Traffic Report: a Deep West Video by Carolyn & Linda Dufurrena
-
0:04 - 0:06Radio reporter: ...in a stalled car
on the causeway -
0:07 - 0:09and that was really starting
to back up traffic. -
0:09 - 0:12Leaving Hayward, let's go
to KGO's Michaelyn in jet copter 810. -
0:12 - 0:14Michaelyn Meyers: Jet copter
over the scene -
0:14 - 0:17as the orange tow truck
pulled that thing out of the right lane, -
0:17 - 0:20now you have a back-up at the westbound
San-Mateo Bridge toll plaza -
0:21 - 0:22that is a little more than a quarter mile
-
0:23 - 0:25once you get past
one mile past the toll plaza, -
0:25 - 0:27you're going to zoom
right over to San Mateo. -
0:27 - 0:30I'm Michaelyn, KGO, jet copter 810.
-
0:30 - 0:32OK, thank you, we're going to go
to Dave Callahan here -
0:32 - 0:35he's going to be talking
on our Diablo repeater, -
0:35 - 0:39and Dave has been checking out
Contra Costa county highways 4 and 680. -
0:39 - 0:42Dave Callahan: Yeah, highway 4
backs up from just before Somersville -
0:42 - 0:46pass the railroad 242 in [unclear]
backed up one mile on the 680 -
0:46 - 0:48and 680 - ooh, it's backed up
from [unclear]. -
0:49 - 0:50Reporter: Alright, thank you Dave.
-
0:50 - 0:54Heavy traffic is starting to build up now
behind the Bay Bridge toll plaza -
0:54 - 0:56although it shouldn't be more
than about a 10 minute wait -
0:56 - 0:58immediately behind the cash box.
-
0:58 - 1:01And the highway 24 was backed-up
towards children's hospital -
1:01 - 1:02for that westbound drive.
-
1:02 - 1:06Taking a look at the peninsula right now,
we have KGO's Mike Zanda. -
1:06 - 1:07MZ: We have that big rig crash
-
1:07 - 1:10on the ramp from eastbound 380
to South 101 -
1:10 - 1:12it's still there causing a minor delay
-
1:12 - 1:15no further problems past the airport
all the way down to peninsula -
1:15 - 1:16to Redwood City.
-
1:16 - 1:19R: So 101, at least into San Mateo
looks pretty good right now -
1:19 - 1:21coming the way from San Francisco airport
-
1:21 - 1:24we've had no new accidents reported
for the South Bay. -
1:24 - 1:28I'm Lin Durling with traffic on the 8
every 10 minutes on KGO Newstalk 810. -
1:28 - 1:32(Music)
-
1:33 - 1:35Carolyn Dufurrena:
Highway 140 Traffic report. -
1:37 - 1:40As I listen to the radio on my way
to school in the morning, -
1:40 - 1:42I can't help but be grateful
-
1:42 - 1:45that I'm not stuck in the pile-up
on the westbound San Mateo. -
1:45 - 1:48Or in the slow-down on eastbound 680.
-
1:48 - 1:51Six lanes of hybrid SUVs and big rigs
-
1:51 - 1:54idling with frustrated drivers
behind the wheel, -
1:54 - 1:57just isn't my idea of a pleasant morning.
-
1:59 - 2:02Traffic is a fact of life
in urban America, -
2:02 - 2:04something people just put up with.
-
2:04 - 2:07Like taking your shoes off
before you get on a plane. -
2:08 - 2:10Something someone
should figure out how to fix. -
2:12 - 2:14Out here, the roads are mostly empty.
-
2:15 - 2:17There's a lot more scenery
than clutter on the horizon. -
2:18 - 2:21And I can actually see
the horizon most of the time. -
2:22 - 2:25A pilot friend of mine described
driving through the desert this way: -
2:25 - 2:27In Nevada, he said,
-
2:27 - 2:29you figure out how many
miles you have to go -
2:29 - 2:31look at the time you have to get there
-
2:31 - 2:33and adjust your speed accordingly.
-
2:35 - 2:38Traffic, the way you
think of it is not an issue. -
2:38 - 2:39Usually.
-
2:41 - 2:43In my corner of the world,
-
2:43 - 2:45traffic is six sets of headlights
-
2:45 - 2:49in the forty-mile stretch
that takes me across the Sod House flat -
2:49 - 2:52as I make the turn
from Highway 95 onto 140. -
2:53 - 2:56Traffic is when I follow a handful
of pick-ups and mini-vans -
2:56 - 2:58to a school program
-
2:58 - 3:00and I pretty much know
who's in every vehicle. -
3:02 - 3:04Once, on a way to a local gathering
-
3:04 - 3:07we were stopped by our friendly
neighborhood highway patrolman -
3:07 - 3:10who noticed the package in the back seat
-
3:10 - 3:12as he warned me about speeding.
-
3:12 - 3:15"Where are you off to
in such a hurry?", he asked me. -
3:15 - 3:17"Baby shower in Denio."
-
3:17 - 3:19"Ah," he responded.
-
3:19 - 3:22"I wondered about all the traffic."
-
3:22 - 3:26There were five vehicles
ahead of us as far as we could see, -
3:26 - 3:28and we could see 15 miles.
-
3:31 - 3:34Imagine being the local
traffic reporter in this world. -
3:34 - 3:36It might go something like this.
-
3:37 - 3:40Here's your local traffic report
at 10 minutes past the hour -
3:40 - 3:41from jet copter 810.
-
3:42 - 3:44There's a hay truck stalled
with a smoking engine -
3:44 - 3:48in the eastbound lane of Highway 140
at mile marker 34 -
3:48 - 3:52causing a slow down as gawkers
stop to see what's going on. -
3:53 - 3:55Traffic's backed up three pick-up lengths
-
3:55 - 3:58as travelers rummage
in their coolers for water bottles -
3:58 - 4:00to help put out the blaze.
-
4:00 - 4:03Looks like they've got it under control.
-
4:03 - 4:05And here comes a tractor
to haul the hay truck -
4:05 - 4:07into the rest area turn-around.
-
4:08 - 4:10On the Denio repeater
-
4:10 - 4:13traffic has come to a standstill
as both lanes are totally clogged -
4:13 - 4:16with black bolly heifers
at the Harness Place hill. -
4:16 - 4:19The Quinn river buckaroos
appear to be trying to cross the highway -
4:19 - 4:21southbound with the herd.
-
4:21 - 4:23And those girls just don't seem
to want to move. -
4:23 - 4:25Looks like some of the cattle
-
4:25 - 4:27are attempting to turn around
and head northbound -
4:27 - 4:29making for a complete snarl up.
-
4:30 - 4:33In addition, air quality
appears to be deteriorating -
4:33 - 4:35as there's a lot of hat waving
-
4:35 - 4:37and the atmosphere is filling
with clouds of blue smoke -
4:37 - 4:39above the cowboys
at the back of the bunch. -
4:40 - 4:43Looks like about a ten minute wait
while they clear that mess up, -
4:43 - 4:45but it could be longer.
-
4:46 - 4:48Down by Coyote Point
-
4:48 - 4:50heavy traffic is moving at a snail's pace
-
4:50 - 4:53as a herd of several hundred
head of sheep appears to be stalled -
4:53 - 4:55consuming the ditch banks.
-
4:56 - 4:58It does look like they're starting to move
-
4:58 - 5:01but not much progress
is being made in any direction. -
5:01 - 5:04Off 140 on to the Quinn River Road -
-
5:04 - 5:06a flock or rooster pheasants
has apparently broken down -
5:06 - 5:08in the middle of the lane,
-
5:08 - 5:11backing up several cottontails
and a flock of quail. -
5:11 - 5:14Again, gawkers are a problem
-
5:14 - 5:16as everyone in the neighborhood
seems to be gathering -
5:16 - 5:20to count the roosters and see
which ones are the best targets. -
5:21 - 5:24Up at the turn-off two pick-up trucks
are stopped facing different directions -
5:24 - 5:27completely blocking both lanes.
-
5:27 - 5:30The drivers are apparently engaged
in some kind of negotiation, -
5:30 - 5:34as there is much arm waving
and pointing out the windows. -
5:34 - 5:37Could be giving directions
to tonight's poker game at the neighbor's. -
5:38 - 5:41Further south along the valley
watch for occasional antelope -
5:41 - 5:44leaping into your path
from either direction. -
5:44 - 5:46Keep an eye out for flocks of ducks
sleeping in the roadway -
5:46 - 5:49as the cold mornings
attract them to the pavement. -
5:49 - 5:52And Golden eagles parked on the shoulders
-
5:52 - 5:54cleaning up last night's roadkill.
-
5:54 - 5:57Motorists should be able
to spot this last hazard -
5:57 - 6:00by the flocks of crows surrounding them.
-
6:00 - 6:02And finally, there's a bull
stuck in the cattle guard -
6:02 - 6:04over the nine mile summit.
-
6:04 - 6:08Travelers are advised to take
the flat road into Kings River valley -
6:08 - 6:09until further notice.
-
6:09 - 6:11From jet copter 810
-
6:11 - 6:14that's your Highway 140 traffic report
for this afternoon. -
6:14 - 6:15Happy traveling!
-
6:18 - 6:20Traffic in the city is all about flow
-
6:20 - 6:21and obstacles to it.
-
6:22 - 6:25In this part of the world,
that's also true. -
6:25 - 6:27But the tempo is very different.
-
6:27 - 6:31Driving anywhere out here
is almost like a meditation. -
6:32 - 6:34The long stretches of emptiness
invite dreaming. -
6:35 - 6:36Winding gravel roads
-
6:36 - 6:38draw the imagination.
-
6:39 - 6:41These roads look like they go
somewhere interesting. -
6:41 - 6:43Somewhere you would want to go.
-
6:45 - 6:48Even though I drive to work
on these roads every day -
6:49 - 6:51I never know what to anticipate.
-
6:52 - 6:54I can never see around the next bend
-
6:54 - 6:56or over the ridge in front of me.
-
6:56 - 6:58And I know
-
6:58 - 6:59somewhere along the way
-
6:59 - 7:01there's bound to be traffic.
-
