The numbers of displaced people keep increasing every day. More than a million refugees crossed the Mediterranean looking for a safe and decent place to live. Hundreds keep dying on the shores of the old continent. Zia Weise shares the stories that she met in the refugee route from Greece across the Balkan states into central Europe.

Zia is a freelance journalist writing for The Sunday Times, The Telegraph, The Guardian, Global Post, POLITICO, Foreign Policy and The Independent. She also does radio reports for the BBC World Service, RTE Radio 1 and NPR. Since 2014 she has been living in Istanbul, Turkey, following up close the biggest refugee crisis ever and following the refugee trail from the Turkish coast to Greece, across the Balkans into central Europe.
