Minor Pentatonic Picking Exercise (Guitar Lesson BC-185) Guitar for beginners Stage 8

  • 0:06 - 0:08
Hi, how ya doin' Justin here,
  • 0:08 - 0:12
what we're gonna be checking out in
this lesson is a Minor Pentatonic picking exercise,
  • 0:12 - 0:17
and I'm gonna be introducing you
to the idea of alternate picking.
  • 0:17 - 0:20
    Now hopefully you've been practicing
    up your Minor Pentatonic Scale.
  • 0:20 - 0:21
The one that sounds like this...
  • 0:21 - 0:28
    . . .
  • 0:28 - 0:31
Hopefully you've been doing loads and
    loads of practice on it,
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    so you can start to
    now think about the picking
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    instead of having to think
    about your fretting hand.
  • 0:35 - 0:38
So, what are we gonna do with this?
  • 0:38 - 0:43
Well, you probably, hopefully have just been using downpicks to play the scale so far.
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    If you've been using some
    sort of other picking,
  • 0:45 - 0:47
that might be good or it might be
bad, depending on how you're doing it.
  • 0:47 - 0:49
So what I'm going to do
    is give you an exercise,
  • 0:49 - 0:53
to help you work on your
picking and develop this alternate style.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
So what we're gonna do first of all,
  • 0:55 - 0:58
    we're gonna pick the Minor
    Pentatonic Scale using all downpicks.
  • 0:58 - 1:01
So it's, start there, the usual
place starting at the 5th fret,
  • 1:01 - 1:16
    . . .
  • 1:16 - 1:21
And once you've done all downpicks,
you would then do all up-picks.
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    So up-picking every time.
  • 1:23 - 1:35
    . . .
  • 1:35 - 1:39
Now I should mention at this point as
well for some of you speed freaks,
  • 1:39 - 1:43
it's not about doing it quickly,
    it's about doing it accurately.
  • 1:43 - 1:46
So make sure you're not practicing a mistake.
  • 1:46 - 1:50
If it's, you should be practicing at whatever
speed you can perform this at perfectly.
  • 1:50 - 1:58
So if that means doing it
this speed then so be it.
  • 1:58 - 2:04
    Don't go, no point, no
    use to anyone whatsoever,
  • 2:04 - 2:07
especially you, do it slowly, get it right.
  • 2:07 - 2:09
    Very important. OK.
  • 2:09 - 2:12
    So you've done all downs,
    you've done all ups.
  • 2:12 - 2:15
Now you're gonna do down and
an up pick on each note.
  • 2:15 - 2:19
So you're gonna go, starting with
the 1st note of the scale,
  • 2:19 - 2:26
on the thickest string, you go,
    down up, down up, etc.
  • 2:26 - 2:50
    . . .
  • 2:50 - 2:54
For this one again, don't be in a
hurry, but if you want to practice it,
  • 2:54 - 2:56
if you can do it accurately,
  • 2:56 - 2:58
then by all means stick it to a metronome,
  • 2:58 - 2:59
    and start going,
  • 2:59 - 3:08
    . . .
  • 3:08 - 3:10
Start building up the speed of it.
  • 3:10 - 3:12
    But really make sure that
    you're doing it accurately first,
  • 3:12 - 3:15
    before you even think about
    starting to make it faster.
  • 3:15 - 3:19
So, incidentally, a good starting speed
    for all of these exercises,
  • 3:19 - 3:22
is doing stuff at 60, which
is going to seem incredibly slow,
  • 3:22 - 3:26
    but sometimes doing things
    slowly is quite difficult.
  • 3:26 - 3:32
So just here at 60 that's the kind of
tempo you want to be starting off with.
  • 3:32 - 3:37
Really simple. That's all down strokes
    and then again your upstrokes.
  • 3:37 - 3:41
    . . .
  • 3:41 - 3:43
Then your down and ups you
might double it, so you'd have,
  • 3:43 - 3:50
    . . .
  • 3:50 - 3:54
etc, it's important that you start slowly
when you do it with a metronome.
  • 3:54 - 3:56
    Remember the metronome induces
    a bit of panic,
  • 3:56 - 3:58
    'cause it means you've gotta
    keep going, you can't pause.
  • 3:58 - 4:00
    Which is really good, I
    mean, we don't wanna stop.
  • 4:00 - 4:04
We want to practice, continuing and
    making things work properly.
  • 4:04 - 4:07
So, your first part of the exercise
is what we just talked about.
  • 4:07 - 4:10
All down, all up, then down
    and up on each note.
  • 4:10 - 4:14
But then I want you to have a
go at doing, if you like, proper picking.
  • 4:14 - 4:17
    Right, and proper picking
    is alternate picking.
  • 4:17 - 4:20
Which means you go down followed by
an up on the next note.
  • 4:20 - 4:23
Followed by a down, up on the
next, down, up on the next.
  • 4:23 - 4:26
    There are other types of
picking, principally one called economy picking
  • 4:26 - 4:29
    which is used by kinda
    heavy metal and rock guys.
  • 4:29 - 4:32
All of the metal and rock guys
I know that use economy picking,
  • 4:32 - 4:34
learnt how to alternate pick first.
  • 4:34 - 4:38
And they have all emphasized to me,
oh, if you're trying to learn
  • 4:38 - 4:39
    that technique make sure
    that your students
  • 4:39 - 4:41
    always get their alternate
    picking happening first
  • 4:41 - 4:43
    before they're trying to
    do economy picking.
  • 4:43 - 4:47
    So, if you've got a
    friend that does economy picking,
  • 4:47 - 4:49
or you've read about it or whatever
try and avoid it for now.
  • 4:49 - 4:51
Get your alternate picking right first,
  • 4:51 - 4:53
    and then maybe have a
    look at economy picking later.
  • 4:53 - 4:56
    So, alternate picking with
    the Minor Pentatonic Scale,
  • 4:56 - 5:00
we're always gonna be picking a down pick
with the note with our 1st finger.
  • 5:00 - 5:08
So we're gonna be going, down, up,
down, up, down, up, down, up, etc.
  • 5:08 - 5:16
    . . .
  • 5:19 - 5:23
    ...down, up, down, up, down.
  • 5:23 - 5:27
As you get better at this, this is
what you want to stick to your metronome.
  • 5:27 - 5:31
So, just if we do it
nicely at 60bpm, nice and slow,
  • 5:31 - 5:36
    we'll be doing down,up etc
  • 5:36 - 5:55
    . . .
  • 5:55 - 5:59
    And it's this alternate picking
    that's a really, really, really
  • 5:59 - 6:01
    cool thing to get down.
  • 6:01 - 6:03
    'Cause most of the time
    when we're playing scales,
  • 6:03 - 6:05
    especially as we get more
    advanced and we get faster,
  • 6:05 - 6:07
    you need to be alternate
    picking all the time.
  • 6:07 - 6:10
    So this is a great
    little exercise, all down picks,
  • 6:10 - 6:13
all up picks, down and up on
each note, and then alternate picking,
  • 6:13 - 6:17
for your Minor Pentatonic Scale, that will
definitely help sort out your picking hand.
  • 6:17 - 6:20
    Don't forget to anchor, with
    your little finger as well.
  • 6:20 - 6:21
You'll probably find that helps a lot.
  • 6:21 - 6:24
You don't have to, but I
think it's definitely worth starting with that.
  • 6:24 - 6:27
So you can kind of decide if
that technique works for you or not.
  • 6:27 - 6:32
OK. Hope you've enjoyed that, and I'll see you for some more chord work in a minute.
