Basic Blues Improvisation (Guitar Lesson BC-196) Guitar for beginners Stage 9
-
0:07 - 0:11How, you doin? Justin here, and we're up for
a pretty cool little lesson now. -
0:11 - 0:14And that's: we're checking out blues improvising.
-
0:14 - 0:16So, the twelve bar blues that we've learned previously,
-
0:16 - 0:20the rhythm guitar part, works really well
with the minor pentatonic scale. -
0:20 - 0:24And although there's a lot of things for you to learn,
like string bending and licks and stuff, -
0:24 - 0:27it can be quite good fun to just get in there
and just start playing this stuff. -
0:27 - 0:30And experimenting a little bit with how that scale sounds.
-
0:30 - 0:34So, what I'm going to do for you now, is just a little bit of fun,
-
0:34 - 0:38is I'm going to give you a little demonstration of some ideas that you might want to use.
-
0:38 - 0:40Now, it's kind of hard for me, to be completely honest,
-
0:40 - 0:43to play just in position one and not to use other notes
-
0:43 - 0:45and not to use string bends and stuff like that.
-
0:45 - 0:49Just because I kind of do it all the time and it's hard
to really restrict yourself. -
0:49 - 0:50But I'm going to have a go.
-
0:50 - 0:54So, the things I want you to watch out for is:
you don't have to play all the time. -
0:54 - 0:55You can play a little phrase,
-
0:55 - 1:00"bi-doo, doo, stop. bi-doo, doo, stop."
-
1:00 - 1:03So the idea of having a little motive is a good thing.
-
1:03 - 1:05Don't feel like you have to just play all the time.
-
1:05 - 1:08See if you can play something that sounds a little bit musical, with a little bit of repetition,
-
1:08 - 1:12is also a good idea. To have a little idea that repeats itself.
-
1:12 - 1:15You could have a go at using some of those
pattern studies and stuff if you wanted to, -
1:15 - 1:17that might be an interesting thing too.
-
1:17 - 1:19The idea really is to just experiment.
-
1:19 - 1:23Now hopefully, some of you guys have got
somebody to jam with. -
1:23 - 1:29If not, there's a twelve bar blues backing track available
on the website. -
1:29 - 1:31And also, for those DVD users,
-
1:31 - 1:35there'll be a DVD extra of a
"Twelve Bar Blues Jam With Justin", -
1:35 - 1:38where I'm going to do some rhythm guitar
for you to have a jam along with. -
1:38 - 1:40But right now I've got my jam buddy:
-
1:40 - 1:44Jedi, do you fancy coming and playing some
twelve bar blues for me, cobba? -
1:44 - 1:48- Oh man, that'd be great! Yeah, thought you'd never ask.
-
1:52 - 1:53Oh dear.
-
1:53 - 1:55- Shall I just say yes?
-
1:55 - 1:57Erm, it just sounded funny!
-
2:00 - 2:02Hey, how you doin? So, welcome the Jedi.
-
2:02 - 2:03- Hey!
-
2:03 - 2:05So, we've got Jedi from the other side of the camera,
-
2:05 - 2:08we just dragged him 'round here to play a little bit of
twelve bar blues with me. -
2:08 - 2:11So he's going to do a little bit of
the twelve bar blues rhythm guitar -
2:11 - 2:14and I'm just going to give you a bit of
a demonstration of a really, -
2:14 - 2:18really nice, easy little solo to play,
using the minor pentatonic. -
2:18 - 2:22So, I'm going to, I might end up doing
some things that I haven't showed you yet. -
2:22 - 2:26But I'm going to try really not to do any bending
and stuff like that. But... -
2:26 - 2:29So, just have a bit of a look, but the idea will be
just for you to jam -
2:29 - 2:31and you to have a bit of fun on your own,
-
2:31 - 2:35experimenting with that scale. If you want
to get more into the lead guitar stuff, -
2:35 - 2:37check out the Blues Lead guitar course on the site.
-
2:37 - 2:39Because that explains all these things, like:
-
2:39 - 2:42how to use the scale properly and how to learn licks.
But it's just, -
2:42 - 2:44could be quite fun just to jam around with this now.
-
2:44 - 2:48So, I'll play a little intro and then we'll head off, Jed.
Is that alright? -
2:48 - 2:51Yeah, yeah, let's go.
-
2:51 - 3:50. . .
-
3:50 - 3:52Have lots of space
-
3:52 - 4:18. . .
-
4:18 - 4:21Thank you very much, Jedi. - Thank you, Justin.
-
4:21 - 4:23And thank you very much for all the filming
and hard work there, cobba. -
4:23 - 4:27This is the Jedi, out on the right side of the camera. Hey!
-
4:30 - 4:33So, I hope you enjoyed that little jam I just had with Jed.
-
4:33 - 4:36I didn't manage to stick to the minor pentatonic notes
all the time, -
4:36 - 4:39but I did for the most part.
I probably played a little bit too much, -
4:39 - 4:41especially seeing as I've tried to
illustrate to you the idea -
4:41 - 4:43that you can just play a few notes.
-
4:43 - 4:47So, maybe I'm just as guilty as you guys usually are.
So anyway, the idea here is just -
4:47 - 4:50to have a little bit of fun. Try jamming along
with that minor pentatonic scale. -
4:50 - 4:53If you get really into it, go and check out
the Blues Lead Guitar course. -
4:53 - 4:55Because it really is, that's a lot of fun.
-
4:55 - 4:57And it'll teach you all of the skills that you need
-
4:57 - 5:02to do good blues improvising. I hope.
So, have a crack on that, -
5:02 - 5:04have a bit of a laugh.
And I've, we've got one last little thing to do, -
5:04 - 5:08which is to consolidate all the stuff
we've done in this course. -
5:08 - 5:10Which, let's face it, is quite a lot of stuff.
-
5:10 - 5:15So, I'll see you for that Consolidation Lesson
in just a moment.
