Disability Studies Quarterly editorial team introductions Oct. 4, 2020

  • 0:03 - 0:03
    Hi, I'm Elizabeth Brewer
  • 0:03 - 0:06
and I am one of the Co-Editors of
    Disability Studies Quarterly.
  • 0:06 - 0:14
My main responsibility with the journal,
although Brenda and I do everything,
  • 0:14 - 0:17
    is writing decision letters.
  • 0:17 - 0:21
So, I spend a lot of time doing that.
  • 0:21 - 0:23
I am also an Associate Professor
  • 0:23 - 0:27
of English at Central Connecticut State
    State University
  • 0:27 - 0:30
And I'm the Director of Composition
    there as well.
  • 0:30 - 0:35
I, um, I teach classes in Composition
    at all levels
  • 0:35 - 0:39
    and Disability Studies classes
    there as well.
  • 0:39 - 0:45
I have a Top Five list of things
    that I'm loving right now.
  • 0:45 - 0:47
So, these are in no particular order.
  • 0:47 - 0:50
Number 1 is North by Northwest
    by Alfred Hitchcock.
  • 0:50 - 0:53
    Love that film.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
Number 2 is basil pesto sauce.
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    3 is Ella Fitzgerald's music.
  • 0:59 - 1:02
    4 is cooking blogs.
  • 1:02 - 1:05
And 5 is color field paintings.
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    Great.
  • 1:07 - 1:10
    And I'm Brenda Brueggemann.
  • 1:10 - 1:12
I am the Co-Editor, with Elizabeth
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    at Disability Studies Quarterly.
  • 1:14 - 1:19
I was an Editor of DSQ from 2006 to 2012
  • 1:19 - 1:24
in the first iteration when we
brought it to Ohio State University
  • 1:24 - 1:25
    for publishing.
  • 1:25 - 1:28
I am a faculty member at the
    University of Connecticut.
  • 1:28 - 1:30
So, Elizabeth and I only live
  • 1:30 - 1:33
about 35 minutes from each other, right,
  • 1:33 - 1:34
depending on how traffic is going through
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    downtown Hartford.
  • 1:36 - 1:39
And, so, we live fairly close.
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    And before this period in
  • 1:41 - 1:43
    everybody's life and times,
  • 1:43 - 1:44
we used to be able to meet together,
  • 1:44 - 1:46
quite a lot, and do the work.
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    But we meet every week,
    editorial meetings.
  • 1:48 - 1:51
I am the primary handler of email.
  • 1:51 - 1:55
    Unlike most academics, I actually
    love email,
  • 1:55 - 1:56
    and love to write them.
  • 1:56 - 2:04
So, I communicate, and I also have
copyedited a lot of the issues.
  • 2:04 - 2:10
I am, my other field is, yes,
    Rhetoric Studies and Writing Studies.
  • 2:10 - 2:15
I am the Aetna Chair of Writing
    at UCONN,
  • 2:15 - 2:16
which means I get to spread out
    all the love
  • 2:16 - 2:19
I possibly can about how wonderful
    writing is.
  • 2:19 - 2:22
    My Top 5 favorite things,
  • 2:22 - 2:23
which is not just right now,
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    but pretty much always, forever:
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    Ohio State University Buckeye football,
  • 2:28 - 2:31
    Louisville and Kansas basketball,
  • 2:31 - 2:36
    all things water, but especially
    swimming and kayaking,
  • 2:36 - 2:37
    bourbon,
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    and potato chips.
  • 2:39 - 2:41
And, Kelsey, would you go next?
  • 2:41 - 2:45
    Hi, I'm Kelsey Henry,
  • 2:45 - 2:48
and I'm the new Assistant Editor
    with DSQ.
  • 2:48 - 2:51
    Very excited about that
  • 2:51 - 2:53
and still figuring out what all
    that entails,
  • 2:53 - 2:55
or could entail in the future.
  • 2:55 - 2:58
At the moment, I'll be working on
    copyediting
  • 2:58 - 3:02
for the upcoming 40.4 issue of DSQ.
  • 3:02 - 3:04
So excited to get started with that.
  • 3:04 - 3:06
Outside of my role at DSQ,
  • 3:06 - 3:11
    I'm a fourth-year PhD Candidate
    in American Studies at Yale.
  • 3:11 - 3:14
So, I just started working on
    my dissertation.
  • 3:14 - 3:17
    And, anything else about me?
  • 3:17 - 3:21
Generally, my work is at the nexus of
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    Critical Black Studies, Disability Studies,
  • 3:23 - 3:26
History of Science and Medicine, and
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    Science and Technology Studies.
  • 3:28 - 3:33
And my Top 5, right now,
    in no particular order, includes:
  • 3:33 - 3:35
    Brooklyn Blackout Cake,
  • 3:35 - 3:37
    Labradoodles,
  • 3:37 - 3:39
    True Crime podcasts,
  • 3:39 - 3:41
    (that's an always for me),
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    Tracy Chapman,
  • 3:43 - 3:45
    and platform clogs.
  • 3:45 - 3:52
And I'll pass it over to Ashley.
  • 3:52 - 3:54
    Hey, guys, I'm Ashley.
  • 3:54 - 3:56
I am an undergrad Editorial Intern
  • 3:56 - 3:59
    this semester at DSQ.
  • 3:59 - 4:00
    I've been working on
  • 4:00 - 4:03
    finding reviewers for
    the issues.
  • 4:03 - 4:05
And besides that, I am an
  • 4:05 - 4:07
    English major/senior at UCONN,
  • 4:07 - 4:10
with a minor in Women's Studies.
  • 4:10 - 4:12
And my Top 5 would be:
  • 4:12 - 4:14
    watching Hamilton with friends,
  • 4:14 - 4:15
    baking apple pie,
  • 4:15 - 4:17
    which I did last week,
  • 4:17 - 4:19
    cuddling with my cats,
    Otis and Finley,
  • 4:19 - 4:20
    drinking Yogi tea,
  • 4:20 - 4:22
    and mom jeans.
  • 4:22 - 4:26
    Alright, and Greta.
  • 4:26 - 4:28
    Hello, I'm Greta Schmitz.
  • 4:28 - 4:31
I'm currently a senior at UCONN,
  • 4:31 - 4:35
and I major in English and German
    Language and Culture.
  • 4:35 - 4:41
I am an intern, as is Ashley, at DSQ,
  • 4:41 - 4:43
and we've just been finding reviewers,
  • 4:43 - 4:48
and we're going to help copy edit the
    upcoming issue.
  • 4:48 - 4:50
I hope to do something in
    publishing
  • 4:50 - 4:52
    after I graduate from UCONN.
  • 4:52 - 4:54
So, learning how an academic journal
  • 4:54 - 4:57
    works has been very exciting.
  • 4:57 - 4:59
    My Top 5 are:
  • 4:59 - 5:02
the New York Rangers hockey team,
  • 5:02 - 5:04
    YA romance novels,
  • 5:04 - 5:06
    carrot cake,
  • 5:06 - 5:07
    running,
  • 5:07 - 5:10
    and German rap music.
  • 5:10 - 5:11
    Fabulous.
  • 5:11 - 5:12
    And then, we have a
  • 5:12 - 5:13
    Communication Access Team,
  • 5:13 - 5:16
I call them the "CAT", the "CATs".
  • 5:16 - 5:19
So, if they would introduce themselves?
  • 5:19 - 5:24
    MJ, you're up.
  • 5:24 - 5:26
    MJ.
  • 5:26 - 5:29
Hi, I'm Mary Jo Schwee Lochran,
  • 5:29 - 5:30
    or, MJ.
  • 5:30 - 5:33
I'm a staff interpreter here at UCONN.
  • 5:33 - 5:34
    Good to meet you all.
  • 5:34 - 5:38
    I'm Mary Gefert,
  • 5:38 - 5:41
    and I'm an affiliate interpreter
    with UCONN.
  • 5:41 - 5:44
    Great. Rob?
  • 5:44 - 5:45
    And I'm Robert Miller,
  • 5:45 - 5:46
    and I am a captioner,
  • 5:46 - 5:48
    also an affiliate with UCONN.
  • 5:48 - 5:51
    Fabulous.
  • 5:51 - 5:54
    Thank you, everyone.
