 6:11 - 6:13
    questions, if you have questions
    or need clarification.
  • 6:13 - 6:15
So it's going to require a lot from you.
  • 6:15 - 6:20
And so the stretching out of the homework
    and those kinds of things,
  • 6:20 - 6:23
I'm hoping is going to help
    with the transition.
  • 6:23 - 6:26
Please don't take advantage of it,
because I will not be able to respond
  • 6:26 - 6:30
to something, um, if you have a
question the night before it's due.
  • 6:30 - 6:31
    That's not gonna work.
  • 6:31 - 6:35
So, it didn't work when we were on campus,
trying to make that happen now
  • 6:35 - 6:39
is almost, is gonna be almost
    impossible to do as well.
  • 6:39 - 6:43
Uh, I do, uh, there was a question
that was brought up to me, uh,
  • 6:43 - 6:47
    with my colleague, um,
    in terms of availability.
  • 6:47 - 6:49
You guys, I'm not available at night.
  • 6:49 - 6:55
So, you know, trying to reach me
after 5:00 is off the table.
  • 6:55 - 7:00
Get me during those office hours,
uh, which are on the syllabus.
  • 7:00 - 7:04
Reach, you can reach me through
my office hours, but I will be responding
  • 7:04 - 7:06
to you beyond the office hours, if I can.
  • 7:06 - 7:09
    But definitely not, you know,
    in the evening.
  • 7:09 - 7:13
Um, so, just because we're online
    doesn't mean I'm, you know, I don't want
  • 7:13 - 7:17
you to think that I'm available 24 hours,
    that's not the case.
  • 7:17 - 7:23
Uh, but I will try to respond to you
timely, you know, timely because I will be
  • 7:23 - 7:26
    sitting and working and doing,
    you know, on the computer.
  • 7:27 - 7:32
Uh, please be, uh, patient with me as
    I'm learning this new medium.
  • 7:32 - 7:38
Um, I'm, this was a severe crash course
in even putting this video together.
  • 7:38 - 7:39
It took me three days to do this.
  • 7:39 - 7:44
Uh, so I'm now trying to figure out how
to edit my videos, so you're probably
  • 7:44 - 7:48
gonna get a lot of stuff you don't want
to hear, or some weird things.
  • 7:48 - 7:51
I apologize to you up front about that.
  • 7:51 - 7:55
Hopefully I'll get better in editing
by the end of the semester.
  • 7:55 - 7:58
If not, we're just, just push through it,
    just push through it,
  • 7:58 - 8:00
cause our goal, our goal and
    objective is to finish
  • 8:00 - 8:02
this semester and finish it successfully.
  • 8:02 - 8:05
Um, if there is a concern
    about your grade,
  • 8:05 - 8:08
all I can tell you is stay on top of it
  • 8:08 - 8:10
    and make an effort.
  • 8:10 - 8:11
    Make an effort.
  • 8:11 - 8:14
Self-discipline is what it's gonna take.
  • 8:14 - 8:15
    And make an effort.
  • 8:15 - 8:19
    Uh, questions, don't, you know,
    don't hesitate to ask.
  • 8:19 - 8:23
I will also, I also encourage you to,
uh, at the beginning of the semester
  • 8:23 - 8:26
I told you about the sending
    an email link in Blackboard,
  • 8:26 - 8:31
on the left side of your screen
    to your classmates or peers,
  • 8:31 - 8:34
I strongly encourage you to communicate
    with one another about,
  • 8:34 - 8:38
    on topics, clarification or
    those kinds of things.
  • 8:38 - 8:41
Don't just feel like I'm the only one
    that can talk to you.
  • 8:41 - 8:42
    I will be available.
  • 8:42 - 8:44
    But, you know, you have
    other sources to use.
  • 8:44 - 8:46
    So please use those.
  • 8:46 - 8:51
Um, prior to the Spring semester,
  • 8:51 - 8:55
we did some extensive note taking on SQ3R
  • 8:55 - 9:00
which is guiding the rest of our
    assignments for the remaining semester.
  • 9:00 - 9:04
It is important that you have those notes
accessible, um, and refer to those notes.
  • 9:04 - 9:08
In addition, we also, you took
    lots of notes weeks
  • 9:08 - 9:11
early on main idea and supporting detail
  • 9:11 - 9:14
    make sure that you have
    access to those as well.
  • 9:14 - 9:19
If you don't, then please use the send
an email link to your peers to get
  • 9:19 - 9:22
    that information because I don't
    have any notes for you.
  • 9:22 - 9:25
You're going to have to reach out
to your peers to get that information.
  • 9:25 - 9:32
Um, I will say that Blackboard will still
be organized in the way its always been.
  • 9:32 - 9:36
The current, because what we're talking
about now, if you need anything
  • 9:36 - 9:39
that happened a week ago, previous week,
then you're going to have to go
  • 9:39 - 9:43
    to the previous folder, previous
week folder, open it up, and then search
  • 9:43 - 9:46
for the information you're looking for.
  • 9:46 - 9:49
So I'm trying to keep that as,
    um, familiar as possible.
  • 9:49 - 9:53
    Uh, these are trying times,
    but we can do this.
  • 9:53 - 9:54
    We will do this.
  • 9:54 - 9:57
Um, I'm very confident in what you can do.
  • 9:57 - 9:58
I'm very confident in what I can do.
  • 9:58 - 10:01
And between the both of us, this is,
we're gonna end this on a high note.
  • 10:01 - 10:06
Again if you have any questions,
    please reach out and ask.
  • 10:06 - 10:11
    But, uh, practice, uh,
    good social distancing.
  • 10:11 - 10:12
    Stay safe.
  • 10:12 - 10:12
    Stay healthy.
  • 10:12 - 10:15
Get out and breathe some fresh air.
  • 10:15 - 10:18
Get some exercise when you can.
  • 10:18 - 10:19
    Thank you so much.
  • 10:19 - 10:23
And I look forward to visiting
with you in the near future.
  • 10:23 - 10:24
    Thank you.
