  2. My name is Masato Tahara
    I am a Flip Education researcher
  3. Mr. Bergmann will speak on
    "what Flip Education is" in detail shortly
  4. For my part, I would like to talk about the
    reason why flipping is called for today
  5. I believe the purpose of education is
  6. to develop children's ability to live in the society
  7. I observe that the societal paradigm is
    "flipping" from old to new right now
  8. With that shift, the educational paradigm
    must also be flipped
  9. Since Industrial Revolution
  10. the world has been considered as a huge machine
  11. This paradigm, which has been with us
    for over 400 years,
  12. is called Mechanistic Paradigm
  13. According to this paradigm
  14. everything develops from past to future
    according to certain principles
  15. Applying those principles, we predict future,
  16. make plans, and implement them
  17. This mode of operating has been valued
    in Mechanistic Paradigm
  18. I am a physics teacher
  19. so this way of thinking is very familiar to me
  20. However, since the internet was
    introduced 22 years ago,
  21. the Mechanistic Paradigm started
    not function too well
  22. Why is that?
  23. There is a reason
  24. As a physicist, my expertise was in
    complexity physics
  25. From that perspective
    the reason is very clear
  26. In general, systems acquire new properties
    as they become more complex
  27. For example, our bodies are made of many cells
  28. But, it is not simple
    collection of cells
  29. As cells come together,
    new properties are acquired
  30. and life emerges
  31. For example, fish is no longer living
    when it is cut into parts
  32. Similarly, dissecting complex system
  33. and studying parts separately
  34. the sum would not lead to
    the understanding of the whole
  35. As the internet connects the world
    like the nerve system
  36. the world is no longer like a huge machine
  37. it is becoming more like
    a huge living organism
  38. with that, parts and the whole are
    closely interconnected
  39. It is no longer possible to understand
    the whole world
  40. by looking at small parts
  41. In the past, our process to
    predict future was as follows:
  42. 1) Build a model
    focus on what's relevant, ignoring the rest
  43. 2) Refine the model
    based on the data from the past
  44. 3) Predict the future
    by applying the model
  45. When the world was not
    closely interconnected
  46. this method worked well
  47. But when we build a model
    by extracting small parts of complex nexwork
  48. the ignored elements enlarges
  49. the gap between the model and reality too much
  50. The gap becomes too big to ignore when
    we try to predict in a longer term
  51. With internet, the world is becoming
    more and more complex
  52. Mechanistic Paradigm will become
    more and more obsolete
  53. What should we do then?
  54. I believe the nature's ability to organize itself
  55. power of self-organization
    will be very important
  56. No one plans a forest
  57. but forest develops complex eco-system
    all by itself
  58. it is due to the self-organization ability
    of the nature
  59. As living organisms, we too have
    self-organizing ability
  60. In the future, it will be important to
    utilize our self-organizing ability
  61. in order to harmonize our societies
  62. The difference between
    mechanistic order and
  63. the organic order through
    self-organization is like this
  64. The Mechanistic order functions
    when individual freedom is restricted
  65. Everyone acts as subscribed
  66. Then the order is maintained
  67. When individuals act freely
    the order breaks down
  68. In contrast, in organic order
  69. individuals' life force brings order
  70. In that, we need to liberate individual freedom
  71. In the mechanistic order,
  72. information is concentrated in the hands of
    the manager on the top of the hierarchy
  73. the managers make plans
    and the subordinates implement the plans
  74. The information flows one way
    from top to bottom
  75. In the organic order
  76. the information is scattered
    among the members
  77. Each member holds various
    diverse information
  78. By bringing diverse information
    and learning collectively
  79. the group determines the direction
    to move forward
  80. The information is created
  81. What it means is
  82. the direction of information flow
  83. in the mechanical order and
    in the organic order is reversed
  84. In the mechanical order
  85. the goal is set in future
  86. and determine what to do now
    by calculating backwards
  87. The time flows backward from the goal to present
  88. In the organic paradigm
  89. future is created by sharing what we are
    feeling in the present moment
  90. The time flows from present to the future
  91. The flow of time too is "flipped"
  92. in mechanistic paradigm and organic paradigm
  93. In the education to live in
    the mechanistic order
  94. the ability to act according
    to the plan by the manager
  95. without questioning
  96. without making mistakes
  97. and quickly
  98. was greatly valued
  99. As the futurist Alvin Toffler pointed out
  100. obedience, punctuality, and
    patience to perform repetitious tasks
  101. was taught as hidden curriculum
  102. In order to guarantee organizational continuity
    despite member changes
  103. the standardization of thoughts
    was stressed
  104. This kind of education was meaningful
  105. while mechanistic society was functioning
  106. However, in the present time
    when societal paradigm is shifting
  107. from mechanistic to organic
  108. we have to re-examin current education
  109. Or else children's ability to live
    in the future society could be compromised
  110. What is the educational model that fosters
    ability to live in an organic society?
  111. I propose the hidden curriculum of
    the past be replaced as follows
  112. be authentic self
  113. learn from differences
  114. keep reframing through self-reflections
  115. What it means is
  116. to exam the frame of reference
    that one holds
  117. and keep renewing it
  118. such process would be very important
  119. In a safe and secure environment
  120. express oneself
  121. learn from each other
  122. in order to create collective wisdom
  123. This type of learning will probably foster
    the learning for the future
  124. In Japan, active learning and flip education
    is attracting more attentions
  125. In December 2012
  126. I started a study group on flip education
  127. with only about 10 friends
  128. All my previous education was
    of mechanistic model
  129. I had no idea how it is like to learn as a group
  130. I had no idea how to create future
    from collective wisdom
  131. So I wanted to experience
    collective learning myself first
  132. As I proposed to create a forest like
    environment online
  133. where diverse people would gather
  134. in 5 years, the forest has grown
    to have 4500 participants
  135. It was never anticipated when I started
  136. Through my 5 years of experience
    I am convinced
  137. that when I want to start something
  138. it goes better when
    I share my ideas with others
  139. than when I make plans by myself
  140. As I dialogue my hopes and
    desires with others
  141. more and more people come together
  142. and things are realized in a way
    not even imagined at the beginning
  143. I have experienced that repeatedly
    in last 5 years
  144. It might seem senseless in
    a mechanistic society
  145. But in an organic society
  146. it will soon become a common sense
  147. Our children will probably live in a society
  148. that is a further development of
    my experience in last 5 years
  149. The Flip Education means much more than
  150. flipping the order and role of
    classroom learning and homework
  151. The paradigm would shift from
  152. the teacher-centered
    "teaching" paradigm to
  153. learner-centered "learning" paradigm
  154. From top-down learning from past success
    and of the predetermined knowledge
  155. to the learning where learners dialogue
  156. share knowledge
  157. exchange emotions and share individual
    hopes and desires
  158. build collective wisdom from the bottom up
  159. for the creation of future
  160. that kind of "flip"
  161. Furthermore, the life will change from
  162. setting a goal in the future and
    and calculating backwards
  163. to the life that co-creats future
  164. by sharing what is felt by me
    and others around me
  165. Thus, flipping the flow of time
  166. It is also a shift from maintaining the order
    by restricting individual freedom
  167. to fostering self-organization by
    liberating freedom
  168. It is also a shift from the mechanistic
    paradigm to the organic paradigm
  169. We are at a great turning point of
    the human history
  170. where 2 paradigms co-exist
  171. We are living in contradictions
    of the paradigms
  172. From the mechanistic perspective
    this contradiction appears as a crisis
  173. the order is breaking down
  174. But from the organic perspective
  175. it is the source of creation
  176. This present historical turning point
  177. can be seen as the end of an old era
  178. or as the beginning of a new era
  179. 5 years ago, as a teacher of physics
    at a college prep school
  180. I published video footage of my classes online
  181. I anticipated what was working before
    would no longer work before long
  182. my job would be elimiated
  183. I was experiencing great anxiety
  184. But now, I am excited that I stand
    at the beginning of new era
  185. I am involved in flip education
  186. with a hope to create future with colleagues
    from around the world
  187. Through which perspective
    do we see the world?
  188. We have a choice
