What I Can and Can't Hear
-
0:00 - 0:01(guitar plays)
-
0:03 - 0:04So in this video,
-
0:04 - 0:06I am going to give you
-
0:06 - 0:08a little more detail about my deafness
-
0:08 - 0:10and tell you exactly what it is
-
0:10 - 0:13that I can and I cannot hear.
-
0:13 - 0:14Now in my old videos,
-
0:14 - 0:17especially my very first
video about deafness, -
0:17 - 0:20I said that deafness is
not one size fits all -
0:20 - 0:22and that is still correct.
-
0:22 - 0:23But here's the thing that I don't think
-
0:23 - 0:26a lot of hearing people quite know
-
0:26 - 0:28and somebody brought this up on Twitter.
-
0:28 - 0:32But hearing loss, deafness
is not just about volume. -
0:32 - 0:34It's not just about, oh this needs to be
-
0:34 - 0:37at this certain volume in
the car or on the television. -
0:37 - 0:40It's also about
frequencies, pitches, tone. -
0:40 - 0:43So it's all just a mixture of volume
-
0:43 - 0:45and frequencies, pitches,
you know that kind of stuff. -
0:45 - 0:47So let's just talk about volume first.
-
0:47 - 0:50So before I get into any real details,
-
0:50 - 0:53let me go over exactly how
much loss I have in my ears. -
0:53 - 0:56In my right ear, I'm
pretty much severely deaf. -
0:56 - 0:59I can barely hear anything.
-
0:59 - 1:01I always test this out occasionally
-
1:01 - 1:04but when somebody's with me or
when I'm listening to music, -
1:04 - 1:08I cover my left ear and it
there's not a whole lot of sound -
1:08 - 1:09that comes in on this side.
-
1:09 - 1:13This side however, my left ear
is better than my right ear -
1:13 - 1:16but I'm still deaf enough in this ear.
-
1:16 - 1:18It's about moderate to severe.
-
1:18 - 1:20As far as pitches and tones go,
-
1:20 - 1:25I hear deeper tones better
than higher pitch tones -
1:25 - 1:27and I'll get into that a little bit more
-
1:27 - 1:28in detail in a second.
-
1:28 - 1:30So I have a little example that goes great
-
1:30 - 1:32with this whole figuring out, you know,
-
1:32 - 1:34what volume I'm good with.
-
1:34 - 1:37A couple of days ago on my Facebook page
-
1:37 - 1:39I asked people, those that still have
-
1:39 - 1:41some residual hearing,
-
1:41 - 1:43I asked, hey how high do
you have to have the volume -
1:43 - 1:47in your car to be able to barely hear it,
-
1:47 - 1:49be a little semi comfortable hearing it,
-
1:49 - 1:52be at an okay volume and
what volume do you need -
1:52 - 1:54to actually be okay with it
-
1:54 - 1:58and actually really be able
to hear and listen, ya know? -
1:58 - 2:02So for example in my car,
the highest volume is 45. -
2:02 - 2:05Just to be able to barely hear my music
-
2:05 - 2:09it has to be at least 25, 25 to 30
-
2:09 - 2:12depending on whether it's like
-
2:12 - 2:16a singer with a higher pitch
voice or a deeper pitch voice. -
2:16 - 2:21I have to be at at
least 25 for everything. -
2:21 - 2:23And here's the thing most
of my hearing friends -
2:23 - 2:27they won't put their radios,
their speakers, higher than 20 -
2:27 - 2:30because anything over the
20 is too loud for them. -
2:30 - 2:34So let's see for example,
I don't listen to music -
2:34 - 2:36a whole lot anymore but I do have
-
2:36 - 2:38a couple of main CDs in my car.
-
2:38 - 2:40One of them is Epik High.
-
2:40 - 2:42If you don't know who
Epik High is, a Korean rap group. -
2:42 - 2:45So that's pretty much my go to music
-
2:45 - 2:46whenever I'm in the car.
-
2:46 - 2:49So I have to have the
volume at just about 25 -
2:49 - 2:51to be able to barely hear it.
-
2:51 - 2:53So if I have somebody in the car with me
-
2:53 - 2:55but I also wanna hear it,
-
2:55 - 2:57it's at 25 and it stays
there because that 25 -
2:57 - 2:59might be too loud for them.
-
2:59 - 3:02To be able to hear it alright,
-
3:02 - 3:06if I'm in a mood that I don't
want it to be like so loud -
3:06 - 3:08that it hurts my ears
because the base will like -
3:08 - 3:10you know, get into my ear
and give me a headache. -
3:10 - 3:1135
-
3:11 - 3:12is where...
-
3:14 - 3:15it's okay.
-
3:15 - 3:18But if I really want to enjoy the music,
-
3:18 - 3:20it has to be 40 to 45.
-
3:20 - 3:22Most of the time, I
crank it all the way up -
3:22 - 3:26and yes, that means my
mirrors are shaking. -
3:26 - 3:28It's a miracle that my
speakers haven't blown out yet. -
3:28 - 3:31I did do that in the other car though.
-
3:31 - 3:33So yeah, whenever I'm listening to music
-
3:33 - 3:35I mostly prefer male singers
-
3:35 - 3:37because their voices are deeper
-
3:37 - 3:40and that means I can hear
it a little bit better. -
3:40 - 3:41Now let me get into this,
-
3:41 - 3:43that doesn't mean I
understand the song lyrics. -
3:43 - 3:44Unless I know the song,
-
3:44 - 3:47I'm not gonna understand the song lyrics.
-
3:47 - 3:49Bits and pieces, yes,
-
3:49 - 3:50but other than that...
-
3:51 - 3:52No.
-
3:52 - 3:53The misheard lyrics video,
-
3:53 - 3:55I would be the poster child for it.
-
3:55 - 3:57So music aside, let's
talk about some things -
3:57 - 3:59that I can hear.
-
3:59 - 4:01Really if you're loud enough,
-
4:01 - 4:04I could pretty much hear anything
-
4:04 - 4:07but you're gonna have to be
very, very, very, very loud. -
4:07 - 4:09Let's talk about people.
-
4:09 - 4:12There are lots of people that
I can hear at regular volume. -
4:12 - 4:15There are some people I can't hear at all.
-
4:15 - 4:18I been in group hangouts in person
-
4:18 - 4:20and I would have two friends over here
-
4:20 - 4:21that I could hear alright,
-
4:21 - 4:23and then there's one person regardless of
-
4:23 - 4:25if he's like right here by me,
-
4:25 - 4:28I would not hear a peep
coming out of his mouth -
4:28 - 4:29but everybody else would.
-
4:29 - 4:33I can somewhat hear
church bells occasionally. -
4:33 - 4:36When I am outside in a parking lot,
-
4:36 - 4:38I've heard a church bell here and there.
-
4:38 - 4:40I live right off an interstate
-
4:40 - 4:43so I'm hearing freight trucks all the time
-
4:43 - 4:46but I will not be able to hear
regular cars that pass by. -
4:46 - 4:49At my old house, I was
able to hear the doorbell -
4:49 - 4:52but in this apartment, I
cannot hear the doorbell. -
4:52 - 4:54I've gotten lucky a couple of times
-
4:54 - 4:56but hearing fluctuates.
-
4:56 - 4:57Yesterday, I got lucky.
-
4:57 - 4:59Normally, I'm not so lucky.
-
4:59 - 5:01I use my cats as my personal doorbell.
-
5:01 - 5:04When their heads perk up
or when they run away, -
5:04 - 5:05there's somebody at the door.
-
5:05 - 5:09Here's an example of
not being able to hear -
5:09 - 5:12high pitch tones, this is
like the perfect example. -
5:12 - 5:15The very first time that I was in Toronto
-
5:15 - 5:18when I first met my boyfriend in person,
-
5:18 - 5:22I made coffee, we had the
timer set up, four minutes. -
5:22 - 5:25And I lost track of time, I
was watching TV or something. -
5:25 - 5:29And Devin comes out and he's
like, "What in the hell?" -
5:29 - 5:33And I'm like, what, halo, what what?
-
5:33 - 5:35And he's like, "Can you
turn the alarm off?" -
5:35 - 5:36and I go
-
5:36 - 5:37what alarm?
-
5:37 - 5:40And he goes, "You cannot
hear this, this is so loud!" -
5:40 - 5:42And I go...
-
5:42 - 5:42no.
-
5:42 - 5:44So I went into the kitchen
-
5:44 - 5:47and he's like, "Oh my gosh,
this kitchen timer is so loud." -
5:47 - 5:50And I go, I couldn't hear a
thing, like nothing, zilch. -
5:50 - 5:53And so I take the shrieking timer
-
5:53 - 5:56and I put it in my better ear, nothing!
-
5:56 - 6:00Absolutely not a peep coming
out of the shrieking alarm -
6:00 - 6:02that is getting on my boyfriend's nerve.
-
6:02 - 6:03And I have it...
-
6:06 - 6:09Like how ya doin, nothing.
-
6:09 - 6:10Absolutely
-
6:11 - 6:12nothing.
-
6:12 - 6:15The only person I'm comfortable
talking on the phone with -
6:15 - 6:18is my dad and that's just crap now.
-
6:18 - 6:20But I don't mind screaming
what into the phone -
6:20 - 6:23every two minutes because that's my dad.
-
6:23 - 6:25But I'm not gonna like call AT&T
-
6:25 - 6:26or make an appointment over the phone
-
6:26 - 6:28because that's just not gonna work.
-
6:28 - 6:30If a crime happens and I gotta call 911,
-
6:30 - 6:32then I'm gonna take my chances.
-
6:32 - 6:34But for regular everyday things
-
6:34 - 6:35that aren't necessarily important,
-
6:35 - 6:37I'm not gonna go on the phone.
-
6:37 - 6:41Unfortunately, yes I can
still hear screaming babies -
6:41 - 6:43and crying babies in
public and on an aeroplane. -
6:43 - 6:46I cannot hear alarms
like when I'm sleeping, -
6:46 - 6:47I can't hear alarms.
-
6:47 - 6:51I have to use the sonic boom
that vibrates under a mattress. -
6:51 - 6:54I can hear the phone when
I'm like in waiting rooms -
6:54 - 6:55most of the time.
-
6:55 - 6:58Sometimes I can hear a
conversation around me, -
6:58 - 6:59sometimes I cannot.
-
6:59 - 7:01I think it would probably take forever
-
7:01 - 7:05to get into like everything
that I can hear and not hear -
7:05 - 7:07but that's pretty much the gist of it.
-
7:07 - 7:11If it's deeper, if it's a deeper tone
-
7:11 - 7:13I'm gonna hear it better
than a higher pitch tone. -
7:13 - 7:16Do not trust me with
kitchen timers at all. -
7:16 - 7:19I use my iPhone or I
go, I stand up literally -
7:19 - 7:22like every two minutes
to check on my timer -
7:22 - 7:23because I have to make sure.
-
7:23 - 7:25I am a very visual person.
-
7:25 - 7:27It's all visual, yeah.
-
7:27 - 7:29So for those of you who follow deaf
-
7:29 - 7:30and hard of hearing people,
-
7:30 - 7:33those of you that have
residual hearing left, -
7:33 - 7:37tell me what you can hear and can't hear.
-
7:37 - 7:38Let's share.
-
7:38 - 7:41Do you hear deeper tones
better or higher tones better? -
7:41 - 7:43But yeah, I hope that this gives you
-
7:43 - 7:45a little bit of a better insight
-
7:45 - 7:46because I know people are always like,
-
7:46 - 7:47"Oh my gosh, she can hear something."
-
7:47 - 7:49And I'm like well, yes but
there's a lot of things -
7:49 - 7:52that I can't hear, can't
hear as well as this. -
7:52 - 7:55Hearing loss is a very complicated thing.
-
7:55 - 7:56It's not just one easy thing.
-
7:56 - 7:58Unless the person is profoundly deaf
-
7:58 - 7:59then it's like (snaps fingers) done.
