OTP volunteer talks about why transcribing TEDx talks is important

  • 0:00 - 0:01
    My name is Bob Prottas.
  • 0:01 - 0:04
    I'm from Trumbull, Connecticut,
    in the United States.
  • 0:04 - 0:07
I'm here at the TEDActive Conference 2015.
  • 0:07 - 0:10
I used to be a chemist
    with DuPont for 27 years,
  • 0:10 - 0:12
and four years ago I retired.
  • 0:12 - 0:15
    My oldest son is deaf
and he was adopted from Korea,
  • 0:15 - 0:18
    and I remember watching
TV shows with him with the subtitles,
  • 0:18 - 0:22
    and I thought, "You know,
    it's nice having subtitles."
  • 0:22 - 0:26
I saw it as my mission
    to subtitle these TED talks,
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    so the Deaf and hard-of-hearing
    could see them,
  • 0:28 - 0:31
    and then I learned
    about the whole translation project,
  • 0:31 - 0:34
    where they translate the subtitles
    into other languages.
  • 0:34 - 0:37
    I take an English talk
    and add subtitles in English.
  • 0:37 - 0:39
Well, then they can take those subtitles
  • 0:39 - 0:41
and turn them into different languages,
  • 0:41 - 0:44
so people all over the world
    can view these,
  • 0:44 - 0:45
and read them in their own language,
  • 0:45 - 0:47
which I think is pretty impressive.
  • 0:48 - 0:50
There are so many talks to choose from,
  • 0:50 - 0:54
that you've got to wonder where to start.
  • 0:54 - 0:55
And the beauty of it is,
  • 0:55 - 0:58
    there's the TED organization,
    which really promotes a lot.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
But then there are a lot of TEDx talks,
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    and they're like pearls --
    like diamonds in the rough.
  • 1:03 - 1:04
    It's really pretty exciting;
  • 1:04 - 1:06
you've got this much broader audience.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
A little effort on my part goes a long way
  • 1:09 - 1:12
to make this a worldwide phenomenon.
  • 1:12 - 1:13
    I like that.
