Algonquin College launches Retirement Communities Management program

  • 0:06 - 0:11
Our population is changing. They're living
longer, they want to live healthier,
  • 0:11 - 0:15
and they want to live more engaged. They
want to live out of isolation and they
  • 0:15 - 0:20
want to live independently for as long
as possible. To do that, there are changing
  • 0:20 - 0:26
needs and colleges are a wonderful
    resource to help deliver particular
  • 0:26 - 0:31
services and it's nice to see that
Algonquin College here, it's doing a
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    seniors' program.
  • 0:34 - 0:39
    I have about 25 years
of retirement home operations experience, and I've also
  • 0:39 - 0:44
worked in long-term care and hospitals. I collaborated with many men and women that are currently in
  • 0:44 - 0:50
the industry to develop the criteria to
go forward. The course will cover all
  • 0:50 - 0:59
bases of running a retirement communities operation including managing residents, the seniors, staff and
  • 0:59 - 1:04
ensuring that quality programs and that
the intent of the retirement home act are being met.
  • 1:05 - 1:08
So I enrolled in the program, I've worked in the industry before when I was going through
  • 1:08 - 1:11
university. I did five years in
retirement homes and then after university
  • 1:11 - 1:14
and then I kind of changed directions
so I'm trying to get back into the
  • 1:14 - 1:19
industry and I feel like this will just give
me a heads up in a big boost in what
  • 1:19 - 1:21
sort of skills I'll have to offer employers
  • 1:23 - 1:28
The solution to the challenges of the aging population are very very multi-faceted
  • 1:28 - 1:33
    and includes education and includes
training. There's a tremendous number of
  • 1:33 - 1:38
    retirement homes, it's a regulated
business and Algonquin will be on the cutting edge
  • 1:38 - 1:43
and have a certificate program that will
enable people to learn about the
  • 1:43 - 1:47
regulations and the laws in terms of how to manage residences for seniors.
  • 1:47 - 1:51
Students will learn rights of the residents and ensure that when they
  • 1:51 - 1:54
go into the industry when they go back to the retirement homes
  • 1:54 - 2:01
that first and foremost safety and security of seniors is utmost in their minds
  • 2:01 - 2:04
as they work through their days of management.
  • 2:04 - 2:08
Creates career opportunities as well for Algonquin students to be able to access that type of program.
  • 2:08 - 2:12
So we're very excited that it creates tremendous opportunities for young people
  • 2:12 - 2:15
who are thinking in terms of careers as well.
  • 2:15 - 2:18
It's getting that industry experience, working with people that are actually in the industry
  • 2:18 - 2:22
all the teachers have experience and know what they're doing and meeting other students
  • 2:22 - 2:27
This is going to be a long
way in providing services improving the
  • 2:27 - 2:31
life for seniors anything we can do to
improve the life for our seniors, it's better.
