Documenting the unseen Taiwan from the clouds - Po-lin Chi at TEDxTaipeiChange

  • 0:15 - 0:18
    Good afternoon, friends.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
I'm glad to be here again
  • 0:22 - 0:26
to share something that I've worked on
    for the past 20 years.
  • 0:26 - 0:29
    I'm an aerial photographer,
  • 0:29 - 0:32
someone who works above the cloud.
  • 0:32 - 0:35
    (Laughter) (Applause)
  • 0:37 - 0:39
I have also been inside the cloud.
  • 0:39 - 0:43
Though being in the cloud while flying
    is very dangerous.
  • 0:46 - 0:51
    My way of seeing Taiwan
    might be different from yours
  • 0:51 - 0:54
since I stand at different altitudes
with a different point of view.
  • 0:54 - 0:58
    I don't have any way
to avoid the dark side of Taiwan,
  • 0:58 - 1:02
but I believe that the people of Taiwan
have worked hard on this land
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    in the past 50 years.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
People have put forth a lot of effort.
  • 1:07 - 1:12
However, we have ignored the care
of our environment during this process.
  • 1:12 - 1:16
I saw many parts of Taiwan
    during my flights,
  • 1:16 - 1:19
    often those parts
that will be missed if lost.
  • 1:19 - 1:23
That's the reason why I decided
to start a project 10 years ago:
  • 1:23 - 1:26
    To record Taiwan.
  • 1:26 - 1:31
I wanted to tell everyone from Taiwan
    what I've seen and known.
  • 1:31 - 1:34
But it was not a smooth
    beginning for this project.
  • 1:34 - 1:38
    Because I published my
    photographs through a blog,
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    its influence was slow.
  • 1:40 - 1:43
    Fortunately, I had an opportunity
    to express my perspective
  • 1:43 - 1:46
    at last year's TEDx.
  • 1:46 - 1:50
And my friends at TEDx have provided
tremendous mental support this past year.
  • 1:50 - 1:53
    (Applause)
  • 1:53 - 1:57
But I still needed more tangible support
  • 1:57 - 2:00
    to complete this project successfully.
  • 2:02 - 2:07
    We obtained supprt from
    Delta Electronics Foundation last year
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    since we have common missions.
  • 2:11 - 2:13
    With their support,
  • 2:13 - 2:15
    we shot a series of
    aerial photographs of Taiwan.
  • 2:15 - 2:19
Now, I would like to share some of them.
  • 2:19 - 2:22
We edited a 3-minute short video for TEDx
  • 2:22 - 2:25
to give everyone a sneak peek.
  • 2:27 - 2:31
    [Through the clouds: Meeting. Formosa.
    The beautiful island.]
  • 2:35 - 2:39
    [Splendid, but fragile.]
  • 2:59 - 3:03
[The sinews of the earth is a masterpiece
    molded by the passing years.]
  • 3:07 - 3:11
    [Memories of glaciers;
    Await, and listening.]
  • 3:18 - 3:22
    [Unexpected moments, become legends.]
  • 3:31 - 3:35
    [Inseparable lives,
    linked with one and other.]
  • 3:40 - 3:43
    [A showcase of talents
    on the stage of survival.]
  • 3:44 - 3:48
    [We have demanded everything
    of the Earth.]
  • 4:10 - 4:13
    [But when the test comes,
    do we believe in ourselves
  • 4:13 - 4:16
    or rely on our deities?]
  • 4:27 - 4:29
    [What drives us
  • 4:29 - 4:33
in our unquenchable desire to pursue?]
  • 4:33 - 4:37
    [From the vision of cities
    we derive our desires;
  • 4:41 - 4:45
from the surge we recover our power.]
  • 4:45 - 4:48
    [This is our common story.]
  • 4:48 - 4:50
    [Supervised and produced
    by Hsiao-Hsien Hou]
  • 4:50 - 4:53
    [Aerial photography by Po-Lin Chi,
his debut on the silver screen.]
  • 4:53 - 4:56
    [Co-directed by environmental writer
    Chin-Huei Fan.]
  • 5:05 - 5:08
    [The first aerial photography
    documentary of Taiwan.]
  • 5:20 - 5:24
    [2013.
Inviting you care for Taiwan together.]
  • 5:26 - 5:29
Po-lin Chi: The effect of Delta projector
    is not bad, huh?
  • 5:29 - 5:31
    (Applause)
  • 5:31 - 5:35
    But the computer playing speed
    was a tad slow.
  • 5:37 - 5:43
In the past year, I observed the lives
of the commonest of people in Taiwan.
  • 5:43 - 5:48
    I began documenting a series
of folk cultural activities since March.
  • 5:48 - 5:53
We've experienced and recorded first hand
    all the bustling excitement.
  • 5:53 - 5:57
Our hope is that through our photography,
  • 5:57 - 6:01
    we can tell the story
of the unknown parts of Taiwan.
  • 6:01 - 6:05
I want to be your eyes
to see Taiwan from the sky.
  • 6:05 - 6:10
We are hoping that this series of movies
    will be published next year.
  • 6:10 - 6:14
We have a warm-up event in advance:
  • 6:14 - 6:18
    from May 31st
to the end of November, 2013.
  • 6:18 - 6:20
    in cooperation with Delta electronics
  • 6:20 - 6:23
we will hold a large scale
    bird's eye view exhibition
  • 6:23 - 6:25
    at the National Taiwan
    Science Education Center
  • 6:25 - 6:28
using mixed media to present Taiwan.
  • 6:28 - 6:32
    We hope you will all
have a chance to see it.
  • 6:33 - 6:37
And it is thanks to the wealth
of attention and support on this project
  • 6:37 - 6:40
that we have the power to keep going.
  • 6:40 - 6:45
    Although this is a huge
personal dream and idea of mine,
  • 6:48 - 6:53
    I believe that every Taiwanese
    should have a common vision:
  • 6:54 - 6:56
    that Taiwan will be better.
  • 6:56 - 6:58
    It is with your participation,
  • 6:58 - 7:01
    and by fostering a friendlier
    attitude towards the Earth,
  • 7:01 - 7:04
    that Taiwan will have
a chance at a better tomorrow.
  • 7:04 - 7:07
It is also our hope that
    by getting to know Taiwan,
  • 7:07 - 7:11
we will all grow to protect it,
    and treasure it.
  • 7:11 - 7:14
    Thank you.
    (Applause)
Title:
Documenting the unseen Taiwan from the clouds - Po-lin Chi at TEDxTaipeiChange
Description:

During the past 20 years, Po-lin Chi has documented the beauty of Taiwan through his lens in the sky, as well as the change in Taiwan's mountains, forests and streams. With higher altitude and a different perspective comes clarity. While the beauty of the island is captured, the scars upon the land are also vividly seen.
