Greatness in failure | Matthew Whipple | TEDxYouth@ParkCity

  • 0:04 - 0:07
    Failure. It's a word
that can be represented in many ways.
  • 0:07 - 0:10
    It can describe a person;
    it can describe a group;
  • 0:10 - 0:13
it can describe everyone in this room.
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    Everyone has failed;
    most have gotten back up.
  • 0:15 - 0:19
But it's a few that try harder
    and do whatever they can
  • 0:19 - 0:23
and won't stop until they have passed
    what they have failed.
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    That is truly great.
  • 0:26 - 0:29
    True success is never
    giving in to failure.
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    George Patton said,
  • 0:32 - 0:36
    "I won't ever measure a man's success
on how well he can climb a ladder,
  • 0:36 - 0:40
but I will on how high he bounces back up
    when he hits the bottom."
  • 0:41 - 0:45
Whether it's getting an A on a big test,
    not making the team,
  • 0:45 - 0:47
or not getting the job of your dreams,
  • 0:47 - 0:52
those are just three out of thousands
of millions of ways that you can fail.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
    Sir Winston Churchill said,
  • 0:55 - 1:00
    "Success consists of moving
    from failure to failure
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    without loss of enthusiasm."
  • 1:03 - 1:06
Thomas Edison is a great example of this.
  • 1:06 - 1:10
He had failed over and over and over again
  • 1:10 - 1:13
    before creating
    the first working light bulb.
  • 1:14 - 1:16
But he states, "I have not failed,
  • 1:17 - 1:20
I have just found 1000 ways
    that wouldn't work."
  • 1:21 - 1:25
    Even though no one thought
it was possible to create what he created,
  • 1:25 - 1:28
he still was determined to not stop
  • 1:29 - 1:33
till he created the first light bulb.
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    Failure was the path
  • 1:36 - 1:38
    to one of the greatest
    inventions in history.
  • 1:39 - 1:43
    Oftentimes, failure
    is the beginning of greatness.
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    Michael Jordan stated,
  • 1:46 - 1:51
"I have failed over and over
and over again in my life,
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    and that's why I succeed."
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    When he first didn't make
    his high school varsity team,
  • 1:57 - 1:59
and was told he wasn't good enough,
  • 1:59 - 2:01
he still put in the extra hours.
  • 2:01 - 2:05
    Greatness is the things
    that people don't necessarily see.
  • 2:05 - 2:07
It's the hours in the gym by yourself.
  • 2:07 - 2:09
    That described Michael Jordan
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    and his journey to get
    to where he is today.
  • 2:13 - 2:17
He was one of the few people
    that was passionate enough
  • 2:17 - 2:21
and would do whatever he could
to be able to get better.
  • 2:23 - 2:26
    Failure fueled his desire
  • 2:26 - 2:29
to be one of the greatest
    basketball players of all time.
  • 2:30 - 2:33
    Everyone has a different
    representation on success,
  • 2:33 - 2:35
but I will leave you with mine.
  • 2:36 - 2:40
I think it is when you hit a wall,
the good stand back and think
  • 2:40 - 2:44
    while the great plow through,
    go under, climb over,
  • 2:44 - 2:49
and won't rest until they have passed
    the obstacle in their way.
  • 2:50 - 2:51
    Thank you.
  • 2:51 - 2:54
    (Applause) (Cheers)
