    Translation & Subtitles: thoseguiltyeyes | scandal-heaven.com
Today's video is being brought to you from the rehearsal studio.
  • 0:04 - 0:08
I'm at the studio for solo practice today.
  • 0:08 - 0:10
    As usual...
  • 0:10 - 0:12
    Oh wait, is this working?
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    Not sure if it is.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    I'll get things set up.
  • 0:22 - 0:31
For years now, the four of us have been rehearsing every Wednesday,
  • 0:32 - 0:35
but today I'll be practicing by myself.
  • 0:36 - 0:38
When the four of us practice...
  • 0:39 - 0:44
We practice songs we want to go over.
  • 0:46 - 0:52
We do things that the four of us need to do together.
  • 0:53 - 1:00
It feels different to use your time as you'd like when you practice alone.
  • 1:03 - 1:09
I'm out of breath, even though I haven't done anything.
  • 1:17 - 1:20
I can't decide at all which angle to go with.
  • 1:22 - 1:24
Maybe I'll leave my face out of frame.
    (I will)
  • 1:25 - 1:26
    First...
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    The first thing I'll do...
  • 1:30 - 1:33
is to put my twin pedals together.
  • 1:37 - 1:40
I've been using twin pedals for several years now.
  • 1:41 - 1:52
I don't really use them a lot during songs, especially intense ones, though.
  • 1:55 - 2:00
Since we have a lot of fast songs,
  • 2:02 - 2:06
I use them mainly to do fills.
  • 2:08 - 2:15
Also, it's really tough to make loud sounds with just one leg.
  • 2:15 - 2:20
    Twin pedals help.
  • 2:25 - 2:27
I have a lot of things at my feet.
  • 2:28 - 2:31
My set is pretty spread out.
  • 2:33 - 2:36
I actually don't want it to be too crowded up top.
  • 2:36 - 2:40
I don't want it to look too crazy, visually.
  • 2:42 - 2:50
Earlier, HARU and I did a live radio appearance from home,
  • 2:50 - 2:52
    for a Hiroshima radio station.
  • 2:52 - 2:53
It was a lot of fun.
  • 2:53 - 2:55
It went by in a flash.
  • 2:58 - 3:02
Doing remote radio appearances has become the norm now.
  • 3:02 - 3:06
It's amazing how fast humans get used to things.
  • 3:14 - 3:18
    My unskillfulness is being exposed.
  • 3:23 - 3:25
    Is this angle working out?
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    In the beginning,
  • 3:29 - 3:32
    like I didn't...
  • 3:33 - 3:43
I really didn't know what kind of setup would suit me.
  • 3:44 - 3:46
I always had it done for me,
  • 3:46 - 3:49
though I did have them teach me about it.
  • 3:51 - 3:52
    But little by little,
  • 3:52 - 3:58
I started to learn what setup suited me and what sounds were necessary.
  • 4:00 - 4:06
That's why I think one of interesting things about drums
  • 4:06 - 4:10
is that you can customize it to your own settings more and more.
  • 4:10 - 4:12
You can do that for the guitar as well.
  • 4:14 - 4:16
Since this is set up now,
  • 4:18 - 4:21
I'll be putting these at my feet.
  • 4:25 - 4:27
This is what I do on tour:
  • 4:27 - 4:30
    I take this pedal
  • 4:33 - 4:36
and put in the pedals I just put together.
  • 4:41 - 4:43
Since I use only one tom drum,
  • 4:43 - 4:45
I will be taking off this other one.
  • 4:46 - 4:52
I'm borrowing these drums from the studio.
  • 4:52 - 4:54
    They're not Pearl drums.
  • 4:54 - 4:58
Will they get mad at me for that?
  • 4:58 - 5:04
I of course use Pearl drums when playing live.
    (Desperately doing a follow-up)
  • 5:06 - 5:09
    I sometimes gets comments like,
  • 5:10 - 5:16
"I want to start playing drums. What should I be doing?"
  • 5:16 - 5:23
It's true that it's really hard to know what to do in the beginning.
  • 5:23 - 5:27
When I started, I didn't have anyone teach me,
  • 5:27 - 5:31
nor did I take a class for it.
  • 5:32 - 5:37
That's why I really understand not knowing what to do.
  • 5:38 - 5:41
At any rate, just try a few out.
  • 5:41 - 5:44
    I'm filming right now, but...
  • 5:45 - 5:46
    Like...
  • 5:47 - 5:52
There are times when this instrument feels like an uphill struggle,
  • 5:52 - 5:54
not knowing what's best to do.
  • 5:55 - 5:57
    But that uphill struggle...
  • 5:57 - 5:59
    Hold on...
  • 6:00 - 6:02
    I'm out of breath.
  • 6:02 - 6:04
It might be better to pull back a bit.
  • 6:04 - 6:06
    Or rather...
  • 6:06 - 6:09
You'll be like, "Oh, that's how it is."
  • 6:10 - 6:12
    In the beginning,
  • 6:12 - 6:17
when I first played drums in the studio alone after the band formed,
  • 6:17 - 6:21
I was really surprised at how loud it was.
  • 6:22 - 6:27
I was making those noises myself,
  • 6:27 - 6:31
but it was so intense and resonated within me.
  • 6:31 - 6:35
I felt a little embarrassed to be playing such loud sounds.
  • 6:35 - 6:37
    I vividly remember that.
  • 6:37 - 6:39
That was at a studio in Osaka.
  • 6:39 - 6:43
Like, I couldn't drum well and...
  • 6:44 - 6:51
I was embarrassed to be playing such awkward rhythms.
  • 6:52 - 6:54
But I think that by playing the drums,
  • 6:54 - 6:59
you'll know right away if it's the instrument for you or not.
  • 7:02 - 7:11
It'd be nice if those who'd like to try it out just go ahead and do so.
  • 7:14 - 7:19
There's really no right or wrong answer for setting your drums,
  • 7:19 - 7:22
so if you feel good with it,
  • 7:22 - 7:24
or it feels like it's easier to drum,
  • 7:24 - 7:26
    or it suits your height...
  • 7:26 - 7:33
    Just go with your intuition.
  • 7:33 - 7:36
Change things little by little and adjust them.
  • 7:36 - 7:38
    First, for me...
  • 7:39 - 7:41
I guess I'll just go with whatever the person before me set it as.
  • 7:41 - 7:44
I don't get this at all.
  • 7:44 - 7:47
But I think things like that are completely fine.
  • 7:47 - 7:49
It's okay to do whatever you want.
  • 7:53 - 8:00
You'll learn things like at what height is it easier for you to hit the cymbals.
  • 8:01 - 8:03
So it's totally fine [to do whatever you'd like].
  • 8:03 - 8:05
    The seat's too high.
  • 8:06 - 8:08
    This is so difficult!
  • 8:08 - 8:11
Things like that are typical when setting up,
  • 8:11 - 8:14
    but like...
  • 8:14 - 8:19
The part you have to twist is really tough.
  • 8:20 - 8:27
Like, what height was the person who used this before me?
  • 8:27 - 8:30
Though this is a typical thing.
  • 8:30 - 8:34
    They're usually up really high.
  • 8:34 - 8:36
    It's not coming out.
  • 8:42 - 8:45
I'm going to turn the snare a little towards me.
  • 8:48 - 8:52
This isn't my own set, so all the sizes are different.
  • 8:54 - 8:56
    Maybe like this.
  • 8:59 - 9:01
    I'm using my own drumsticks.
  • 9:06 - 9:10
    (Adjusting what I need to)
  • 9:10 - 9:15
I bought a tripod with me, but it's really hard to see from this angle.
  • 9:16 - 9:18
I don't really know what to do.
  • 9:18 - 9:20
    I apologize for that.
  • 9:20 - 9:22
    It's kind of dark.
  • 9:26 - 9:28
(Can't believe it gets even darker)
  • 9:30 - 9:32
    Is this going to work?
  • 9:32 - 9:37
Tuning...I think tuning is really hard in the beginning.
  • 9:37 - 9:42
I really didn't know what to do.
  • 9:42 - 9:44
The screen's pitch black. Oh well.
  • 9:46 - 9:50
We formed in Kyobashi, Osaka, and always rehearsed there.
  • 9:50 - 9:55
There were musicians playing on the street in front of the station in Kyobashi,
  • 9:55 - 10:01
and I remember asking them what they do for tuning.
  • 10:01 - 10:03
    That was so crazy.
  • 10:04 - 10:06
They were probably surprised to be asked that.
  • 10:07 - 10:11
They kindly said that it's different for each person,
  • 10:11 - 10:15
and to just do it as you'd like.
  • 10:15 - 10:17
    That definitely is true.
  • 10:18 - 10:21
It's a little too dark here.
  • 10:23 - 10:28
I think it's totally fine to do tuning first.
  • 10:37 - 10:41
Totally by intuition, I'm doing things like tightening things,
  • 10:41 - 10:43
    raising the pitch...
  • 10:44 - 10:48
For me, when we play concerts, my roadie sets up all the sounds
  • 10:48 - 10:50
and I just play the drums after that.
  • 10:51 - 10:52
In the beginning, I really didn't know what to do.
  • 10:52 - 10:56
    I'd practice without tuning anything.
  • 10:56 - 11:00
Little by little I began to learn things
  • 11:00 - 11:07
like sounds that would clash with HARU's singing.
  • 11:07 - 11:13
If you stick to something, you can pursue it endlessly.
  • 11:13 - 11:18
When you first start out, don't overthink too much.
  • 11:19 - 11:20
    Just go with your gut.
  • 11:20 - 11:23
If you don't know what to do,
  • 11:23 - 11:28
just go with the same tuning that the person before you at the studio had.
  • 11:28 - 11:34
You'll get a grasp on things intuitively.
  • 11:34 - 11:41
I've gotten DMs asking me what they should practice first.
  • 11:42 - 11:45
First... What did I do at first?
  • 11:45 - 11:49
Maybe I learned to play an eight-beat rhythm.
  • 11:49 - 11:50
    It's really like this...
  • 11:52 - 11:54
Just tap it with your right hand.
  • 11:54 - 11:56
Start off with just your right hand.
  • 11:59 - 12:04
    One, two, three, four.
  • 12:04 - 12:07
That's it. Just keep doing that.
  • 12:07 - 12:10
Then on the first beat, add in the kick drum.
  • 12:10 - 12:14
    One, two, three, four.
  • 12:14 - 12:15
    That's it.
  • 12:19 - 12:23
Then on three, add the snare.
  • 12:23 - 12:28
    One, two, three, four.
  • 12:32 - 12:39
I think this was the first thing I tried learning.
  • 12:39 - 12:42
Split them up. Just focus on one at a time.
  • 12:42 - 12:45
    Add each little by little.
  • 12:45 - 12:48
I think that's a good way to go about it.
  • 12:49 - 12:51
This has become more of a lesson.
  • 12:52 - 12:54
I can't explain things well at all,
  • 12:54 - 12:57
so this might be hard to understand.
  • 12:57 - 13:00
So yeah, this is what it's like at first.
  • 13:00 - 13:03
Now let's add in some kicks.
  • 13:03 - 13:06
Do that one, two, three, four...
  • 13:08 - 13:10
That might be hard to follow.
  • 13:20 - 13:24
And then add in two kicks.
  • 13:24 - 13:30
Keep repeating simple things like that in the beginning,
  • 13:30 - 13:33
and I think you'll have fun.
  • 13:33 - 13:36
    That's how I started out,
  • 13:36 - 13:39
and I think it's probably the same for everyone else.
  • 13:39 - 13:41
There are days when you can't do something
  • 13:41 - 13:45
but then will be able to do it the next day.
  • 13:45 - 13:48
I think doing things like this would be best
  • 13:48 - 13:51
so that you can continue doing so for a long time without coming to dislike it.
  • 13:52 - 13:53
Keep doing it until you're able to do it.
  • 13:53 - 13:56
    Everyone is definitely able to.
  • 13:56 - 14:00
Repeating things little by little is good.
  • 14:01 - 14:03
    That's about it for today.
  • 14:03 - 14:08
Since I came here to practice...
  • 14:10 - 14:15
I'll be drumming while playing along to the recorded songs,
  • 14:15 - 14:19
and will be doing that until I get it right.
  • 14:19 - 14:23
That's largely how I spend my solo practices.
  • 14:25 - 14:31
I can't post videos of me drumming [to our songs] on YouTube.
  • 14:32 - 14:34
It has to do with copyrights.
  • 14:34 - 14:37
A little while ago during rehearsals,
  • 14:37 - 14:43
I was recording for YouTube and thought it'd be okay to include some of the song,
  • 14:43 - 14:46
but in the end [YouTube] got mad at me for that.
  • 14:46 - 14:50
I'm being tripped up by our own copyright.
  • 14:50 - 14:53
But that is an important thing.
  • 14:55 - 15:03
Please come out to a concert and enjoy my playing in person!
  • 15:04 - 15:12
So yeah, today's vlog was about me going to the studio to do solo practice.
  • 15:12 - 15:15
It would make me happy if those starting out drums
  • 15:15 - 15:22
found this video enjoyable, and that it'll help them continue playing for a long time.
  • 15:22 - 15:25
You'll be fine--you'll totally be able to do it.
  • 15:25 - 15:28
If you stick with it, you'll be able to do anything.
  • 15:29 - 15:34
We're playing concerts in Fukuoka and Hiroshima this weekend.
  • 15:34 - 15:35
I'm really looking forward to them.
  • 15:35 - 15:39
I love both of those cities, so I'm really happy.
  • 15:39 - 15:42
If you'd like to see us and come out to a concert,
  • 15:42 - 15:45
and it fits in with your schedule,
  • 15:45 - 15:49
I'd love for you to come out.
  • 15:50 - 15:51
    Let's see each other!
  • 15:51 - 15:52
    We'll be waiting!
  • 15:53 - 15:57
    That's it for today's video.
  • 15:57 - 16:00
Thanks for watching until the end!
  • 16:00 - 16:04
See you at the venues! Bye bye!
