Traffic Report: a Deep West Video by Carolyn & Linda Dufurrena

  • 0:04 - 0:06
Radio reporter: ...in a stalled car
    on the causeway
  • 0:07 - 0:09
    and that was really starting
    to back up traffic.
  • 0:09 - 0:12
    Leaving Hayward, let's go
to KGO's Michaelyn in jet copter 810.
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    Michaelyn Meyers: Jet copter
    over the scene
  • 0:14 - 0:17
    as the orange tow truck
pulled that thing out of the right lane,
  • 0:17 - 0:20
now you have a back-up at the westbound
    San-Mateo Bridge toll plaza
  • 0:21 - 0:22
that is a little more than a quarter mile
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    once you get past
one mile past the toll plaza,
  • 0:25 - 0:27
    you're going to zoom
    right over to San Mateo.
  • 0:27 - 0:30
I'm Michaelyn, KGO, jet copter 810.
  • 0:30 - 0:32
OK, thank you, we're going to go
    to Dave Callahan here
  • 0:32 - 0:35
    he's going to be talking
    on our Diablo repeater,
  • 0:35 - 0:39
and Dave has been checking out
Contra Costa county highways 4 and 680.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
    Dave Callahan: Yeah, highway 4
backs up from just before Somersville
  • 0:42 - 0:46
pass the railroad 242 in [unclear]
backed up one mile on the 680
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    and 680 - ooh, it's backed up
    from [unclear].
  • 0:49 - 0:50
    Reporter: Alright, thank you Dave.
  • 0:50 - 0:54
Heavy traffic is starting to build up now
behind the Bay Bridge toll plaza
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    although it shouldn't be more
than about a 10 minute wait
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    immediately behind the cash box.
  • 0:58 - 1:01
And the highway 24 was backed-up
    towards children's hospital
  • 1:01 - 1:02
    for that westbound drive.
  • 1:02 - 1:06
Taking a look at the peninsula right now,
    we have KGO's Mike Zanda.
  • 1:06 - 1:07
MZ: We have that big rig crash
  • 1:07 - 1:10
on the ramp from eastbound 380
    to South 101
  • 1:10 - 1:12
it's still there causing a minor delay
  • 1:12 - 1:15
no further problems past the airport
all the way down to peninsula
  • 1:15 - 1:16
    to Redwood City.
  • 1:16 - 1:19
R: So 101, at least into San Mateo
    looks pretty good right now
  • 1:19 - 1:21
coming the way from San Francisco airport
  • 1:21 - 1:24
we've had no new accidents reported
    for the South Bay.
  • 1:24 - 1:28
I'm Lin Durling with traffic on the 8
every 10 minutes on KGO Newstalk 810.
  • 1:28 - 1:32
    (Music)
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    Carolyn Dufurrena:
    Highway 140 Traffic report.
  • 1:37 - 1:40
As I listen to the radio on my way
    to school in the morning,
  • 1:40 - 1:42
I can't help but be grateful
  • 1:42 - 1:45
that I'm not stuck in the pile-up
    on the westbound San Mateo.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
Or in the slow-down on eastbound 680.
  • 1:48 - 1:51
Six lanes of hybrid SUVs and big rigs
  • 1:51 - 1:54
    idling with frustrated drivers
    behind the wheel,
  • 1:54 - 1:57
just isn't my idea of a pleasant morning.
  • 1:59 - 2:02
Traffic is a fact of life
    in urban America,
  • 2:02 - 2:04
something people just put up with.
  • 2:04 - 2:07
    Like taking your shoes off
before you get on a plane.
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    Something someone
should figure out how to fix.
  • 2:12 - 2:14
Out here, the roads are mostly empty.
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    There's a lot more scenery
    than clutter on the horizon.
  • 2:18 - 2:21
    And I can actually see
the horizon most of the time.
  • 2:22 - 2:25
A pilot friend of mine described
driving through the desert this way:
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    In Nevada, he said,
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    you figure out how many
    miles you have to go
  • 2:29 - 2:31
look at the time you have to get there
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    and adjust your speed accordingly.
  • 2:35 - 2:38
    Traffic, the way you
think of it is not an issue.
  • 2:38 - 2:39
    Usually.
  • 2:41 - 2:43
In my corner of the world,
  • 2:43 - 2:45
traffic is six sets of headlights
  • 2:45 - 2:49
    in the forty-mile stretch
that takes me across the Sod House flat
  • 2:49 - 2:52
    as I make the turn
    from Highway 95 onto 140.
  • 2:53 - 2:56
Traffic is when I follow a handful
    of pick-ups and mini-vans
  • 2:56 - 2:58
    to a school program
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    and I pretty much know
    who's in every vehicle.
  • 3:02 - 3:04
Once, on a way to a local gathering
  • 3:04 - 3:07
we were stopped by our friendly
    neighborhood highway patrolman
  • 3:07 - 3:10
who noticed the package in the back seat
  • 3:10 - 3:12
as he warned me about speeding.
  • 3:12 - 3:15
    "Where are you off to
in such a hurry?", he asked me.
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    "Baby shower in Denio."
  • 3:17 - 3:19
    "Ah," he responded.
  • 3:19 - 3:22
"I wondered about all the traffic."
  • 3:22 - 3:26
    There were five vehicles
ahead of us as far as we could see,
  • 3:26 - 3:28
and we could see 15 miles.
  • 3:31 - 3:34
    Imagine being the local
    traffic reporter in this world.
  • 3:34 - 3:36
It might go something like this.
  • 3:37 - 3:40
    Here's your local traffic report
at 10 minutes past the hour
  • 3:40 - 3:41
    from jet copter 810.
  • 3:42 - 3:44
    There's a hay truck stalled
    with a smoking engine
  • 3:44 - 3:48
in the eastbound lane of Highway 140
    at mile marker 34
  • 3:48 - 3:52
causing a slow down as gawkers
stop to see what's going on.
  • 3:53 - 3:55
Traffic's backed up three pick-up lengths
  • 3:55 - 3:58
    as travelers rummage
in their coolers for water bottles
  • 3:58 - 4:00
to help put out the blaze.
  • 4:00 - 4:03
Looks like they've got it under control.
  • 4:03 - 4:05
    And here comes a tractor
    to haul the hay truck
  • 4:05 - 4:07
    into the rest area turn-around.
  • 4:08 - 4:10
    On the Denio repeater
  • 4:10 - 4:13
traffic has come to a standstill
as both lanes are totally clogged
  • 4:13 - 4:16
    with black bolly heifers
    at the Harness Place hill.
  • 4:16 - 4:19
    The Quinn river buckaroos
appear to be trying to cross the highway
  • 4:19 - 4:21
    southbound with the herd.
  • 4:21 - 4:23
And those girls just don't seem
    to want to move.
  • 4:23 - 4:25
Looks like some of the cattle
  • 4:25 - 4:27
    are attempting to turn around
    and head northbound
  • 4:27 - 4:29
making for a complete snarl up.
  • 4:30 - 4:33
    In addition, air quality
    appears to be deteriorating
  • 4:33 - 4:35
as there's a lot of hat waving
  • 4:35 - 4:37
    and the atmosphere is filling
    with clouds of blue smoke
  • 4:37 - 4:39
    above the cowboys
at the back of the bunch.
  • 4:40 - 4:43
Looks like about a ten minute wait
while they clear that mess up,
  • 4:43 - 4:45
    but it could be longer.
  • 4:46 - 4:48
    Down by Coyote Point
  • 4:48 - 4:50
heavy traffic is moving at a snail's pace
  • 4:50 - 4:53
as a herd of several hundred
head of sheep appears to be stalled
  • 4:53 - 4:55
    consuming the ditch banks.
  • 4:56 - 4:58
It does look like they're starting to move
  • 4:58 - 5:01
    but not much progress
is being made in any direction.
  • 5:01 - 5:04
Off 140 on to the Quinn River Road -
  • 5:04 - 5:06
    a flock or rooster pheasants
    has apparently broken down
  • 5:06 - 5:08
in the middle of the lane,
  • 5:08 - 5:11
    backing up several cottontails
    and a flock of quail.
  • 5:11 - 5:14
    Again, gawkers are a problem
  • 5:14 - 5:16
    as everyone in the neighborhood
    seems to be gathering
  • 5:16 - 5:20
to count the roosters and see
which ones are the best targets.
  • 5:21 - 5:24
Up at the turn-off two pick-up trucks
    are stopped facing different directions
  • 5:24 - 5:27
    completely blocking both lanes.
  • 5:27 - 5:30
    The drivers are apparently engaged
    in some kind of negotiation,
  • 5:30 - 5:34
as there is much arm waving
    and pointing out the windows.
  • 5:34 - 5:37
    Could be giving directions
to tonight's poker game at the neighbor's.
  • 5:38 - 5:41
    Further south along the valley
    watch for occasional antelope
  • 5:41 - 5:44
    leaping into your path
    from either direction.
  • 5:44 - 5:46
Keep an eye out for flocks of ducks
    sleeping in the roadway
  • 5:46 - 5:49
    as the cold mornings
    attract them to the pavement.
  • 5:49 - 5:52
And Golden eagles parked on the shoulders
  • 5:52 - 5:54
    cleaning up last night's roadkill.
  • 5:54 - 5:57
    Motorists should be able
    to spot this last hazard
  • 5:57 - 6:00
by the flocks of crows surrounding them.
  • 6:00 - 6:02
    And finally, there's a bull
    stuck in the cattle guard
  • 6:02 - 6:04
    over the nine mile summit.
  • 6:04 - 6:08
    Travelers are advised to take
the flat road into Kings River valley
  • 6:08 - 6:09
    until further notice.
  • 6:09 - 6:11
    From jet copter 810
  • 6:11 - 6:14
that's your Highway 140 traffic report
    for this afternoon.
  • 6:14 - 6:15
    Happy traveling!
  • 6:18 - 6:20
Traffic in the city is all about flow
  • 6:20 - 6:21
    and obstacles to it.
  • 6:22 - 6:25
In this part of the world,
    that's also true.
  • 6:25 - 6:27
But the tempo is very different.
  • 6:27 - 6:31
    Driving anywhere out here
    is almost like a meditation.
  • 6:32 - 6:34
    The long stretches of emptiness
    invite dreaming.
  • 6:35 - 6:36
    Winding gravel roads
  • 6:36 - 6:38
    draw the imagination.
  • 6:39 - 6:41
These roads look like they go
    somewhere interesting.
  • 6:41 - 6:43
Somewhere you would want to go.
  • 6:45 - 6:48
Even though I drive to work
    on these roads every day
  • 6:49 - 6:51
I never know what to anticipate.
  • 6:52 - 6:54
I can never see around the next bend
  • 6:54 - 6:56
or over the ridge in front of me.
  • 6:56 - 6:58
    And I know
  • 6:58 - 6:59
    somewhere along the way
  • 6:59 - 7:01
    there's bound to be traffic.
  • 7:02 - 7:05
