Introduction to Engineers.SG - Hackware

Hi, my name is Michael.

So, what is Engineers.SG?

Engineers.SG is a not-for-profit community
initiatve that I created two years back

to help document the Singapore tech and
startup scene

So basically, you can find all the videos
on Engineers.SG.

If you've been to any of the meetups,
you've seen me lugging around

a suitcase of some sorts.

Why did I create Engineers.SG?

Many years ago, somebody irritated me
by asking me: "Where are the engineers?"

So i was like... I felt that was a
marketing problem?

[Laughter]

We were not promoting ourselves
well enough?

[...]

When I was a teenager, I was into
videography

I wanted to start my own little podcast
with some of the bloggers in our midst.

I thought it would be a good thing
to have to record the different meetups

so that people who have never been to
any of the meetups can and watch it

and get a sense of how the community
is like, and for new people

who are joining the tech industry, they
can watch these videos and get a sense

of the community, the people that we have
in the community, and the kind of things

we talk about, the things that we geek
out about. Like today, we're geeking out

about Bluetooth and ESP Chips.
Pretty cool.

These are some of the meetups that we have
recorded - this is not an exhaustive list.

Some numbers - we have about 600 videos
on our website now.

We started doing this in 2013. Our website
gets around 14k page views per month.

I've recorded 12 conferences so far. Upcoming things:
pyconSG, RedDotRubyConf, AgileConf,

WordCampSG, and PHPConf this year
will probably be recorded by me as well.

So it will be pretty cool.

So why am I here talking to you today?
