More Precise UN Estimates of the Future World Population - Rosling's Factpod #3

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    Hi. I'm Professor Hans Rosling.
  • 0:03 - 0:05
    I'm very interested
    in the world population,
  • 0:05 - 0:08
    therefore I read
    everything that comes out
  • 0:08 - 0:10
    of United Nations Population Division.
  • 0:10 - 0:12
This week they published a paper
  • 0:12 - 0:15
about the uncertainty of their estimate
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    of the future world population.
  • 0:17 - 0:19
This is a graph from that paper.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
It shows the total world population
    in billions,
  • 0:21 - 0:25
    from 2 billions,
    10 billions, or even more.
  • 0:25 - 0:28
Here are the years, starting 1950
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    (with less than 3 billion),
  • 0:30 - 0:32
and their estimate of past population
  • 0:32 - 0:36
went up to 7.2 billions today, 2014.
  • 0:36 - 0:38
Now, the projection into the future.
  • 0:38 - 0:43
Starting on 7.2 billion today, going fast,
  • 0:43 - 0:46
and then slowing, slowing, slowing down,
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    and almost flat here
  • 0:48 - 0:51
    at almost 11 billion
by the end of the century.
  • 0:51 - 0:53
The red line has been published before.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
    The new with this study
  • 0:55 - 0:57
is that they have improved the estimate
  • 0:57 - 0:59
    of the uncertainty.
  • 0:59 - 1:01
They used to just assume here a line
  • 1:01 - 1:04
for half a child more per woman,
  • 1:04 - 1:06
half a child less per woman.
  • 1:06 - 1:09
    Now they tell us
    with 80 percent probability
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    somewhere between these two lines,
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    with 95 percent probability
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    between these two lines.
  • 1:15 - 1:19
    So somewhere between
    9 billion and 13 billion,
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    most probably 11 billion,
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    that's the world population
    we have to plan for.
