إعرف دستورهم | التعذيب
-
0:01 - 0:03A regime that practices torture,
-
0:03 - 0:06we can't tolerate this no matter who's at the head of it
-
0:06 - 0:09"And I say this in clear language,"
-
0:09 - 0:13"that the dignity of the Egyptian is the dignity of Egypt"
-
0:25 - 0:31Not only the army, but from the police and the armed forces
-
0:47 - 0:50"Morsi handing the Nile Medal to Tantawi"
-
0:51 - 0:52Who's paying you?
-
0:52 - 0:54Will you confess or will they kill you out there?

1:03 - 1:05[Dr. Aida Seif el Dowla; El Nadeem Center for Rehabilitation of Victims of Violence]
-
1:05 - 1:09The new constitution says that people can be detained without know the charges against them,
-
1:09 - 1:11for 12 hours
-
1:11 - 1:13Let's imagine this scenario:
-
1:13 - 1:18Someone gets held for 11 and a half hours without anyone telling him why,
-
1:18 - 1:22He's then set free after 11 and a half hours,
without any breach of law -
1:22 - 1:26At which point he is arrested again, and the whole
process starts over -
1:26 - 1:27a whole new 12 hour window
-
1:29 - 1:30The constitution does not discusses torture,
-
1:30 - 1:32nor define it,
-
1:32 - 1:36neither does it mention it's obligation to the
UN Convention against Torture -
1:36 - 1:40despite the fact that the article could
have been included in the constitution -
1:40 - 1:41in a clear fashion, saying:
-
1:41 - 1:44"Torture is a crime with no statute of limitations,"
-
1:44 - 1:51"and it is the right of victims to direct judicial redress."
-
1:52 - 1:53This is an illegitimate constitution
-
1:53 - 1:59I don't even have to read the rest of it to make up my mind.
-
1:59 - 2:03Insofar as we're not voting on individual amendments,
-
2:03 - 2:05but rather the constitution in its entirety,
-
2:05 - 2:09then these articles are enough on their own
for me to reject this constitution
- Title:
- إعرف دستورهم | التعذيب
- Description:
-
Torture in Egypt is systematic, whether at the hands of police, the army, or lately civilians supporting Morsi. The new constitution neither provides guarantees that torture will be treated as criminal activity nor that torture will be ended. Moreover, the document codifies the right of security to detain citizens for 12 hours without any reason given: without habeas corpus.
