  • Not Synced
June Legg: I was at nurse in [?] hospital.
  • Not Synced
We were all asked if we would like
    to help out,
  • Not Synced
and my children were the same age
  • Not Synced
    as the ones that were...
  • Not Synced
    were trapped,
  • Not Synced
    in the school.
  • Not Synced
And I didn't know if I could do it.
  • Not Synced
    I wanted to help, but I -- I
  • Not Synced
    just couldn't.
  • Not Synced
And the nurse said, well, she said,
  • Not Synced
    "Think that at least
    the mothers will know
  • Not Synced
    that you're doing...
  • Not Synced
    [whispers]
you'll be doing it for them.
  • Not Synced
    For the children, as well."
  • Not Synced
    And, uh...
  • Not Synced
    I realized, after, yes.
  • Not Synced
    But, I -- I'm glad
    that she said that,
  • Not Synced
    because I had thought
  • Not Synced
that I would just break down,
  • Not Synced
    but, uh...
  • Not Synced
    we went over to Aberfan.
  • Not Synced
We were all posted up on the tip.
  • Not Synced
    And we were told,
    when the Klaxon horn went,
  • Not Synced
    to move.
  • Not Synced
    And we were there,
we had a few minor injuries.
  • Not Synced
And then, the Klaxon horn went.
  • Not Synced
    And we went down to
    an old chapel,
  • Not Synced
    by the river,
  • Not Synced
and we were all getting ready
    to help out there,
  • Not Synced
and we had the cover to move,
  • Not Synced
because the river was flooding in.
  • Not Synced
    So, off we went again,
  • Not Synced
    and, somehow,
I got lost from all the rest,
  • Not Synced
    and eventually, I found them.
  • Not Synced
    They were all being taken
  • Not Synced
    in the ambulance,
    for exposure.
  • Not Synced
    because they only had
    their uniforms on.
  • Not Synced
So, so they were taken back,
  • Not Synced
    and I was left there.
  • Not Synced
I was going to meet my husband,
  • Not Synced
because he was in the police force.
  • Not Synced
    He was there as well.
  • Not Synced
    Eventually, I found
    our little mini car,
  • Not Synced
    and my husband came,
    thank goodness.
  • Not Synced
    And everywhere seemed to me
    to be black.
  • Not Synced
    Absolutely, it was pouring
and it was like black rain.
  • Not Synced
    There was a little road
    beside a canal,
  • Not Synced
    one drop on one side
and the canal on the other,
  • Not Synced
    And luckily, we've been rallying,
  • Not Synced
    so we were able
    to follow the road,
  • Not Synced
    and we arrived safely home.
  • Not Synced
    But I'll never forget.
  • Not Synced
    Never forget that.
  • Not Synced
i was just glad, in a way,
  • Not Synced
    that I didn't have to
    see any of the children,
  • Not Synced
    but I was there ready,
    if needed.
  • Not Synced
    [Sad instrumental music.]
