What I Can and Can't Hear

  • 0:00 - 0:01
    (guitar plays)
  • 0:03 - 0:04
    So in this video,
  • 0:04 - 0:06
I am going to give you
  • 0:06 - 0:08
a little more detail about my deafness
  • 0:08 - 0:10
and tell you exactly what it is
  • 0:10 - 0:13
that I can and I cannot hear.
  • 0:13 - 0:14
    Now in my old videos,
  • 0:14 - 0:17
    especially my very first
    video about deafness,
  • 0:17 - 0:20
    I said that deafness is
    not one size fits all
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    and that is still correct.
  • 0:22 - 0:23
But here's the thing that I don't think
  • 0:23 - 0:26
a lot of hearing people quite know
  • 0:26 - 0:28
and somebody brought this up on Twitter.
  • 0:28 - 0:32
    But hearing loss, deafness
    is not just about volume.
  • 0:32 - 0:34
It's not just about, oh this needs to be
  • 0:34 - 0:37
    at this certain volume in
the car or on the television.
  • 0:37 - 0:40
    It's also about
    frequencies, pitches, tone.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
So it's all just a mixture of volume
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    and frequencies, pitches,
you know that kind of stuff.
  • 0:45 - 0:47
So let's just talk about volume first.
  • 0:47 - 0:50
So before I get into any real details,
  • 0:50 - 0:53
let me go over exactly how
much loss I have in my ears.
  • 0:53 - 0:56
    In my right ear, I'm
    pretty much severely deaf.
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    I can barely hear anything.
  • 0:59 - 1:01
I always test this out occasionally
  • 1:01 - 1:04
but when somebody's with me or
    when I'm listening to music,
  • 1:04 - 1:08
I cover my left ear and it
there's not a whole lot of sound
  • 1:08 - 1:09
that comes in on this side.
  • 1:09 - 1:13
This side however, my left ear
is better than my right ear
  • 1:13 - 1:16
but I'm still deaf enough in this ear.
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    It's about moderate to severe.
  • 1:18 - 1:20
As far as pitches and tones go,
  • 1:20 - 1:25
    I hear deeper tones better
    than higher pitch tones
  • 1:25 - 1:27
and I'll get into that a little bit more
  • 1:27 - 1:28
    in detail in a second.
  • 1:28 - 1:30
So I have a little example that goes great
  • 1:30 - 1:32
with this whole figuring out, you know,
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    what volume I'm good with.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
A couple of days ago on my Facebook page
  • 1:37 - 1:39
I asked people, those that still have
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    some residual hearing,
  • 1:41 - 1:43
I asked, hey how high do
you have to have the volume
  • 1:43 - 1:47
in your car to be able to barely hear it,
  • 1:47 - 1:49
be a little semi comfortable hearing it,
  • 1:49 - 1:52
be at an okay volume and
    what volume do you need
  • 1:52 - 1:54
to actually be okay with it
  • 1:54 - 1:58
    and actually really be able
to hear and listen, ya know?
  • 1:58 - 2:02
So for example in my car,
    the highest volume is 45.
  • 2:02 - 2:05
Just to be able to barely hear my music
  • 2:05 - 2:09
it has to be at least 25, 25 to 30
  • 2:09 - 2:12
    depending on whether it's like
  • 2:12 - 2:16
a singer with a higher pitch
voice or a deeper pitch voice.
  • 2:16 - 2:21
I have to be at at
    least 25 for everything.
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    And here's the thing most
    of my hearing friends
  • 2:23 - 2:27
    they won't put their radios,
    their speakers, higher than 20
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    because anything over the
20 is too loud for them.
  • 2:30 - 2:34
    So let's see for example,
    I don't listen to music
  • 2:34 - 2:36
a whole lot anymore but I do have
  • 2:36 - 2:38
a couple of main CDs in my car.
  • 2:38 - 2:40
One of them is Epik High.
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    If you don't know who
Epik High is, a Korean rap group.
  • 2:42 - 2:45
So that's pretty much my go to music
  • 2:45 - 2:46
    whenever I'm in the car.
  • 2:46 - 2:49
So I have to have the
    volume at just about 25
  • 2:49 - 2:51
to be able to barely hear it.
  • 2:51 - 2:53
So if I have somebody in the car with me
  • 2:53 - 2:55
but I also wanna hear it,
  • 2:55 - 2:57
it's at 25 and it stays
    there because that 25
  • 2:57 - 2:59
might be too loud for them.
  • 2:59 - 3:02
To be able to hear it alright,
  • 3:02 - 3:06
    if I'm in a mood that I don't
want it to be like so loud
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    that it hurts my ears
    because the base will like
  • 3:08 - 3:10
you know, get into my ear
    and give me a headache.
  • 3:10 - 3:11
    35
  • 3:11 - 3:12
    is where...
  • 3:14 - 3:15
    it's okay.
  • 3:15 - 3:18
But if I really want to enjoy the music,
  • 3:18 - 3:20
it has to be 40 to 45.
  • 3:20 - 3:22
    Most of the time, I
crank it all the way up
  • 3:22 - 3:26
    and yes, that means my
    mirrors are shaking.
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    It's a miracle that my
    speakers haven't blown out yet.
  • 3:28 - 3:31
I did do that in the other car though.
  • 3:31 - 3:33
So yeah, whenever I'm listening to music
  • 3:33 - 3:35
    I mostly prefer male singers
  • 3:35 - 3:37
    because their voices are deeper
  • 3:37 - 3:40
and that means I can hear
    it a little bit better.
  • 3:40 - 3:41
Now let me get into this,
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    that doesn't mean I
    understand the song lyrics.
  • 3:43 - 3:44
    Unless I know the song,
  • 3:44 - 3:47
I'm not gonna understand the song lyrics.
  • 3:47 - 3:49
    Bits and pieces, yes,
  • 3:49 - 3:50
    but other than that...
  • 3:51 - 3:52
    No.
  • 3:52 - 3:53
    The misheard lyrics video,
  • 3:53 - 3:55
I would be the poster child for it.
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    So music aside, let's
    talk about some things
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    that I can hear.
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    Really if you're loud enough,
  • 4:01 - 4:04
I could pretty much hear anything
  • 4:04 - 4:07
but you're gonna have to be
    very, very, very, very loud.
  • 4:07 - 4:09
    Let's talk about people.
  • 4:09 - 4:12
There are lots of people that
I can hear at regular volume.
  • 4:12 - 4:15
There are some people I can't hear at all.
  • 4:15 - 4:18
I been in group hangouts in person
  • 4:18 - 4:20
and I would have two friends over here
  • 4:20 - 4:21
    that I could hear alright,
  • 4:21 - 4:23
and then there's one person regardless of
  • 4:23 - 4:25
if he's like right here by me,
  • 4:25 - 4:28
I would not hear a peep
    coming out of his mouth
  • 4:28 - 4:29
    but everybody else would.
  • 4:29 - 4:33
    I can somewhat hear
    church bells occasionally.
  • 4:33 - 4:36
When I am outside in a parking lot,
  • 4:36 - 4:38
I've heard a church bell here and there.
  • 4:38 - 4:40
I live right off an interstate
  • 4:40 - 4:43
so I'm hearing freight trucks all the time
  • 4:43 - 4:46
but I will not be able to hear
    regular cars that pass by.
  • 4:46 - 4:49
At my old house, I was
    able to hear the doorbell
  • 4:49 - 4:52
    but in this apartment, I
    cannot hear the doorbell.
  • 4:52 - 4:54
I've gotten lucky a couple of times
  • 4:54 - 4:56
    but hearing fluctuates.
  • 4:56 - 4:57
    Yesterday, I got lucky.
  • 4:57 - 4:59
    Normally, I'm not so lucky.
  • 4:59 - 5:01
I use my cats as my personal doorbell.
  • 5:01 - 5:04
    When their heads perk up
    or when they run away,
  • 5:04 - 5:05
    there's somebody at the door.
  • 5:05 - 5:09
    Here's an example of
    not being able to hear
  • 5:09 - 5:12
    high pitch tones, this is
    like the perfect example.
  • 5:12 - 5:15
The very first time that I was in Toronto
  • 5:15 - 5:18
when I first met my boyfriend in person,
  • 5:18 - 5:22
I made coffee, we had the
    timer set up, four minutes.
  • 5:22 - 5:25
And I lost track of time, I
    was watching TV or something.
  • 5:25 - 5:29
And Devin comes out and he's
    like, "What in the hell?"
  • 5:29 - 5:33
And I'm like, what, halo, what what?
  • 5:33 - 5:35
    And he's like, "Can you
    turn the alarm off?"
  • 5:35 - 5:36
    and I go
  • 5:36 - 5:37
    what alarm?
  • 5:37 - 5:40
    And he goes, "You cannot
hear this, this is so loud!"
  • 5:40 - 5:42
    And I go...
  • 5:42 - 5:42
    no.
  • 5:42 - 5:44
So I went into the kitchen
  • 5:44 - 5:47
and he's like, "Oh my gosh,
this kitchen timer is so loud."
  • 5:47 - 5:50
    And I go, I couldn't hear a
    thing, like nothing, zilch.
  • 5:50 - 5:53
And so I take the shrieking timer
  • 5:53 - 5:56
and I put it in my better ear, nothing!
  • 5:56 - 6:00
    Absolutely not a peep coming
    out of the shrieking alarm
  • 6:00 - 6:02
that is getting on my boyfriend's nerve.
  • 6:02 - 6:03
    And I have it...
  • 6:06 - 6:09
    Like how ya doin, nothing.
  • 6:09 - 6:10
    Absolutely
  • 6:11 - 6:12
    nothing.
  • 6:12 - 6:15
    The only person I'm comfortable
    talking on the phone with
  • 6:15 - 6:18
is my dad and that's just crap now.
  • 6:18 - 6:20
    But I don't mind screaming
    what into the phone
  • 6:20 - 6:23
every two minutes because that's my dad.
  • 6:23 - 6:25
But I'm not gonna like call AT&T
  • 6:25 - 6:26
or make an appointment over the phone
  • 6:26 - 6:28
because that's just not gonna work.
  • 6:28 - 6:30
If a crime happens and I gotta call 911,
  • 6:30 - 6:32
then I'm gonna take my chances.
  • 6:32 - 6:34
    But for regular everyday things
  • 6:34 - 6:35
    that aren't necessarily important,
  • 6:35 - 6:37
I'm not gonna go on the phone.
  • 6:37 - 6:41
    Unfortunately, yes I can
    still hear screaming babies
  • 6:41 - 6:43
    and crying babies in
    public and on an aeroplane.
  • 6:43 - 6:46
    I cannot hear alarms
    like when I'm sleeping,
  • 6:46 - 6:47
    I can't hear alarms.
  • 6:47 - 6:51
I have to use the sonic boom
    that vibrates under a mattress.
  • 6:51 - 6:54
I can hear the phone when
    I'm like in waiting rooms
  • 6:54 - 6:55
    most of the time.
  • 6:55 - 6:58
    Sometimes I can hear a
    conversation around me,
  • 6:58 - 6:59
    sometimes I cannot.
  • 6:59 - 7:01
I think it would probably take forever
  • 7:01 - 7:05
    to get into like everything
that I can hear and not hear
  • 7:05 - 7:07
but that's pretty much the gist of it.
  • 7:07 - 7:11
If it's deeper, if it's a deeper tone
  • 7:11 - 7:13
    I'm gonna hear it better
    than a higher pitch tone.
  • 7:13 - 7:16
    Do not trust me with
    kitchen timers at all.
  • 7:16 - 7:19
I use my iPhone or I
    go, I stand up literally
  • 7:19 - 7:22
    like every two minutes
    to check on my timer
  • 7:22 - 7:23
because I have to make sure.
  • 7:23 - 7:25
I am a very visual person.
  • 7:25 - 7:27
    It's all visual, yeah.
  • 7:27 - 7:29
So for those of you who follow deaf
  • 7:29 - 7:30
    and hard of hearing people,
  • 7:30 - 7:33
    those of you that have
    residual hearing left,
  • 7:33 - 7:37
tell me what you can hear and can't hear.
  • 7:37 - 7:38
    Let's share.
  • 7:38 - 7:41
    Do you hear deeper tones
    better or higher tones better?
  • 7:41 - 7:43
But yeah, I hope that this gives you
  • 7:43 - 7:45
a little bit of a better insight
  • 7:45 - 7:46
because I know people are always like,
  • 7:46 - 7:47
"Oh my gosh, she can hear something."
  • 7:47 - 7:49
And I'm like well, yes but
    there's a lot of things
  • 7:49 - 7:52
    that I can't hear, can't
    hear as well as this.
  • 7:52 - 7:55
Hearing loss is a very complicated thing.
  • 7:55 - 7:56
It's not just one easy thing.
  • 7:56 - 7:58
Unless the person is profoundly deaf
  • 7:58 - 7:59
then it's like (snaps fingers) done.
  • 7:59 - 8:01
If you wanna follow me on my social media
  • 8:01 - 8:03
all the links to that will be down below.
  • 8:03 - 8:06
    If you wanna support
    me monthly on Patreon
  • 8:06 - 8:08
    and get presents and private
    vlogs and all of that,
  • 8:08 - 8:10
link to that will also be down below.
  • 8:10 - 8:12
I upload every Monday and Thursday
  • 8:12 - 8:16
    unless otherwise stated and
I will see you later, bye.
  • 8:16 - 8:18
    (upbeat music)
