  • 12:39 - 12:42
that she mentioned that they had
  • 12:42 - 12:45
    already fallen into disobedience
  • 12:45 - 12:47
    as a result of mixing
  • 12:47 - 12:52
    with surrounding countries and tribes,
  • 12:52 - 12:53
    and that had led them
  • 12:53 - 12:57
into a state of apostasy and disobedience.
  • 12:57 - 13:00
And they were trying to avoid doing that,
  • 13:00 - 13:02
that there was actually wisdom in this,
  • 13:02 - 13:06
that they saw this as a ploy of the enemy
  • 13:06 - 13:09
to lead them away from obedience to God,
  • 13:09 - 13:10
    which is what got them
  • 13:10 - 13:12
into that position to start with,
  • 13:12 - 13:16
"and we want to do everything we can
    to avoid that."
  • 13:16 - 13:17
And then the way that they react
  • 13:17 - 13:19
    shows that they were right.
  • 13:19 - 13:20
    (Derek) Ah, that's right.
  • 13:20 - 13:21
    Even if you didn't know
  • 13:21 - 13:22
    all of that background,
  • 13:22 - 13:24
    which is quite interesting;
  • 13:24 - 13:26
that's the "rest of the story."
  • 13:26 - 13:29
All you need to do is read how they react
  • 13:29 - 13:31
in the next few verses, right? Puia?
  • 13:31 - 13:33
    (Puia) From the description
  • 13:33 - 13:35
    of their name itself here,
  • 13:35 - 13:39
    Ezra used "adversaries;"
    they can't be friends.
  • 13:39 - 13:40
    (Derek) But he may not
  • 13:40 - 13:42
    have known that immediately, right?
  • 13:42 - 13:45
It may have taken a little time
    to see that,
  • 13:45 - 13:47
    but you've got here,
  • 13:47 - 13:50
as soon as they don't get their way,
  • 13:50 - 13:52
    they show their true colors.
  • 13:52 - 13:54
(Marcus) They discourage, and then they
  • 13:54 - 13:56
try to bring trouble to them
    as they're building.
  • 13:56 - 13:58
    (Derek) They hire counselors
  • 13:58 - 14:02
    against them to frustrate them.
  • 14:02 - 14:04
    So they're using deception.
  • 14:04 - 14:06
    They're not coming, saying,
  • 14:06 - 14:07
    "We're your enemies.
  • 14:07 - 14:09
    We've gone into apostasy,
  • 14:09 - 14:12
and we're trying to hinder your work."
  • 14:12 - 14:15
    Does that strategy of deception
  • 14:15 - 14:19
remind you of anybody else? Stephanie.
  • 14:19 - 14:20
(Stephanie) In the Garden of Eden
  • 14:20 - 14:21
    with Adam and Eve
  • 14:21 - 14:25
    when Satan came to deceive.
  • 14:25 - 14:27
    (Derek) And says, "Eat this fruit;
  • 14:27 - 14:28
it will kill you, and it will
  • 14:28 - 14:31
cause misery to all of your descendants."
  • 14:31 - 14:34
That would have been the truth, right?
  • 14:34 - 14:36
    "But you'll be like God.
  • 14:36 - 14:37
    You'll be wise like God.
  • 14:37 - 14:39
    Your eyes will be opened."
  • 14:39 - 14:40
Can you think of any other times
  • 14:40 - 14:43
    that Satan....This is deception,
  • 14:43 - 14:44
    and the real enemy, again,
  • 14:44 - 14:45
    is not these people
  • 14:45 - 14:48
but Satan and his kingdom behind.
  • 14:48 - 14:50
Can you think of other times
  • 14:50 - 14:53
    when Satan uses deception
  • 14:53 - 14:55
to try to lead people astray? Gladys?
  • 14:55 - 14:57
    (Gladys) I think of Solomon
  • 14:57 - 14:58
    when he was being king.
  • 14:58 - 15:00
    God had already promised him
  • 15:00 - 15:02
    that he will be wise
  • 15:02 - 15:03
and that He will be with him.
  • 15:03 - 15:05
And yet he married all these women
  • 15:05 - 15:07
because he was afraid that these kingdoms
  • 15:07 - 15:09
    will reunite against him.
  • 15:09 - 15:10
He tried to do it his way,
  • 15:10 - 15:12
so it was kind of like the devil
  • 15:12 - 15:14
    trying to influence what God
  • 15:14 - 15:18
had already prescribed to be good,
    for something evil.
  • 15:18 - 15:20
So he aligned himself with these women
  • 15:20 - 15:23
that, at the end, just departed his heart
  • 15:23 - 15:25
    from the plan of God.
  • 15:25 - 15:27
(Derek) And maybe the enemy said
  • 15:27 - 15:29
    to Solomon, "Build some temples
  • 15:29 - 15:32
just to keep your wives happy."
  • 15:32 - 15:34
He's not saying, "And you can
  • 15:34 - 15:35
    commit apostasy, too,
  • 15:35 - 15:37
and you can worship false gods."
  • 15:37 - 15:39
    But you're absolutely right,
  • 15:39 - 15:40
it did turn his heart away.
  • 15:40 - 15:41
    That's an example.
  • 15:41 - 15:43
    Someone else, another example. Pedro?
  • 15:43 - 15:44
    (Pedro) I would say Jesus
  • 15:44 - 15:46
when He was tempted by Satan.
  • 15:46 - 15:48
He didn't come, like, "Oh, I'm Satan.
  • 15:48 - 15:50
You're in my territory; get out of here."
  • 15:50 - 15:52
    No, no, "Make some bread
    out of this rock."
  • 15:52 - 15:54
And we can see this here
  • 15:54 - 15:57
that they're trying to trick them
  • 15:57 - 15:59
    because if they helped,
  • 15:59 - 16:00
it would also give them the opportunity
  • 16:00 - 16:02
to say, "Well, since we built,
  • 16:02 - 16:04
we want to bring our gods
    into your temple now."
  • 16:04 - 16:06
(Derek) Ah, "We helped build the temple,
  • 16:06 - 16:09
so we want a room for our gods."
    Okay, Travis?
  • 16:09 - 16:11
    (Travis) I think of Balaam.
  • 16:11 - 16:17
You know, the story where he gets paid
  • 16:17 - 16:24
to go and trick or cast a spell for money.
  • 16:24 - 16:25
And that's just how Satan works.
  • 16:25 - 16:27
He wants to make things look attractive,
  • 16:27 - 16:31
but yet their's deception in it.
  • 16:31 - 16:33
(Derek) So, how can we avoid
  • 16:33 - 16:35
    that kind of deception?
  • 16:35 - 16:36
    We're talking about wanting
  • 16:36 - 16:39
to, in this day, be faithful to God.
  • 16:39 - 16:42
    We're going to experience opposition.
  • 16:42 - 16:46
How can we be alert, Jason, when people
  • 16:46 - 16:49
seem to be friendly and helpful,
  • 16:49 - 16:51
but there's actually deception at work?
  • 16:51 - 16:53
    (Jason) Thinking of Pedro's reference
  • 16:53 - 16:54
    to Jesus' temptations,
  • 16:54 - 16:55
Jesus responded with, "It is written."
  • 16:55 - 16:57
He went right back to Scripture.
  • 16:57 - 16:58
    So, knowing the Scriptures
  • 16:58 - 17:00
and being able quote the Scriptures
  • 17:00 - 17:03
is a very powerful tool against deception.
  • 17:03 - 17:05
(Derek) Okay. Anybody else? Yes, Gladys?
  • 17:05 - 17:07
(Gladys) I wouldn't say just quote
    the Scripture,
  • 17:07 - 17:09
but having that relationship with God
  • 17:09 - 17:12
when the Word is living in you.
  • 17:12 - 17:13
    Then you will be able
  • 17:13 - 17:15
    to recognize any counterfeit.
  • 17:15 - 17:17
Because somebody who works in a bank,
  • 17:17 - 17:19
they don't study every counterfeit money
    that comes out.
  • 17:19 - 17:21
    They just spend time
  • 17:21 - 17:23
recognizing and knowing the real money,
  • 17:23 - 17:25
    so when counterfeit comes,
  • 17:25 - 17:26
    they recognize it right away.
  • 17:26 - 17:29
So should we, when we study
    the Word of God,
  • 17:29 - 17:31
it becomes part of our daily lives.
  • 17:31 - 17:33
So, when something like that comes,
  • 17:33 - 17:35
it will be easier to recognize.
  • 17:35 - 17:37
(Derek) So let's look at another aspect,
  • 17:37 - 17:39
    another attempt at deception
  • 17:39 - 17:42
in Ezra, chapter 5, with someone
  • 17:42 - 17:45
by the name of Tattenai, governor
  • 17:45 - 17:47
of the region beyond the Euphrates.
  • 17:47 - 17:49
Puia, if you could take us
  • 17:49 - 17:51
    to Ezra, chapter 5,
  • 17:51 - 17:52
    let's hear the story
  • 17:52 - 17:54
    in verses 8 through 17.
  • 17:54 - 17:58
Now, this is kind of an official
  • 17:58 - 18:01
    wanting to use deception
  • 18:01 - 18:03
to hinder the work of God.
  • 18:03 - 18:05
    (Puia) And I'll be reading
  • 18:05 - 18:06
from the New King James Version,
  • 18:06 - 18:09
    Ezra, chapter 5, verses 8 through 17:
  • 20:19 - 20:22
(Derek) Why is he writing this letter?
  • 20:22 - 20:25
He has no connection with the building
  • 20:25 - 20:27
    of the house of God.
  • 20:27 - 20:29
    (Stephanie) Stir up trouble.
  • 20:29 - 20:31
(Derek) What's he trying to do, Stephanie?
  • 20:31 - 20:32
    (Stephanie) Stir up trouble.
  • 20:32 - 20:34
(Derek) Is he hoping that they
  • 20:34 - 20:35
won't be able to find the record,
  • 20:35 - 20:38
or check the records and see
  • 20:38 - 20:41
if it's actually what they're saying?
  • 20:41 - 20:42
    (Marcus) Right, yeah, he's trying
  • 20:42 - 20:44
to hinder the work as well.
  • 20:44 - 20:45
    He's a government official,
  • 20:45 - 20:48
but he's, like, on the other side
    of the river.
  • 20:48 - 20:50
And so he's trying to kind of spy
  • 20:50 - 20:51
    and say, "As an official,
  • 20:51 - 20:53
    what are you doing here,
  • 20:53 - 20:54
and why are you building here?
  • 20:54 - 20:56
    Who has given you authority
    to build here?"
  • 20:56 - 20:58
And sometimes when we face opposition,
  • 20:58 - 21:01
it's hard to come back and stand and say,
  • 21:01 - 21:03
"By the word of our God,
  • 21:03 - 21:06
we are here doing His work."
  • 21:06 - 21:07
That's not always easy to say,
  • 21:07 - 21:09
especially in the face of somebody
  • 21:09 - 21:11
who may be in authority over us.
  • 21:11 - 21:13
(Derek) So, how do you think
  • 21:13 - 21:17
that the people of God responded
  • 21:17 - 21:21
to that letter that was sent back
    to the king? Panic?
  • 21:21 - 21:22
    (Travis) Prayer.
  • 21:22 - 21:24
    (Derek) Prayer, "Okay, Lord,
  • 21:24 - 21:27
    You guided, You worked miraculously
  • 21:27 - 21:30
to convince the king to make the decree.
  • 21:30 - 21:33
    You need to work miraculously
  • 21:33 - 21:36
in this deceptive work that this governor
  • 21:36 - 21:37
    is trying to accomplish."
  • 21:37 - 21:39
    Let's see what happens.
  • 21:39 - 21:40
Laurel, could you read for us
  • 21:40 - 21:44
    in chapter 6, verses 11 and 12.
  • 21:44 - 21:46
    Actually, King Darius sends
  • 21:46 - 21:50
a warning back to this governor
  • 21:50 - 21:53
in chapter 6 of Ezra, verses 11 and 12.
  • 21:53 - 21:54
    (Laurel) I'll be reading
  • 21:54 - 21:56
from the New American Standard Bible:
  • 22:33 - 22:35
    (Derek) What's the takeaway lesson?
  • 22:35 - 22:39
    (Heide) That backfired.
  • 22:39 - 22:41
(Derek) For those of you who didn't hear,
  • 22:41 - 22:44
Heide said, "That kind of sneaky plot
  • 22:44 - 22:46
    of Tattenai backfired."
  • 22:46 - 22:48
    And the king basically said,
  • 22:48 - 22:50
"Anyone who opposes what I have ordered,
  • 22:50 - 22:52
let a timber be pulled out of his house,
  • 22:52 - 22:55
made into a gallows or hanged, mine says.
  • 22:55 - 22:57
    Yours says "impaled on it,
  • 22:57 - 22:59
and his house turned into a heap."
  • 22:59 - 23:03
In other words, God is able to use, again,
  • 23:03 - 23:09
a, can I call him a pagan monarch?
  • 23:09 - 23:11
And yet somehow God's at work
  • 23:11 - 23:13
    in that man's heart, right,
  • 23:13 - 23:17
    to hinder the deceptions
  • 23:17 - 23:21
and the plotting of the enemy. Puia?
  • 23:21 - 23:23
(Puia) I'm reminded of a verse
    in Proverbs.
  • 23:23 - 23:25
I forgot where, but the principle
  • 23:25 - 23:27
is there that says that when you try
  • 23:27 - 23:29
to set a trap for someone,
  • 23:29 - 23:30
    it comes back to you.
  • 23:30 - 23:33
    (Derek) You can become caught
    in your own trap?
  • 23:33 - 23:34
(Puia) Yeah, caught in your own trap.
  • 23:34 - 23:37
So I think what this person here,
the governor, is trying to do
  • 23:37 - 23:39
is set a trap for the people of God,
  • 23:39 - 23:42
intentionally tried to set a trap.
  • 23:42 - 23:44
And that can backfire, like Heide said.
  • 23:44 - 23:46
So we can learn the lesson there
  • 23:46 - 23:50
    that, even today, if someone
  • 23:50 - 23:54
is trying to set a trap,
  • 23:54 - 23:56
they better make sure that they are
  • 23:56 - 23:58
doing it for the right reason.
  • 23:58 - 23:59
    (Derek) And we don't rejoice
  • 23:59 - 24:01
that he got caught in his own trap,
  • 24:01 - 24:03
but we do rejoice that God
  • 24:03 - 24:05
    delivered His people, right?
  • 24:05 - 24:07
    (Travis) This reminds me
  • 24:07 - 24:09
    of the story of Mordecai and Haman;
    it really does.
  • 24:09 - 24:10
    (Derek) Oh, yes.
  • 24:10 - 24:12
    (Travis) I mean, there's such a direct...
  • 24:12 - 24:14
    (Derek) And actually that's happening...
  • 24:14 - 24:16
(Travis) In the same time, yeah.
  • 24:16 - 24:17
    (Derek) ...same time period.
  • 24:17 - 24:19
    (Travis) The same thing happens,
  • 24:19 - 24:20
only it turns out really bad for Haman.
  • 24:20 - 24:23
(Derek) He really is hanged on the gallows
  • 24:23 - 24:24
    he prepared to hang
  • 24:24 - 24:27
    one of God's ambassadors, right,
    Mordecai.
  • 24:27 - 24:30
So, yeah, there are some powerful lessons.
  • 24:30 - 24:33
Well, in the midst of these oppositions,
  • 24:33 - 24:36
    tricks, traps, scheming,
  • 24:36 - 24:38
    God sends some prophets
  • 24:38 - 24:40
    to encourage His people.
  • 24:40 - 24:43
So let's look in Ezra, chapter 5,
  • 24:43 - 24:45
    the first two verses,
  • 24:45 - 24:47
    and we'll see what message
  • 24:47 - 24:50
    these prophets bring.
  • 24:50 - 24:54
Ezra, chapter 5, Jason, first two verses,
  • 24:54 - 24:57
    are these prophets, whose names
    you recognize?
  • 24:57 - 24:59
    Let's see what they say.
  • 24:59 - 25:01
    (Jason) I'll be reading
  • 25:01 - 25:02
from the New King James Version,
  • 25:02 - 25:05
    Ezra, chapter 5, verses 1 and 2:
  • 25:35 - 25:38
(Derek) Now, it doesn't tell them,
    exactly, here,
  • 25:38 - 25:39
    what they prophesied,
  • 25:39 - 25:43
but what was the response to the prophecy?
  • 25:43 - 25:47
"Go to work," "Let's go and build," right?
  • 25:47 - 25:48
So the prophecy must have been
  • 25:48 - 25:51
    somewhat related to, "No weapon
  • 25:51 - 25:54
    that's fashioned against you
    will prosper," right?
  • 25:54 - 25:55
    "You need to keep doing
  • 25:55 - 25:57
what God has asked you to do."
  • 25:57 - 25:58
    (Travis) It's amazing to me,
  • 25:58 - 26:00
as we finish reading in verse 2,
  • 26:00 - 26:02
    that the prophets of God
    were there helping them.
  • 26:02 - 26:05
    You know, being a messenger
  • 26:05 - 26:06
doesn't mean just being a voice.
  • 26:06 - 26:08
It means getting your hands dirty as well,
  • 26:08 - 26:11
getting in there and being involved
    in the work.
  • 26:11 - 26:12
    (Derek) So, helping them,
  • 26:12 - 26:13
    not just by prophesying,
  • 26:13 - 26:15
    but actually construction?
  • 26:15 - 26:17
    (Travis) Right, laboring.
  • 26:17 - 26:18
    (Derek) Yes, Marcus.
  • 26:18 - 26:20
    (Marcus) And also encouragement.
  • 26:20 - 26:22
The biggest thing is that they were
  • 26:22 - 26:24
raised up at a time when God
  • 26:24 - 26:26
knew and saw that His people
  • 26:26 - 26:28
were kind of depressed, kind of low,
  • 26:28 - 26:30
    that outside forces were trying
  • 26:30 - 26:33
to stop them from completing the work.
  • 26:33 - 26:34
    And also, too, they were
  • 26:34 - 26:36
kind of a little bit resting
    on their laurels.
  • 26:36 - 26:38
So God is like, "Come on,
  • 26:38 - 26:40
get back to work, get back to work."
  • 26:40 - 26:42
That's kind of what they're saying, too.
  • 26:42 - 26:45
(Derek) Do you recognize those names,
    Haggai and Zechariah?
  • 26:45 - 26:46
    (Team) Yes.
  • 26:46 - 26:47
(Derek) So, let's go to the book
  • 26:47 - 26:49
that bears Haggai's name, chapter 1,
  • 26:49 - 26:51
    and we'll read there
  • 26:51 - 26:53
    a specific message from God
  • 26:53 - 26:57
    that was delivered to Zerubbabel
    by the prophet.
  • 26:57 - 26:59
    Travis, would you read,
  • 26:59 - 27:01
    starting in chapter 1,
  • 27:01 - 27:02
    verses 1 through 11.
  • 27:02 - 27:04
    What's the message that God
  • 27:04 - 27:07
    brings to Zerubbabel?
  • 27:07 - 27:08
    (Travis) And I'll be reading
  • 27:08 - 27:10
from the New King James Version:
  • 28:52 - 28:55
    (Derek) What's the Lord saying
    through the prophet?
  • 28:55 - 28:58
    In one sentence, yes, Puia.
  • 28:58 - 29:00
    (Puia) The lack of prosperity
    in their land
  • 29:00 - 29:01
is because they have been neglecting
  • 29:01 - 29:04
    to put God's interests first.
  • 29:04 - 29:05
    (Derek) So, put God first.
  • 29:05 - 29:07
"Seek first the Kingdom," Jesus said,
  • 29:07 - 29:09
and the other things you need...?
  • 29:09 - 29:10
(Team) Shall be added unto you.
  • 29:10 - 29:12
(Derek) Will be added to you.
  • 29:12 - 29:13
So basically, and that's why we know
  • 29:13 - 29:15
they got up and started building,
  • 29:15 - 29:18
he was saying, "That's what you need
    to be doing."
  • 29:18 - 29:20
Well, let's see how they responded,
  • 29:20 - 29:21
    at least according
  • 29:21 - 29:23
    to Prophet Haggai's report.
  • 29:23 - 29:25
    Marcus, could you continue reading
  • 29:25 - 29:27
    in Haggai, chapter 1,
  • 29:27 - 29:30
    verses 12 through 15?
  • 29:30 - 29:32
(Marcus) Sure, and I'll be reading
  • 29:32 - 29:33
    from the King James Version:
  • 30:25 - 30:26
    (Derek) In other words,
  • 30:26 - 30:28
    when they determined -
  • 30:28 - 30:30
this is an important life principle -
  • 30:30 - 30:33
when they determined that they would obey
  • 30:33 - 30:35
what God asked them to do,
  • 30:35 - 30:38
what did God do for them?
  • 30:38 - 30:40
    He what? He stirred up?
  • 30:40 - 30:41
    What does that mean,
  • 30:41 - 30:42
    "stirred up their spirits"?
  • 30:42 - 30:43
    (Gladys) Encouraged them.
  • 30:43 - 30:45
    (Derek) He encouraged them, right?
  • 30:45 - 30:46
    He gave them a...?
  • 30:46 - 30:47
    (Marcus) Renewed vigor.
  • 30:47 - 30:49
(Derek) A renewed vigor, thank you,
  • 30:49 - 30:50
    to say, "You know what?
  • 30:50 - 30:53
With God, we can do this.
  • 30:53 - 30:54
We're going to do what God
  • 30:54 - 30:55
    has asked us to do."
  • 30:55 - 30:57
    But it was a response
  • 30:57 - 31:00
    to a word of...I don't know
  • 31:00 - 31:01
if "rebuke" is the right word,
  • 31:01 - 31:03
but it was like, "Hey, you're
  • 31:03 - 31:06
    a little bit distracted building
  • 31:06 - 31:10
    your condominiums here," right,
  • 31:10 - 31:13
"while My house is in ruins."
  • 31:13 - 31:14
    And that's not just saying,
  • 31:14 - 31:15
"I want My house before yours."
  • 31:15 - 31:17
    It's saying, "What's your
  • 31:17 - 31:19
    top priority in life?"
  • 31:19 - 31:22
Can you think of a time in your life
  • 31:22 - 31:23
    when God sent a Word
  • 31:23 - 31:26
    to you through a prophet,
  • 31:26 - 31:28
and probably it will be a prophet
  • 31:28 - 31:30
who has written something down, right -
  • 31:30 - 31:32
God could still call a person to give you
  • 31:32 - 31:34
    a prophetic Word, too, I suppose -
  • 31:34 - 31:36
but when God kind of redirected
  • 31:36 - 31:39
    your course through His Word,
  • 31:39 - 31:41
    and as you look back
  • 31:41 - 31:42
    you thank Him for that.
  • 31:42 - 31:46
    Anybody, can you think
    about a time? Billy.
  • 31:46 - 31:48
(Billy) So, as you know, it was like
  • 31:48 - 31:50
    the recent elections that happened
  • 31:50 - 31:52
    in the United States...
  • 31:52 - 31:53
    (Derek) We're evergreen here,
  • 31:53 - 31:55
so we don't know about recent elections,
  • 31:55 - 31:58
but go ahead and share your story.
  • 31:58 - 31:59
    (Billy) So, my personal story
  • 31:59 - 32:00
    is that I was struggling
  • 32:00 - 32:02
with the person who got elected,
  • 32:02 - 32:04
and I felt sometimes a resentment.
  • 32:04 - 32:08
And then God sent me a Word in Matthew 5,
  • 32:08 - 32:10
    talking about loving your enemies.
  • 32:10 - 32:12
    And that was very radical,
  • 32:12 - 32:13
    because it was somebody
  • 32:13 - 32:15
that I felt like was going
  • 32:15 - 32:17
    the opposite direction in terms
  • 32:17 - 32:19
    of encouraging hate,
  • 32:19 - 32:21
and now God is asking me
  • 32:21 - 32:23
to add that person to my prayer list.
  • 32:23 - 32:24
(Derek) So, if a person is watching
  • 32:24 - 32:27
    from Venezuela or they're watching
  • 32:27 - 32:30
    from the continent of Africa,
  • 32:30 - 32:32
    they're going to apply that
  • 32:32 - 32:33
    to their own situation.
  • 32:33 - 32:36
What if a leader comes into power
  • 32:36 - 32:39
that I don't like, you know?
  • 32:39 - 32:41
I may live in Thailand or I may live,
  • 32:41 - 32:44
just, you know, they may have a new king,
  • 32:44 - 32:47
or they may have a new president
    or prime minister,
  • 32:47 - 32:50
and you're saying that the Spirit of God
  • 32:50 - 32:53
said to you, "You need to pray
    for that person."
  • 32:53 - 32:54
    (Billy) Especially in Matthew 5,
  • 32:54 - 32:56
    talking about, you know,
  • 32:56 - 32:57
we need to pray for our enemies.
  • 32:57 - 32:59
    (Derek) "Love your enemies,
  • 32:59 - 33:00
bless those who curse you," yeah.
  • 33:00 - 33:01
    (Billy) Exactly, so...
  • 33:01 - 33:03
    (Derek) Do good to those
  • 33:03 - 33:04
    who spitefully use you, right?
  • 33:04 - 33:10
So, okay, that was a lesson
    that you learned
  • 33:10 - 33:12
    in that experience. Gladys?
  • 33:12 - 33:14
    (Gladys) Yes, a while ago
  • 33:14 - 33:18
I was called to teach kindergarten,
  • 33:18 - 33:20
and I was teaching upper graders,
  • 33:20 - 33:23
and I didn't feel like I could do it.
  • 33:23 - 33:25
And I cried and fought with God.
  • 33:25 - 33:27
I was saying, "I don't want to do it."
  • 33:27 - 33:30
But God kept insisting in my heart
  • 33:30 - 33:32
that that's where He wanted me to be.
  • 33:32 - 33:35
And the words of Jeremiah 33:3
  • 33:35 - 33:36
    gave me encouragement
  • 33:36 - 33:38
where He said, "Call unto Me,
  • 33:38 - 33:40
and I will answer, and I will show you
  • 33:40 - 33:41
    great and mighty things
  • 33:41 - 33:42
    that you don't know."
  • 33:42 - 33:44
    And those words just,
  • 33:44 - 33:46
    like, changed my heart
  • 33:46 - 33:47
    in a position that now
  • 33:47 - 33:50
I wouldn't see myself, you know...
  • 33:50 - 33:51
I look back and say, "Wow."
  • 33:51 - 33:53
    God really made a change,
  • 33:53 - 33:55
    not only in my life
  • 33:55 - 33:57
but the direction that I was going."
  • 33:57 - 34:01
(Derek) That's one of my wife's
    favorite passages
  • 34:01 - 34:04
from Jeremiah, by the way, Jeremiah 33:3.
  • 34:04 - 34:07
And for those of you watching the program
  • 34:07 - 34:10
or those on the team that couldn't see,
  • 34:10 - 34:14
Gladys did not read that; it's inside.
  • 34:14 - 34:17
She quoted it, "Call to Me,
  • 34:17 - 34:20
    and I will answer you,
  • 34:20 - 34:21
and show you great and mighty things,
  • 34:21 - 34:23
    which you do not know."
  • 34:23 - 34:26
So, that Word was in her heart.
  • 34:26 - 34:27
    Now, the question is,
  • 34:27 - 34:29
just to help with the story,
  • 34:29 - 34:31
    did you know that Word
  • 34:31 - 34:33
before He brought it to your remembrance?
  • 34:33 - 34:34
    (Gladys) Of course.
  • 34:34 - 34:37
(Derek) Why do you say, "Of course"?
  • 34:37 - 34:39
Was that useful that that Word was in her?
  • 34:39 - 34:40
    (Gladys, Team) Yes.
  • 34:40 - 34:42
    (Derek) Absolutely, right,
  • 34:42 - 34:44
    because the Holy Spirit
  • 34:44 - 34:46
brought it to her remembrance, Abigail,
  • 34:46 - 34:48
    you're absolutely right.
  • 34:48 - 34:50
If it's not there, He can't
  • 34:50 - 34:52
bring it to your remembrance, all right?
  • 34:52 - 34:55
So that became a Word to you,
    an encouraging Word.
  • 34:55 - 34:56
    Someone else, where God
  • 34:56 - 34:58
    brought a Word to you?
  • 34:58 - 35:00
You didn't have the live prophet,
  • 35:00 - 35:02
    Jeremiah, because he sleeps
  • 35:02 - 35:04
    until the Resurrection Day, right?
  • 35:04 - 35:06
    But through the written testimony
    of Jeremiah,
  • 35:06 - 35:09
that Word came to you. Okay, Travis?
  • 35:09 - 35:10
    (Travis) Through my walk
  • 35:10 - 35:13
    coming back to God,
  • 35:13 - 35:15
you know, sometimes you stumble and fall,
  • 35:15 - 35:16
    and you make mistakes.
  • 35:16 - 35:18
And I would always be reminded,
  • 35:18 - 35:19
    the Holy Spirit would bring
  • 35:19 - 35:22
    1 John, chapter 2, verse 1.
  • 35:22 - 35:23
    "My [brethren], I write
  • 35:23 - 35:25
these things to you that you
    may not sin."
  • 35:25 - 35:27
    "My little children," he says,
  • 35:27 - 35:28
    "that you may not sin,
  • 35:28 - 35:31
but if you do, you have an Advocate
    with the Father."
  • 35:31 - 35:34
    (Derek) And that's Jesus Christ
    the righteous One, right?
  • 35:34 - 35:35
    (Travis) Jesus Christ the righteous.
  • 35:35 - 35:37
And then it would just remind me
  • 35:37 - 35:38
that I need to go back
  • 35:38 - 35:39
to the foot of the cross,
  • 35:39 - 35:41
and then another verse would come
    into my head,
  • 35:41 - 35:43
"Thy word have I hid in my heart,
  • 35:43 - 35:45
that I might not sin against Thee."
  • 35:45 - 35:47
And the Holy Spirit's encouraged me,
  • 35:47 - 35:49
"Hide the Word of God in your heart.
  • 35:49 - 35:51
Hide the Word of God in your heart,"...
  • 35:51 - 35:53
(Derek) And right before 1 John
  • 35:53 - 35:54
    about, "I pray that you
  • 35:54 - 35:56
    would not sin, little children,"
  • 35:56 - 35:58
right before that, in chapter 1, says,
  • 35:58 - 36:00
    "If we confess our sins..."
  • 36:00 - 36:01
    (Team) He is faithful...
  • 36:01 - 36:03
(Derek) "He is faithful and just
    to forgive us, and to..."?
  • 36:03 - 36:05
    (Team) Cleanse us.
  • 36:05 - 36:07
    (Derek) "Cleanse us from all
    unrighteousness."
  • 36:07 - 36:09
So that word comes as an encouragement.
  • 36:09 - 36:10
    And apparently Zerubbabel
  • 36:10 - 36:13
and Joshua the high priest and others
  • 36:13 - 36:15
    needed a little encouragement,
  • 36:15 - 36:16
    and God sent the prophets.
  • 36:16 - 36:19
The lesson that I'm learning is,
  • 36:19 - 36:20
if we listen to the prophets
  • 36:20 - 36:29
during the times of ease and calm times,
  • 36:29 - 36:32
then when we really need that Word,
  • 36:32 - 36:34
the Holy Spirit will bring it back to us.
  • 36:34 - 36:38
    Well, we're going to hyperspace
    to Nehemiah now;
  • 36:38 - 36:40
    we're around 444 B.C.,
  • 36:40 - 36:41
    and we're going to go
  • 36:41 - 36:43
    to chapter 4 of Nehemiah.
  • 36:43 - 36:45
    All the way through Nehemiah,
  • 36:45 - 36:47
    he's going to experience opposition,
  • 36:47 - 36:51
but I'd like to look specifically
    at chapter 4
  • 36:51 - 36:55
    and see how he responded
    to the opposition
  • 36:55 - 36:56
    while he clearly knew
  • 36:56 - 36:58
he was doing the work of God.
  • 36:58 - 37:00
    Stephanie, could you read
  • 37:00 - 37:02
the first three verses for us,
  • 37:02 - 37:05
and then I'll have someone else
  • 37:05 - 37:06
    continue from verse 4.
  • 37:06 - 37:08
(Stephanie) All right, and I'm reading
  • 37:08 - 37:09
    from the King James Version:
  • 37:55 - 37:56
    (Derek) These enemies,
  • 37:56 - 37:58
    what are they doing?
  • 37:58 - 37:59
    (Team) Mocking.
  • 37:59 - 38:02
(Derek) They're mocking; is that all?
  • 38:02 - 38:03
    (Stephanie) Trying to discourage.
  • 38:03 - 38:06
    (Derek) Yeah, they're trying
    to discourage, trying to...?
  • 38:06 - 38:07
    (Team Member) Undermine.
  • 38:07 - 38:12
    (Derek) Undermine, intimidate, right?
  • 38:12 - 38:16
Let's see, Heide, how Nehemiah responds,
  • 38:16 - 38:20
    verses 4 and 5 of chapter 4.
  • 38:20 - 38:21
    (Heide) I'll be reading
  • 38:21 - 38:23
from the New King James Version,
    and it says:
  • 38:41 - 38:42
    (Derek) In other words,
  • 38:42 - 38:43
    to use the language
  • 38:43 - 38:46
    of our earlier conversation,
    let them be...?
  • 38:46 - 38:48
(Gladys) Caught in their own trap.
  • 38:48 - 38:50
(Derek) Caught in their own trap, right?
  • 38:50 - 38:53
"We're doing what You wanted us to do."
  • 38:53 - 38:57
    But notice again, intimidation, mocking,
  • 38:57 - 38:59
    and what's Nehemiah's first response?
  • 38:59 - 39:01
    (Team) Prayer.
  • 39:01 - 39:05
(Derek) Right? Call out to God.
  • 39:05 - 39:09
    Next verse, Travis, could you
    read verse 6?
  • 39:09 - 39:10
    (Travis) And I'll be reading
  • 39:10 - 39:12
from the New King James Version:
  • 39:20 - 39:22
    (Derek) God gave them encouragement,
  • 39:22 - 39:24
and they said, "We're not going to worry
  • 39:24 - 39:26
    about these people opposing us;
  • 39:26 - 39:28
they'll be caught in their own trap.
  • 39:28 - 39:31
And they continued to make progress.
  • 39:31 - 39:34
Billy, could you read verses 7 and 8?
  • 39:34 - 39:37
We're still in Nehemiah, chapter 4,
    verses 7 and 8.
  • 39:37 - 39:39
    (Billy) Sure, I'll be reading
  • 39:39 - 39:40
    from the King James Version:
  • 40:08 - 40:10
(Derek) All right, so, did you notice
  • 40:10 - 40:12
    that the number of people
  • 40:12 - 40:14
    in opposition increased again?
  • 40:14 - 40:15
    (Team) Yes.
  • 40:15 - 40:16
(Derek) Now we've got all kinds
  • 40:16 - 40:18
of other people being added to the list.
  • 40:18 - 40:20
    It was two, then it's three;
  • 40:20 - 40:21
    how many is it now?
  • 40:21 - 40:25
    And these represent groups
    of people, right?
  • 40:25 - 40:28
And verse 9, what did you notice?
  • 40:28 - 40:30
    What's the first thing
  • 40:30 - 40:31
    that Nehemiah does?
  • 40:31 - 40:32
    (Team) Pray!
  • 40:32 - 40:35
(Derek) You got it now, right?
  • 40:35 - 40:36
The first thing he does -
  • 40:36 - 40:39
    he prays to God, and...?
  • 40:39 - 40:41
    (Stephanie) Set a watch.
  • 40:41 - 40:43
(Derek) Help me with that, unpack that.
  • 40:43 - 40:44
    (Heide) I pray, but I can't,
  • 40:44 - 40:46
if I have an exam, say, "Lord,
  • 40:46 - 40:47
help me to get an A," and not study.
  • 40:47 - 40:49
    They also did their part.
  • 40:49 - 40:51
(Derek) I hope every student in the world
  • 40:51 - 40:53
    just heard what Heide said.
  • 40:53 - 40:54
    Is it good to pray
  • 40:54 - 40:56
if you're getting ready for an exam?
  • 40:56 - 40:56
    (Team) Yes.
  • 40:56 - 40:58
(Derek) Is it good to study?
  • 40:58 - 40:59
    (Team) Yes.
  • 40:59 - 41:01
    (Derek) Applying it to Nehemiah.
  • 41:01 - 41:03
    He's under attack; in fact,
  • 41:03 - 41:05
they're actually conspiring to do what?
  • 41:05 - 41:09
    To attack and create confusion,
    my Bible says.
  • 41:09 - 41:10
    So, good to pray?
  • 41:10 - 41:12
    (Team) Yes.
  • 41:12 - 41:14
    (Derek) Good to set watch-people
    on the wall?
  • 41:14 - 41:15
    (Team) Yes.
  • 41:15 - 41:18
    (Derek) Absolutely, as we see
  • 41:18 - 41:22
the wisdom of this leader responding.
  • 41:22 - 41:23
    They also, though, had
  • 41:23 - 41:25
    some internal opposition.
  • 41:25 - 41:28
Look in verse 12; Liza, could you read
  • 41:28 - 41:32
chapter 4 of Nehemiah and verse 12?
  • 41:32 - 41:33
    (Liza) I'll be reading
  • 41:33 - 41:35
from the New King James Version:
  • 41:45 - 41:50
(Derek) What?! What was the little -
  • 41:50 - 41:51
    what would we call this?
  • 41:51 - 41:56
    Like a mantra, right, a little -
    what's the word?
  • 41:56 - 41:59
A little anthem or, you know?
  • 41:59 - 42:02
It's like, what do you call that
  • 42:02 - 42:05
when you keep flashing the same message?
  • 42:05 - 42:06
    (Team Member) Repetition.
  • 42:06 - 42:08
    (Derek) Yeah, it's propaganda;
  • 42:08 - 42:11
that's the word I was thinking,
    propaganda.
  • 42:11 - 42:12
    What's the propaganda?
  • 42:12 - 42:14
(Marcus) "They're going to come upon you."
  • 42:14 - 42:17
(Derek) Yeah, "Whatever place you turn,
  • 42:17 - 42:19
    they'll be upon us."
  • 42:19 - 42:20
    "Whatever place you turn,
  • 42:20 - 42:22
    they'll be upon us."
  • 42:22 - 42:23
    "Whatever place...," how many times?
  • 42:23 - 42:24
    (Team) Ten times.
  • 42:24 - 42:27
    (Derek) "Whatever place you turn..."
  • 42:27 - 42:31
These are not the people out there.
  • 42:31 - 42:33
    These are the people...?
  • 42:33 - 42:34
    (Gladys) Inside.
  • 42:34 - 42:37
    (Derek) In here. Lesson? Travis?
  • 42:37 - 42:38
    (Travis) I was just thinking
  • 42:38 - 42:39
    of Caleb and Joshua.
  • 42:39 - 42:41
    When they came back,
  • 42:41 - 42:43
there were 10 people that said,
  • 42:43 - 42:44
    "There are giants in the land;
  • 42:44 - 42:46
we'll never be able to go and take it."
  • 42:46 - 42:48
    "We'll never...," you know?
  • 42:48 - 42:49
    I'm sure there's no correlation,
  • 42:49 - 42:51
but it just seems funny that people
  • 42:51 - 42:53
from the inside, their own people...
  • 42:53 - 42:54
    (Derek) And there were 10.
  • 42:54 - 42:56
    (Travis) Yeah, 10 discouraging them.
  • 42:56 - 42:58
    (Derek) That's propaganda, too, right?
  • 42:58 - 42:59
    It was negative propaganda
  • 42:59 - 43:01
    over and over again.
  • 43:01 - 43:02
    It's almost like having,
  • 43:02 - 43:05
today we might say you have
    like a megaphone,
  • 43:05 - 43:07
    and you're just shouting
  • 43:07 - 43:09
    over the workplace, "It's
    going to fall down,"
  • 43:09 - 43:10
    "It's going to fall down,"
  • 43:10 - 43:12
    "It's going to fall down."
  • 43:12 - 43:13
    How do you handle
  • 43:13 - 43:16
    that kind of propaganda,
  • 43:16 - 43:18
    which is deliberately intended
  • 43:18 - 43:21
to hinder what God wants you to do?
  • 43:21 - 43:23
    What's the word?!
  • 43:23 - 43:26
    (Team) Pray!
  • 43:26 - 43:27
    (Derek) Pray and then what?
  • 43:27 - 43:28
    (Team) Do the work.
  • 43:28 - 43:30
    (Derek) Do the work?
  • 43:30 - 43:31
    (Team) Move forward.
  • 43:31 - 43:32
    (Derek) Get earplugs?
  • 43:32 - 43:38
    Noise-cancelling headphones?
  • 43:38 - 43:42
You do whatever you need to do,
    having prayed,
  • 43:42 - 43:44
to keep the work going, right?
  • 43:44 - 43:44
    (Team) Yes.
  • 43:44 - 43:46
    (Derek) Does that make sense?
  • 43:46 - 43:50
What are you thinking about this situation
  • 43:50 - 43:52
    from a human perspective, Abigail?
  • 43:52 - 43:55
    (Abigail) That's it's really...
  • 43:55 - 43:59
In some point, it's supposed to be
    so discouraging,
  • 43:59 - 44:02
but it also tells us the importance
  • 44:02 - 44:05
    of being in constant communication
    with God,
  • 44:05 - 44:08
to ask Him to empower us
  • 44:08 - 44:10
and give us the zeal to go ahead
  • 44:10 - 44:13
and do what He has called us to do.
  • 44:13 - 44:15
Because, regardless if we want it or not,
  • 44:15 - 44:17
    we're going to have opposition
  • 44:17 - 44:19
coming from all sorts of directions.
  • 44:19 - 44:22
    And sometimes the strongest ones
    are from within.
  • 44:22 - 44:25
So we have to be constantly praying.
  • 44:25 - 44:26
(Derek) I guess we should be praying,
  • 44:26 - 44:28
    and, you know, that somehow,
  • 44:28 - 44:30
by the grace of God, that the enemies
  • 44:30 - 44:32
    either from without or within,
  • 44:32 - 44:33
    would look and say,
  • 44:33 - 44:35
"We just don't understand these people.
  • 44:35 - 44:38
    They're unstoppable," right?
  • 44:38 - 44:39
    "They're just so focused
  • 44:39 - 44:41
on what God has asked them to do
  • 44:41 - 44:44
    that nothing we're doing
  • 44:44 - 44:46
    is slowing them down." Marcus?
  • 44:46 - 44:48
(Marcus) But then that would also point
  • 44:48 - 44:53
to that there is not just a human element
    at work here.
  • 44:53 - 44:55
And, of course, we come to that conclusion
  • 44:55 - 44:56
    later on in the chapter.
  • 44:56 - 44:57
    They come to that conclusion,
  • 44:57 - 45:00
but that God was within the work
  • 45:00 - 45:02
and with the work the whole entire time.
  • 45:02 - 45:03
    (Derek) So, let's keep
  • 45:03 - 45:04
    going in the chapter.
  • 45:04 - 45:06
    We're still in chapter 4.
  • 45:06 - 45:07
    This is ancient history,
  • 45:07 - 45:10
but it's also modern lessons for us,
  • 45:10 - 45:12
    and, Stephanie, could you read
  • 45:12 - 45:15
    verses 13 through 18 of chapter 4
  • 45:15 - 45:16
    and see how Nehemiah
  • 45:16 - 45:18
    responds to the opposition.
  • 45:18 - 45:20
    As Abigail has mentioned,
  • 45:20 - 45:22
    it's both external and internal.
  • 45:22 - 45:25
Let's see how this leader of God responds.
  • 45:25 - 45:27
(Stephanie) The King James Version says:
  • 46:58 - 47:01
(Derek) Wow, that's pretty intense, right?
  • 47:01 - 47:03
You have a tool in one hand
  • 47:03 - 47:07
and a sword in the other hand.
  • 47:07 - 47:11
What would that look like today? Liza?
  • 47:11 - 47:13
    (Liza) I think that's a good lesson
  • 47:13 - 47:14
    in that, in everything
  • 47:14 - 47:15
that God does in our lives,
  • 47:15 - 47:17
we have to be on offense and defense,
  • 47:17 - 47:19
just to use a sports metaphor.
  • 47:19 - 47:20
    Like, we're moving forward
  • 47:20 - 47:21
    to do God's work,
  • 47:21 - 47:23
but at all times we're alert,
  • 47:23 - 47:24
    we're on our toes,
  • 47:24 - 47:25
    we're not letting the enemy
  • 47:25 - 47:26
    catch us off guard,
  • 47:26 - 47:29
so we're always offense and defense
    at all times.
  • 47:29 - 47:30
    (Derek) All right. Travis?
  • 47:30 - 47:33
(Travis) The Bible is the sword, right,
    it's our sword,
  • 47:33 - 47:34
    so we can work diligently
  • 47:34 - 47:37
but keep the sword in our hand, right?
  • 47:37 - 47:38
    The sword of truth.
  • 47:38 - 47:41
(Derek) So you would see that this...
  • 47:41 - 47:42
You don't want us all to be, like,
  • 47:42 - 47:44
    having weapons and whatnot.
  • 47:44 - 47:47
    You think the spiritual weapon...
  • 47:47 - 47:48
    But they actually did have
  • 47:48 - 47:51
spears and swords because they were
  • 47:51 - 47:53
    saying, "You come to kill
  • 47:53 - 47:55
    our wives and our children,
  • 47:55 - 48:00
and we're going to defend ourselves."
  • 48:00 - 48:01
    Of course, whether they
  • 48:01 - 48:03
would have needed to or not,
  • 48:03 - 48:04
    God could have done...
  • 48:04 - 48:06
He could have had an angel
  • 48:06 - 48:07
    fly over the enemy.
  • 48:07 - 48:10
But they were sending a visual message
  • 48:10 - 48:13
that, "We're not coming down," right?
  • 48:13 - 48:14
    Puia, could you read on
  • 48:14 - 48:17
for us verses 19 to 23.
  • 48:17 - 48:21
It's actually quite an epic drama,
    isn't it,
  • 48:21 - 48:23
with all kinds of scheming and traps.
  • 48:23 - 48:26
And the people of God are saying,
  • 48:26 - 48:27
"No, we're going to keep doing
  • 48:27 - 48:28
what God's asked us to do."
  • 48:28 - 48:32
    Nehemiah, chapter 4, verses 19 to 23.
  • 48:32 - 48:33
(Puia) All right, I'll be reading
  • 48:33 - 48:35
from the New King James Version:
  • 49:21 - 49:26
(Derek) No nap times, no personal days.
  • 49:26 - 49:28
They only took their clothes off
  • 49:28 - 49:29
    when they got so dirty
  • 49:29 - 49:32
    they needed to wash them.
  • 49:32 - 49:35
So, you mentioned that earlier, Travis,
  • 49:35 - 49:37
    about servant leadership.
  • 49:37 - 49:39
    What do you see here?
  • 49:39 - 49:41
(Travis) Something really stood out to me,
  • 49:41 - 49:43
"The work is great and extensive,
  • 49:43 - 49:44
    and we're separated."
  • 49:44 - 49:45
    The harvest is great,
  • 49:45 - 49:47
    and the laborers are few.
  • 49:47 - 49:48
    We've all been called
  • 49:48 - 49:50
into this harvest work for souls,
  • 49:50 - 49:54
and we need to get back
    on the wall, right?
  • 49:54 - 49:57
    Labor together; we'll face opposition,
  • 49:57 - 49:58
but stay focused on our mission,
  • 49:58 - 50:01
keep the sword of the Spirit
    in our hands
  • 50:01 - 50:02
    and focus on Jesus,
  • 50:02 - 50:04
    the promises of Jesus.
  • 50:04 - 50:05
(Derek) So, I'm going to give you
  • 50:05 - 50:06
    a chance to think.
  • 50:06 - 50:09
    That was 2,400-and-some years ago.
  • 50:09 - 50:12
I'd like you think about your own life,
  • 50:12 - 50:16
a time when God sent you on a mission,
  • 50:16 - 50:17
    and you experienced
  • 50:17 - 50:19
    some intense opposition,
  • 50:19 - 50:22
which you may not have particularly liked,
  • 50:22 - 50:25
either from external or internal sources.
  • 50:25 - 50:26
And yet, as you look back,
  • 50:26 - 50:29
you see how God was with you.
  • 50:29 - 50:30
    Puia, you're smiling.
  • 50:30 - 50:32
Do you have a story that you could share?
  • 50:32 - 50:34
(Puia) I do. In the previous study
  • 50:34 - 50:37
I quickly mentioned about a movement
  • 50:37 - 50:39
that I started with some of my friends
  • 50:39 - 50:40
    here in the United States
  • 50:40 - 50:44
for my fellow Mizo young people.
  • 50:44 - 50:46
God had put a burden on my heart
  • 50:46 - 50:48
    to do something, a ministry
  • 50:48 - 50:49
or a movement of some kind
  • 50:49 - 50:51
for my fellow Mizo young people
  • 50:51 - 50:52
    because we're all scattered
  • 50:52 - 50:53
    across the United States,
  • 50:53 - 50:56
    and we're in different parts
    of the conferences
  • 50:56 - 50:57
    and different parts
  • 50:57 - 50:59
    of the division itself.
  • 50:59 - 51:00
    (Derek) So let me just...
  • 51:00 - 51:02
    because some people...You say "Mizo."
  • 51:02 - 51:06
Mizoram is a territory in Northeast India

    and Western Myanmar,
  • 51:08 - 51:11
    And there are Mizo people...
  • 51:11 - 51:12
    (Puia) Who have immigrated here.
  • 51:12 - 51:13
    (Derek) ...come here.
  • 51:13 - 51:15
And God has put on your heart
  • 51:15 - 51:17
    a special burden to miinister
  • 51:17 - 51:18
    to these young people.
  • 51:18 - 51:20
    (Puia) Yes, because immigrants
  • 51:20 - 51:23
face an extra layer of challenge
  • 51:23 - 51:24
    when it comes to living
  • 51:24 - 51:26
    and settling here.
  • 51:26 - 51:28
And so, I prayed about it,
  • 51:28 - 51:31
and I talked to different pastors,
  • 51:31 - 51:32
    different youth leaders
  • 51:32 - 51:34
    and different churches.
  • 51:34 - 51:35
    And we had a meeting
  • 51:35 - 51:38
    where we talked about plans
  • 51:38 - 51:40
    to start a federation
  • 51:40 - 51:44
so that we can organize events
  • 51:44 - 51:45
    like a spiritual retreat
  • 51:45 - 51:47
where we can bring in our youth
  • 51:47 - 51:48
and teach them about the Bible
  • 51:48 - 51:50
and train them for mission work
  • 51:50 - 51:51

  • 51:53 - 51:54

  • 51:54 - 51:55
    (Puia) Mizo language.
  • 51:55 - 51:57
    (Derek) Okay. Does that sound
  • 51:57 - 51:58
    like something God might ask
  • 51:58 - 52:01
a young leader who speaks Mizo to do?
  • 52:01 - 52:02
    (Team) Yes.
  • 52:02 - 52:05
    (Derek) Okay. Why would anyone
  • 52:05 - 52:09
want to oppose something like that,
    do you think?
  • 52:09 - 52:11
We don't want to be negative
  • 52:11 - 52:12
    because sometimes people say,
  • 52:12 - 52:14
    "Well, that's too complicated,"
  • 52:14 - 52:15
    or, "You'll never build it."
  • 52:15 - 52:16
    "If you stand on it,
  • 52:16 - 52:20
    the wall will fall down,"
  • 52:20 - 52:23
or, "You might offend someone." Abigail?
  • 52:23 - 52:25
    (Abigail) I'm thinking, the reason
  • 52:25 - 52:27
    why someone would oppose that
  • 52:27 - 52:29
is because you are doing this
  • 52:29 - 52:31
to draw many youth to God
  • 52:31 - 52:33
and to uplift the name of God.
  • 52:33 - 52:38
And the enemy will put that negativity
  • 52:38 - 52:40
    in somebody's heart
  • 52:40 - 52:42
    to stop that from happening.
  • 52:42 - 52:43
    And they may discourage you
  • 52:43 - 52:45
and tell you, "This is never
  • 52:45 - 52:47
    going to actually be successful."
  • 52:47 - 52:49
    But if you keep pushing
  • 52:49 - 52:52
and you allow God to be your sword,
  • 52:52 - 52:54
then you are going to be able to achieve
  • 52:54 - 52:58
even greater things for His namesake,
    for His glory.
  • 52:58 - 53:00
(Derek) I'm going to come to Liza's point
  • 53:00 - 53:01
    and then back to Puia.
  • 53:01 - 53:03
Is it possible someone might oppose it
  • 53:03 - 53:05
    because they think, "I wish
  • 53:05 - 53:06
    I'd thought of that,"
  • 53:06 - 53:09
"Wish that it was my idea,"
    is that possible?
  • 53:09 - 53:10
    (Team) Yes.
  • 53:10 - 53:12
(Derek) Or, "Well, you're not doing it
  • 53:12 - 53:15
for this group of people, for my group,
  • 53:15 - 53:18
how come he's doing it for his group?"
  • 53:18 - 53:20
There are lots of reasons, right? Liza?
  • 53:20 - 53:22
(Liza) I was going to say that,
  • 53:22 - 53:24
that it probably is jealousy or envy,
  • 53:24 - 53:25
    like, "Oh," you know,
  • 53:25 - 53:26
"look at that person; they're willing.
  • 53:26 - 53:28
    I could have done that,
  • 53:28 - 53:29
but I probably was not willing
  • 53:29 - 53:31
or did not accept God's call in my life."
  • 53:31 - 53:32
And so we see that a lot
  • 53:32 - 53:34
    with these types of oppositions,
  • 53:34 - 53:35
    especially from within.
  • 53:35 - 53:36
    It's those people who,
  • 53:36 - 53:38
    their hearts are hardened,
  • 53:38 - 53:39
    they didn't follow through
  • 53:39 - 53:40
what God had called them to,
  • 53:40 - 53:42
    and when someone else
    picks up that mantle,
  • 53:42 - 53:45
it's that jealousy of, "Why them?"
  • 53:45 - 53:46
And they try to discourage that.
  • 53:46 - 53:47
    (Derek) So we don't know
  • 53:47 - 53:49
what it is in this situation,
  • 53:49 - 53:50
but there may be a lot of things.
  • 53:50 - 53:52
I want to give you the end
  • 53:52 - 53:53
    of Nehemiah's story,
  • 53:53 - 53:54
and then we're going to come back
  • 53:54 - 53:56
to the end of the Mizo story, okay?
  • 53:56 - 54:00
    Nehemiah 6, verses 15 and 16,
  • 54:00 - 54:06
Gladys, could you read that for us,
    Nehemiah 6:15-16?
  • 54:06 - 54:08
    (Gladys) Nehemiah, I'm reading
  • 54:08 - 54:10
    from the New International Version,
  • 54:10 - 54:15
    Nehemiah, chapter 6, verses 15 and 16:
  • 54:35 - 54:36
    (Team) Amen.
  • 54:36 - 54:38
(Derek) My Bible says, "This work
  • 54:38 - 54:39
    was done by our God,"
  • 54:39 - 54:40
and yet someone would say, "Yes,
  • 54:40 - 54:42
    but He used hands, too,"
  • 54:42 - 54:46
    including hands of prophets, right?
  • 54:46 - 54:52
Fifty-two days to get the work done.
  • 54:52 - 54:55
    Rest of the Mizo story.
  • 54:55 - 54:58
Maybe it's still happening, you see.
  • 54:58 - 55:00
(Puia) So, most of the leaders
  • 55:00 - 55:02
that I work with in this context,
  • 55:02 - 55:03
    they all loved the idea,
  • 55:03 - 55:06

    where we brought all
  • 55:07 - 55:08
    the young people together,
  • 55:08 - 55:10
but there came a few oppositions
  • 55:10 - 55:12
    from a few elders,
  • 55:12 - 55:14
citing that I was too young,
  • 55:14 - 55:17
    inexperienced, without the knowledge
  • 55:17 - 55:20
of working with different age groups,
  • 55:20 - 55:21
and that in the past they have tried,
  • 55:21 - 55:24
and it never worked because the problem
    was always...
  • 55:24 - 55:26
(Derek) Has anybody ever heard that line?
  • 55:26 - 55:28
"We tried it once," you know,
  • 55:28 - 55:30
"30 years ago, and it didn't work."
  • 55:30 - 55:31
We don't want to be negative,
  • 55:31 - 55:34
but these are some of the messages
    that could come.
  • 55:34 - 55:37
    (Puia) Right, but to make
    the long story short,
  • 55:37 - 55:38
I think the situation brought me
  • 55:38 - 55:40
to my knees so many times.
  • 55:40 - 55:42
    Sometimes I could never sleep...
  • 55:42 - 55:43
    (Derek) Is that good?
  • 55:43 - 55:45
    (Puia) Yeah, sometimes I wasn't
    able to sleep,
  • 55:45 - 55:47
like, I would stay up the whole night
  • 55:47 - 55:49

and with the burden on my heart,
  • 55:50 - 55:53
thinking that God really put this

  • 56:00 - 56:03
    they spread lies and rumors.
  • 56:03 - 56:06
I mean, it was bad, but in the end,
  • 56:06 - 56:09
with the results that the movement
  • 56:09 - 56:11
produced in the lives of our young people,

    people were able to see,
  • 56:13 - 56:15
    "Oh, maybe this actually
