Veganism Is Metal As F@#$! | Vegan Black Metal Chef

  • 0:00 - 0:05
You may think being vegan is the right thing
to do, that it’s compassionate and responsible,
  • 0:05 - 0:09
good for the environment, the planet, your
own health and, of course the animals. But
  • 0:09 - 0:13
did you also know that veganism is metal as
    f&*%?
  • 0:17 - 0:21
Hi it’s Emily from Bite Size Vegan and welcome
to another vegan nugget. As some of you know,
  • 0:21 - 0:25
I was recently in Orlando Florida and had
the pleasure of meeting up with two awesome
  • 0:25 - 0:31
vegan YouTubers, Tino from the channels Bananiac
and Symposium Films and Brian the Vegan Black
  • 0:31 - 0:32
    Metal Chef.
  • 0:32 - 0:36
Two weeks ago I brought you my interview with
Tino and his corresponding interview with
  • 0:36 - 0:37
    me on his channel.
  • 0:37 - 0:41
And today, I’m excited to share with you
my interview with the dark lord of YouTube
  • 0:41 - 0:47
himself, the Vegan Black Metal Chef. You may
be familiar with him in his more “metaly”
  • 0:47 - 0:52
incarnation but today we get to take a look
behind the faux leather and vegan makeup to hear
  • 0:52 - 0:54
from the man behind the Metal Chef.
  • 0:54 - 1:01
Right, so I am here today with Brian,
the Vegan Black Metal Chef who you might know
  • 1:01 - 1:06
from You Tube fame on his channel. We’re
just going to talk a little bit about his
  • 1:06 - 1:09
story. So, thank you so much for coming here.
  • 1:09 - 1:10
    Thanks for having me.
  • 1:10 - 1:15
Yeah, so I would like, can you just
talk a little bit like what made you go vegan
  • 1:15 - 1:17
and what the process was like for you starting
    out.
  • 1:17 - 1:23
Wow. Sure. I think I have the most
typical ‘why I went vegan story’ in all
  • 1:23 - 1:32
of existence. In high school, late high school
I had a girlfriend at the time that went vegetarian
  • 1:32 - 1:38
and at that time I said, ‘ you know what?
I see that as the right way to go but I’m
  • 1:38 - 1:44
not ready for that yet’ so I didn’t go
vegetarian or vegan or anything. Then, in
  • 1:44 - 1:50
my first year of college, I looked back a
year later and I said ‘well, she didn’t
  • 1:50 - 1:58
die and so well if she didn’t die and I
realized that it’s the right way to go then
  • 1:58 - 2:03
really, what am I so afraid of?’ And I really
recognized that as a fear within myself and
  • 2:03 - 2:09
I couldn’t live with this low level fear.
It wasn’t a fear for my life, it wasn’t
  • 2:09 - 2:15
a fear for anything, it was a fear of not
eating meat and a fear of the social conditioning
  • 2:15 - 2:23
around it so I just kind of faced that fear
and I went vegetarian for about 2 or 3 months
  • 2:23 - 2:28
and I attended an animal rights group at the
University of Florida where I was going at
  • 2:28 - 2:33
the time called “Animal Activists of Alachua”
and saw a few videos and went vegan.
  • 2:33 - 2:37
So, can you talk a little
bit about the development of your channel,
  • 2:37 - 2:41
like how did you come to this idea of ‘Alright,
I’m going to make a cooking show that is
  • 2:41 - 2:45
like a black metal show at the same time.
  • 2:45 - 2:50
Brian: Yeah, absolutely, the time was three
plus years ago, a little more than three years
  • 2:50 - 2:57
ago when the channel first started and I said
‘well, I’ve been vegan for about 14 or
  • 2:57 - 3:02
so years and at that time, I’d been vegan
about eleven or so years, well, I’ve been
  • 3:02 - 3:07
vegan for a decent amount of time I think
my meals taste awesome, they’re not very
  • 3:07 - 3:12
difficult to make and they’re really cheap
and so it’s everything that people think
  • 3:12 - 3:18
veganism isn’t so I said the world needs to
know about this in some way. I thought about
  • 3:18 - 3:23
doing a regular cooking show but they kind
of put me to sleep so I just really combined
  • 3:23 - 3:30
my passions of music and black metal music
in particular with the vegan cooking and made
  • 3:31 - 3:34
the cooking show I wanted to see and luckily
a few other people wanted to see it too.
  • 3:34 - 3:39
So I think it’s an interesting
marriage between vegan cooking and black metal.
  • 3:39 - 3:44
What would you say, it’s kind of a weird
question, what would you say, if veganism
  • 3:44 - 3:49
is metal, and if so, like, I don’t know,
do you feel like they converged really well together?
  • 3:49 - 3:55
Well, I think veganism is as metal
as fuck, but do they really ultimately have
  • 3:55 - 4:02
anything to do with each other? I guess you
can have some sparse connection, ultimately,
  • 4:02 - 4:11
    I don't think they necessarily have… especially
the black metal music doesn't necessarily
  • 4:11 - 4:16
have anything to do directly with veganism.
It’s just the music that I like and the
  • 4:16 - 4:21
show I wanted to see. But veganism is as metal
as fuck. That’s good. I‘m glad we got
  • 4:21 - 4:29
that, as noted by many other metal musicians
out there already who are vegan. Really? Can
  • 4:29 - 4:38
you like name some of them? Well actually,
just in Revolver magazine recently, Alissa
  • 4:38 - 4:45
White-Gluz it either Alisha or Alicia, I always
get it wrong, and her boyfriend Doyle from
  • 4:45 - 4:52
The Misfits did a whole section about health
and metal eating and she says that Doyle eats
  • 4:52 - 4:59
mostly vegan when I chatted with her and it’s
really cool to see the both of them, they
  • 4:59 - 5:06
both workout like crazy and Doyle’s like
the biggest dude in existence. Angela Gossow,
  • 5:06 - 5:13
the previous singer of Arch Enemy is also
vegan. There’s a number of others here and
  • 5:13 - 5:18
there from the guys from Creator, the bassist
of Black Sabbath and a few others.
  • 5:18 - 5:24
If someone came to you and they were
just trying to start out on their vegan path,
  • 5:24 - 5:29
what kind of guidance would you give someone
about how to become vegan and to stay that
  • 5:29 - 5:29
    way.
  • 5:29 - 5:33
    Absolutely, well actually, I wrote
    an entire article about this on my website;
  • 5:33 - 5:40
veganblackmetalchef.com - How to be vegan.
It’s just along the little top bar there
  • 5:40 - 5:48
on the website. First off, just start bringing
consciousness to your actions if you're not
  • 5:48 - 5:56
    vegan currently, you're eating a non-vegan
meal. Think about where the meal came from.
  • 5:56 - 6:03
A lot of people go endlessly with ever thinking
about these things. And if you want to become
  • 6:03 - 6:10
vegan, there can’t be a struggle with being
vegan. There’s no struggle in my life with
  • 6:10 - 6:13
    oh - it’s a restrictive life. It’s not
    a restrictive diet, I haven’t even tried
  • 6:13 - 6:20
all the vegan choices yet. There are so many
incredible things to eat. There’s no struggle,
  • 6:21 - 6:27
there’s no cutting out. There’s really
an exploration of what plant-based choices
  • 6:27 - 6:37
you can find and can make. And so really,
just making consciousness to the meal and
  • 6:37 - 6:45
consciousness to your actions will make you
think okay where did this come from or how
  • 6:45 - 6:54
is everything affected by me eating this meal
or really the main key on how to stay vegan
  • 6:54 - 7:03
and how to stay vegan is it has to hurt more
to eat the meal than it would to not.
  • 7:03 - 7:06
Well I want to thank, Brian you so
much for your time. Do you want to tell people
  • 7:06 - 7:08
    how to find you?
  • 7:08 - 7:12
