-
Not Synced
I'd like you to imagine the world anew.
-
Not Synced
I'd like to show you some maps
-
Not Synced
which have been drawn by Ben Hennig
-
Not Synced
of the planet in a way that most of you
will never have seen the planet
-
Not Synced
depicted before.
-
Not Synced
Here's an image that you're
very familiar with.
-
Not Synced
I'm old enough that I was actually born
before we saw this image.
-
Not Synced
Apparently some of my first words
words were "Moona, moona,"
-
Not Synced
but I think that's my mom
-
Not Synced
having a particular fantasy about
-
Not Synced
what her baby boy could see
on the flickering black and white
-
Not Synced
TV screen.
-
Not Synced
It's only been a few centuries
-
Not Synced
since we've actually, most of us,
thought of our planet as spherical.
-
Not Synced
When we first saw these images
in the 1960s,
-
Not Synced
the world was changing
at an incredible rate.
-
Not Synced
In my own little discipline
-
Not Synced
of human geography,
-
Not Synced
a cartographer called Waldo Tobler
-
Not Synced
was drawing new maps of the planet,
-
Not Synced
and these maps have now spread,
-
Not Synced
and I'm going to show you
one of them now.
-
Not Synced
This map is a map of the world,
-
Not Synced
but it's a map which looks to you
-
Not Synced
a little bit strange.
-
Not Synced
It's a map in which we stretched places
-
Not Synced
so that those areas which contain
many people are drawn larger,
-
Not Synced
and those areas, like the Sahara
and the Himalayas,
-
Not Synced
in which there are few people,
have been shrunk away.
-
Not Synced
Everybody on the planet is given
an equal amount of space.
-
Not Synced
The cities are shown shining bright.
-
Not Synced
The lines are showing you
submarine cables and trade routes.
-
Not Synced
And there's one particular line
that goes from the Chinese port of Dalian
-
Not Synced
through past Singapore,
-
Not Synced
through the Suez Canal,
-
Not Synced
through the Mediterranean,
and round to Rotterdam.
-
Not Synced
And it's showing you the route
-
Not Synced
of what was the world's largest ship
just a year ago,
-
Not Synced
a ship which was taking
-
Not Synced
so many containers of goods
-
Not Synced
that when they were unloaded,
-
Not Synced
if the lorries had all gone in convoy,
they would have been 100 kilometers long.
-
Not Synced
This is how our world is now connected.
-
Not Synced
This is the quantity of stuff
we are now moving around the world,
-
Not Synced
just on one ship, on one voyage,
-
Not Synced
in five weeks.
-
Not Synced
We've lived in cities
for a very long time,
-
Not Synced
but most of us didn't live in cities.
-
Not Synced
This is Çatalhöyük, one of
the world's first cities.
-
Not Synced
At its peak 9,000 years ago,
-
Not Synced
people had to walk over the roofs
-
Not Synced
of other's houses to get to their home.
-
Not Synced
If you look carefully
of the map of the city,
-
Not Synced
you'll see it has no streets,
-
Not Synced
because streets are something we invented.
-
Not Synced
The world changes.
-
Not Synced
It changes by trial and error.
-
Not Synced
We work out slowly and gradually
-
Not Synced
how to live in better ways.
-
Not Synced
And the world has changed
incredibly quickly most recently.
-
Not Synced
It's only within the last six,
seven, or eight generations
-
Not Synced
that we have actually realized
that we are a species.
-
Not Synced
It's only within the last few decades
-
Not Synced
that the map like this could be drawn.
-
Not Synced
Again, the underlying map
is the map of world population,
-
Not Synced
but over it, you're seeing arrows
showing how we spread out of Africa
-
Not Synced
with dates showing you where
we think we arrived
-
Not Synced
at particular times.
-
Not Synced
I have to redraw this map
every few months,
-
Not Synced
because somebody makes a discovery
-
Not Synced
that a particular date was wrong.
-
Not Synced
We are learning about ourselves
at an incredible speed.
-
Not Synced
And we're changing.
-
Not Synced
A lot of change is gradual.
-
Not Synced
It's accretion.
-
Not Synced
We don't notice the change
-
Not Synced
because we only have short lives,
-
Not Synced
70, 80, if you're lucky 90 years.
-
Not Synced
This graph is showing you
-
Not Synced
the annual rate of population
growth in the world.
-
Not Synced
It was very low until around about 1850,
-
Not Synced
and then the rate of population growth
-
Not Synced
began to rise
-
Not Synced
so that around the time I was born,
-
Not Synced
when we first saw
those images from the Moon
-
Not Synced
of our planet,
-
Not Synced
our global population was growing
at two percent a year.
-
Not Synced
If it had carried on growing
at two percent a year
-
Not Synced
for just another couple of centuries,
-
Not Synced
the entire planet would be covered
-
Not Synced
with a seething mass of human bodies
-
Not Synced
all touching each other.
-
Not Synced
And people were scared.
-
Not Synced
They were scared at population growth,
-
Not Synced
and what they called
"the population bomb" in 1968.
-
Not Synced
But then, if you look
at the end of the graph,
-
Not Synced
the growth began to slow.
-
Not Synced
The decade the '70s, the '80s, the '90s,
the naughties, and in this decade,
-
Not Synced
even faster,
-
Not Synced
our population growth is slowing.
-
Not Synced
Our planet is stabilizing.
-
Not Synced
We are heading towards nine, 10,
or 11 billion people
-
Not Synced
by the end of the century.
-
Not Synced
Within that change, you can see tumult.
-
Not Synced
you can see the Second World War.
-
Not Synced
You can see the pandemic
in 1918 from influenza.
-
Not Synced
You can see the great Chinese famine.
-
Not Synced
These are the events
we tend to concentrate on.
-
Not Synced
We tend to concentrate
on the terrible events in the news.
-
Not Synced
We don't tend to concentrate on
the gradual change
-
Not Synced
and the good news stories.
-
Not Synced
We worry about people.
-
Not Synced
We worry about how many people there are.
-
Not Synced
We worry about how you can
get away from people.
-
Not Synced
But this is the map of the world
changed again to make area large,
-
Not Synced
the further away people are
from each area.
-
Not Synced
So if you want to know where to go
to get away from everybody,
-
Not Synced
here's the best places to go.
-
Not Synced
And every year, these areas get bigger,
-
Not Synced
because every year, we are
coming off the land globally.
-
Not Synced
We are moving into the cities.
-
Not Synced
We are packing in more densely.
-
Not Synced
There are wolves again in Europe,
-
Not Synced
and the wolves are moving west
-
Not Synced
across the continent.
-
Not Synced
Our world is changing.
-
Not Synced
You have worries.
-
Not Synced
This is a map showing where
the water falls on our planet.
-
Not Synced
We now know that.
-
Not Synced
And you can look at where Çatalhöyük was,
-
Not Synced
where three continents meet,
Africa, Asia, and Europe,
-
Not Synced
and you can see there are
a large number of people living there
-
Not Synced
in areas with very little water.
-
Not Synced
And you can see areas in which
there is a great deal of rainfall as well.
-
Not Synced
And we can get a bit more sophisticated.
-
Not Synced
Instead of making
the map be shaped by people,
-
Not Synced
we can shape the map by water,
-
Not Synced
and then we can change it every month
-
Not Synced
to show the amount of water
-
Not Synced
falling on every small part of the globe.
-
Not Synced
And you see the monsoons moving
around the planet,
-
Not Synced
and the planet almost appears
to have a heartbeat.
-
Not Synced
And all of this only became possible
-
Not Synced
within my life,
-
Not Synced
to see this is where we are living.
-
Not Synced
We have enough water.
-
Not Synced
This is a map of where we grow
our food in the world.
-
Not Synced
This is the areas that we will rely on
most for rice and maize and corn.
-
Not Synced
People worry that there won't
be enough food, but we know,
-
Not Synced
if we just ate less meat and fed
less of the crops to animals,
-
Not Synced
there is enough food for everybody
-
Not Synced
as long as we think of ourselves
as one group of people.
-
Not Synced
And we also know
-
Not Synced
about what we do
-
Not Synced
so terribly badly nowadays.
-
Not Synced
You will have seen this map
-
Not Synced
of the world before.
-
Not Synced
This is the map
-
Not Synced
produced by taking satellite images,
-
Not Synced
if you remember those satellites
around the planet
-
Not Synced
in the very first slide I showed,
-
Not Synced
and producing an image of what
the Earth looks like at night.
-
Not Synced
When you normally see that map,
-
Not Synced
on a normal map, the kind of map
-
Not Synced
that most of you will be used to,
-
Not Synced
you think you are seeing
-
Not Synced
a map of where people live.
-
Not Synced
Where the lights are shining up
is where people live.
-
Not Synced
But here, on this image of the world,
-
Not Synced
remember we've stretched the map again.
-
Not Synced
Everywhere has the same density
of people on this map.
-
Not Synced
If an area doesn't have people,
-
Not Synced
we've shrunk it away
-
Not Synced
to make it disappear.
-
Not Synced
So we're showing everybody
-
Not Synced
with equal prominence.
-
Not Synced
Now, the lights no longer show you
where people are,
-
Not Synced
because people are everywhere.
-
Not Synced
Now the lights on the map,
-
Not Synced
the lights in London, the lights in Cairo,
the lights in Tokyo,
-
Not Synced
the lights on the Eastern Seaboard
of the United States,
-
Not Synced
the lights show you where people live
-
Not Synced
who are so profligate with energy
-
Not Synced
that they can afford
-
Not Synced
to spend money
-
Not Synced
powering lights to shine
up into the sky
-
Not Synced
so satellites can draw an image like this.
-
Not Synced
And the areas that are dark on the map
-
Not Synced
are either areas where people
do not have access to that much energy,
-
Not Synced
or areas where people do,
-
Not Synced
but they have learned to stop
shining the light up into the sky.
-
Not Synced
And if I could show you this map
animated over time,
-
Not Synced
you would see that Tokyo
has actually become darker,
-
Not Synced
because ever since the tsunami in Japan,
-
Not Synced
Japan has had to rely
on a quarter less electricity
-
Not Synced
because it turned
the nuclear power stations off.
-
Not Synced
And the world didn't end.
-
Not Synced
You just shown less light
-
Not Synced
up into the sky.
-
Not Synced
There are a huge number
-
Not Synced
of good news stories in the world.
-
Not Synced
Infant mortality is falling
-
Not Synced
and has been falling
at an incredible rate.
-
Not Synced
A few years ago,
-
Not Synced
the number of babies
dying in their first year
-
Not Synced
of life in the world
-
Not Synced
fell by five percent in just one year.
