The Pebble Meditation

  • 0:01 - 0:04
    For pebble meditation
we try to find a quiet place,
  • 0:05 - 0:08
a calm place where be can be at ease.
  • 0:08 - 0:10
It could be in a forest like this
  • 0:11 - 0:13
or a quiet room in our house.
  • 0:14 - 0:17
    We may like to sit
with a few other young people
  • 0:18 - 0:21
or maybe one adult, two adults,
  • 0:21 - 0:25
    who can help to share
    the practice with us.
  • 0:26 - 0:31
    We like to have
a little pouch for our pebbles.
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    This is one
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    that I have from India.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
Inside the pouch we have four pebbles.
  • 0:44 - 0:48
    We take the pebbles
    and we put them down
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    on our left side.
  • 0:52 - 0:55
Then we can just come back to our breath
  • 0:55 - 0:58
    and enjoy deeply being present.
  • 1:05 - 1:08
    With our left hand
we can pick the first pebble.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
    This pebble represents a flower.
  • 1:14 - 1:17
We can put it on our right hand
  • 1:21 - 1:25
    and we practice
    breathing in and out.
  • 1:26 - 1:29
    You may like to say:
    Breathing in
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    I am a flower.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
    Breathing out,
    I feel fresh.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    Breathing in
  • 1:40 - 1:44
    we are like a flower
    in the garden of humanity.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
    When we are truly present,
    we are fresh.
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    We feel joyful inside.
  • 1:52 - 1:55
    There is no anger, irritation.
  • 1:55 - 1:56
    We can just
  • 1:57 - 2:00
    close our right hand
    on the flower-pebble
  • 2:00 - 2:04
and let the energy of freshness come in.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    We close our eyes.
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    Breathing in,
  • 2:11 - 2:13
I feel fresh as a flower.
  • 2:26 - 2:28
    In,
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    I am a flower.
  • 2:32 - 2:33
    Out,
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    fresh.
  • 2:46 - 2:49
Then we can put the flower-pebble
    on our right.
  • 2:57 - 3:01
Already I feel lighter and happier.
  • 3:03 - 3:07
Then I look and I see
    the second pebble
  • 3:10 - 3:12
in the shape like a mountain.
  • 3:13 - 3:16
    This is the mountain-pebble.
  • 3:19 - 3:23
Like the flower, we can touch
    this solidity inside of ourselves.
  • 3:24 - 3:26
That is a quality of a mountain.
  • 3:29 - 3:32
We have the pebble on our right hand.
  • 3:32 - 3:34
    We can hold it there.
  • 3:35 - 3:38
We can close our eyes and say:
    Breathing in,
  • 3:39 - 3:41
    I am a mountain.
  • 3:44 - 3:45
    Breathing out,
  • 3:46 - 3:48
I feel solid as a mountain.
  • 3:50 - 3:53
    In, mountain.
  • 3:54 - 3:57
    Out, solid.
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    We touch the mountain inside.
  • 4:12 - 4:16
We feel like nothing can knock us over.
  • 4:16 - 4:20
    We feel very stable.
  • 4:21 - 4:22
    Whatever emotions come
  • 4:23 - 4:26
    they don't knock us over,
    but we only sway
  • 4:27 - 4:30
and we come back to our root
    as a solid mountain.
  • 4:30 - 4:35
Like the earth deep down the rocks,
  • 4:35 - 4:37
    keeping the mountain
  • 4:37 - 4:40
even in the midst of the storm
    very stable.
  • 4:44 - 4:47
We put the second pebble down,
    the mountain-pebble.
  • 4:51 - 4:55
    We can touch again
    the freshness of a flower
  • 4:55 - 4:58
and now the solidity of a mountain.
  • 5:05 - 5:08
    Then we reach down
    and take the third pebble
  • 5:09 - 5:12
    which is water.
  • 5:15 - 5:17
    When the water is still,
  • 5:17 - 5:20
it reflects things just as they are.
  • 5:21 - 5:23
It is like when we see
  • 5:24 - 5:26
    a very still mountain lake.
  • 5:27 - 5:31
We can look deep down into the water
  • 5:31 - 5:34
and see all the fish and stones
    that are down there.
  • 5:34 - 5:38
We can also see the reflection
of the mountains and the sky above.
  • 5:39 - 5:41
So when our mind is calm,
  • 5:41 - 5:45
we can be like the mountain water.
  • 5:50 - 5:52
I put the pebble on my right hand
  • 5:53 - 5:56
    and I say:
    Breathing in, I am water.
  • 5:58 - 6:02
    Breathing out,
I reflect things as they are.
  • 6:05 - 6:07
    In, mountain (water).
  • 6:10 - 6:12
    Out, reflecting.
  • 6:24 - 6:27
    When our mind is calm
    we can see our sadness,
  • 6:27 - 6:29
    our joy, our happiness,
  • 6:30 - 6:33
just as we can see deeply
    into the clear water.
  • 6:39 - 6:42
    I put the water-pebble
    down on my right.
  • 6:49 - 6:53
    Again I feel the flowerness
    that makes me feel fresh,
  • 6:54 - 6:57
    the mountain, I feel solid.
  • 6:59 - 7:01
    And the water
  • 7:02 - 7:05
    which is my calm mind
    reflecting things as they are.
  • 7:07 - 7:10
    The last pebble,
picked up with my left hand,
  • 7:11 - 7:13
    is the space.
  • 7:18 - 7:20
    Space represents freedom.
  • 7:21 - 7:24
    When I am free,
    I am truly happy.
  • 7:26 - 7:29
    I like to breathe,
  • 7:29 - 7:32
to feel space inside of myself,
  • 7:34 - 7:38
and not be stopped by anything.
  • 7:38 - 7:43
    Space does not stop me.
It allows my mind to be open and wide.
  • 7:44 - 7:46
    Like the sky.
  • 7:48 - 7:53
I close my hand on this space-pebble.
  • 7:55 - 8:00
    Breathing in,
    I see myself as space.
  • 8:04 - 8:06
    Breathing out,
  • 8:06 - 8:08
    I feel free.
  • 8:10 - 8:13
    In, space.
  • 8:14 - 8:17
    Out, free.
  • 8:28 - 8:33
    Then I can put
the pebble down on my right.
  • 8:38 - 8:42
    Anytime that I feel
    very angry or irritated,
  • 8:42 - 8:44
I can pick up the flower-pebble,
  • 8:44 - 8:46
just put it in my hand
  • 8:47 - 8:50
    and then touch the freshness
of the flower inside of myself.
  • 8:56 - 9:00
If I feel frightened or uneasy,
  • 9:00 - 9:04
I can pick up the mountain-pebble
    in my hand, hold it
  • 9:05 - 9:07
    and touch solidity.
  • 9:13 - 9:15
If my mind is not clear,
  • 9:15 - 9:17
if I have a lot of emotions coming up,
  • 9:17 - 9:19
I can pick up the water-pebble
  • 9:20 - 9:22
    have it in my hand.
  • 9:23 - 9:26
    My mind becomes calm
  • 9:26 - 9:29
    and can reflect all things.
  • 9:29 - 9:31
    I can see clearly
what is happening in my mind.
  • 9:32 - 9:34
    My sadness, my joy,
  • 9:35 - 9:37
    everything.
  • 9:41 - 9:44
    When I feel
  • 9:46 - 9:49
    like I can't do
    what I want to do,
  • 9:49 - 9:52
    trapped, bored,
  • 9:53 - 9:55
I pick up the space pebble.
  • 9:56 - 9:59
I hold it in my hand
    and suddenly I touch freedom
  • 10:02 - 10:04
    and I feel great happiness.
  • 10:06 - 10:10
You can bring these in a pouch
    everywhere you go
  • 10:14 - 10:18
and all the fear, anger, sadness,
  • 10:20 - 10:24
    can be transformed
    into joy, happiness and freedom.
  • 10:25 - 10:27
    That is pebble meditation.
